My iMac has been acting sluggishly; taking unusually long to recover from sleep mode as well as it arbitrarily opening an app on its own. What is going on and can it be corrected?

My iMac has begun to act suggishly and unpredictably lately. It takes unusually long for it to wake from sleep mode and often opens with a particular app (PSE) for no reason. What is going on? Is there a clean-up procedure(s) in addition to clearing history & cookies or perhaps a upgrade I missed?

I got on this morning to check my balance as i get a direct deposit from my work. Once i checked my bank i logged off as normal. then hit the home button. i have same problem in UK - my phone no longer works with my car cable - it will charge the phone, my ipad works fine, as does my old itouch so I know that the cable is ok. It comes up with no connection even though it is charging it. It used to be fine I dont understand why this would happen?

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue. The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK. I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

"Hacking" of a BB would be highly unusual and unexpected -- if ever. After all, POTUS has one, and such would not be allowed if they were hackable. I believe that something else is going on, but lacking specifics, only generic advice can be given.
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
If that does not work, then please return to these forums (http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/) and register an account so that we can provide you with direct assistance.

Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

How many of these you can answer...
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

My MBP has been acting odd since installing N wireless update.

Since installing the N wireless protocol on my MBP my machine has been acting weird. It fails to see wireless networks, the system preferences fails to open at times. OSX freezes, Force quit doesn't actually quit the programs after they have frozen. Basically its so bad i am thinking about re-formatting my machine and starting again, (its only a week old)

I did notice something else, don't know if it makes sense or not, but if the mac crashes while connected to my Airport Express at home, the Airport Express stops responding and all of the clients that are connected to it stop getting access to the Internet until I unplug it and plug it back in.
When the issue first arose, I thought it was a problem with the AP express, but since it happens even more frequently when using other routers, I know that is not the issue. Besides, everything was fine until I installed the Wireless-N update. I wonder if there is any way to remove the update?
I'll keep playing with it, but hopefully they find a solution soon. Being that our problem is exactly the same, I would be surprised if no one else is having this issue as well.

If your device has been jailbroken during the warranty, Apple will not service it.

How to find out how many hours an iMac has been running!

Is there a way to find out how many hours an iMac has been running? I am thinking of buying a second hand iMac 20' or 21.5' as for space reasons, the actual 27' versions are too big. And of course, all adverts state "hardly never used"!!

Hi, I think in later OSes I've seen total Machine hours in System Report or such, but on 10.4.11 right know.
