My PowerBook has insomnia...

...ever since 10.4.7, it seems, my PowerBook 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4 won't go to sleep if I leave it idle with the lid open. It used to have no problems bedding down when I left it alone, but seems to have developed a case of insomnia with the new system update.
I am able to manually make it go to sleep, either by choosing Sleep from the Apple menu, or pressing ctrl+eject and choosing Sleep from the resulting window.
Also, if I shut the lid, the computer will go to sleep. However, if I leave it idle with the lid open, the screen will shut itself off at the proper time (I have both display and computer set to sleep after twenty minutes in the Sys Pref Energy Saver panel), but the sleep light never coems on, I can hear the hard drive still doing its occasional thing, and the computer remains at working temperature.
I also have Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible checked in Sys Prefs.
I can't figure out what might have happened for the life of me, or how to remedy this.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, or heard of it? Any ideas for a fix?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Go to Finder > Utilities > Activity Monitor
Run Activity Monitor and see if anything is running in the background. If you would rather, you can open Terminal and type TOP
Type Q to stop the process.
Also check in System Preferences and see if Classic might be running.
Anything else plugged into your book?

  • My 17" powerbook has a cold

Powerbook has been acting up for several weeks now. Doesn't want to startup.
chimes but screen stays black. Have to restart several times until it finally decides to do it right and even then, the mouse freezes up on the screen and i have to restart a few more times until it behaves good for awhile. Sometimes it starts up halfway with timer wheel freezing on startup screen. (not the spinning color wheel). Have done the "reset PMU" several times and even re-installed the Tiger OS with "Archive and Install" and that's helped some but this child is still not back 100%. Won't have free tech support until I buy a new Macbook pro later this year so i'm in need of some "what to do?" help out there in discussion land. thanks in advance of your replies...MedeaDood

Have you checked the S.M.A.R.T. status for the drive via Disk Utility?
Did you check your boot volume for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc before the A&I or since?

  • PowerBook has malfunctioning temperature sensor/overheating graphics card?

I just received a brand new high res PowerBook 15'', but, the free "Temperature Monitor" program, that monitors the outputs from the PowerBook's temperature sensors, seems to display the Graphics Processor's temperature incorrectly. Often, it says it is 212º F, but it wildly flunctuates between that and a more reasonable 114º. The "Specified Upper Limit" also changes, but seems to be 156.2º F. If it is the correct temperature, then my graphics card is overheating. What should I do?

To the contrary. All Macs have a graphics card. Not in the same way as a PC where the card is removable, but it is integrated into the computer. Otherwise they would either have some form of Apple graphics card or the graphics would leech off the main computer components. Mac OS X takes full advantage of hardware graphics technology (OpenGL, Quartz).
As for temperature, it is key to computer performance. If you've looked at PCs there are many different cooling options. The PowerBook has it's own ways. First it is built of aluminum which draws the heat away and reduces the temperature by 10%, and it has two cooling fans that run at low speeds for quiet operation, they will crank to full speed if the computer is under stress and is creating lots of heat. A G5 has an extensive and well thought out cooling system with thermal zones and liquid cooling on some models, good example of how extravagant they can get.
And Logan, does your computer feel 212˚? If not there is a malfunction in the program. If the computer is whirring about trying to cool itself when it feels normal, it is a hardware malfunction. Thry running a hardware test if it is a hardware malfunction.

  • PowerBook has died

    I hope you can help
My powerbook has suddenly stopped working. When I try to start up the PB it seems to try to boot from the cd (which is blank). I have managed to remove the cd, but when I then try to boot it seems to try for a couple of seconds or so then stops, nothing ever comes up on the screen. I have tried to insert the cd that came with the PB and hold c whilst starting up but to no avail. Any ideas on how i can get it to boot up.
    Thanks
    David

    David:
Leopard? I did not think that OS was going to be released until next Spring. You must mean Tiger, I think.
You said you can't get it to boot from the disk that came with the computer. What disk is that? Is it an OS install disk?
You should have an Apple Hardware Test disk. Did you try booting from it?
Is there an internal HDD installed? Does it have System software installed?
Try this: with the computer shut down locate the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Now hit the power button and immediately hold down Command + Option + P + R. Hold for three chimes the release and see if the computer boots.
Another line of approach is to hold down the Option key and hit the power key.
A third option is to hit the power key than immediately hold down the shift key until the gray apple appears.
Post back and let me know if any of these get any response. Please respond to the questions I asked at the beginning, too.
    Good luck.

  • My powerbook has stopped letting me click.. Help !!

Hey guys, my powerbook has stopped letting me click.. My trackpad stopped letting me click (ie nothing happens when i do, even though the mouse moves around). I plugged in a USB mouse and its the same, though it lets me right click.
Any idea how I stop this amazingly annoying thing.?
    Thanks
    Josh

Sorry for the confusion I may have created.
Clicking, just below the trackpad, can be done anywhere on the bar, including either end. Does it feel any different physically when you try at various places?
The setting to defaults is under the keyboard shortcuts tab and would not apply to the mouse--sorry.
I'm running Tiger and you Panther, so there may be subtle differences.

  • Powerbook has the hots for me

Maybe it is my gentle strokes on her keypad but she is getting unusually hot after about half an hour of mild use (browsing and wordprocessing. the fan then turns on and runs for about another half an hour, after which the fan switches to turbo mode and it sounds like the machine is about to explode!
The area it is in is ventillated and the ambient temp is rather low 70 f. I have about 13 gigs of space on the HD and I monitor the cpu usage which stays fairly low. I will be installing another 512 ram to the already existing 256 in hopes this will help. I have run the disk utility program, altered my power settings and cpu usage to the lowest settings and run mac janitor to clear the register. I try blowing on it once in a while but only get light headed which is kind of fun but horribly ineffective.
If anyone has any experience with this please let me know hoe to fix it so I dont get any more third degree burns on the frustration centers in my brain

    hi joshua,
wow never thought a human could turn on a computer so well. I mean it is just machinery but fine machinery at that. Maybe the reason that hot girl is getting hot around the collar is because you like to call her "hoe" as you mentioned in the sentence of your post. I mean i am just guessing but naming such a nice laptop a tool that you garden with in the dirt would get anyone hot under the collar. Might i suggest you sleeping with your laptop to give her that loving she desperatly needs.
(*disclaimer= this post was only made for fun. Never sleep with your laptop. Never call it something it isnt. Never give the laptop a soft carress of endearment.......unless you have some wierd fetish for laptops in a sexual manner. Never call your laptop any name than what it is a "powerbook". Never include the words "hoe" "her" "hot" "gentle strokes" "blowing" "explode" witihn the same post this might seem of a sexual conotation. THis ends the disclaimer and have a nice day.)

  • Got a message that there is a problem with my Mac OS X Kernal. my PowerBook has crashed 4 times in the last week and happened when backing up to Seagate plus ext. hard drive.

my PowerBook G4 has crashed 4 times in the last week. I got a message that there is a problem with the Mac OS Kernal. Does anyone know what this means?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • 17" G4 1.5Ghz powerbook has optical port but it doesn't work

I'm trying to get digital audio to work with my powerbook but no matter what I try it doesn't recognize the port. I have a live optical cable that I have connected to the optical port and the headphone port but neither work.
If anyone has a tip or driver or terminal command that I need to run to get this port enabled I'd greatly appreciate it.
I'm running 10.5.3 and have this connected to my HDTV via DVI but need the audio to be crystal clear digital but can't get it working.
Thanks for any tips, I've scoured the discussion boards and interweb for help already.

According to page 14 of the manual, the headphone jack/optical digital audio out port is between the PC card Slot and the Audio Line in/optical digital audio in port.
    From page 47:
"Connecting Speakers and Other Audio Devices
Your PowerBook comes with two built-in speakers, a built-in microphone, an audio line
in/optical digital audio in port, and a headphone/optical digital audio out port (f).
You can connect external speakers, headphones, 5.1 surround systems, and other
sound output devices to the headphone port (f). The headphone port is also a S/PDIF
stereo 3.5 mini-phono jack. When devices are plugged in, sound won’t come through
your built-in speakers. Unplug any headphones or speakers to hear the computer
    speakers.
You can record sound onto your hard disk using the built-in microphone located under
the left speaker grille. You can also connect external microphones or other audio
equipment to the audio line in port. The audio line in port is also a S/PDIF stereo 3.5
mini-phono jack, which does not provide power to a connected device, so you must
use self-powered peripherals. Using a Toslink jack-to-miniplug adapter, you can use a
Toslink cable to connect Digital Audio Tape (DAT) decks or digital instruments to input
    and mix your own music.
For applications, such as iMovie, that can record sound, use the Sound pane of System
Preferences to select the audio input device you want to use, including microphones
    connected through USB.
The volume controls on your keyboard allow you to easily change volume. You can also
access these controls from the Sound pane of System Preferences.
For more information about using or troubleshooting sound on your computer, choose
Help > Mac Help and search for “sound.”

  • Hi, My G4 powerbook has stopped receiving software updates.

For months then I go to the software update area, it searches and then says no updates available. I can't even update the software for itunes/iphone so now everything is ridiculously out of date and iphone and itunes desperately need updating. No error messages about disc space etc. Any ideas? I've had this laptop for years and it's never done this before. Thanks in advance

I get the same thing on all our G4s running Tiger, including a PowerBook. To me. that means that Apple has stopped updating Tiger and stopped doing harware updates for machines that are now over five years old.
I would not worry. All ours run fine. Think of it as you PB being "fully matured."

  • PowerBook has lost network printer

I have a PowerBookG4, G4 Graphite and iBook on a network with an HP LaserJet 1300n, all connected via a Netgear router. Normally the PB connects via an AirPort base station plugged into the router. Everything has worked fine for several years.
Recently a power glitch took out the AirPort Extreme power supply - no lights, no wireless. So the PB is now using either Ethernet, or the wireless part of the router. But it can't now see the printer, however it's connected.
All the Macs can connect to each other, and the G4 and the iBook can see and use the printer - anyone any ideas why the PowerBook can't?
I've repaired disk and permissions, and reinstalled the printer driver fresh from the HP site. All the Macs are on 10.4.11.

The other Macs are all using the same driver, right? (I mean the one you're trying to get the iBook to use.)
What happens if you connect the printer directly via USB? Can you add and print to it then with the HP driver?
You may need to unistall the printer software manually. HP have instructions to do this somewhere but they are incomplete in that deleting additional files they don't list may be necessary. If you are doing this, it is best to run the normal uninstaller first, I think and then see if you can get the list from HP support of additional files. Then you have to comb the directories to find everything you can that remains - especially in /Library and /Users/yourusername/Library. I've known at least one recent case where this worked when all else failed (and HP claimed the OS needed to be fixed). If you're not sure about a file, you can drag it to your desktop rather than deleting it. Then you can always put it back if necessary. When you're done, reboot the machine and repair permissions before installing the latest driver. Repair permissions again (I don't trust HP installers) before setting the printer up. You may have to connect directly to the printer to install the driver correctly.
The other possibility would be to use an alternative driver if one is available. Gutenprint has a driver for the 1300 but I don't know if it would work with the 1300n or not. You may already have such a driver, though likely not the current one, as OS X comes with a version of these drivers.

  • My Computer Has Insomnia

I suspect this happens more often than I know, but if the timing is right, I will catch my PowerBook awake from sleep, and sometimes with the screen saver on. Unless a ghost presses the keyboard, I don't see how this should happen -- I checked all the settings, and this should not occur. Any ideas?

Hi -- okay, I ended up first deleting the "com.apple.powermanagement.plist"
(but I had already deleted that a couple of days before over another energy saver issue, yet the problem persisted -- my computer kept waking up)
Then it was suggested to reset the PMU, so I did. And while I was it I had also deleted (again) the powermanagement plist just prior doing the PMU thing.
In the meantime I had already gone into Console hoping to find a clue of something (the Console isn't exactly my territory -- and besides, I wouldn't know where to begin). So I looked for possible time dates registered for when the computer should have been asleep -- and found one in the system.log that got me curious: it ends with Airport firmware download, which doesn't give me a clue other than it has something to do with Airport (I'll paste a sample of it at the end of this post).
So, from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ I deleted the "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" -- but the problem persisted so I went back and deleted both the airport and the powermanagement plists.
Still, the problem reappeared. So, from the SystemConfiguration folder I deleted all of the plists -- so the devil may care (obliging me to re-enter my network preferences after a reboot).
So... here's the latest system entries -- the same repeated passage I had seen earlier many times: you'll note that the second longer block of text refers to the last period of my actual usage: I would then put the computer to sleep. The other three blocks is what's been entered while the computer should have been sleeping.

  • My Mac has insomnia

For a wile now my Mac has been unable to sleep through the night. When I get up in the morning, it is already awake.
What is causing this and how can I fix it? I've reinstalled Tiger and that didn't help.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
Also, here is Apple doc.#305262 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • My Powerbook has an eating disorder (seriously).

Whenever I try to feed a CD or DVD into my computer, there are some slight whirring sounds like the computer is trying to read it, but CD/DVD icon never appears on desktop and then machine spits out the disk. My theory is that, with Apple promoting the iMac with the theme that "You can never be too thin," my computer has become bulimic. Apparently, images of unrealistically thin computer models are just as harmful as human ones. To increase my computer's self-esteem, I tried reading it favorable reviews from when it was introduced back in 2005, but this has not proven to be effective therapy at all. Please help before my Powerbook ends up lifeless in the corner of a closet like Karen Carpenter. Thank you.

Do you have any external devices attached? If so, unhook them and try it. Hubs can cause sleep problems.
    Try resetting your PMU once.

Well, I have a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G v4 with a secure network. I get my Mac and PC to connect with no problem when they are in the same room as the router. When I go to another room, the PC stays connected but the Mac looses connection. I never had this problem before. If you're wondering I'm using a 17" Powerbook with OSX 10.4.8
I only have these two laptops using the router. I had v1 of the router and it went out on me and Linksys sent me v4. Well with the v1, I was able to get connection anywhere in the house with both laptops. Now, even when I'm right next to the router in the same room, the Mac is not getting a full bar, only 3/4. And when I leave the room, I get 0 on teh bar. It just doesn't make sense.
If you have any ideas, please let me know because I've done everything to get it to work. From reseting the router completely, to setting up a secure network, to trying different channels on the router.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Do you have the lastest V4 firmware, which is available from Linksys's web site. They also have a support forum where people list firmware issues.
Have you considered any of the third party firmwares available? The WRT54G has publicly available firmware that others have modified to give more flexibility, some which include the ability to increase the signal output. There's a listing under third part firmware at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G#Third-partyfirmwareprojects .
Have you tried any of the Linksys suggestions for router placement to maximize the signal? Apparently the V4 box introduced something...so this may be worth a try, too.
You've probably looked over the Linksys support web site already (even though the support staff can't spell mac), perhaps you've also done a Google query, something like 'wrt54g v4 problems'.

  • Powerbook with insomnia

Does anyone know of a way to monitor which applications or processes keep a Powerbook from going into sleep mode? My PB will sleep if I select "sleep" from the apple menu or I close the lid, but it does not always go to sleep by itself. Many mornings I walk into the room and the fan has been spinning all night! I have already tried the following:
    - Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    - Closed applications 1 by 1
    - Turned off airport
    - Uninstalled printer software (HP AIO 6100xi)
    - Replaced Battery
    - Installed new OS (10.4)
    - ReBooted (for all you PC users)
I am running out of ideas. I have been unable to link the sleep problem with any specific event or process. I would like to try and monitor which applications or processes are causing the PB not to sleep. Any Suggestions?

    Hi, Roz.
When you click "post a new topic" at the upper right corner of any forum topic list page, the new post with which you start your thread (topic) will be marked as a question by default.
    http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#questions
A question that you ask in the middle of any thread, whether it's a thread you started or one that you joined in the middle, isn't (and can't be) so marked. Only the first post in a thread can be officially marked as a question, and only the first poster (who asked it) has the opportunity to mark any reply to it as Helpful or Solved. Those options appear as buttons the original poster can click in each reply to his/her message — and only the original poster sees them. I don't necessarily agree that this is how the forums should work, but this is how they work now.
Apple replaced the underlying software that runs the Discussions about a month ago, and we're all still getting used to the "house rules" of the new system. There are still some kinks being worked out, too.
Concerning your sleep issue: try disconnecting any USB devices that are connected to your computer, and see whether that helps. If it does, disconnect them whenever you want your Powerbook to enjoy an uninterrupted nap.
