The only way to try and resolve the issue with you lost phone would be one of these two methods:
1. You can attempt to use the Find my iPhone feature through the iCloud website.
2. You can file a report with your local police department.
Unfortunatly that is all you can do, even with the Serial No. and the IMEI.

If you have registered your device, you can go to https://supportprofile.apple.com/ and log into your apple id. Your devices appear there with serial numbers.
Additionally, your serial number is included on the original receipt when purchased at any Apple Online or Apple Retail store, or any Authorized Apple Reseller.

- If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
- You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
- If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
- Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
- There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.

If you set up the Find My iPhone service prior to your iPhone going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked or locked, though it depends on a number of factors: the iPhone is turned on, connected to either the 3G or a WiFi network, or has not had the Find My iPhone service disabled or the iPhone been completely restored. The serial number wouldn't have helped you anyway. The only way to locate a lost device is if you enabled Find my iPhone.

Sorry to hear it but unfortunately it can't be tracked this way, you can only have At&t block service to it and submit the serials to law enforcement in case it was stolen and somebody tries to take it to a pawn shop. See Apple's support article:

If it was ever backed up in iTunes on the PC then do this:
Start iTunes
Click on Edit, Preferences, Devices and hover the mouse over your device name. It will show serial number and IMEI.

Apple should make something where you can enter your apple devices serial number and find where it is so that when its lost or stolen it can be retrieved easily, the only negative i can think of is people can be injured. Then again thers always lawyers

My i pod touch was stolen about a week ago. Ive been looking for ways to find it and its been pretty hopless. I have owned 7 i pods in the last 5 years and they have all been stolen, I guess you could say im pretty unresponsiblle but I prefer to call it unfortunate. There should be some type of website where you can just type the serial # of your i pod and it could use google maps or something the track it down. I mean what age are we in, I'm sure if cars can drive them selves there should be no problem to construct an i pod traking app. I dont thing lawsuits are a good excuse either. The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?

there is nospecial way to locate your iPod, Apple will not help. Your SN is only good for identifying the iPod as yours if it is found.
