PowerBook has lost network printer

I have a PowerBookG4, G4 Graphite and iBook on a network with an HP LaserJet 1300n, all connected via a Netgear router. Normally the PB connects via an AirPort base station plugged into the router. Everything has worked fine for several years.
Recently a power glitch took out the AirPort Extreme power supply - no lights, no wireless. So the PB is now using either Ethernet, or the wireless part of the router. But it can't now see the printer, however it's connected.
All the Macs can connect to each other, and the G4 and the iBook can see and use the printer - anyone any ideas why the PowerBook can't?
I've repaired disk and permissions, and reinstalled the printer driver fresh from the HP site. All the Macs are on 10.4.11.

The other Macs are all using the same driver, right? (I mean the one you're trying to get the iBook to use.)
What happens if you connect the printer directly via USB? Can you add and print to it then with the HP driver?
You may need to unistall the printer software manually. HP have instructions to do this somewhere but they are incomplete in that deleting additional files they don't list may be necessary. If you are doing this, it is best to run the normal uninstaller first, I think and then see if you can get the list from HP support of additional files. Then you have to comb the directories to find everything you can that remains - especially in /Library and /Users/yourusername/Library. I've known at least one recent case where this worked when all else failed (and HP claimed the OS needed to be fixed). If you're not sure about a file, you can drag it to your desktop rather than deleting it. Then you can always put it back if necessary. When you're done, reboot the machine and repair permissions before installing the latest driver. Repair permissions again (I don't trust HP installers) before setting the printer up. You may have to connect directly to the printer to install the driver correctly.
The other possibility would be to use an alternative driver if one is available. Gutenprint has a driver for the 1300 but I don't know if it would work with the 1300n or not. You may already have such a driver, though likely not the current one, as OS X comes with a version of these drivers.

  • OfficeJet 4630 Defaults to Network Fax when user has selected Network Printer Instead on WIN XP

Hi, just installed the OJ4630 and selected the "Network Printer" as the default.  When choosing to print an MS Word document in "My Documents" the "Network Printer" correctly appears as the default.  But when choosing to print a picture in "My Pictures" the "Network Fax" becomes the default, which is an error.  Please advise, thanks!

    Hi
Thanks for reporting the issue. Here is the way to fix it.
Go to windows->Control panel-> Printers and devices
Right click on the 4630 Fax Printer, select the option Set as default printer and you'll see two choices there: one is printer driver and other one is fax driver.   You choose print driver to set as default.
    Done
    Hope it will help you.

  • Lost network printing

No problem printing to a networked Brother HL5170DN in Leopard. With Snow Leopard upgrade, all I get are pages with: Error Name: Undefined, Command: -12345X@PJL, Operand Stack. Unless I cancel the job at the printer, the pages will print without end.

    I had the same issue.
I just installed the old Brother drivers from 2006, deleted my printer with the built in CUPS printing and selected the new PPD instead.

  • My HP C3180 printer has lost its printer connection.   The download on the Apple support site downloads - but at the very end, I get an error message that my device cannot be found.  Can anyone help?

This happened all of a sudden.  Was it in response to a O/S 10 update?  The download from the Apple icon does not show a software update is needed; so a new driver is not there.  The download at the Apple Support site for HP printers downloads and seems to install until the end, when it says my device an HP C3180 cannot be found.  Can anyone help?

  • Password protecting a networked printer

Hello, here's the situation. My family has a networked printer (Brother 402cn) that's shared via a linksys 802.11g router with three computers (iMac G5, PB and Toshiba). The iMac is the main computer and I would like to password protect the printer so that one needs to input a password to be able to print from the iMac. How would I go about doing this?
    Thanks for your time,
    Eric
    PowerBook 12-inch 867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Unless password protection is a feature built into the printer driver, which I assume is not the case and for which you should be talking to Brother anyway, the only reliable way to do this is to:
1 get a network operating system, such as AppleShareIP, OS X Server, Novell, or one of the Windows servers
2 install the NOS on one computer; note that ASIP is going to require a Mac capable of booting OS 9, OS X Server is going to require a Mac capable of booting OS X, and the Novell and Windows servers will require machines capable of booting Windows.
3 plug the printer directly into the computer running the NOS.
4 set up and configure the print server software in the NOS. In particular, enable the password provisions.
5 put the NOS onto the network.
This is a non-trivial task. It is also a non-cheap task. Normally network printers on small home networks are set up so that anyone can print to them at any time. I have a Brother laser on my home net; when I don't want anyone to print to it, I either remove the paper (it can't print if there's no paper to print to... ) or simply unplug the power.
May I ask why you need to password-protect the printer? Even though I have a server installed, I'd not go to all the trouble of setting up passwords for the printer. Things could get very sticky if She Who Must Be Obeyed ever found out that she was locked out of the printer...

  • Network printing from MacBook (10.5.5) to HP3210 via Powerbook G4 (10.4.11)

The long winded title maybe says it all, but here's the problem.
We have two Macs; an older Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 that has an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-one printer/scanner hooked up via USB (and previously via Ethernet).
In another room we have MacBook running 10.5.5. This machine has successfully been set up to find the HP printer via Bonjour / network printing. However it has never been possible to send documents to print from within an application (i.e. File > Print within MS Word, for example). Attempting to print causes all applications we've tried to crash immediately on clicking File > Print or the shortcut. We have only ever been able to send documents to print by exporting them as PDFs and then dragging them on to the printer queue.
This is not so much of a huge problem, except that we often need to set Borderless printing etc from within the document, and dragging/dropping files onto the print queue doesn't seem to support these.
No such problems exist on the Powerbook, which prints fine with no crashes.
Could anyone suggest any possible causes? I'm happy to provide more info if needed; wasn't sure if this is enough.
    Many thanks in advance
    James

I can't tell exactly what's wrong, since you attached only
    snoop log.
But since you're using DHCP, I guess you are trying to
do PXE boot to install. When you use PXE boot, you need
to configure some vendor options (like SrootIP4, SrootNM
etc) and also create macros with dhcpmgr.
    there is documentation at
    http:docs.sun.com
so check the documentation to see what is missing.
If you've already done these, check NFS configuration
if all directory are correctly shared.

It can be tricky I can't explain it clearly. But go to the mac help at top of your screen and enter windows printing in the search box and try this first.
It took me a while to get it working because of firewall problems.
    sorry can't tell more

  • MacBook Airport card has lost its IP address and won't connect to my network

The Airport card on my MacBook has lost its IP address and will not connect to my network. It worked fine until about two or three days ago. Network Diagnostics says that the Airport now has a self-assigned IP number and will not connect to the Internet. I can't find any info anywhere that tells me how to restore the IP number, and I don't get how it can have a self-assigned number and not connect. I have AT&T U-Verse, and my iMac desktop and two iPhone 4s connect with little difficulty. The MacBook is three years old, and AppleCare just expired two months ago. I'm still running 10.6.8 on both machines. I found an article saying that sometimes DHCP leases expire, but my desktop still works ifne, and I've had both connected to the same network since the same time. The artcicle said that more than one machine can share an IP address, so I wanted to try to enter the desktop IP address into the laptop, but I can't find a way to do so, either. Any thoughts?

Have you tried making a New Location for each yet? The Automatic one get confused easily.
Some "nix" to try when it happens also...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
Sometimes having an all OFF Location can help, thanks to Gnarlodious...

    What should I do?

The first thing you should do is re-write your post to make it a bit more understandable. I got you have an Epson printer connected to your PC, however after that  your post doesn't make any sense. Are you attempting to print from your iMac, if so then you need to download and install Bonjour for Windows on your Windows machine. Then set Windows so it has printer sharing turned on and then on the iMac simply follow Apple's instructions for adding a printer.

  • Network printing has stopped working

Several years ago I connected my HP 6300 All-in-One to a wireless router.  My workstation is hardwired to the printer.  My laptop is connected via networking.
Everything worked perfectly until last week.  Now I can only print from my workstation.  I checked the printer sharing settings on both computers and they are set to be shared.
The printer has been acting pretty strange lately.  After every printing it gives me a "paper jam" error, when there is no jam.  The only way to clear it is to turn off the printer, pull out the paper, then turn the printer back on.  When it comes up I put the paper back and it will be fine for the next print job.  Then I have to do it all over again.  This started to happen before the network printing stopped working.
Also, I have my HP software disk.  I put it in my PC thinking I would try to reconfigure network printing again, but nothing happened.  I double clicked on 'setup.exe' in the root directory and the system hung.  I tried the disk on the laptop and couldn't even view the files in Explorer.
I'm running Windows XP on both computers.  All Windows updates are current.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Download and install the newer full featured software and drivers from the HP web site here.  Now try.

Snow Leopard breaks quite a few drivers - my Canon exhibited the same problem.
I eventually found updated drivers on the Canon website. You can try that with the HP, but if the all-in-one is more than a year or so old, don't hold your breath.
You can also try Software Update to see if it will offer new drivers, or failing that go to the Support Downloads site and search for HP updates.
In fact there's a new one for HP at the top of the list just now.
You may not necessarily want the latest one, though - check the specs to see if your model is covered; if not, search for the previous update etc.

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.
