My mac book pro start up disk is full how do I fix this ?

My start up disk is full what do I do to fix this?

Remove files.
Get an external drive and off load the files you want to keep but archive. Then delete those files from your Mac. You should try to keep at least 15% free space on your hard drive least you will trash it. Without your being specific with more details that's as general as it gets.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You need to remove files. First, if OS X does not get into Desktop and you only see that message, turn off your Mac and hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting up to start up in safe mode.
There are different things you can do in order to get free space in the MacBook Air hard drive. Have a look at this website > http://thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
Apart from that, you can also delete personal files or move them to an external drive

  • Just bought a airport time capsule because my mac book pro start up disk is full. How can I put stuff onto the airport now from the MacBook Pro to free up some space?

Yes, look in your Finder's sidebar under Shared, you should see the TC there. Connect to it using whatever password you set up when you first configured the TC, and then you can move files into the shared volume.
Don't forget that only one copy of a file is not a backup, so ideally you would have a second copy of your files somewhere else.

  • Whenever I shutdown my mac book pro the desktop background changes. How can I fix this?

    Please help

If you log in automatically, a bug in some versions of OS X will cause the desktop picture to revert to the default image at every startup. The only known workaround is to disable automatic login in the Users & Groups preference pane.
If the selected Desktop picture is stored in an iPhoto library on an external drive, export it from iPhoto and move it to a folder on the startup volume. (Credit for this solution to ASC member janay.)
If the desktop picture always reverts to a plain blue background, one of your login items may be causing the problem. The "TeamViewer" application can have this effect; see this thread. If it's not that in your case, rule out all other third-party login items as possible causes.
If you have a MacBook Pro model with automatic graphics switching, disable it temporarily in the Energy Saverpreference pane, set the Desktop picture, then reboot and re-enable graphics switching.
If none of the above applies to you, proceed as follows.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:
    Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

I am writting a document in spanish and the mac book pro changes the words to english how do I stop this

I guess you are talking about the spellchecker.
Select the text you want to be Spanish:
    Inspector > Text > Text > Language > Español
Why not set your Mac to be in Spanish?
Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Language & Text > Language > drag Español to the top of the list

  • Mac book pro start up disc is full

my mac book pro came up with a box sayin   - your start up disc is full-  then went to a blue screen, I am unable to do anything at all - any suggestions ?

OSX disks need space to work.  Some say 10-15% free, others lock the number at 30GB minimum (because disks vary in size).  I would stick to 30 GB if I were you.
    But ... immmediate problem ...
Your system does not like to operate because you likely have about 500 MB free of several 10s or 100s of GBs.
If this system is pre-Lion, you have install disks.  You can buy an external drive (make it self-powered, from the wall), and install OSX on that drive using the C key at boot to re-direct to the install disks in the optical drive.
If you system is Lion ... I do not know Lion well enough to install "cold" on a blank disk.
When that system is installed, your internal drive is now "just a disk" and the amount of free space means less.  You can start moving files from the internal drive to the external drive until you have enough free space for it to operate as an OSX system disk.
There are other longer-term strategies you need to address, such as "do I need a bigger system disk?", but first get your system running.

  • My hard disk is full how do i fix this?

I have a macbook pro with OSX lion and i have one of those time capsules. This happened before or something similar to this did and basically the way my cousin got me to fix it is he had me open the terminal app, type in "sudo tmutil disablelocal", then have me enter my pasword and then restart my computer....it worked the last time this happened and he basically said instead of my laptop just backing up to the time capsule it was saving it to both the time capsule and my macbook. Yesterday i got the "unable to do this because the startup disc is full" message so i looked and it seemed like it was the same thing. when i go to about this mac and then go to more info and then storage it says i only have 42.97 gb out of 318.89 gb. it says 35.98gb is audio, 18.33gb is movies, 546.5mg is photos, 4.95gb is apps, backups it says 0kb, then it says i have 216.12gb of "other". this is exactly what it looked like last time when it was the backup problem...how do i fix this? its really slowing down my computer. HELP!

Well both kinda. if this "other" is because its backing up to both devices then yes i want to get rid of all the backup on my macbook because i have it on the time capsule so i dont need it on here. but also to make it back up to one device only if that is the problem.

  • Mac book pro start up disk

hallo, i will be buying a mac book pro17 inch but i had a couple questions first...
from what i understand about hard drives, my best option is the 160 gb with 7200 rpms.. i believe that faster is better than bigger in this case...and i should get an external drive to store other data and keep the start up disk as free as possible...is all this more or less correct?

  • I am trying to upgrade my hard drive in my mac book pro using the disk utility in an attempt to clone my old hard drive.  I can only get so far, just before cloning may start and receive an "error 254" and can go no further.  Any idea what this error is?

I am trying to upgrad the hard drive in my mac book pro using the disk utility in an attempt to clone my old hard drive.  I can only get so far throughj the process where its about to start cloing when I get a message " error 254".  Any idea what that means and how do I get around this issue so I can use my new hard drive?  Thanks for your input.
    Vince

Connect the HDD to your MBP.  Open Disk Utility>Erase and drag the HDD icon inrt the Name field.  The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click on the Erase button.
Then try the clone process again.  You may use Disk Utility>Restore or a third party cloning application such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.
    Ciao.

  • My Mac Book Pro is giving me a message that the start up disk is full, how do I delete files, and what files should I be deleting

My Mac Book Pro is giving me a message that the start up disk is full, how do I delete files, and what files should I be deleting

There are several nice programs that can help you figure out what's on your computer - OmniDiskSweep, WhatSize, and DaisyDisk are the three I like. If you've had your computer for a while - and especially if this isn't your first Mac and you've been migrating from one computer to another, one of these programs can help you find files you didn't know your computer still had. For example, when I was trying to shed files to fit int a 256GB SSD, I discovered I had nearly 1GB of files in my Application Support folder belonging to programs I no longer used.
Other than that, your easy choice are music, video, and photos. They tend to be the big files. A movie will generally be at least 1.25GB, for example.

  • On Mac Book Pro start button does not turn it on.

On Mac Book Pro start button does not turn it on.
After some attempts of pressing it finally it turns on.
(Meantime keayboard can be highlighted, but screen is black and I hear noise of shutting down it when I press it).
What can be the cause of this problem? Actually MacBook is new, only 9 months.
Please give me some suggestion what should I do.

It will be complicated to take it to the Apple store as in Georgia (Caucasus)there is not official Apple stores and in addition Mac Book was purchased in UK. I have red some staff here about start button pressing hard for turning it on, I have feeling that now it needs to be pressed hard to turn on. If it would be from the beginning I might think that it's normal, may be,for Mac Book, but initially it needed to be slightly pressed.
    Thank you for suggestion.

  • Mac book pro has become very slow. How to analyze this and resolve this?

My mac book pro has become very slow. How to analyze and resolve this?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
