My new iMac destroyed Star Wars

hey i tried to watch star wars episode VI on my new 24" iMac, when i put the disc in i heard this horrible noise the noise it turns out was my iMac sandpapering my DVD. this hasn't happened with other discs before or since then but should i be worried about other discs?

it wasn't a rental, it has no stickers.
at the time, i took the disc out had a look at it and put it back in and it did the same again. all other discs i have used have been fine. i did notice after a closer look that the disc is not completely flat (if i put it on a flat surface the centre is raised slightly) this is probably what the problem is, but it was a new dvd so whats to say that all my other dvds that i havent used in my mac are flat... i'll just have to be careful. i love my new mac but after this im not to impressed with the "superdrive" design.

Ok, I'll take a stab at it. Since you normally work with a single layer it probably is not as important. But it still can be important inder the right circumstances.
Lets say you have a photo of a blue background with a green square and a blue circle. You want to move the two objects.
Use the selection tools to select one of the objects, hit ctrl-j to make a copy of that section onto a new layer, then repeat for the second object.
Now that each object is on it own layer, you are free to fill that original image with the background color
Because the two objects are on their own layer and everything around that object is transparent, you can freely move the object around until it suites you.
When you are done, if you wish you can flatten the layers again.
Now this could have been done using the new layers button, but it creates an emty layer, so you have the extra step of copy and pasting the section to that new layer.
Now image you work for a large company and you are doing a composite for a huge magizine that has over a hundred objects that your boss "says" are in the wrong location, and wants them moved asap as the magazine is printing by nightfall.
By eliminating the extra copy/paste step with multiple layers the time saved can be huge.
If you are creating new objects then duplication doesn't really make sense then so, each does have its place.
Hopefully that sheds a bit of light and doesn't confuse things more. LOL.

  • New motherboard - backups working but Star Wars not working

A while ago I had to replace the motherboard on my G5. As I still have Leopard, I followed a set of instructions to make sure that the new MAC address was used by Time Machine and that I continued to use the same backup set as if nothing had happened. I think I used dethbunny's instructions here: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101.
It all seemed to work fine. I checked in Finder and the new backups were being added correctly and old ones were being deleted. I left it at that, but should have done some further checking.
I recently discovered (when having to recover a backup for one of my kids) that whilst all the backups are on the Time Machine disk, the Star Wars user interface cannot see them. I can access them through the Finder or Terminal but not directly through Star Wars. All Star Wars shows is the current position of the data disks.
Does anyone know how to get Star Wars to see the backups. It's probably some simple permissions step I've missed.
    Pondini?
    Thanks
    Andrew

Sounds like the workaround didn't work (I tried it twice a few years ago, and couldn't get it to work), and the old backups are treated as if they were from a different Mac.
Try the Browse... option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17.
If that doesn't help, it's possible the backups are treated as being on the same Mac, but a different drive.  Try the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • New iMac 24" 2.8GHz plagued with problems

I ordered a new iMac 24" 2.8GHz with 2GB RAM, 500GB Hard drive, on September 16th (last day for the academic Adobe CS3 deal, and the iPod deal (but unfortunately too early for me to get Leopard)). Not my first Mac (oh how I love my IIcx), but my first new one. Sadly, though I've been noticing one strange issue after another.
First and most frightening to me, is the fans. They never spin up. No matter what I'm doing, they are always at their lowest setting. Doing some work with Photoshop and Dreamweaver earlier today had my PSU up to 160°F and the CPU spiking above 150°F. Upon seeing this, I did some tests. With Lightwave rendering a complex scene with Radiosity, and Quicktime playing a few movies, Garageband running, and a DVD playing my PSU was above 180°F and CPU way above 160°F. ...And still not a sound out of the fans.
This is a problem I noticed shortly after I got the computer and so started using smcFanControl to raise the minimum speeds, but still it would overheat and not raise the fan speeds and I'd have to do it myself.
Am I mistaken in thinking that the fans (since they have the ability) should spin up when the computer gets hot? I know I've seen older iMacs and Powerbooks do that, heck even the cheap Dells in the labs at school will do that. I should have to manually control something like that. It's just not always feasible (such as when in the middle of SimCity 4 which hides the menu bar and doesn't allow Command-Tab).
SimCity brings me to the next thing I've noticed. It's filled with graphical glitches such as all the cars and the highlighted squares when I'm zoning land all are blocky and checkerboarded, resulting in only half of the cars actually being visible. It does it with other random things like smoke and wind power plants. I thought perhaps this was a side-effect of Rosetta, but the Windows version has the same glitches. This says to me that it's a hardware problem. I also noticed that the shadows of the characters in the Lego Star Wars demo have the same sort of blocky glitching and it showed itself in the very end of the Halo demo level. Unfortunately I don't have any graphic-intensive games that don't run in Rosetta, but if it's doing it in Windows too...
Third, it's still freezing. Now, I was lucky in that mine only did that awful freeze a couple times, and I thought that with all the software updates I'd never have to worry about it again, but it happened again today. The computer is completely up-to-date (so reports System Update), but today after I had given it time to cool off after all my tests I came back to it and the screen just froze. Everything was still running in the background (confirmed by iTunes and by logging in via SSH remotely), but the screen was completely frozen with the spinning beachball of doom. Logging in via VNC showed the same frozen screen (I tried screenshots and they showed the same). Oddly though, when I force-quit the process LoginWindow everything went away and went to a blue screen with the spinning wait logo it shows on startup (which caught my attention because the loginwindow process was "not responding" the other day).
And finally, a problem I only really noticed tonight, I had a 50% grey filling a document, and filling the screen in Photoshop. The colour was uneven with slightly darker spots in places, and the upper-left corner significantly "bluer" than the rest of the screen.
Since I know it'll be the first thing suggested, yes, I've already tried resetting SMC ... three times... and just last thursday the thing was off and unplugged for four hours while I came home for Thanksgiving, no luck. I've also tried zapping the PRAM, again, no good. While I've not tried reformatting and reinstalling, I'm quite sure it won't make a difference considering all the problems listed above have shown up in Windows as well. If it's showing up in two completely different systems, then it's definitely not a software issue.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas I haven't thought of, or has had similar experiences. It looks like early in the week I'll be having a nice long phone call to AppleCare (good thing I bought the extended warranty).
I'm really disappointed. I've got an old Classic and a IIcx from 1990 and a "Sawtooth" PowerMac G4 that all still work great, and here I've got a two-month old iMac with all of the above problems.
I've got screenshots of some glitches and temperature graphs, but I can't seem to connect to my webserver right now, so I'll post them later

alright. reformat, no longer have and fan-controlling software running, SMC reset, software update, etc. New, precise test using System Load to add a load to the cpu, Hardware Monitor for the temperatures, and TFMonitor for fan speeds. Running both CPUs at 99.5%*, the CPU fan sped up to just over 1500 rpm (HDD and ODD fans stayed relatively the same), from its resting 1198, with the temperatures maxing out at:
    PSU: 176°F (80°C)
    CPU Core 1: 164°F (74°C)
    CPU Core 2: 171°F (77°C)
System Load and Hardware Monitor (or Temperature monitor) are from: http://ciderhouse.ivory.ne.jp/wp/english/
and TF monitor is from: http://ciderhouse.ivory.ne.jp/wp/english/
Now, to someone with more experience than I, are these numbers within reasonable operating range? And if the CPU fan can go as high as 3300 rpm, why would it not go any higher than half that? (smcFanControl reported 3300 as the max before I reformatted, but after reformatting I can't seem to get it to work)
It just doesn't make sense to me. ....and I'm not fond of the heat radiating off the monitor...
*I tested it up at almost 100% because with the work I do, I often do run around there. From time to time I do 3D renders and video work, and Photoshop almost never closes on my computer.

  • LEGO Star Wars II will not copy to hard drive.

First, it takes forever to open the main menu on the desktop. It sounds like it's spinning up and then stops. Spins us and stops. Seriously, it takes over 10 minutes just to open the dvd menu.
Then after all the wheel spinning and noises from the disk drive, when I'm finally trying to copy the application from the DVD to my Applications folder, I receive this message:
The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "ActDSBTrench.wgt" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
This is a brand new iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz running with all updates on OS 10.4.11. The DVD is Mac compatible and new out of the box.
I am logged in as admin. I've restarted and same thing. Checked software requirements--I'm good.
Could this be a hardware or software issue? A bad disk?
My kids are standing by. Help!

P.S. An addition to the last post. Yes, my kids were in tears before it was finally loaded. If the cleaning does not work, call the tech support in the back of the Star Wars info booklet. There happened to be a smudge of glue of something from the factory on ours, that once removed, the Cd was fine. But we did not notice it until everything was about to be thrown out the window out of frustration.

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • Should I create a new iTunes Library on my new iMac?

I have been using a MacPro with multiple hard drives. One such 2TB drive has been the location of my MacPro iTunes library and media files. It takes up about 1.5TB of space with all the music, video and books. I use EyeTV from Elgato to record TV shows/movies, then convert them and transfer to iTunes. I also backup my iPhone and iPad to this iTunes library. I don't use iCloud for this backup.
I then purchased a new iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive. I plan to hang on to the MacPro to use on my home network as a file server, running "headless" perhaps.I plan to continue to use it for recording TV shows/movies in EyeTV and converting the output to iTunes videos.
Now I don't know what I should do about an iTunes library on my new iMac. When I got my iMac I migrated my User over to it. However, when I open iTunes, it is asking for me to either create a new iTunes library or open an existing one.
In my mind I have these options:
    1. Create a new library. Setup up iTunes Sharing. This could work for me to access my large library of music and videos. However if I start backing up my iPhone i will then have backups on both computers. I suppose I could dump or ignore the MacPro iPhone/iPad backups and just create new backups on the iMac iTunes? What about new content I want to add? EyeTV will still be adding new content to the MacPro library. My iMac has no optical drive so if I want to rip a CD/DVD I would still need to use the MacPro for this. So from that perspective, this option may work out the best. What am I missing?
    2. Open the iTunes library on the MacPro and make it my iMac's iTunes library. This seems problematic. If I understand correctly, I can't open this library on both Macs at the same time as this would likley cause issues. So I'd have to make sure I close out of one Mac's iTunes before the other Mac can open iTunes. This would be a pain given that EyeTV opens it up automatically when it is converting video recordings to iTunes video. For iPhone/ipad backups, I'm not sure what would happen here. Would it still backup to the MacPro iTunes library? I suppose it would. Another concern is the the MacPro would always have to be mounted on the iMac before I could access and use the iTunes library. So this options seems potentially frought with issues? On the plus I think this would retain the star ratings and other meta data, right?
    3. What about creating a new library on the iMac but then go into preferences > Advanced and selecting the iTunes media folder that is on the MacPro. This is similar to option 2 above but retains access to the existing library I have on the MacPro. However, I'd lose all my star ratings, and other meta data.
Is there another option? Which way should I go? I am guessing option 1 is the best option. If you agree, please list caveats and downsides of it. If you disagree, please let me know the best strategy I should use and why.
    Thanks.

Yes. Just copy all your music to a folder on your external. Then delete the music on your computers hard drive.
It is not quite that simple. If you do that you will end up with many broken links and will have to re-create your library from scratch .  iTunes does not like it when you move or rename files or folders and doing so between drives is guaranteed to result in exclamation marks indicating you have broken the links to all your media files.
If you are content with moving the whole library to an external drive (usually the best thing for most people), try:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Brand new iMac, kernel panics

I've got a brand new iMac, which frequently crashes, and blames the kernel_task, coreaudiod, FileStatsAgent, PluginProcess or Rome Total War.
I've included the most recent kernel panic.
I've run the dianostics, which came back clea, no issues ( Does this mean I'm out of the woods regarding hardware issues? ).

Did this happen before 10.9.2? I have been having issues since 10.9.2 on my Early 2011 MBP and was able to definitively narrow it down to apple's graphics driver logic.
How did I come to this conclusion?
    - Boot from my carbon copy cloner bootable backup and open an app that requires the discrete GPU (photoshop), gfxCardStatus indicates discrete GPU activated. Result: No problem
    - Boot OS X without any startup items (If you have a problem with the automatic resume launching a discrete GPU requiring app before you get to quit .....hold SHIFT immediately after you start logging in)
    - Open the same app under 10.9.2. Result : Screen flashes, gfxCardStatus indicates discrete active, OS X logs me out.
    - Install standalone 10.9.2 package. Repeat steps. Result: SAME
    - Create new account (in case it has to do with something I am not seeing). Repeat steps. Result: immediate logout (no extensions active etc on the new account)
So now i have a ton of kernel panics and crash reports from the window server from repeatedly testing different variations of my hypothesis. Conclusion: issue with automatic graphics swicthing.
So what I'm saying is it is possible that you do not have a hardware problem, but was just unlucky enough to get an iMac /w 10.9.2 on it. If that's the case then I would just recommend holding off for a lil 'till a fix is released.

  • TS1367 I have a new iMac and can't get it to turn? Can't find a power button?

Have new iMac and it won't start up. Can't find a power button?

Try to perform a HARD RESET on the printer first. Unplug the power cord from the printer, and leave it out for 30 seconds. Plug it back in, see if it aligns and finishes the job.
After alignment, try to print a test page from the printer or make a copy. This job is to make sure that the HARDWARE of the printer is working correctly.

  • To install Windows 8 OS on a new iMac using Boot Camp, what size "partition" should I allocate for Windows on a system with 3TB Fusion drive?

I am trying to install Windows on a new iMac w/3TB Fusion drive. The system crashed on my first attempt but appears to have partitioned the drive correctly before crashing???  So, what size partition does Windows 8 need to operate effectively?  Is "more" better??? or just over-kill?  And, has anyone installed Winodow 8 on an iMac...and how did it work?  Would apps like "Parallel Desktop" or "VM Ware Fusion" be a good idea and troubleless?
I will try again but not too confident that it may get worse before it gets better.
    Regards....?
P.S.  I configured this iMac with the i7 processor 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3,9GHz.  When I select "About this Mac" it diplays my i7 processor as a 3.4GHz instead.  Do you think they ran out of the i7 3.5GHz and shoved a i5 3.4Ghz in the iMac to meet deliver schedule???  I there a way to check the real-time speed of my processor??.

It depends on your uses. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321 Windows 8 works properly in Boot Camp, always that your iMac is compatible > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US You can only use the 64-bit Windows 8 edition.
Respecting to your processor, you may want to contact with Apple, as they may have sent you the iMac with a wrong processor

  • Cannot back up iPhone 4 to new iMac

I am about at my wits end. I just purchase a brand-spanking new iMac. Which works great. However, the iTunes will not back up my iPhone 4. Period. It asks me if I want to install the latest software (I currently have the 5.0 software; this is the update AFTER that one), and of course I say sure, but it starts to back up my iPhone to the COMPUTER, even though I have marked to have it back up to iCloud. I prefer it be on iCloud, as I had issues with it telling me prior to 5.0 that it was backed up on the computer, when it really was not (unable to locate it...reset iPhone, and lost everything-hence switched to iCloud until I can figure out why the computer is not wanting to back it up. I get the error message: "unable to back up iphone 4 (well the name of my phone) because it could not be saved on this computer". I have seen this addressed in other forums, but  none of those suggestions worked.
I went to the Genius Bar today, and the guy told me to delete iTunes, and reinstall from the website. Can't. I have Lion OS X on this iMac, and it gives me the message that "unable to delete iTunes because Lion is using it. ? WHAT? The "genius" guy hadn't even heard of this issue before, and did not know how to get the computer to back up the iphone to iCloud when trying to install the latest update to the iPhone.
Also of note-I have no garbage can next to any of my photos on my iphone, imported, taken with the phone, ,or otherwise. I am unable to delete any of them. Someone had mentioned manually deleting all of them to clear the error code so I will sync to the computer.
    ? Any thoughts?
I have an iPhone 4, have had it for a year and a half. Was syncing fine with my Macbook (which has since died).
I have Lion OSX, brand new
I have no firewalls or security ware active on the computer
Thoughts? I am this close  (holding thumb and index finger closely together.....) to switching to a DROID! Ridiculous how this easy process is turning into an abslute frustrating nightmare for me. Genius Bar is worthless here.
    Thanks in advance---

Nope. No can do. It did not ever back up to my new computer. We looked all over this thing for backups. There were none. Any other suggestions?

  • I'd copied some pictures from a PC to a folder in Finder in my new iMac. The 'Date Created' in iMac is not the same as the 'Date Created' in the PC. Why? Is there a way to fix that?

I'd copied some pictures from a PC to a folder in Finder in my new iMac. The 'Date Created' in iMac is not the same as the 'Date Created' in the PC. Why? Is there a way to fix that?

View Menu -> Sort Photos is a good way to start.
    Some organising possibilities in iPhoto:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
