Mystery File in Trash and Locked Disks
Hi all,
Have some weirdness going on with my system. First, I have a mystery file appearing in my trash that can not be identified. It appeared about the same time as I started having problems with three of my external drives that I can not access anymore.
The file is named ␀␀␀÷␀␀.÷␀ . It says that it is an alias as type. If you try to get info, it disappears. It will not trash or secure trash. It can not be removed from the Trash folder.
At the same time I have had three external drives start malfunctioning. The files first became unaccessible, could not be copies or delete. The drives would not allow new files to be added. The drive will not unmount and indicates that the drive is engage with an application. Then, the file completely vanish from view. The disk show zero items, but the disk size still indicates the files are still on the drive.
I've use DiskWarrior and DriveGenius to try and repair one of the drives with no success. Even booting from the CD/DVD disk, the drives will not unmount.
I hope this is not some kind of virus or trojan horse.
Let me know if there is something I can do.
Thanks
Take a look at this topic: NUL file in Trash won't go away.
You'll almost certainly find this file is in the Trash on a Windows volume, and you'll need to use Windows to get rid of it.

Strange file in trash and it won't empty
I have a strange file in trash and it will not empty.
There is an alias file that has a strange name and a date of dec. 31, 1903. It will not go away when I empty. I put other files in the trash to see if they would be deleted and they do, but the other will not be deleted.
In the name of the file there is small characters that say "null" then õ's as well.
I took a few screen shots and posted them on photobucket, Take a look. Any suggestions or theories?

On the Mac there are actually multiple Trashes. The user Trash ".Trash" in user's home folder, and multiple (depending on number of volumes in machine) ".Trashes" folder(s) one each in root of volume. In the ".Trashes" folder there can be a trash folder for the user.
It looks like you have a corrupted/illegal character file which you can't delete via the UI. Via the terminal you may be able to. But... you have to go to the "trash" where the file actually is - and it may not be in "~/.Trash". But in the Mac desktop you will see it in your Trash icon.
Have a look at my post here
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5864381#5864381
and the rest of the thread.
Get into Terminal and check your home trash folder, see if the file is there then go to the other trash folders ".Trashes" and look for it there and kill it with "sudo" command as shown in my other post here.

I am unable to secure delete those files in the Trash. Many files are marked as "locked" Is this way I cannot secure delete these files?
Can you not just select them and remove the locked flag?

Mysterious File in Trash after emptied.
After I empty my trash there is a mysterious file that appears. I try to move it and it disappears, I try to Copy and paste and it asks for my password then disappears. Two separate file names show up at different times. L2QQU6rVMLLrm6 and ntDu9OqOifdnlP .
Also, after I add one item to trash and empty (secure or regular) it shows its emptying 6 items.
hmmm. this is a new issue and Im freaked. am I being hacked?element619 wrote:
Thanks, But I dont have bootcamp installed...no windows. I restarted and it doesnt seem to be happening at the moment. do you think someone could have been on my computer?
no, I do not think that. do you have any external drives attached? those files might be from an external and you need to empy trash with that drive attached to get rid of them. also start disk utility and verify your hard drive. if it reports any damage, reboot from the leopard install DVD, start disk utility from the Utilities menu and repair the drive. -
Mystery file in trash at startup
Hi!
I have this mysterious file in the trash every time I turned the iMac. It has been going on for a while now and I can't get rid of it. Even secure empty trash did not work. When I click on get info, instead of giving me information about the file like all other files do, this one blinks and then disappears and the trash gets emptied. This is the filename ␀␀␀õ␀␀.␀␀ I hope you can read the filename. I even copied the file to pages and made it bigger but this is how it came out when pasting. Under the kind column it says alias. I cannot find this file anywhere in the computer. I have also ran disk utility. Does anyone know what kind of file this is and how to get it rid of it permanently. Thanks. You might try starting up from your Mac OS X installation disc; at the first Installer screen, go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal drive; select the drive, not the volume indented under the drive. Go to the +First Aid+ tab and run +Repair Disk+. If there is some minor data corruption causing this problem, +Repair Disk+ may fix it.
If you decide to start using another user account, I would probably use the Shared folder (in the Users folder). Turn ON +fast user switching+ so that I can easily go back and forth between accounts. Then move the files and folders I wanted to move from the old account to the Shared folder. Then switch to the new account and move those files and folders to the equivalent locations in the new account home folder. Do this one user home folder sub-folder at a time.
Note: Dragging files and folders to and from the Shared folder is a move, not a copy. That is, the files will appear at the new location and disappear from the previous location.
If you use Time Machine, you can probably use Migration Assistant while logged in to the new account and migrate from the Time Machine archive. I've never done that myself, but migrating from Time Machine is one of the options. -
Mysterious file in trash containing null chars
in my trash appears a mysterious file. ive made some screenshots of it:
http://home.arcor.de/matthiascando/images/finderError1.png
http://home.arcor.de/matthiascando/images/finderError2.png
it resists any attempts to empty the trash. when i click on it, it disappers only to show up some seconds later again.
i did a rm -rf ~/.Trash - no result. with ls -al ~/.Trash/ it doesnt appear in the terminal.
i tried to create a new account but after a while (a day or so) the file is there again.
has anybody an idea what to do or some experience?Do you happen to have "show hidden files" enabled? I once had the same problem- a file continually appeared on my desktop and right after deleting it, it would reappear. I then remembered that I had used Onyx to show me hidden files during the installation of some software, and I had never hid them again. That may be one of those hidden files.

Trash and locked pictures problem
I have a problem with deleting stuff from my trash - i know this is a common problem but I have tried EVERYTHING!
I have some pictures that are locked and some I can unlock but some I cant, it says that I dont have the access (I can only read) but I am the administrator on the computer. So I cant go to get info and change the box to unlock them.
I have tried taking them out and putting them in a file on my desktop to unlock them and it is just duplicating them. So I now have about 700 locked files.
I have tried using terminal and dragging the contents of the trash in and using random commands that I dont understand. I have tried sudo (think thats right) commands.
I have also repaired my permissions in disk utility.
I'm using leopard and my version is 10.5.8.
And that annoying press the option key when you press delete but that just doesn't work.
Please help I'm desperate!Welcome to the Apple discussions.
One way to force delete everything in the trash is to use OnyX. You can download it from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html . It's also a good tool to do cleaning and disk maintenance. You should have a disk backup before using any disk maintenance software. -

I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

UNABLE TO VIEW ANY FILES IN TRASH, AND UNABLE TO DELETE THEM.
Hi i wondered if someone can help ,me on this one as i have searched for an answer and nothing works.
I have upgraded to my new iMac and migrated all my files over, i have now deleted some of the unwanted files and folders, to free up space.
HOWEVER - i have tried deleting them and cant, so as some of them are locked i went back into the trash to unlock them and even though there are thousands of files in the trash none of them are viewable, so i cant drag them back out, drag them to the terminal window or anything.
I have repaired privileges
I have tried to use the terminal window and delete files, but cant view them to drag them
I have tried to secure deleted them
My problem is i cant view the files so i cant do anything with them.
Does any one have any ideas,
should i try to delete the .trash file as i think someone mentioned in which case how do i do that.
Any help would be fantastic. Thank you in advance
Kris WatsonI have managed to resolve this problem (however it is still deleting the files so fingers are crossed still.) Thanks for the help by the way.
A friend showed me a way to do it, thought ide put it out there so people might benefit from it.
I restarted with the shift key pressed down. after about 4-5 mins it starts in Safe Boot mode, ive logged in, and started to secure delete the files and it seems as though it is working although very slowly as there are thousands of files.
The reason the are so many files is that they are all 'old' time machine back ups from my old powerbook. Me being the extra cautious bunny that i am have several copies of every file anyway 'just in case', so it will take house but it will free up huge amounts of space.
thanks again -
Time for Secure Empty Trash and Free Disk Space
Hi Forum,
Can anyone give me a guesstimate of how long secure empty trash would take or can take? I have 290 items and its been there for about an hour.
Also, if I choose to free disk space, how long approximately would this take? Is it worth doing this? I have 40gb "free" now.
Thanks.
Sit's not necessarily the number of files, but more the total size of all the files combined. But lets just say it dose take a while to do. you really only need to use secure empty trash on files of a sensitive nature. Such as financial information (credit card numbers, back information, social security numbers)
Also by spending all that time writing to the hard drive, over and over. Witch is what secure empty trash dose. your reducing the life span of your hard drive. Like car tires your hard drive is only good for so many miles.
I ones secure emptied trash on a GB worth of data. I remember it takings hours. I ones tried scrubbing a whole hard drive, after two days I stopped it because I didn't realize it was going to take so long. That being said it doesn't take too long to scrub a few files that are a few MB in size. -
Hello,
A few days ago, after i emptied the trash, I noticed it still had "paper" in it. When I clicked on it, on the bottom it said there was "1 item" but I didn't see any files in the trash. It's not a pressing matter, but I would just like to know how to delete it.Do you know if the file is on your HD or an external one?
Have done search of discussions, have a look & see if helps.
