I'm having the same problem. My iPhone 4 hasn't been updated since 8/13. I've tried and it takes about 12 hours to update and then stops and I get the same message, the backup could not be completed.
I want to update to the cloud before any iOS6 update is done on my phone.

My iPhone 4s will not backup. I've tried repeatedly but keep getting the message "the last backup could not be completed". It's been nearly two months since the
last backup. However, my iPad2 is backing up perfectly. Any thoughts???????Try the following steps:
Plug your iPod Touch to your Mac/PC using USB cable.
Open iTunes software and choose “backup to this computer” .
Then you need to do a sysncing.
Go to iCloud (iPod Touch: Settings > iCloud) and delete all previous backups.
Then in iTunes, Turn on “backup to iCloud” again.
On your iOS device, now you are able to backup to iCloud. -
I just purchased more icloud space and I ham having problems backing up icloud on my iphone 5. The message says,"the last backup could not be completed." Anyone know why this is happening.
This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail. To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup and choose Turn Off & Delete at the prompt. Then go to Settings>iCloud>Backup and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail. To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again. If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again. If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again. If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails. Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup. -

I have an iphone 4, with OS 8.1.3. I receive notification to back up the cloud, connect to Wi-Fi, plug the phone in and the back up start the back up. When I check the screen says the last backup could not be completed.
Hi Gabby0213,
It sounds like you are going through the correct steps to backup your iPhone: connecting to power and Wi-Fi.
How much space do you have left in iCloud and how much are you backing up?

What do I do every time I tap "Back up Now" (through iCloud) it always says "The last backup could not be completed". My iPad is plugged in, locked and connected to wi-fi. I still have available 11GB storage from 15GB total storage from iCloud.
I'm having exactly the same problem. I have a new iPad, my iCloud account is set up and verified (I wouldn't be logged in and writing this otherwise), auto backups are turned on, but it's never completed a backup. If I manually select 'Backup Now' in iCloud Settings, it times out while estimating time remaining. Strangely, today my iCloud free storage space went from 5G to 4.9G then back to 5G. Annoyingly, I'm now getting reminders that I've never backed it up! The iCloud help I followed from the forum didn't cover this error message.

How do I get my iphone to backup?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable. -

So i restarted my iPod and it is telling me that the activation server could not be reached. And I don't know how to fix it. Please help!!
Maybe this is applicable
Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem
This says the Activation Servers are on-line

Each time I try to install itunes I get a windows installer message telling me that the installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package.....
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer? -

Hi again razmee209!
It has been updating since your last message and it says there's another 6 hours to go, does this sound right or is there a possibility I've been sent a re-con and the update will slow down my new handset considerably?!
