My Powerbook won't stop going to sleep!

My powerbook (randomly) goes to sleep. I can be in the middle of typing and it will (for no reason) go to sleep. Sometimes it will do this several times within a minute. Needless to say, this can be extremely distracting and annoying while working.
Any idea why this is happening?

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.6 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!

IBook won't stop going to sleep!

Try as I might, I can't keep my iBook from going to sleep. The energy saver settings are set to sleep "Never." It's usually plugged into the wall and even when it is it goes to sleep after about 20 minutes. This is frustraiting as it make my away messages on AIM pointless. Anyone have any suggestions?

I just read up on resetting the PMU and it looks like it might be a slightly risky operation. Having the computer constantly go to sleep on me is annoying but I don't want to damage any of my data or hardware. Is it a safe operation to do and if I do it what kind of follow up operations would be required (like resetting the time, etc.)?

3 year old iMac 24 running OS10.7.4. After it has been on for a day or so, it stops going to sleep and becomes very slow. This only happens when Safari is running. Quitting Safari solves the problem. Has anyone else have the same problem?

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Powerbook won't wake up from sleep, trouble rebooting, kernal panic

Hi,
My powerbook has recently been having some troubles. This started over the weekend and nothing major has changed recently. I added some new RAM months ago, but that was like in June maybe, and it was Samsung module which i think is what that line of powerbooks used originally. The computer had been exhibiting signs of sluggishness and slow operation which i was mostly attributing to a pretty full HD that was in need of some optimazation and maintenance (which i do semi-regularly with Tech Tool Pro).
So, when it goes to sleep, or when the lid gets closed, it won't wake back up. black screen and unresponsive to any keys, though i can still hear the fans and some HD spinning noises inside. So, this forces me to force shutdown by holding the power key until i hear the machine turn off. Then reboot. When re-booting i have been getting a combination of kernal panics and freezes on startup, just hanging with a blue screen and a spinning startup indicator.
I can boot with no problem from an external Firewire drive. So i've run a ful Tech Tool sweep of the machine, optimized the HD and all that. Then, all is well UNTIL it goes to sleep again and then i'm back in the same cycle.
Any thoughts or advice here?

Yeah. I guess i am going to take it in this week. in the meantime though, i wonder if anyone can translate this panic.log entry from another round of kernal panics that i just went through this morning. I had about 4 or 5 of them in a row after trying to reset my PRAM to try and fix an issue with my external isight.

Powerbook freezes when it goes to sleep...

I recently took my 17" Powerbook G4 to get a new motherboard because the old one was giving off a false over-heat signal, causing the computer to shut down after a few minutes.
Anyway, I've got it back now, but it's starting to act up...but in a different way. If my computer ever goes to sleep, be it because I left it open for long enough that the screen goes black or if I close the lid without shutting down, it'll freeze up. I can wiggle my mouse to get it out of sleep mode, but then it just freezes and it's really annoying cause then I have to reboot. So now, I can't keep a website up and go away for an hour and then come back to it because it'll freeze. Every time I leave my computer I have to shut it down and then start it back up when I come back. It's a huge hassle and I'd love to know why it's doing this. Is it the new motherboard? Do I have to take it back for more repairs?
Please help!

My 15" Powerbook G4 just started doing the same thing yesterday - it freezes as soon as I wake it up from sleeping. Sometimes it freezes before it finishes booting up as well.

MacBook - stop going to sleep mode When lid closed

Hi ,
I am using handbrake to convert video files on macbook .
I want to close the laptop lid and still want the process to run in background .
Some one mentioned that if the laptop lid is closed and the system is running it gets heated rapidly .
I want to do this for 45 minutes ( commute between office and home ).
So , how do I close the lid ( display ) and not allow the system to go to standby/sleep.

You could also use InsomniaX.
I do not think that it's that bad for your macbook (heat generation); see this article: How to use your PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro or MacBook with the display closed.
I would not recommend picking your notebook up, though, since the hard disk's heads could scratch your hard disk... That's one of the things standby prevents.
By the way; why wouldn't you use standby? Your mac goes in standby rapidly, and wakes up even faster!

Powerbook won't wake up from sleep mode

Contrary to all the problems posted here of PBs unexpectedly beeing sent to sleep, my PB occurs to have a contrary problem for which I couldn't find a solution for.
When it is in sleep mode I can't awake it, neither by opening the lid nor pressing a key. I have to force shut down it by holding the power button and then it can restart it from save sleep aka hibernation. Furthermore the indicator light does not pulse but glow constantly when in sleep.
I tried to reset the PMU and the NVRAM but nothing seems to help. After resetting both the sleep and wakeup process will work fine one time, but really only one time. Upon next sleep (re-)activation the odd old problem occurs.
What could I try to get it properly working again?

My own PowerBook has, on very rare occsions, suffered the same problem. As it happens so rarely (perhaps less than six times in three years) I have not been able to troubleshoot it.
However I have read on previous threads that some people had the issue resolved when Apple replaced the logic board for them - but I don't know if that was a definitive fix.

"Timer" alarm won't stop going?

I have an iPhone 5 and use the "timer" on it a lot. Recently I noticed that sometimes, when the timer goes off, it won't allow me to tap "ok", the screen stays exactly the same and the tune continues to play. The only way I am able to solve this problem is by turning my phone off and on again. Is there any reason why this is happening or how I could fix it?

Have you tried a hard reset? Press power and home until the phone restarts and release when apple logo shows.
If it doesn't work, you can Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings

Powerbook won't sleep automatically

im reposting because no one replied to my initial post, my powerbook recently stop going to sleep on its on unless i do it manually. Every other energy saving settings works normally the display sleeps after a while but not the computer itself. Does anyone know whats going on?

I'm not sure here, but three things come to mind, but first two questions of my own:
• First, when you say the PB won't go to sleep unless you put it to sleep manually, do you mean that it just won't go to sleep when you close the lid, or does it also fail to go to sleep with the lid open after a set amount of time as well?
• Second, just so I'm clear, when you say you put the PB to sleep "manually," you mean you go to the Apple menu, select sleep and click, right?
Now, here are the only things that come to mind, in no particular order:
• First, you might try setting up a test account, separate from the one you normally use, and log in to that account and try putting the 'Book to sleep by means other than manually -- first by inactivity, using energy saver settings, and another time by closing the lid. See if either or both work when logged in to your test account.
• Second, you might try resetting your Power Management Unit. Instructions on how to reset your PMU can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
• Third, and this is the one I'm least hoping is the case, but it unfortunately may be worth thinking about: if your PB does go to sleep after a set amount of inactivity via as per your Energy Saver settings, but does not go to sleep when closing the lid, you may have a hardware problem related to the lid's latching mechanism. WIth my 'Book, it's only when the lid has firmly latched, will the unit enter sleep mode.
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention: throughout all your tests of the computer's sleep mode, keep an eye on the little "sleep light" on the latch button and make a note of when you see it pulsing as it properly should and when you do not. This information may help you, us, or, if need be, an AASP or Apple tech, better understand what's happening inside your machine.
Post back if any of the above yields further useful info, or if you learn more otherwise.

Help! powerbook won't go to sleep...suffering from insomnia

recently i noticed my powerbook has not been going to sleep. i've reset pram,nvram,open firmware, repaired disk permissions, ran cron scripts the whole 9 yards. I checked system logs and i get this:

Well, if you are sure its a warranty issue they will not charge you once the issue is resolved. But from what you have said it seems to be software related. I am at a loss what to suggest (sorry). The only last thing I'd say to check is the following:
1) Make sure your folder actions are off in the Finder. Control click on desktop and the menu should read "Enable Folder Actions." If it says Disable I'd say try it.
2) Try logging into a new "clean" new user account (after logging out of yours) and see if the machine will sleep then. If it does look at the StartUp items for your user.

Not going to sleep, overheating?

Just recently my MBP stopped going to sleep when the lid is closed, or when left open but not used(my setting tell it to go to sleep after 5 mins of no use). The heartbeat light only dims but stays the same, or is bright and stays the same.I noticed at the same time that it also has become very, very hot while in use. It only cools down when I actually click on 'Sleep' and leave it for a few minutes. This is the only way to ensure the heartbeat light 'beats'. Is this related? Also I don't hear any fans.

If you haven't already, download the widget "iStatPro" and check to see how hot your Mac is and how fast the fans are spinning. The fans are pretty quiet and usually are idling at 2000 RPM. If they are not speeding up to cool your Mac, there may be a problem.
It would probably be worth running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test to be sure that both the fans and the thermal sensors are working properly.
You might also check in Activity Monitor that you don't have some runaway process going on in the background that is keeping your Mac awake. Choose "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Check the CPU column for any excessive activity that shouldn't be there--often a runaway printer process, but it could be anything. If you find one, highlight it and quit it.
It sounds like some activity is going on that is preventing normal sleep--did this start after any particular software download or anything like that?

Touch won't stops charging when my eMac goes to sleep

My new 2G Touch connects and syncs fine with my eMac. It charges fine too. But the minute my eMac goes to sleep, the charging stops. Can that be fixed? Is it a USB 1.1 problem?

My eMac did the same. The power going to Firewire and USB ports is shut off when the computer is asleep. Don't think it can be 'fixed' - it's just a design decision on the eMac. I believe newer Macs do continue to power external devices whilst asleep though...
Maybe you could plug it in to an externally powered USB hub?

How can I stop my Macbook from going to sleep whilst I load the operating system (10.5) on?

I'm trying very unsuccessfully to reinstall the system from scratch, so that I have a clean computer. I'm starting with 10.5 and then going to upgrade in increments from that to the last operating system the computer will run, which is 10.6.8.
Firstly I've wiped the hard disk in Disk Tools and then started it up from the master disk of 10.5, and its telling me it will take 64 hours and some minutes to install, so I can't keep moving the mouse to stop it going to sleep for that long.
I know it sounds as though something is wrong, but I have run both Disk Tools and Tech Tool Pro through it and both say there's nothing wrong with either the computer or the hard disk, and it was running fine (if slow - but that's its age!) prior to this clean install.
This computer is the first of the intel Macbooks and is a single core intel processor with 1gb of Ram.
What I need to do is to stop it going to sleep during the install, as every time it does it just halts the install and over night, for instance, I'm no further forward than I was the night before, even though I left it going all night.
All I'm trying to do is get it to 10.6.8 so that I can run Bootcamp on it and turn it into a PC to do my accounts (and no, the software we use only runs on PC, but Paralles, VMWare Fusion etc still make it painfully slow to use, and It's bad enough having to do accounts without having to wait for it to do every move...)
I can't go straight to 10.6 as the only copies we have of this are "drag and drop" upgrades that Apple supplied with 3 of our other Macs. Also the computer won't read dual layer DVDs (too old) so I can't load the full copy we have made of the OS.

It's simply called Photos and there is no options/setting thing on it. I have windows 8, it's a stand alone photo library viewer.

Powerbook won't wake from sleep

My G4 1 ghz. 512 MB SDRAM 10.4.7 powerbook has started not waking up from sleep recently When I open the lid it won't wake up and the lighted power cord plug turns amber instead of green. Resetting the PMU botton doesn't do much. It sounds like the drive is running inside. Lately I have been removing the battery and pressing the start button. Then when I replace the battery It will then restart OK and I run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
It will work for a few days or a week or so then it does it again. Any advice?

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
set-defaults
press return
reset-all
press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
Also try posting this in the proper Powerbook forum, if the above doesn't work, in case it's a Powerbook issue.
