Names of Oracle Redo logs

Hi!
Since we copied SAP system and execute the redo log backups our redo log s have the following convention:
- ARCH02000_070438484190.001
We would like to have instead the other convention:
- <sid>ARCH02000_070438484190.001
Quesiton:
1) Which parameter is responsible for this setting?
2) Which file (init<sid>.ora, other) other tools (e.g. brtools) should be edited therefore?
Thank you!
regards

Hi Holger,
the complete name is concatenated from
log_archive_dest
or
log_archive_dest_1
and
log_archive_format
The recommended Parameters are
log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=/oracle/SID/oraarch/SIDarch'
log_archive_format='%t_%s_%r.dbf'
which result in
/oracle/SID/oraarch/SIDarch%t_%s_%r.dbf
with %t expanded to the treadinstance and usually will be just "1"
and %s beinig expanded to the sequence number
and %r being expanded to the resetlogsid
So I'll guess your setup is
log_archive_dest=/oracle/SID/oraarch/SID
log_archive_format=' ARC%S_%R%T'
And the one system that is diffrent just has
log_archive_dest=/oracle/SID/oraarch/
> When I try to execute the following commando:
>
> ALTER SYSTEM set log_archive_format=FI1ARC%S_%R%T scope=spfile:
>
Try it with quotes around it. The "percent" is a special char to sql.
ALTER SYSTEM set log_archive_format='FI1ARC%S_%R%T' scope=spfile

  • Disk array configurations with oracle redo logs and flash recovery area.

    Dear Oracle users,
We are planning to buy the new server for oracle database 10g standard edition. We put oracle database file, redo logs, and flash recovery area on each of disk array. My question is what is the best disk array configuration for redo logs and flash recovery area? RAID 10 or RAID 1? Is that possible we can duplicate Flash recovery area to the other location (such as net work drive) at the same time? Since we only have single disk array controller to connect to the disk arrays, I am try to avoid the single failure that will lose archive logs and daily backup.
    thanks,
    Belinda

Thank you so much for the suggestion. Could you please let me know the answer for my question of FRA redundancy?

  • Oracle Redo Log Activity

    Hi Members,
I have an Oracle database instance where the log files continue to grow even where there is no activity from application usage.
What I have noticed that there appears to be some frequency pattern as to when this log activity occurs.
My question is, Are there any default Oracle processes or scheduled jobs that will result in this log data generation.
    Thanks
    Alan

    Hi
You will have many background processes running and they generate text logs. You have e.g. MMON, automatic backups (when enabled), in 11g you have autotask process which will tune top sqls, gather stats etc. So even when nobody connects to the db you will still see some activities there.

  • GoldenGate Extract Process will not read from redo log with manual help

    Here is my issue.
I have GoldenGate replication successfully setup one-way from 1 Source to Many Targets. There is 1 source extract on the DB and many pumps that push the trail file data to the Targets. Replication does work but after manual help with starting up the Source Extract process.
    If I execute the command:
GGSCI> alter extract <source extract name> begin now
    GGSCI> view report <source extract name>
The extract starts and reads the source trail file but will not process data, I continually see in the ggserr.log file "OGG-01515: Positioning to begin time MMM DD, YYYY, HH:MM:SS" The date and time are irrevelant for this problem.
When I see this, I SQ*Plus into the database and look in the v$log table for the current log and sequence #.
I return to GGSCI and issue the following command:
    GGSCI> alter extract <source extract name> thread 1 extseqno <sequence # from v$log query>
    GGSCI> start <source extract name>
It then works as expected. Why is this so? I thought the alter extract <source extract name> begin now would do the same output.
We do use ASM but like I said when I issue the:
    GGSCI> alter extract <source extract name> thread 1 extseqno <sequence # from v$log query>
    It works like it should.
    Very weird.

Yes, supplemental logging is enabled on both the source and the targets, but why would supplemental logging on the targets have any affect on why the Source Extract on the source can't read from the source redo log?
This is not a RAC database, rather single-instance with one thread. Also, we are using DBLOGREADER functionality as it is an 11.2.0.3 database.
My issue is simply, when I start the source extract from being down, meaning it isn't running, I issue this command:
    alter <source extract> begin now
    start <source extract>
    view report <source extract>
OGG-01515 Positioning to begin time <today's date and time> ie Mar 4, 2013, 3:26:39 PM. (this is repeated over and over and over)
    If I perform a
    info <source extract> detail---> I see the following:
Log Read Checkpoint Oracle Redo Logs 2013-03-04 15:26:39 Thread 1, Seqno 0, RBA 0 (why is it showing 0, becuase it can't read the redo, WHY NOT?)
    Extract Source BEGIN END
    Not Available <today's date> <today's date> (repeat....)
However, if I retreive the Redo Log number and I issue:
alter spe thread 1 extseqno (redo log sequence #)
    start spe.
Then it works okay. I have to manually tell it what redo log to begin reading from. Why?

  • Differetn redo log names on primary db and standby db.

we are using oracle 10.2.0.2 to run sap. we plan to use data guard.the os is suse linux 10.3.
the archived redo log name's prefix is '1_' like '1_167109_678247864.dbf' on primary db.
if i recover standy database mannuly with cmd 'ALTER DATABASE RECOVER automatic standby database' to fix redo log gap, the required archived redo log name's prefix is 'PRDarch1_' like 'PRDarch1_167260_678247864.dbf'.
i checked the oracle parameter 'LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT' on both side were set to '%t_%s_%r.dbf'.
my question is the different name have any effect on datagurad? Or we just can ignore it, because it doesn't matter.
    thanks in advance.

I'm not interested in a debate so much as finding the answer. Thanks for the info. And welcome to the forum by the way.
That said I would think B14239-05 would answer your question.
    In section 5.7.1 it shows:
    LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT=log%t_%s_%r.arc
You may be correct on the default, but they only answer I can give you is I have never setup Data Guard that way. I hope this saves you some time.
Where did you find this? (log_archive_dest_1 = "LOCATION=/oracle/PRD/oraarch/PRDarch MANDATORY REOPEN",)
I would consider avoiding the use of MANDATORY. This attribute will cause you a world of trouble if your Standby is unreachable.
Also if you are using a Flash Recovery Area you do not need to setup a local archiving destination.
If you are not using Flash Recovery with Data Guard you should. Try testing a failover without it.
    Best Regards

  • LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT failed to change name and dest of primary redo logs

    Hi,
we tried to create standby using RMAN and we used db_file_name_convert and log_file_name_convert,every thing went fine but when we tried to put the database in MRM the primary database redo logs got corrupted.
what could be the reason for this parameter failing.
    Thanks,
    Mastan Ali

Does your database have a version?
Did you set those parameters on the standby database, or in the primary?
What error message are you getting?
Do you agree this forum doesn't contain a set of mindreaders and ouaja board users and fortunetellers, so posting 'It doesn't work' is useless?

  • Oracle 10g R2 Database Redo Log Files

I had 3 redo log files, each of size 50 MB. i added 3 more redo log files, each of size 250 MB.
Database is running in archive mode, files are generating with different sizes like 44 MB and 240 MB, i need to know is this harm for database or not?
to make all archive redo log files generation of equal size what should i do?
    Please guide

    Waheed,
When the redo log switch willbe happening, oracle would be asking archiver to log that into the archive file.So in case you have any parameters set to make the switch happen at certain time, depending on the activity of teh database, the archive file size may vary. There is no harm wit the different sizes of the files. What matters is the transaction informaiton contained in them not their size.
to make all archive redo log files generation of equal size what should i do?
As mentioned by Syed, you can make the switch happen at a defined interval which will not ensure but still will be a step to make the archive files of the same size. But I shall say you should bother more about making sure that the files are available rather than their size.

  • How to change redo log size in oracle 10g

    Hi Experts,
Can anybody confirm how to change redo log size in oracle 10g?
    Amit

    Dear Amit,
You can enlarge the size of existing Online Redo log files, by adding new groups with different size of files (origlog$/mirrlog$) and then carefully droping the old groups with  their associated inactive files.
Please refer SAP Note 309526 - Enlarging redo log files to perform the activity.
    Steps to perform:
STEP-1. Analyze the exisiting situation and prepare an action plan.
    A. You have to ensure that no more than one log switch per minute occurs during peak times.
It may also be necessary to increase the size of the online redo logs until they are large enough.
Too many log switches lead to too many checkpoints, which in turn lead to a high writing load in the I/O subsystem.
    Use ST04 -> Additional Functions --> Display GV$-Views
    There you can select
Gv$LOG_HISTORY --->for determing your existing LOG switching frequency.
    GV$LOG -
    > list the status(INACTIVE/CURRENT/ACTIVE) /size/sequence no. of existing online redolog files
GV$LOGFILE  --- > list the information of existing online  redolog files with their storage paths
You can document the existing situation of Online Redo Log Fiile management before going to enlarge Redo Log Files.
It will be helpful, if something goes wrong while performing activities.
    B. Based on above Situation analysis, Plan your New Redo Log Group and there Members with new optimal size.
    e.g.
Group No.         Redo Log File Locations  u201C/oracle/<SID>/u201D                  Size
                                 /origlogA                  /mirrlogA
    15                        log_g15m1.dbf         log_g15m2.dbf               100 MB
    17                        log_g17m1.dbf            log_g17m2.dbf               100 MB
                                /origlogB                    /mirrlogB
    16                       log_g16m1.dbf          log_g16m2.dbf            100 MB
    18                       log_g18m1.dbf            log_g18m2.dbf            100 MB
    Continue to next.....

  • Oracle standby/redo log file shipping keeps needing logs re-registering

    Hi
We have Log File Shipping enabled and the prod system ships redo logs over to the LFS server. It's kept 24 hours behind. It usually ships the logs (and I believe automatically registers them) without issue.
EXCEPT - it keeps complaining about missing redo log files.
The file is usually there; but just needs registering with:
    alter database register or replace logfile '/oracle/S1P/saparch/S1Parch1_636443_654987192.dbf';
(we found if we left out the 'or replace' it takes a very long time or even hangs)
It then plods on and applies the next... can go for another 2 or 3... or 20... but then often gets stuck again, and you need to register the next.
Can spend whole days on this...!!
We did try running a script to register the next 1365 redo logs! It failed on 4, so I ran it again... it worked on those 4, but turned up 3 others it had worked with before! HUH?!? So manually did those 3 ... fine... it carried on rolling forward... but got stuck after 10 minutes again when it hit another it reckoned needed registering (we'd already done it twice!!).
    Any ideas?

  • DB13: Execute Redo log backup of remote Oracle 11g database fails

    Dear Experts,
First of all I have to state I am not very experienced in administrating (Oracle) databases, but I would like to ask you all the following:
We run two SAP Systems with each their own database on the same host:
    1. SAP SRM ABAP system on Oracle 11g
    2. SAP NetWeaver WebAS Java (Portal) on Oracle 11g
We would like to schedule backups of the Java database in transaction code DB13 on the SRM ABAP system.
    Actions already taken:
    - We have maintained the proper database connection to the Java database and have set file system permissions correctly (according SAP Note 102570). Connection in transaction DB02 is fine and stats are showing for both databases.
    - We have maintained enviroment settings for <SID>_ORACLE_HOME and <SID>_SAPDATA_HOME and for the shell (csh).
    - Destination SAPXPG_DBDEST_<host> is maintained in SM59.
When we schedule a Redo log backup of Java System in DB13 and execute immediately, we receive the following error:
Process died due to signal 11
SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE mislukt voor BRARCHIVE - oorzaak: unknown
    Any tips?
Thanks in advance & Best regards,
    Jan Laros

    Hi Eduardo,
Thank you for your reply.. Today I am at another customer, so I can not check it. But is seems to me that the BRTOOLS are up-to-date as we installed the system fresh and imported the Support Package and kernel updates right afterwards.
I will check which BRTOOLS are used tonight, anyway.
    Best regards,
    Jan

  • How to move temp file, redo log to different drive oracle 9i

    Hi ,
    I am using oracle 9i
by mistakenly, i have instaled oracle installable on system drive i mean c: drive.I have installed teh database on D: drive.
For tunning perfomance i would like to move the redlog files and temp files to different drive.
Could you please explain me the step by step procedure how to do this
    Thanks
    AITS

    Very easy -
Create a new temp tablespace with the files on the drive you want, make it the default temp tablespace for any users/schemas you have created, then drop the old temp tablespace including datafiles.
For the redo logs, create new groups, again with the logfiles on the dirves you want them on, cycle out of the old ones with "alter system switch logfile;" then drop them.

Please note that when you use this command, you are doing nothing to the actual files on the OS. You are simply changing the db's knowledge of them, as stored in the control file.
