My iphone is recognized as my wife's iphone by my computer. I believe this is preventing my wife from making necessary changes to her phone. Any thoughts on how to change the name on the computer?

A few weeks back, I connected my wife's iphone to my computer to download an update. Since that time, wheneve I connect my phone, the computer recognizes it as hers. ITunes correctly identifies the phone, but the computer does not. Is there any way to change the name with the computer. I canot locate any way to do this.
Thanks.

i suspect that this problem is under windows, like mine, the solution was go to start/run/regedit and then look for the name that you want to change, for example, if your wife's name is susan, use the search option in regedit to look for every possible susan word you find and then chage susan for pete, if pete is your name. Only the Susans related to the iphone name, dont change everything with susan in it, is easy to know wich one is related to the iphone name, don't worry. This procedure worked for me. good luck

  • HT4137 I plugged our phone into our mac to charge it and it changed the name of the phone to my wife's phone.  Attempt to backup from I cloud only gives backups since the name change. How do I reclaim my phone's name?

I plugged my i phone into our mac just to recharge it and somehow it recognized it as my wife's phone and changed the name of the phone to hers.  I lost the carrier I was using, though it still can connect to internet.  I tried to erase all settings and content, and then back up from I cloud, but it only offered backups since the name was changed.  I can't make any calls at this point.

Just plugging it in doesn't change the name. If this was the first time you connected to this computer, you should have selected "Set up as New Device".
You will need to restore and since you no longer have a backup for this phone, you will lose your data.
    Restore iOS

No. Frequently the apps take up more storage space on the iPod that the file download size.

  • When I installed Mountain Lion it asked the name of my computer. I was in such a hurry that I now have a typo. How can I go back and change the name of the computer?

How do I change the name of my computer?

One area that this appears is on Facebook where it lists the number of Recognized Devices. There are six devices which include iPad and iPhone. These items are grayed and you are unable to change. Also on my iphone it lists the computer name. This name is different from name of my computer. It's what I signed in as when I installed the Mountain Lion upgrade. I know I'm not doing a good job of explaining this. I have searched everywhere on my computer that I can think of and cannot locate where this is used. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • How can I change the name of a computer I'm getting rid of?

How can I change the name of the computer to my granddaughter's name? It's now called "My name" G5 iMac. I would also like to delete that computer icon in my Devices on my MacbookPro.

I guess my reply to these questions in your other topic did not help?
The name of the computer is in System Preferences Sharing pane.
If something appears under DEVICES in a Finder window sidebar, you can click hold on it and drag it off the sidebar. If it appears under SHARED, it should no longer appear there once if that iMac is no longer on your local network, or if you turn off its shared services in the Sharing pane.

  • Is it possible to change the name of a computer in itunes? And if so, how?

I got a new computer and am giving the old one to my sister... but on our home sharing network it shows as the name I had for it.
So basically if my device (computer) is called pizza... how do I get it named hotdog? I was able to change all other device names like iphone, ipods etc and just want to do the same for the actual computer itself...

I don't think you can change the name of your computer but you can change the name of your itunes library.
iTunes Preference, General Overtype the Name in the Library Name Box,
Then your iTunes library will show the new name

what is the name of the folders which are the backup of Itunes library? I am recovering from a virus, have no workable desktop in Win XP, but can search and find files and folders. I would like to move these backup files to a new computer, authorize it and sync with Iphone 3Gs and Ipod 5th gen.
    I

I second the whole iTunes folder approach.
If for some reason you have split the media folder from the library files then the media folder needs to restored to the same path it used to have while the library files can be copied into the music folder of your new profile.
If in dobut, backup up the entire Documents and Settings folder before wiping the infected drive, but be selective about what you restore as many viruses drop active components capable of reinfecting the compuer in the temp folders and internet caches. It is much easier to backup more than you need than to discover after the fact that you no longer have access to some vital project you'd been storing in a folder on the desktop.

  • How do you change the name on your computer

How do i change the name of my computer it was my friends now its mine how do i change there name to my name

Here is the information I had found, however I have never had to try. You will have the passowrd too, so the above will help for that.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
    Hope this helps you

  • Changing the name of the computer

Hey all, where do you go to change the name of the computer? I want to know bc when i go to the system profiler theres a (2) behind the name of that i have chosen. I dont know where this (2) came from and i would like to change it.
    Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Sharing. The name of your computer is in a box at the top of the preferences panel. Click on the edit button to change the name.
If the choices in the Sharing preferences are grayed out, you will need to click on the padlock in the lower left corner and enter your password.
    Hope this helps.

  • Strange message: the name of your computer ***** is already in use.....

This message keeps recurring. "the name of your computer "Computer Name" is in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Computer Name2".
+to change the name of your computer, open System Preferences and click on Sharing, then type in the Computer Name field.+
Okay, this keeps recurring and changing the name to 3,4,5, so on until I follow the instructions and rename it in Pref. This just started recently. It will behave itself after a full shutdown, reset pmu and zap the pram. But it won't last long.
    Anybody have this happen?

    Greetings,
If the computer you speak of is in an Active Directory Domain, your problem could be there, if the computer has been removed at some point - the original name could still be in the database. Contact your IT folks and let them know of the duplicate name.
Otherwise, there must be another computer with the same name, connected to the same network as you. The only other possibility would be some Netbios/DNS caching on your router, a server/workstation being used as a router, etc.
Run the maintenance routines - "sudo dscacheutil -flushcache", this will flush the DNS cache out, and then you could run - "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly". Without the quotes. The second one will take about 15 minutes or so. You may or may not need the sudo command on the first one.
This will clear the caches out and there will be noting erroneous to reference.
If you change the name, does it still do that? You can always rename it back, if you need to.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • The name of your computer "name(7)" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "name (10)".

I know why this happens - there are two network connections to the same network. One is wi-fi, the other is ethernet.
I can stop it happening by turning off wi-fi.
I'd rather keep both connections, though.
Is there a way of adjusting this so it stops doing it?
Should I be using the route command to set up different routes to the two links?
If so, what's the best way to do this?

    I thought about it ...
The name of the computer have different meaning.
Normally, the computer name, or in this case 'hostname' refer to the RFC of DNS, Domain Name System IP Service, that resolving 'speaking names' to IP adresses. If your Computer is a Part of the global, Public Internet and so listed on a Public Domain Name Server, the function 'global hostnames' should bei used.
The local hostname refers to the apple Bonjour Service, to solve local network units. (http://support.apple.com/kb/ph3763)
The need of different interface names for your Computer sounds strange to me, because the name represent the same machine, the same services your computer offer in your Network.
I had similar symptoms in my network, because i Need to use both interfaces (ETH an WLAN). But, this problems were related to adress conflicts, refresh time of routing tables in my network. Since i use static IP adresses for my mac interfaces, all things ok and i never seen again any problems.

  • HT3275 What if my error message is the following:  The backup disk image "/Volumes/********'s Time Capsul/****'s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use. (I have redacted the name of the computer with asterixes)

What if my error message is the following:  The backup disk image “/Volumes/********'s Time Capsul/****’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. (I have redacted the name of the computer with asterixes)

    This is a complex procedure.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a minute or two
Plug the power cord back in to the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the issue 98% of the time. If you are in the unlucky 2% category, more help is here from Pondini, the Time Machine guru:
The Backup disk image ... sparsebundle ... is already in use.

  • How can I change the name that my computer/iTunes assigned to my device?

When I hooked up my new 4s to my desktop, it asked if I wanted to start with a new device.  I answered yes and the device was assigned a default name based on the name of the computer (which wasn't originally mine) so now iTunes recognizes the device as belonging to some dead guy I never met.  Also the same first name as an ex-bf.  Call me weird but this bothers me.  How can I change the name of the device?

Select the device when it is connected to iTunes. Click in the device name on the summary tab. Enter what you want.
