My mac is quiet, a little too quiet.

So I just recently installed a new security update on my imac g5 w/tiger and reset like I was told to. I then went to bed as it was resetting.
The next morning I had a hard time getting it to wake up from sleep mode. So I restarted it. It then restarted really quiet, quieter then normal. Doesn't seem the fan is turning possibly. I get to my desktop but theirs this big black streaky glitch like thing across the middle. Then the rest of it goes scrambled. Nothing works.
I reset and this time desktop looks fine but then random words and numbers pop up across the screen and scramble it all up again.
Now when I turn it on. It doesn't even get to the log in screen, it scrambles up almost immediately. Still quiet.
What's the issue. Is it cause the fan is dead? Power supply? Motherboard?

Ok,
UPDATE: I since took my mac into a authorized apple repair shop. I was told the "source" board was bad and would cost like $450 or so dollars to replace plus labor. The guy who told me this wasn't the authorized apple repair guy just a guy there. I assume he meant logic board. As many the case seems to be the problem with the g5's and with familiar problems. Now this same shop replaced what they said was the "motherboard" in January. Isn't the logic board and motherboard the same thing? If so maybe there's some kind of warranty or time limit before the new board goes out?
I also checked the back for oozing, bulging, and LED lights. Everything looks normal. And I've also purchased a new iMac which will be here Wednesday. So I just have a few questions..
1) How much difficulty is it to replace the logic board myself if in the future I decide to fix it, to save on labor?
2) If not repaired, is their a place to sell the remaining fine working parts for a profit? (I assume old parts won't work on my new one if they blow out.)
3) With the new iMac I bought (for pretty cheap) being used. Good deal, which is all I could afford right now. Is there anything I can do now to assist in the future to avoid logic blowouts or even maybe extend a warranty on the new one?
Thank you all so much for your advice, help, and patience.

what good is it to have a router that doesn't block mac addresses like its supposed too!!!

At 10:30pm I think I'd like to talk this out....Lemme give you some more details and lets get some hardware programmers involved. I think this is a cross-platform conflict or at the remote a outdated hardware problem. What do you need from me to track this issue down? I have been patient and have waited over 1yr or maybe 2, waiting for an update to correct this issue. Alas, there has been no solution to this problem. I have 13 seperate MAC addy's on the network. 1 wired and the the rest wireless(some constant, others random). All on a schedule(some timed access, some all the time). I have macBooks, Labtops, Desktops, Ipads, Ipods, DSIs, Windows7, WindowsXP Pro, PS3, AppleTV and a few random BlueTooths. Not that much.
Anyways, I think somehow there is a hole because of cross-platfom compatability that is making my daughter able to get on the net unless I change the wireless password......
No I have no proof...It's just a feeling

Hello, Ian.  You will find the information requested above in the Mac Utility called "Activity Monitor"  There, you can find what processes you have actively running, how much of your CPU they are taking, and how much RAM they are using.  You can also check to see whether your RAM is sufficient by selecting "system memory" in the Activity Monitor.  If you are getting lots of "page outs," this means that you are using your hard drive for "virtual" memory and should consider adding RAM.
With regard to antivirus work load strain, I cannot comment on that--I use only the Mac OS and do not have antivirus installed.  However, if you search in Discussions you can find recommendations.
I hope this helps.  Take care.

  • Photoshop display a little too wide

I haven't been able to figure out a solution to this annoying problem.
I'm running Windows Vista on an HP with a 24" LCD monitor, an NVidea 8800# series video card and when I bring up Photoshop the display is a little too wide for the screen. Not a lot too wide, just a little too wide so that the left hand side of the display is cut off...just a little. It's not inoperable as I can guess at what is there from what is already showing on my screen but it would be much better if this wasn't happening. I don't know if I should be addressing this in an Adobe forum or somewhere else but it isn't happening with my other applications (i.e. Word, internet site screens etc).
If anybody could give me a clue, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    j.

Are you running the monitor at its native resolution? If not, you
should. Most 24" widescreens are 1920x1200.

  • Fsck.ext3 a little too fast, what's best way make sure nothing lost?

Short of reinstalling, what are the easiest measures I can take to make sure what I can guarentee is not corrupted is not corrupted? I am going to resync pacman and reinstall everything on my system, but is there anything else I can do? I went through that fsck.ext3 a LITTLE too fast (the system refused to boot until I did it) and now fear something important might have been written. There *are* two files in lostandfound, though I'm not quite sure what to do with them. I guess I'm just a little concerned. All *seems* to be well but...... yeah.
I think I found at least one thing that is corrupt... cd! When you put cd <path that doesn't exist> it spits out weird symbols instead of the usual error message:
    megini / $ cd De
    bash: cd: De: Τ褦ʥեǥ쥯ȥϤޤ
Is that a part of coreutils?
    Last edited by violagirl23 (2008-06-18 07:14:12)

fsck doesn't normally do a full check on ext3 unless the filesystem is due a check either according to the time since the last check or the mount count, however you can force a check by using the -f option.
I would only bother reinstalling packages if I had a good reason to think their files were corrupted, e.g. weird errors like the one with the cd command, complaints about missing file or files from a package turning up in lost+found.  All packages will reinstalled sooner or later anyway when the packages get updated.
That file from lost+found looks like the pacman depends files for xine-ui, so you could just move it back to /var/lib/pacman/local/xine-ui-<version>/depends where <version> is the version you have installed on your system.
Oh, and "which cd" doesn't return a result for a file, so I think carlocci is right about it being a bash built-in.

  • HT1192 Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too.

Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too. Please help me to sort this problem out.

I think even in newer versions of OS X there is a slight delay; just not so pronounced. My advice to get around it would be to install PCKeyboardHack and KeyRemap4MacBook - then do a couple of things:
Change the Caps Lock key in System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys to "None"
Use PCKeyboardHack to remap Caps Lock to keycode 110, the PC Application Key, which is unused on Apple keyboards.
Then use KeyRemap4Macbook to map that particular keycode to Toggle Caps Lock.Try selecting For PC Users > Change PC Application Key > Application Key to CapsLock.
I'm pretty sure that should get rid of the delay, which only happens when Apple is in charge of connecting the Caps Lock key to its action.
Really, though, I would personally recommend doing some much more awesome things with your Caps Lock key; it's prime keyboard real estate, and who uses caps lock anyway, except in the darkest corners of the Internet? Personally, I've remapped Caps to be Escape (for use in my text editor) when you press it by itself quickly, but to be Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift when you press it with any other key. I call it the "Hyper" key, and use it to switch applications; Hyp+S = Safari, Hyp+D = email, Hyp+F = Finder... The point is, be creative, make the Caps Lock key work for you.
Oh, and the real Escape key maps to Caps Lock, so I can use it if I want to.

  • Are mac pros quiet?

Thinking about buying a barebones one (which still manages to be over $2k). just wondering about the fan noise

First of all, lets just say I've owned my fair share of Macs and PC's for the last 2 decades. Still have a garage full of 'em but that's another story. I'm real big into Home Theater. Recently did the upgrade to a Hi-Def projector and 110" screen. The room in my current house is kind of small (just 3-5 seats). With HT it's all about keeping the ambient noise down to maximize the sound quality of that Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES movie your watching. And with the addition of a Playstation 3 in the near future DTS-HD and DolbyHD 7.1 sources will be available. I did the large HD in my Dual G5, put a elgato eyeTV Hybrid HD tuner on it and that was a painful experience. even though the G5 was on the opposite side of the wall, the two open archways into the theater area did nothing to mute the G5's fan noise, which went full force capturing and playing back anything having to do with hiDef. This sucked.
So I decided to do the MacPro BTO. Went with the Radeon X1900 XT, Bluetooth and wiFi options. Downgraded to the smallest Apple 160 HD as I ordered a WD5000KSD 500GB drive because of it's reputation as the quietest drive out there in it's class.
I have several Tivo's with upgraded 160GB drives in them. Again very quiet drives. Either one of them are louder than the MacPro! I even went so far as to put the Pro in the Home Theater (beside my seat) to see if that was viable. Running a DVI to HDMI connection to the projector, TosLink (optical) to the Amp and it was perfectly suitable as a full-on HTPC (home theater PC). I would never put one of the Tivo's in there because of the noise. The loudest thing in the room is the AE900 projector (one of the quietest PJ's out there). This was with 2 HD's installed in the Pro.
So. Don't give it a second thought. The MacPro is more than capable of living with you in tight quarters without the need for you to buy earplugs. Your refrigerator, the ceiling fan, the air rushing out of your AC will be more noticeable than the Pro.

  • [Solved] No grub installed. Now laptop running a little too hot.

I had fedora and crunchbang already running on my laptop so I had't installed grub. Now my laptop is running little hot even after installing Laptop Mode Tools

  • New to the Mac and need a little help!

I recently upgraded our pc in the house to windows vista. Before the upgrade I could use remote desktop to access the files on a shared drive. Now I cannot. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using a mini Mac with 10.4.9 on a 1.873 core duo mini.
Using remote desktop on XP allowed me to access and move files from a shared D:\ drive that Vista will not allow me to see. HELP??? the drive used to be accessible through the finder.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm a little confused, are you running the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software on your Mac mini under Mac OS X? So, after the upgrade to the PC, the Mac mini can no longer connect with the same software? So your question is actually about how to re-configured Windows Vista settings so the drive is available again to the Mac client?

  • Did a little too much maintenence - now I can't boot from my system drive

I figured I'd watch the Bears game this afternoon and do a little maintenence on my G4/733, currently runnint 10.4.9.
I booted from an older (10.3.9) system disk I have in the computer, Verified the disk (all was well, no repairs needed), then booted from my Disk Warrior (Tiger) disk and rebuilt the directory. Booted from the newly verified and rebuilt disk and it started up fine. Then ran Onyx and emptied several caches, including the system cache and kernel cache. Ooops, no longer boots...instead, I get the grey Apple screen, and then it just sits. When this happened the first time, I reset the PRAM by pressing the restart button six times...still no boot action.
The drive mounts fine, and so I'm in the process of copying the entire volume over to an external drive before performing any more maintenence. I can't do an archive and install from my supplied OS disc, as it's a lower OS version than I'm currently running. I'm loathe to do an erase and install, as then I get to perform the always-painful "make the computer work like it used to" process. And, the maintenence steps I've taken on this drive are nothing I haven't done recently on my other two Macs (both now running 10.4.10), both of which are running fine. So I'm still classifying this glitch as "minor".
Any suggestions out there? I'm gonna try to repair the disk again, and then run the OS 10.4.10 upgrade, unless I hear different from anyone here. Idears?

I had a similar problem. A mac started doing wierd things like not starting. All the tests showed no problem except one..I ran TechTool and did a full surface scan. It showed some bad blocks. The only way to repair was to clone to a back-up----erase and zero out the whole drive---then restore from the back-up.
That cured it....even a disk utility did not see the error.
Bad blocks can happen anytime, it may be no big deal but if this is your problem check it every so often and if more start showing up....start shopping..
    Cheers,
    Glynn

Hi everyone, Just got an imac and just a few things are bugging me, i installed firefox and msn messeger, and underneath my Mac HD icon, there are white disk box thingys that wont go away, why is this? is it because the programs havent been installed properly and are running off the exe's or something? (i hope that made sense) so yea thats annoying, and also it wont let me delete my trash can msn file cause it says it is being used, but i dont think it is? maybe im not installing my programs properly i'm unsure, if someone could help me this would be great, there is probably a thread about this somewhere else but i had a little look and didn't find anything, thanks!

I have read so many posts with troubles, just wanted to say I love my new mac mini and hope success to mini owners. I was not sure after reading all the post about- it does have a outdated graphics card, slow, etc. I added the extra 1gb of ram and am totally happy with this little guy. my first post, thanks

    is it not true?
PS. The Mini IS great. Desktop computer, home server, second computer, whatever! Affordable enough for mac aficionados to buy as a gift for close family members. I only hope the next revision retains the invaluable Firewire port!

  • Mac needs to force restart too often

My mac keeps giving me an image on the screen (http://cjmiscfiles.webs.com/20110124211705.jpg) which says I need to force restart my Mac. I got this message 2 times in a week, and I got it once before. I just got my Mid-2010 Mac when it was first out, and I'm concerned that it might be breaking already. Please help!

Yeah I've been getting these force reboots as well, way too often, like 3 in the past 2 days actually, often within minutes of each other even after the reboot.

  • Mac Mini i5 2.3 too hot?

    Hi Everyone,
I've been reading information about the temperatures people are seeing from the Mac Mini i5 2.5 and i7.
I've recently purchased an i5 2.3 Mac Mini this month. I'm concerned that this is too hot. I'm not really using anything intensive. Mainly browsing, icloud services, Facetime, MSN, Skype.
Using iStat 3.18, I get the folloiwng figures:
    Airport Card     53 degrees C
    Ambient          60
    Ambient 2       56
    CPU 1            94
    CPU A            88
    CPU Promixmity   79
    Mem Bank A1      62
    Mem Module A1   60
    Mem Module B4   50
    Power Supply       54
That looks very hot. I don't particularly hear the fan but I can see the rpm is 2183rpm.
In fact - here is a piccy from the Photo Stream.

Hi, yes this is a Lion machine. I think that is my main concern as well.
The machine ran very hot and no fans kicked in which either means that my temperature monitoring software was incorrect or the Mac stood for awhile cooking without the fans kicking in. I fear it is the latter.
I understand about cooling (being one of the unlucky ones who had a broken liquid cooled quad 2.5 Power Mac) and only installed the Mac Mini temperature monitor when I became concerned that the mac was running way to hot. During the days I've owned the mini, this was majorly different. I also have a quad core Intel Mac Pro in the same room to compare it to.
Then I saw the temps and felt the heat from the back vent. I knew this wasn't normal. It was running at this heat without anything open or any underlying system operations running in the background.
I've decided to phone Apple. I'll see how the Mac Mini fairs but I don't like the thought of it cooking at 94C for so long.

  • Mac OS 10.5.8 too old for HP deskjet 2514 driver and I can't download new Mac software. HELP!

    Hi,
I have an older Mac with the OS 10.5.8 system. It's too old to download to 10.6 the new Mac software because it's not intel-based so I can't download the driver for the printer.
I've been trolling the hp support boards and there doesn't seem to be a solution. So is my printer essentially useless with my computer?
    Please help =)

hi, you would need to state what make and model the printer is for anyone to help
