If you plan on using AT&T, why on earth would you purchase a Verizon iPhone? Doesn't make any sense. Yea, it will work on AT&T's network, but you won't get LTE, only 3G. LTE requires using a Verizon sim.
This is an extremely poor idea. Purchaase an officially unlocked iPhone, from Apple, if you want to use AT&T's network.

You have been syncing the iPhone with iTunes on your computer without a SIM card inserted in the iPhone for how long?
If the iPhone says connect to computer, this means there is a problem with your iPhone that requires restoring the iPhone with iTunes. As already provided, not having a SIM card inserted in an iPhone does not prevent or shouldn't prevent syncing the iPhone with iTunes. Depending on the iPhone model, it is required in order to restore the iPhone with iTunes.

The sim card number is on the sim card. If you don't have the sim card, there is no way to retrieve it, except perhaps from your carrier.

I got the same message.
I bought an iPhone 5 at full retail price from an AT&T store. I requested the phone to be unlocked through their unlock portal. The AT&T unlock system asked for the IMEI number, a copy of my receipt showing that I bougth the phone at "No Commitment" price. A few hours later I received a message from AT&T stating that the unlock request was approved. I then followed the instructions to back up the phone and restore it through Itunes. The phone activates normally with the AT&T SIM card. But when I insert my VODAFONE SIM I get the massage "THE SIM CARD... etc.
I tried again to back up & restore the phone 3 or 4 times, no success. I have also allowed 24 hours for the unlock process to complete. Still no luck.
I have checked again on the AT&T Unlock Status portal and it shows "Unlock approved".
Where is the issue here? Do I have to call Apple or return the phone to AT&T and get the unlocked phone through the Apple Store?

It appears that you have an iPhone that is locked to a carrier other than the one you were using. Now that you have tried to update the iOS, it has relocked. That is what happens if you are using a phone that has been hacked to unlock. You have also forfeited support from Apple and from this forum.

I tried restarting the phone several times, removing the SIM card several times, but it did not change anything, the SIM is still not detected.

Invalid SIM card after trying to update iPhone 4 software to iPhone 4S software

When I have tried to download the new iPhone 4S software my phone has said, "Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. I have never taken out my SIM cards, and have always followed all the directions to update to the new iPhone software. The apple store has always been really confused when I have brought my iPhone in to solve the problem of having an "invalid SIM card" and has consequently figured out that my SIM card and iPhone have both been "fried" by trying to update to the new software and have subsequently given me a brand new iPhone each time. This is a very frustrating problem with apple, and takes too much time to correct every time. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
