My first Java code

I was reading tutorials on Java and finally decided to run the 'HelloWorld.java' . The instructions told me to save it as HelloWorld.java and the compile on cmd as javac HelloWorld.java.
I did the same thing. Its throwing me following error:
'javac' is not recognized as an internal, or external command.
If I run the same code using BlueJ it works. Can anyone tell me why is this happening. I would prefer running the codes from cmd.
Thanks

download jdk6
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
i believe if i am not wrong most of the IDE comes
with jdk. i installed netbeans without installingjdk
and it works fine for menetbeans is probably the only IDE to ship
with a JDK!the OP mentioned that he is able to run his helloworld program in BLUEJ. i assume that it also comes with JDK. if not then the OP is surely doing something wrong on the command prompt window.

  • How to get the values from struct data type using java code..?

    Hi ,
    I am newer to java.
    we are using oracle database.
    How to get the data from struct data type using java code.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    kumar

    Hi Rajeev,
    To retrieve a FilterContainer you will need to traverse the report structure:
    ReportStructure boReportStructure = boDocumentInstance.getStructure();
    ReportContainer boReportContainer = (ReportContainer) boReportStructure.getReportElement(0);
    FilterContainer boFilterContainer = null;
    if (boReportContainer.hasFilter()) {
         boFilterContainer = boReportContainer.getFilter();
    } else {
         boFilterContainer = boReportContainer.createFilter(LogicalOperator.AND);
    Calling boDocumentInstance.getStructure() will retrieve the entire structure for the document.
    Calling boReportStructure.getReportElement(0) will retrieve the structure for the first report of the document.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to get af:commandbutton id in java code when it is triggered?

    Hi All
    In my application's homepage, I am using 2 af:commandbuttons and each using action attribute to call a method. Both are calling the same method, and based on its id, it should perform different operations. Could anyone please tell me how to get command buttons id in java code, when it is triggered.
    Regards
    Venkat

    Venkat,
    why not call different methods from each button?
    public String actionButton1()
    return doAction("button1");
    public String actionButton2()
    return doAction("button2");
    public String doAction(String aBuuton)
    if ("button1".equalsIgnoreCase(aButton))
    // do work for button 1
    return "abc";
    }else {
    // do work for button 2
    return "abc";
    }Now you user actionbutton1 for the first button and actionButton2 for the second.
    Or you directly implement two different methods in the bean and call each one directly from the button.

    Here is a sample code for reading an Excel file. It uses JExcel API:
    package com.quicklyjava;
    import jxl.*;
    import jxl.read.biff.BiffException;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class JavaExcelRead {
    * @param args
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    //Create a workbook object from the file at specified location.
    //Change the path of the file as per the location on your computer.
    Workbook wrk1 = Workbook.getWorkbook(new File("C:/test.xls"));
    //Obtain the reference to the first sheet in the workbook
    Sheet sheet1 = wrk1.getSheet(0);
    //Obtain reference to the Cell using getCell(int col, int row) method of sheet
    Cell colArow1 = sheet1.getCell(0, 0);
    Cell colBrow1 = sheet1.getCell(1, 0);
    Cell colArow2 = sheet1.getCell(0, 1);
    //Read the contents of the Cell using getContents() method, which will return
    //it as a String
    String str_colArow1 = colArow1.getContents();
    String str_colBrow1 = colBrow1.getContents();
    String str_colArow2 = colArow2.getContents();
    //Display the cell contents
    System.out.println("Contents of cell Col A Row 1: \""+str_colArow1 + "\"");
    System.out.println("Contents of cell Col B Row 1: \""+str_colBrow1 + "\"");
    System.out.println("Contents of cell Col A Row 2: \""+str_colArow2 + "\"");
    } catch (BiffException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    } catch (IOException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    You can further process this to convert the data extracted into XML. Hope this helps!

  • Help with first java app!

    Hello all. I'm very new to java, and I'm trying to create my first GUI app. The idea behind this app is for the user to enter number of hours worked and the rate of pay, and then it will mutliply them together and give you the result.
    I have my main class which sets up the frame then calls my panel class
    Inside my panel class I have two panels, one for the twi input textfields (hours and rate of pay) and one panel for the button and the result text field.
    I cannot figure out how to do get the value of both text fields and mutliply them together when the botton is clicked. Here's my code:
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class FirstProject
         public static void main (String[] args)
              //Sets up the frame
              JFrame frame = new JFrame ("My first Java app");
              frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
              frame.setSize(300, 200); frame.setVisible(true);
              //Foreground panel class
              foreground fg = new foreground();
              //Add stuff
              frame.getContentPane().add(fg);
              frame.setVisible(true);
              frame.pack();
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.xml.bind.Marshaller.Listener;
    public class foreground extends JPanel implements ActionListener
         public foreground()
              //Setup the layout
              setLayout (new BoxLayout (this, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS));
              //Setup input panel
              JPanel input = new JPanel();
              input.setBackground(Color.white);
              input.setBorder(BorderFactory.createLineBorder(Color.black, 1));
              //Setup output panel
              JPanel output = new JPanel();
              output.setBackground(Color.white);
              output.setBorder(BorderFactory.createLineBorder(Color.black, 1));
              //Add main media
              add(input);
              add(output);
              //--**INPUT BOX**--\\
              //Setup the hours label
              JLabel hour = new JLabel("Number of hours worked: ");
              //Setup the rate of pay label
              JLabel pay = new JLabel("Enter your rate of pay: ");
              //Setup the rate of pay text field
              TextField paytext = new TextField("20", 3);
              //Setup the hour text field
              TextField hrtext = new TextField("40", 0);
              //Add objects for input
              input.add(hour);
              input.add(hrtext);
              input.add(pay);
              input.add(paytext);
              //--**OUTPUT BOX**--\\
              //Set up objects in output panel
              JButton calculate = new JButton("Calculate!");
              calculate.addActionListener(this);
              calculate.setActionCommand("Calculate");
              //Add calculate text field
              TextField calculatetext = new TextField(2);
              //Add objects for output
              output.add(calculate);
              output.add(calculatetext);
    }Thanks in advance!!
    P.S. I'm using eclispe btw.

    Your problem is related to your ActionListener.
    public class foreground extends JPanel implements ActionListener
    calculate.addActionListener(this);You have it set up so the Foreground panel is listening to the calculate button's clicks, but it's not doing anything with the clicks.
    I would strongly suggest dropping the "implements ActionListener" bit and implementing a separate ActionListener, like so:
      JButton calculate = new JButton("Calculate!");
      ActionListener buttonListener = new ActionListener() {
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
          // do whatever you want with the
          // paytext.getText ...
          // hrtext.getText ...
      calculate.addActionListener(buttonListener);
      // and you don't need this:  calculate.setActionCommand("Calculate");rh

    Hi,
    I’m working on WC Spaces Customization library “com.acme.custom.webcenter.spaces.war”. From time to time, when I deploy the library to WC Server, it errors out.
    weblogic.management.DeploymentException: Cannot undeploy library Extension-Name: com.acme.custom.webcenter.spaces, Specification-Version: 11.1.1, Implementation-Version: 11.1.1.2.113 from server WC_Spaces, because the following deployed applications reference it: webcenter-rest.war, spaces.war, sharepoint-servlet.war, webcenter-rss.war
    If I try to login the Spaces, I get “Java code in jsp source files is not allowed in ojsp.next mode.” Should I stop the Spaces server before the deployment? In this case, other people won’t have accesses to Spaces? The deployment error doesn’t happen all the time.

    I don't think that this error is based on ojsp.next mode. The first error I see is that the application can't be undeployed. After that you get the 'ava code in jsp source files is not allowed in ojsp.next mode.' error. As you said this only happens sometimes which also point to an other problem and not to the jsp error.
    Have you ask this on the {forum:id=354} forum?
    For me it's more a deployment/redeployment question.

  • Create a new File from java code

    Hi,
    I'd like to create a new File on IFS, using Java code. Moreover, this file will be an image file, and I'd like to store meta data with this file... and then execute a search on this meta data.
    I know it must not be very difficult to do, but I can't find any code sample.
    Does anyone could give me some usefull link or advice ?
    thanks in advance,
    Roger.

    First of all, you need to create your custom class. You can do it using iFS Manager, extending the class DOCUMENT. Let's call this class IMAGE with the attributes "length", "width", "colorDepth". Take a look at the code that creates one instance:
    You need one instance of LibrarySession (that appears in the code named "ifsSession").
    You need also the InputStream of the image you want to store (that appears in the code named "contentStream").
    // Setting the attributes
    DocumentDefinition def = new DocumentDefinition(ifsSession);
    def.setClassname("IMAGE");
    def.setAttribute("NAME", AttributeValue.newAttributeValue("nameOfTheImage"));
    def.setAttribute("LENGTH", AttributeValue.newAttributeValue(100));
    def.setAttribute("WIDTH", AttributeValue.newAttributeValue(230));
    def.setAttribute("COLORDEPTH", AttributeValue.newAttributeValue(1024));
    def.setContentStream(contentStream);
    // Creation
    Document doc = (Document) ifsSession.createPublicObject(def);
    I hope this helps,

  • How to modify an existing xml file from java code.

    Hi
    I have worked on creating a new xml file from java code using xmlbeans.But if i try to modify an already existing file using java code I am unable to get errorfree xmlfile.
    For example if xml file(studlist.xml) is as below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <StudentList xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="D:\kchaitanya\xmlprac1\abc\Studlist.xsd">
         <Student>
              <Name>ram</Name>
              <Age>27</Age>
         </Student>
    <Student>
              <Name>sham</Name>
              <Age>26</Age>
         </Student>
    </StudentList>
    Now suppose i have set name to victor using student.setName,
    and set age to 20 using setAge from javacode,
    the new xml file is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <StudentList xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="D:\kchaitanya\xmlprac1\abc\Studlist.xsd">
         <Student>
              <Name>ram</Name>
              <Age>27</Age>
         </Student>
    <Student>
              <Name>sham</Name>
              <Age>26</Age>
         </Student>
    </StudentList>
    <Student>
              <Name>victor</Name>
              <Age>20</Age>
         </Student>
    As observed this is not a valid xml file.But how can i modify without any errors?

    I know it's an old post, but I found this while doing a google search for something else, and don't like to leave it un-aswered
    Just in case anyone has a similar problem... In this case the new elements have been appended outside of the root element
    What you need to do is first get the root element and then append the new children to that, there are several ways of getting the root element, which depend on what you want to do with the elements you get back here's a simple (incomplete) way.
    // gets the root element of the specified file (code not shown)
    Element rootElement= new SAXReader().read(file).getRootElement();Then just append the new elements as below (this is non-generic code and would need to be modified for your situation)
    // write a new student element
    Element student = document.createElement("Student");  // creates the new student
    rootElement.appendChild(student); // ***appends it to the root element***
    Element name = document.createElement("Name"); // creates the name element
    name.appendChild(document.createTextNode("Fred")); // adds the name text to the name element
    student.appendChild(name); // appends the name to the student
    Element age= document.createElement("Age"); // creates the age element
    age.appendChild(document.createTextNode("26")); // adds the age text to the age element
    student.appendChild(age); // appends the name to the studentThen flush ya buffers or whatever and write the file

  • How to get the filters of Webi document/Report using Java code in XI SDK.

    Hi All,
       I have a requirement where i have to extrcat filters from the Webi Document.using java SDK.
    I am trying to find the class called "filterable"but not able to use in my java code and will get always
    "java.lang.ClassCastException  com.businessobjects.wp.om.OMDocument cannot be cast to com.businessobjects.rebean.wi.Filterable"
    I am using the below java code like
    ReportElement re=document.getStructure()
    FilterContainer flt=((Filterable) re).getFilter()
    I am stuck and need this in uregent.
    Please help.

    Hi Rajeev,
    To retrieve a FilterContainer you will need to traverse the report structure:
    ReportStructure boReportStructure = boDocumentInstance.getStructure();
    ReportContainer boReportContainer = (ReportContainer) boReportStructure.getReportElement(0);
    FilterContainer boFilterContainer = null;
    if (boReportContainer.hasFilter()) {
         boFilterContainer = boReportContainer.getFilter();
    } else {
         boFilterContainer = boReportContainer.createFilter(LogicalOperator.AND);
    Calling boDocumentInstance.getStructure() will retrieve the entire structure for the document.
    Calling boReportStructure.getReportElement(0) will retrieve the structure for the first report of the document.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Dan

  • Query using the SQL 'go' command  on a JAVA code

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a new database on MS SQL and at the same time verify whether the data base exist already and then add a new table. The query statement works well on the query windows on MS SQL, but when the query is place using a JAVA code it gives the following error:

    Ok, first of all thanks for your answer, now what I want to do is the following:
    1) I need to input ((retrieve) every minute some data (Date and Temperature), that I will get from and external device, this is not part of this code.
    2) I want to store that data (Date and Temp) on a data base, here where I need the command to create the data base and to verify whether that data base already exists. In case it has already been created then create new table(s) on it. If it doesn't exist then create and then create new tables.
    3) Each Day (at yyyy mm dd 00:00:00:000 will create a new table, and the name of this table will be yyyymmdd.
    4) Then every minute the java code will retrieve the data and add it to the table in the data base.
    5) That will be a close loop that will be running until the user interrupt it.
    I haven't make the communication code yet, in order to test my code I was thinking to retrieve the data from another data base. This would be just to verify that the JAVA sequence is able to retrieve the data every minute and create new data base and tables.
    For the record I am able to send the queries and retrieve information from SQL running the code in eclipse, that will cover your first observation.
    I am quite new in the forum I am sorry I didn't get the use of code tags.
    Sorry again as I said I am quite new on this, what's a DDL statement.
    Thanks.

  • [UCCx] Change volume of an audio file (java code)

    Hello guys,
    Thanks to the many examples I compiled on the subject, I was able to create a script that mixes 2 audio wav files into a 3rd one. Basically the goal is to mix a first audio file containing some speech with a second one containing some music, these files being encoded identically (8 bits, 8KHz, mono wav files). The resulting file must be encoded in the same format than the initial ones.
    The mixing operation is performed thanks to the MixingAudioInputStream library found online (it can be found here).
    It is not the most beautiful Java code (I am no developer), but it works:
    Document doc1 = (Document) promptFlux1;
    Document doc2 = (Document) promptFlux2;
    Document docFinal = (Document) promptFinal;
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioFormat formatAudio = null;
    java.util.List audioInputStreamList = new java.util.ArrayList();
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioInputStream ais1 = null;
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioInputStream ais2 = null;
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioInputStream aisTemp = null;
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioFileFormat formatFichierAudio = javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getAudioFileFormat(new java.io.BufferedInputStream(doc1.getInputStream()));
    java.io.File fichierTemp = java.io.File.createTempFile("wav", "tmp");
    ais1 = javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(doc1.getInputStream());
    formatAudio = ais1.getFormat();
    aisTemp = javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(doc2.getInputStream());
    byte[] bufferTemp = new byte[(int)ais1.getFrameLength()];
    int nbOctetsLus = aisTemp.read(bufferTemp, 0, bufferTemp.length);
    java.io.ByteArrayInputStream baisTemp = new java.io.ByteArrayInputStream(bufferTemp);
    ais2 = new javax.sound.sampled.AudioInputStream(baisTemp, formatAudio, bufferTemp.length/formatAudio.getFrameSize());
    audioInputStreamList.add(ais1);
    audioInputStreamList.add(ais2);
    MixingAudioInputStream mixer = new MixingAudioInputStream(formatAudio, audioInputStreamList);
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.write(mixer, formatFichierAudio.getType(), fichierTemp);
    return fichierTemp;
    The only downside to this is that the music can be a little loud comparing to the speech. So I am now trying to use the AmplitudeAudioInputStream library to adjust the volume of the second file (it can be found here).
    Here are the additional lines I wrote to do this:
    ais2 = new javax.sound.sampled.AudioInputStream(baisTemp, formatAudio, bufferTemp.length/formatAudio.getFrameSize());
    org.tritonus.dsp.ais.AmplitudeAudioInputStream amplifiedAudioInputStream = new org.tritonus.dsp.ais.AmplitudeAudioInputStream(ais2, formatAudio);
    amplifiedAudioInputStream.setAmplitudeLinear(0.2F);
    audioInputStreamList.add(ais1);
    audioInputStreamList.add(amplifiedAudioInputStream);
    MixingAudioInputStream mixer = new MixingAudioInputStream(formatAudio, audioInputStreamList);
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.write(mixer, formatFichierAudio.getType(), fichierTemp);
    return fichierTemp;
    The problem is I always get the following exception when executing the code:
    could not write audio file: file type not supported: WAVE; nested exception is: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: could not write audio file: file type not supported: WAVE (line 30, col:2)
    The error is on the last line (the write method), but after many hours of tests and research I cannot understand why this is not working... so I have added some "debugging" information to the code:
    System.out.println("file1 audio file format: " + formatFichierAudio.toString());
    System.out.println("file1 file format: " + ais1.getFormat().toString());
    System.out.println("file2 file format: " + ais2.getFormat().toString());
    System.out.println("AIS with modified volume file format: " + amplifiedAudioInputStream.getFormat().toString());
    System.out.println("Mixed AIS (final) file format: " + mixer.getFormat().toString());
    AudioFileFormat.Type[] typesDeFichiers = AudioSystem.getAudioFileTypes(mixer);
    for (int i = 0; i < typesDeFichiers.length ; i++) {
    System.out.println("Mixed AIS (final) #" + i + " supported file format: " + typesDeFichiers[i].toString());
    System.out.println("Is WAVE format supported by Mixed AIS (final): " + AudioSystem.isFileTypeSupported(AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE, mixer));
    System.out.println("Destination file format: " + (AudioSystem.getAudioFileFormat((java.io.File)f)).toString());
    AudioInputStream aisFinal = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(f);
    System.out.println("Is WAVE format supported by destination file: " + AudioSystem.isFileTypeSupported(AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE, aisFinal));
    try {
    // Ecriture du flux résultant dans un fichier
    javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.write(mixer, formatFichierAudio.getType(), fichierTemp);
    return fichierTemp;
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("Caught Exception: " + e.getMessage());
    Which gives the following result during execution:
    file1 audio file format: WAVE (.wav) file, byte length: 146964, data format: ULAW 8000.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame, , frame length: 146906
    file1 file format: ULAW 8000.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame,
    file2 file format: ULAW 8000.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame,
    AIS with modified volume file format: ULAW 8000.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame,
    Mixed AIS (final) file format: ULAW 8000.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame,
    Mixed AIS (final) #1 supported file format: WAVE
    Mixed AIS (final) #2 supported file format: AU
    Mixed AIS (final) #3 supported file format: AIFF
    Is WAVE format supported by Mixed AIS (final): true
    Destination file format: WAVE (.wav) file, byte length: 146952, data format: ULAW 8000.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame, , frame length: 146906
    Is WAVE format supported by destination file: true
    So everything tends to show that the format should be supported and the mixed AIS should be written to the file... but I still get the error.
    I am really confused here, if someone could help it would be great.
    Thanks in advance!
    PS: I have attached print screens of the actual script, without the "volume adjustment" code.

    Hi,
    well I started writing a similar solution but it did not work either so I just put it on hold.
    I also tried to get hold of the streaming "device" abstraction of UCCX to adjust the volume while "playing" but that was a dead end, too, unfortunately.
    Sorry about my previous comment on your StackOverflow post, that time I thought it was kind of out of context but I believe you only wanted to ask about this issue on all available forums.

    sorry for that , but the
    Runtime runtime = Runtime.getRuntime();
              Process proc = runtime.exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","jar"});
              proc.waitFor();
    int i = proc.exitValue();
    this code was different from first one
    and in case of Process if runtime .exec is succesful it is wainting for long time , in this case i want if the runtime.exec is succesful something should be returned

    guys...please help me transform this C++ code to java code....please try to explain the code..thanks
    [program]
    #include <stdio.h>
    #define ALIVE 1
    #define DEAD 0
    #define SZ 33
    int stschk (int ,int );
    main()
    int s[SZ][SZ], i, j;
    for (i=0; i<sz; i++ ) s[0] = DEAD;
    for (j=0; j<sz; j++ ) s[0][j] = DEAD;
    s[0][1] = ALIVE;
    for (i=0; i<sz-1; i++) {
    for ( j=1;j<sz;j++ ) {
    s[i][j] = stschk(s[i][j-1],s[i+1][j];
    if(s[i][j-1]==ALIVE) printf("*");
    else printf(" ");
    printf("\n");
    int stschk(int s1,int s2)
    if(((s1==DEAD)&&(s2==ALIVE))||
    ((s1==ALIVE)&&(s2==DEAD))) return ALIVE;
    else return DEAD;

    Being picky, that's not C++, that's C. Standard headers in C++ dont' have .h after them, loop variables are scoped with the for, you use constants rather than #defines, etc..
    C and C++ both don't initialise arrays by default; you'd have to write an initialiser to get it to zero out the array:
        int s[sz][sz] = {};gcc will insert a call to memset to zero the array.
    If the author was assuming that the array was zeroed out, there would be no point zeroing the first row and column.
    The code reads values which haven't been initialised. If you mark such values explicitly undefined, and change the program to report an error when undefined, then you get several cases where the program makes such report.
    So either it' s a primitive random number generator (some random number generators use uninitialised memory as a source of randomness), or it's buggy, or it's processing undefined data and throwing away the result. Either way, it cannot be directly be ported to Java if the undefined values (which are limited to a small area of the ouput) are significant.

  • Java Code in a text file

    Hi,
    I need an information if whether anything like this can be done in java or not !!
    The requirement is to place the jave code statements into a text file and dynamically execute these statements which have been placed in the file. for eg: if a text file "test.txt" contains a statement
    System.out.println("Hello world"); without the class being defined or the main method being defined. I need to execute this statement and print out hello world on the console.
    is this possible ???
    I would be using JDK 1.2 or 1.3 for this but certainly not 1.4.x and above
    please do let me know if this problem can be tackled in anyway !!
    Thanks in advance !

    I'd suggest first checking to see if the code in question would also be valid code in an interpreted language like Javascript, Groovy, or BeanShell.
    If it is, then use an interpreter for the appropriate language, an interpreter written in Java and which you can plug into the Java program you're using.
    Otherwise, I suppose you could wrap a class and method around the code, and compile and run that.

  • Just finished my first Java application. What's next?

    Thanks to the kind help from everyone on this forum and some intensive labor for the last couple of months, I've finally given birth to my first Java application. I used Netbeans as my IDE of choice. During the development stages I would run my project directly from the IDE. In the project folder, a total of five folders were created: build, dist, nbproject, src, and test as well as two files build.xml and manifest.mf.
    Being a newbie in this field, I was wondering about the remaining steps needed to distribute the application. Here are some questions that come to mind:
    1) I know I can simply just double-click the project's *.jar* file to get it work. Is that the norm with Java applications or do I need to create a different file? I'm used to seeing *.exe* files. I'm also used to seeing an installation process, which brings me to my next question.
    2) Do you simply just zip the entire project folder and allow people to download it on their computer hoping they know how to access the *.jar* file?
    3) Seeing that I've only been testing the application in Netbeans, will there be file path or classpath problems if I run it on other computers? Are there necessary steps I need to follow to avoid such problems?
    4) Do you take any precautionary steps to protect your code? Do you lock the folders?
    5) In the future, if I decide to add a small fee to download the application, how hard would it be to add a password activation feature? (I know this could get pretty complex)
    Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

I'm used to seeing *.exe* files. I'm also used to seeing an installation process, which brings me to my next question.It's quite common to provide a shell script (batch file, etc) to launch the app.
    2) Do you simply just zip the entire project folder and allow people to download it on their computer hoping they know how to access the *.jar* file?You can do. There are also installation utilities around. InstallAnywhere is the only one I've ever used, but others do exist.
    3) Seeing that I've only been testing the application in Netbeans, will there be file path or classpath problems if I run it on other computers? Are there necessary steps I need to follow to avoid such problems?Probably. The best way to avoid them is to test them, and to not ever depend on the CLASSPATH environment variable. That's a portability nightmare.
    4) Do you take any precautionary steps to protect your code? Do you lock the folders? Nope.
    5) In the future, if I decide to add a small fee to download the application, how hard would it be to add a password activation feature? (I know this could get pretty complex) Don't bother. Unless you've got something amazing, in which case you'll be needing lawyers, it's not worth the trouble of charging for it. No offence, but your first Java app is hardly going to set the world on fire anyway.
    No matter what you try and do to stop people stealing your code, they'll manage it. Or, alternatively, just steal your idea instead.
