My new iMac 27 i7 quad core (early 2011) is slower than the iMac 21 core duo  3,06 ghz (late 2009).

hello i've just bouth my new imac 27" ( spring 2011) with  quad core i7 3,4ghz  4gb ram and 2gb ati radeon graphics..
I've proceded with the migration assistent and just copied my old configurations, programs and datas from the old one ( imac late 2009 27" 8gb ram intel core duo 3,06 ghz, 256mb ati radeon graphics) to the new one...now they are twins with boot lion 10,7,2..what i've just discovered? that the old one is a litttle faster than the new one.
photoshop is opening faster
and more or less all the adobe suite..
is that a joke? how is that possible? i can think that the  issue is all about the RAM (4gb new imac, 8gb old imac)..
could someone help me please?
thankyou.
Andre

As far as I am aware iMacs do not have upgradeable CPUs.

I have the new $799 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 MINI and I cannot rent 1080 iTunes movie, this is silly because the cheaper $599 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5  meet the Spec to rent 1080 movies.. I didnt pay more to get less function.. What can Apple do to FIX this!!!!
Minimum system requirements for HD 1080p1 content
Mac system requirements for HD 1080p1 content:
Mac OS X 10.5 or later
    iTunes 10.6 or later
2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor
At least 2 GB of RAM

Since there is no option on the configuration page
in the Apple Store it is pretty obvious that you can't.

  • Quad-core Westmere 3.33 GHz or Quad-core Westmere 2.4 GHz for FCS

    1. Quad-core Westmere 3.33 GHz (1 processor/6 cores)
    2. Quad-core Westmere 2.4 GHz (2 processors/8 cores)
According to digloyd tests and reviews on the new Mac Pro the 3.33/6 cores Mac is the sweet spot for photographers, but I´m still in doubt about the best machine for VIDEO with the current Final Cut Studio and even in a year or two with the expected new 64 bits FCS version, better use of the multicores, etc; the same for Photoshop and others.
Between these two brand new machines, in a + - equal price range what could be the best option?
    Thanks in advance.
(this an hardware question but I asking the FCS forum too; thank you all)

And you should have stumbled on his "avoid the 2.4" as well as some models lack L2 Cache.

He himself is using 12-core 3.33 custom outfit. Apple only offers 2.93 in dual processor.
So I would say stay away from any quad core. And dual quad is usually called 8-core and has done so since Mac Pro debut.

    Hi,
I have tried to search the community but I'm not getting any wiser. It all started when i installed Mavericks on my Mac Pro. Now I formatted the SSD and re-installed Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and it has gotten worse. I don't understand what has happend.
    Anyone know what to do?

  • Printing HI Res (200 MB) w. 27" iMac, Intel Core i7 Chip, 8 Meg, Late 2009 Machine w. LR

I work in 4x5 format photography (or 5x4 for your Europeans) and cannot print a 200MB image I scanned and imported and modified in Lightroom (i.e., can't print or even export from Lightroom). I have a 27" iMac, Intel Core i7 Chip, 8 Meg, Late 2009 Machine w. LR so I thought all I needed to to was simply upgradememory. But I simply opened another 250MG scanned file of the same image (higher res settings than even 200MB) and used Apple's Preview and it printed fine, so it is  not a iMac machine/memeory problem I don't think...  Does anyone know what I should do? Buying another 8 Meg core memory obvioulsy isn't the immediate problem (that would help with speed and rendering but us View Camera people are not about speed!). Something is wrong with Lightroom, or most probably, it is a "operator"  (that would be me, as in "pilot error" ;-)  Is there some typical Adobe-hidden Harry Potter button I need to push (someday Adobe will learn how to design software like Apple does which is easy and obvious to use....).

OK...so "Under Print">"Print Job" I de-selected "Draft Mode Printing," "Print Resulution," "Print Sharpening," "16 Bit Output" and it seems to allow the "native" settings take over...it took a bit of time but out popped a print! Is there something else I should be doing?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

    I am using os x 10.4.11.
Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?
    Thanks...

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.

  • Why does the new version FireFox run slower than the old one?

I have a fairly new computer but Firefox runs slower than the older version. Can this be remedied?

That does not sound right. I recommend rebuilding your VI. Beore you do, open the top level VI and press contol-shift-run arrow to perform a manual binary recompile. This makes LabVIEW recompile the whole code. Most times you will not see anything happen but occasionally an error will surface. Be sure to save the VI then rebuild it.
You may also need to reinstall the LabVIEW run time engine and/or LabVIEW. I would start with the run time engine first.

  • Is it worth it to buy a new 8 Cores having a Quad-Core 2 x 3 GHz?

In a previous thread I saw Mike Connelly saying that:
Logic doesn't really support 8 cores (including the hyperthreading), and doesn't >provide much of a performance difference between the 4 and 8 core machines, >particularly if the quad is a higher clock speed.
So Mike, as far as you state, I can understand that at present, if I change my 2 x 3 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an 8 cores Nehalem I wouldn't get much performance difference..
    Is it?

You have an eight core machine already? If that's the case, I definitely wouldn't bother updating yet. At least not until Logic is updated or they announce even faster macs (which hopefully should be soon).
If you want to see better performance, I'd spend the cash on faster drives or something else.

  • New Hard Drive in MacBook Pro Early 2011, can't reinstall Mountain Lion.

My computer started having issues for some reason, it would just restart randomly about every 5-30 minutes. Disk Utility said that the drive needed to be reformatted, so I went into Recovery mode and erased the Hard Drive and then tried to reinstall it and it crashes EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to install it.
I will say this though, my computer has two hard drives instead of 1. I took out the optical drive and replaced it with a hard drive. For some reason the bootable drive was the optical, so I tried installing it on the main system drive. Well, I can't get Mountain Lion to install on either drive so I went and got a new one, but that one is having problems as well.
I took the computer into Simply Mac and left it with them to get an estimate on a trade in value and to see if they could Mountain Lion to install. Well they did something, because they got it installed, but my computer is still restarting quite often. I want to install it on the system drive (new hard drive) and then have the other drive for memory storage.
IF YOU HAVE ANY ANSWERS OR HELPS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ABSWER. I'll try my best to give you guys all the information you.
15.4 inch Early 2011 MacBook Pro
    2.2 GHz Quad Core i7
    16 gig Ram
SSHD 1 TB Hard Drive as main drive
5400 RPM 1 TH Hard Drive as optical drive
1 gig dedicated AMD RADEON (7850?)Graphics

What I am primarily interested in right now is how do I install Mountain Lion on the new Hard Drive. I don't have an Optical Drive in the computer because I put in another Hard Drive for more space in the computer.
I can't boot from an External Disc Drive, I can from a bootable USB drive, but it crashes everytime.
Even downloading from the Internet Recovery doesn't work. When it gets nearer to the end of the download, it says that there is 8000 more hours of download time, and then shortly after that it crashes back to the Main Recovery Screen. It won't install it on the new Hard Drive, this is what it does on the USB stick of Mountain Lion.
    Can anyone help me?

  • Newer iMac with better processor, but lower GHz?

I am thinking of buying an iMac. The new iMacs have i5 and i7 processors, both between 2.7 and 2.8 GHz. I have done a little research on youtube and wikipedia and i found out that the older imac (with an i3), had way more GHz (over 3.1). Why does the newer one have a newer/better processor but a lower/slower GHz?
Could somebody explain that to me?
    Thanks in advance.

Clock cycles for processes have become less advantageous than processing over multiple cores since Apple started using G4s.  When it switched to Intel processors, it focussed more and more on cores, as it had to maintain the processor temperature cool enough for notebooks, while speed gaining speed through other means.  Very few programs these days are completely processor dependent.  Many are GPU dependent, RAM dependent, hard drive speed dependent, and disk space dependent.  If upgrading to a newer machine means compatibility with software that you don't already have, but need, or software that is able to take advantage of a newer machine better, then by all means get it.  Otherwise all you  might be buying into is longer life of a machine under warranty once AppleCare is bought.  And don't forget, no Mac can run an older Mac OS X than shipped with it.

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had.  Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles.  I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files.  Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.
    Ciao.
