My Mic isn't working

When I try to call people, they can't hear me talking. It's a sudden development. I've tried restarting the phone and checking for updates. Nothing works. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Have you tried reset? Restore?

  • My Mic isn't working, even though I didn't do anything to it

My iPod microphone stopped working. The only way you can get sound into the Mic is of you speak directly to it, like mouth on the Mic and you still have to be loud. I've never dropped it in water and it's never been wet. I guard it with my life. I've already reset it SEVERAL times, I tried the home and lock button thing at the same time and no dice. Please, I really miss talking to Siri and my Sing! Karaoke!!

Hey Diana, is the area on or around the mic free of debris? The mic is located on the back next to the cemera lens. Do you use a case? If you do make sure the window on the case is open so sound can get to mic. You did a soft Reset... Have you gone into Settings>General>Reset then tap Reset All Settings? You could also, connect to your computer and make backups of all your on this iPod to your computer first, then Restore form Backup, last resort, Restore to New. If problem continues you may have a hardware issue, contact your Apple store or the Apple Genius Bar, set up on appointment to have your iPod evaluated. Good luck. Cheers.

  • My Mic Isn't Working!! Please Help!!

I wasn't sure where to post for this but I just bought the Live! Cam Chat WebCam and installed everything and followed the instructions and everything works except for the Mic that came with the package. I didn't see any instructions or any installation programs that needed to be installed for the Mic itself and I need help getting this figured out. Can someone please help me?

ok, i feel a little dumb...hehe...i figured it out though i looked in the wrong section of the settings hehe I did get it working though?

  • I just got the new ipod 5 and my mic isn't working

My mom recently bought me this iPod 5 and last night the mic stopped working, I did everything that I saw on here to do, but I never dropped it so I'm sure it's not a hardware problem. All I can hear is static! Please help me.

    - Make sure the mic hole is clear and unobstructed. It is the little hole on the back by the camera lens(if has back camera). For the 16 GB one without the back camera the mic hole is on the top edge near the center.
    - Open the Voice Memos app and see if you see movement on the VU meter needle with changes in noise level trying to be recorded.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. The mics do die on their own infrequenlty

  • The only time the sound/speaker and mic don't work is when I answer or make a call

The only time the sound/speaker and mic don't work is when I answer or make a call. They both work fine for everything else. This has been going on for over a month. AT&T said it's Apple and Apple said it's AT&T. I've been around that cycle twice.
When I dial a call, I can see the status words on the screen but can't hear the ringing. If the person I'm calling answers, my screen will show the call was connected and the call timer will begin but I can't hear anything and they can't hear me. If one of us doesn't end the call, the timer keeps going and I'm being 'charged' for dead air. (Of course, one of us disconnects so mins/cost isn't an issue, I'm just adding the info in case it helps solve the problem.) If they don't answer, the call will go to their greeting but I can't hear it and wouldn't be able to leave a message anyway because my voice isn't going through. However, they will get a voice mail alert and see that I called but no message was recorded.
If some one tries to call me they will hear ringing but when I answer, they can't hear me and I can't hear them. If I don't answer, they will hear my greeting and can leave a message. I can retrieve and hear my voice mail. Trying speaker phone and headsets didn't change anything for calls out nor for calls in.
I have 4.3.3 and have synched, reset, rebooted, turned things on and off and off and on and took the SIM card out of the phone and out of it's tray and put it back in. I've done all that several times in just about every combination and order possible.
Hopefully the following will provide good clues:  On only about three of the many attempts I've made to get it to work correctly that included taking out the SIM card, I could make and/or get one or two calls with no trouble but then the problem comes back. Also, when I swapped the SIM card with another iPhone4 on my plan, the other phone would work with my SIM card but my phone still would not work with the other SIM card. The last fact makes me think it is an Apple issue. I'll go to an Apple store (genius) this weekend. Will I be wasting my time and gas? Anybody have any experience with this problem?

Let me try and address some of your questions.  I'm only on a pc, so a few of these answers might be slightly different on a Mac, but not too different (such as control click rather than right click).
First, when you buy something on your phone, be it apps or music, it's transferred from your phone to your Mac when you sync your phone.  So those apps should now be in you iTunes library. ( IF for some reason you can't find them there, you should be able to download them again, either onto your phone or through iTunes.  On your phone, go to the App Store > Updates and you'll see a "Purchased" link at the top of the page, you can view all purchased apps here and redownload them.  In iTunes, you can go to Store > Check for available downloads. )
Whenever you plug your phone in, it should create a backup of everything you have on the phone.  This is how, provided restoring your phone as a new device doesn't fix the issue (more on this later), you can put all of your music and apps onto the new phone.  You can always plug your phone into your Mac and the first thing it should do when it syncs is create a backup.   If you want to be sure, you can right click on your device in iTunes (on a pc) or I assume control click on a Mac and select "backup".
The genius will take care of the sim card and setting up your phone, however you will have to put all of your music and apps on it, unless you ask the genius, I've never bothered since I know how to do this.
You should have no problems restoring from a backup if they give you a new phone.  However, it's probably safest to try and create a backup of your last phone backup before you restore it as a new device.   I suggest you refer to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 for more information about that.
I've had no problems with my new phone so far.
I'll try to keep checking this thread if you have any other questions or need more clarification.
Edit: I should say we never did figure out what exactly was wrong with my phone.  The only thing I can think of was that it got a lot hotter than the phone it replaced, and also the phone I just got yesterday to replace the malfunctioning one.  But otherwise they saw no problems with the hardware, but acknowledged it must have been the hardware since we tried everything else.  Also I would go with a list of all the things you tried with this phone, for your own reference and the genius's, especially if you're not confident in your tech skills Showing the genius that you've tried: different sim cards, updating the software, restoring it from a backup, and now restoring it as a new device, should convince them that you've done everything you could, and the only other answer is hardware problem.
Also if you don't already have one, make a genius appointment ASAP.  Most stores are very busy and their appointments fill up fast.  I always suggest making an appointment as early as possible, hopefully before the retail store hours when they've only got techs there because they usually are less stressed and have a bit more time to spend with you.  The easiest way to make an appointment is to download the Apple Store app.  It detects the closest Apple store from you and makes it quite easy to schedule a genius.

  • Iphone headphone mic no longer working since lion upgrade

    Hi All,
Since upgrading my Early 2k8 Macbook Pro to Lion my iPhone 4 headphone mic no longer works - the headphones themselves are fine (works with the phone, mic as well).
    Worked fine before he upgrade.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

  • My ipad2 mic is not working. Can someone please help me?

I Recently discovered that the mic on my iPad 2 with iOS version 8.2 is not working. Please what can I do to get it working?

You do know with absolute certainty he, that the mic does not work at all? Have you tried recording a video with sound to test to make sure that the microphone isn't working?
if you have tried recording a video with sound and that did not work, have you tried any troubleshooting steps at all? Have you looked to see if there is any debris covering the mic? Or do you have a cover that could be interfering with the microphone?
you can start with a reset of the iPad if you haven't done anything else. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time, for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears on the screen. When you see the Apple logo on the screen, you can let go of the buttons and let the iPad start up. Try the microphone after the iPad starts up again.
You could try restoring the iPad to factory settings and see if that recovers the microphone for you.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
It is also possible that you could have a hardware issue which you will not be able to resolve on your own. If you cannot find any other way to get the microphone to work you may end up having to take it to an Apple store and let an Apple genius evaluate the device.

  • Why is my mic suddenly not working in PPro CS4?

    Hi
I have a mac running CS4 Premiere Pro.
I'm using a SM57 mic which I plug into a pre-amp to boost the sound and then from this box I plug into the line-in slot on my mac. I'm recording simple voice-overs over silent footage.
It's all been working beautifully. But now it's not receiving any sound (the green bars don't move) and I can't work out why.
It's not the pre-amp, cables or mic - they all work fine through garageband (but the sound quality isn't nearly as good so I don't want to use that and then export to PPro)
I'm certain I have set it up as I always have done. I'm completely baffled as to what has gone wrong.
    Any suggestions much appreciated...

When something works one day, but not the next, then something has changed. The task is to find out what has changed. My first guess would be that an Audio Hardware setting in PrPro has changed, Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware. The second would be that something has changed in the OS, but as the mic still functions in other programs, but not in PrPro, I moved this down to #2, for possible causes.
Check the Audio Hardware settings in PrPro, and maybe upload screen-caps of the dialog screens, so that others can see the settings, if nothing jumps out at you.
If nothing is wrong in Audio Hardware, I would Delete, Move or Rename the Preferences file for PrPro. I will not even try to talk you though that on a Mac, as I will certainly mess things up, being a PC-guy. PrPro will regenerate a new Preferences file, though you will have to then manually adjust those, as you require, since it will be the install default Preferences. Maybe a Mac-user can give you directions on how to do this. On a PC, one would just hold down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys, while doing the full launch of the program, all the way through that launch. Or, they could go into the folder structure, and locate the Preferences file, and either Deleting it, Moving it, or Renaming it.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • The microphone isn't working on my iPhone 6. Worked great for the first month and a half I owned it.

I Bought the new iPhone 6 around the middle of October and around the middle of December the microphone stopped working. I even tried using the earbuds with the mic on them for hands free service but that doesn't work either. It actually makes it worse because with those plugged in, I can't hear the other end as well as not being able to be heard.

  • My Condenser Mics Don't Work With My Computer/Logic

I have a MOTU 8Pre pre-amp and when I have it running as a converter to connect to another one through an optical cable, the condenser mics I have (Digital Reference by the by) work; however, once the pre-amp is plugged via firewire to my computer running Logic Express, they just stop getting any signal whatsoever. (Both on Logic and the pre-amp) Once it worked until I enabled recording on Logic. Isn't the cable, isn't the mic, isn't the pre-amp itself. It's the culmination of all three plus the computer I guess. Also, all the dynamics work fine as well as 1/4 plugs...it's very aggravating/humbling. Any ideas?

It sounds like either a problem with setting up your interface(s) — perhaps even as simple as a hardware switch to select phantom power — or to do with the driver software that controls them.
The first thing to do is to check the interface manual carefully to see if you are connecting them properly & selecting the right options; if this doesn't sort it, visit the manufacturer's website to see if there are any known issues or bug reports, & if appropriate, download the latest driver/software version that is definitely compatible with your setup.

  • Headset Mic No Longer Working

As of a few days ago, the microphone on my iPhone headset stopped working. I've tried it on my wife's 3G and it works fine and I also purchased a new headset that isn't working, so it's not the mic or the headset apparently. any thoughts on what the issue might be?

    Hi,
Make sure there isn't any debris in the headphone jack, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802#faq25
If the issue persists after trying the tips in the article, the iPhone will likely need service. You can setup service by making a reservation with a Genius online here: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ or by calling U.S. iPhone technical support at: 1-800-MY-IPHONE (1-800-694-7466)

    Hello,

Thanks for the reply but yes it does record voice memo because there are 2 mics 1 on top and 1 on bottom.
the one that is using for making phone calls is the bottom one. Therefore top 1 is good but bottom is not.
