NAS Backup with Workgroup and Domain

I have used these in the past and would recommend for your purpose Seagate NAS 2 bay

I am looking for a small NAS backup box for small company to backup "off-site" 1TB would hold all the data, but looking at 1-4 TB / raid is not a must, single drive should do. The off-site location will be with about 4 pc that are just workgroup. I want those pc to backup to the drive in a folder they have access to. Then the main office that will backup to this as "off-site" is AD and I would like for the NAS to support users from the AD, so the local users cannot access the data.
 Price - $100-$400 .
Any suggestions?
Thanks

  • NAS to NAS Backups with versioning

I was looking at picking up a pair of NSS units. The goal would be to have an offsite nas mirror the in office for disaster recovery. I believe the rsync feature on the NSS will do this. However, I was wondering about versioning. Is there a way to make the offsite NAS keep previous versions of files which are overwriten or changed in case we need to restore to a previous version?

I am wondering the same thing. It appears the CDP add on has some kind of versioning.
I am going to try Logmein Backup with a couple NSS326 units this week. Will post back results. The logmein backup product has been a miracle product for us and they say it supports NAS now...
Was hoping for some kind of built in native versioning or "retention"as it is called in the backup world..

  • RMAN Backup with ASM and Standby in place

    Hi All,
We are planning to upgrade our database from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.3. We have ASM as storage on primary and phisical standby is in place.
I want to make a cut of point for backup, i.e if I restore till that poit on primary standby should continue to work. I need not create standby.
We are using rman for backup and primary db uses asm for data, archive and redolog storage.
I have a online complete db backup at 12:00PM. At say 6:00pm i take primary down and apply all archives on standby and cancel recovery on standby along with taking it down. On primary i mount db and take controlfile backup and all archive log backup using rman.
Now i continue with upgrade and many more changes on primary. I will not touch standby. We decide to revertback at 10pm on primary. If I wan to return back to 6:00pm state on primary and standby.
I believe I will restore controlfile backup taken at 6:00pm with db in mount phase. Restore dbfiles from online backup and recover using archives.
My question is do i need to open with resetlogs? Then I will lose my standby which was up to date at 6:00pm. Can I not backup redofiles at 6:00pm with db in mount phase and i restore them then i need not open with reset logs and my stnadby will continue from that point.
Please guide me..Is there way to backup redologs when db is in mount phase and using asm for storage using rman.

There are quite a bunch of steps involved and you need to do some documentation reading.
Do you plan to create the test database on the same machine or different RAC system?
Which version of Oracle are you using? What OS?
There is plenty of information on the web if you search for "duplicate database RAC ASM". Did you try?

It errored out after it has already created some folders and files as indicated in the first post.Tried the same steps several times just make sure it was repeatable by closing Rescue and Restore app and starting it again. The network between the share host and my W510 was a direct RJ45 cable connection, so zero hop.  In the end I used Windows 7 Backup and Restore to do full backup, using the same \\server\sharename, the network share was mapped without a problem. But then Windows 7 Restore CD wasn't able to map network share - giving me 0x800704cf. Googling shows lots questions raised on this but no fix.
    Update:
Last night, I gave it a shot again. For some reason, RR was able to mapped the network share using \\IPaddress\sharename (this time I used a different folder and a diferent sharename). OK great, but after 10 hrs it's at 88% completion, did my math, estimated elasped time is 12 hrs, Wow! The image backup with Windows 7 Backup took 5 hr 51 min with 132GB in the WindowsImageBackup folder. RR is 2x slower!
On the other hand, as it's still running, the est. backup folder size is 106GB. RR does a better job in compression - a 20% reduction in size compared with Windows' at the cost of 2x time.
Going back to the Windows 7 Restore CD 0x80704cf error when mapping the network share, found an Internet user posting that he succeede by providing a NIC driver.

  • How to access another computer's backups with Rescue and Recovery

    Hi all,
I'm in the middle of a disaster. It is a long story, but basically, here is what I need to do now:
My laptop was backing up to my NAS using Rescue and Recovery (R+R). I no longer have that laptop. How can I access those backups and retrieve files using another Lenovo PC now?
Here's what I've tried on the Lenovo PC to access the laptop's backups:
When I open Windows Explorer and go directly to the NAS, I can see the RRBackups folder and the directory structure, but all the files are like Data0, Data1, etc. So can't restore those.
When I open R+R on my PC and try to restore individual files from Network, nothing shows, as if there are no backups on the NAS.
When I press F11 and boot into R+R, I can see the Scheduled Backups on my NAS, but when I click on them to access individual files, they appear empty.
    Thanks for your help.

    bighill89, welcome to the forum,
do you know which version of R&R was installed on the ThinkPad and did you by any chance create a cd?
If there are version differences between the two systems there may be problems recovering data out of the backups, using a rescue cd may help. The only doubts I have here is whether or not the correct network driver will be present on the cd allowing you to access the NAS.

  • NAS server with mp3s and Itunes for Mac & Windows. How to keep all running?

a)I have mp3s on the server (a NAS Hard Drive) when I run I-tunes even after selecting a a folder in the network hard drive tries to move the music on my local macbook under the i-tunes music folder location, this happens usually when I get I-tunes updates and re-installation. Is any way to stop I-Tunes to move files? I have no space in my Mac for all the mp3s.
    b) what is the best way to share the music files between two computers with I-Tunes, one being a Mac and the other a Windows? This, without screwing the files.
    c) I-Tunes generated a lot of duplicates. My guess is the same song may apply to different albums. Any way to correct this problem, so no more duplicates?
    Thank You
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

If you want cross-paltform comaptibility limit the fonts to OpenType or Windows TrueType formats, both of which work on both Mac and PC. To avoid missing font warnings the fonts must either be installed on each computer, or they must be in a folder named Document Fonts in the same location as the .indd file they are to work with. Packaging the file will build taht folder for you.
the rest of the stuff in your list won't help you. .idml would allow you to open on an older version, but does nothing for your situation. Embedding the links will keep you from having missing links, but so will packaging, and embedded links will make the file much larger and harder to work with.
For goodness sake, don't even think about outlining the text. It stops being text when you do that and you can no longer edit it.
And finally. do yourself a big favor and don't attempt to actually work on your file directly from the flash drive. Copy the whole package folder to the hard drive, work on it, then copy back. You don't want to know how many files are fatally damaged by write errors on flash drives.

  • Ayone used Intego Personal Backup with Leopard and an Airport Disk

I have been very successfully using Intego's Personal Backup program with OSX 10.4.10 on an intel iMac and a MacbookPro with an Iomega 750GB hard drive linked to an Airport Extreme. I've set the computers to automatically switch on nightly (via energy saver) 5 minutes before the Intego backup script is set to run. The script runs in the background and automatically logs on to the Airport Disk and selects the backup folder. After finishing the backup the script then quits the program and shutsdown the computer. It's very convenient and neat as it only backsup files that have changed and they are full usable copies rather than incremental backups.
Has anyone tried this using Leopard? Could this be a potential solution to the lack of Time Machine being used with Airport Disks?

    I've tried it, without success.
I have a clean install of Leopard. I bought a new Airport Extreme and Iomega UltraMax 1TB drive to go with Leopard, so this part of the setup is all new to me. I have been using Personal Backup, without problem, for ages.
What I find is that when I select the Airport Disk as the destination drive, the Spinning Beachball of Death starts and I have to Force Quit Personal Backup. A real shame as I really wanted to use the Airport Disk as a common disk between my iMac and iBook, and Personal Backup seemed the obvious way to get the iMac files on to the Airport Disk (the iBook only needs read-only access).
If anyone gets this going, I'd love to find out how.

  • How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?

How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?
Several times in the last year, I've gotten a message that Time Machine needs to completely redo my backup. Using the wireless connection, this takes almost two days. Is there a way to do the backup with ethernet and then switch back to wireless? Thanks.

May I know what is needed to make sure the MacBook is able to see Time Capsule on ethernet?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire gateway to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
If AirPort Utility cannot "see" the Time Capsule now, you will need to perform a "hard reset" by holding in the reset button for 7-8 seconds or so and then reconfigure the Time Capsule. You can use the same Time Capsule name and password, etc. as before.
Configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network" and select the Bridge Mode option when it appears during the setup using AirPort Utility.
Once the Time Capsule is configured, restart the entire network again. Power down everything, start the 2Wire first and then start each other device after that one at a time about a minute apart.
Now you can connect your Mac directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule for the backup using another Ethernet cable. In general, about 20-25 GB per hour will transfer.
The Time Capsule will broadcast a much faster wireless network than the 2Wire can provide, so you might want to leave the setup "as is" for awhile after the first backup is complete. If you decide to use the Time Capsule as your main wireless access point, you would want to turn the wireless off on the 2Wire since two wireless networks in close proximity can create interference problems.
Or, if you want to use the wireless on the 2Wire, you could turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule. Then backups will occur over the 2Wire wireless, or over Ethernet.
I don't really recommend the "Join a wireless network" setting on the Time Capsule for most users, but you could go back to that setup as well if you want after the first backup is complete.

  • Error While Doing Backup with SuperDuper

Can anyone help me resolve this error? I used Disk Utility before SuperDuper and that backup also failed.

I was trying to create a bootable backup to an external USB drive prior to installing my new internal hard drive. I simply deleted the LAME Framework folder that was giving the error and was able to complete the process. I think that had something to do with MP3 encoding, converting. Hopefully not in relation to iTunes. Anyone know?

  • Can I add a WinServer 2012 into a mix child Domain with 2008 and 2003?

The founctionall level is 2003 and the main domain is mix with 2008 and 2003. The user need the templete of Server 2012 and use the "new" group policy so that they are able to use the "new" feature in windows 8 (which I totally
do Not think is much useful). I've a plan that join the 2012 server into a child domain as a DC but I don't know if that will cause any problems. Can I do so?
    Thanks all.

    @Darren: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj592683.aspx
For Windows 8 a change to how the TPM owner authorization value is stored in AD DS was implemented in the AD DS schema. The TPM owner authorization value is now stored in a separate object which is linked to the Computer object. This value was stored as
a property in the Computer object itself for the default Windows Server 2008 R2 schemas.
To take advantage of this integration, you must upgrade your domain controllers to Windows Server 2012 or extend the Active Directory schema and configure BitLocker-specific Group Policy objects.
Windows Server 2012 domain controllers have the default schema to backup TPM owner authorization information in the separate object. If you are not upgrading your domain controller to Windows Server 2012 you need to extend the schema to support this change.
To support Windows 8 computers that are managed by a Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2008 domain controller
There are two schema extensions that you can copy down and add to your AD DS schema:
    TpmSchemaExtension.ldf
This schema extension brings parity with the Windows Server 2012 schema. With this change, the TPM owner authorization information is stored in a separate TPM object linked to the corresponding computer object. Only the Computer object that has created
the TPM object can update it. This means that any subsequent updates to the TPM objects will not succeed in dual boot scenarios or scenarios where the computer is reimaged resulting in a new AD computer object being created. To support such scenarios, an update
    to the schema was created.
    TpmSchemaExtensionACLChanges.ldf
This schema update modifies the ACLs on the TPM object to be less restrictive so that any subsequent operating system which takes ownership of the computer object can update the owner authorization value in AD DS. However, this is less secure as any computer
in the domain can now update the OwnerAuth of the TPM object (although it cannot read the OwnerAuth) and DOS attacks can be made from within the enterprise. The recommended mitigation in such a scenario is to do regular backup of TPM objects and enable auditing
to track changes for these objects.
To download the schema extensions, see Schema Extensions for Windows Server 2008 R2 to support AD DS backup of TPM information from
    Windows 8 clients.
If you have a Windows Server 2012 domain controller in your environment, the schema extensions are already in place and do not need to be updated.
Also, if you check the GPO's in 2012, there are specific templates for Windows8/2012 and specific (legacy) templates for Windows 7.

  • Moved win 7 system from Domain to Workgroup and can't log in

I just left my old domain (server was retired some time ago) on my Windows 7 laptop, and created a workgroup to move it into. I was using domain administrator account and password consistently on this machine, and when I did this. I was prompted for Administrator
account name and password before windows would make this change, so I thought everything would be ok. Password succeeded.
Now system boots to login page displaying icon and existing name for the computer. (computer was named before joining domain long ago). No other icons are available, no link to log into other accounts, and no password entry field is present (I didn't initially
create a password for new workgroup). When I click icon, "welcome" appears briefly, then "logging off", then I am taken back to same login screen. Shutdown options appear in lower right, but only include shut down, hibernate, sleep, and
restart; no option for log off or change user.
F8 > Last known good config yields same result. I can log in on safe mode, but windows explorer is not present in start menu or task bar, and start menu left (main) panel is featureless above all programs. Control panel and standard options appear in start
menu right panel. I can start explorer from search field, and full directory structure in accessible. Computer named account is shown to be administrator type. I have option available to create a password, but don't want to make things worse.
I want to be able to log onto this account on computer normally, without reinstalling windows. This is my only objective at this time. I don't actually need to be in a workgroup, but that seemed the only way to leave domain. My purpose in leaving domain was
so I could create a homegroup to connect with virtualized windows 7 on my linux desktop system, and to avoid other annoyances that have come up with being in domain.
    Guidance please? Thanks in advance...

  • Real problems with ISP based DNS and Domain

    Hi all,
I have an external based domain name that would like to incorpate into my new server. At the moment, the ISP (1and1) is dealing with Mail and Hosting. Ideally, I would like to run the Mail Exchanger and leave the hosting to the ISP. However, I' having some trouble configuring the whole thing!
Firsty, I'm slightly at a loss as to what to call my DNS when setting up the server for the first time. Should this be the same as my current Domain name? If so, would htis cause conflicts running this name side by side with my ISP (even if it would just be used for file sharing etc?).
I have a few more questions but if anyone can help me with this one I'd be most greatful. I'm fairly new to Servers (one of the reasons for getting an OS X Server as I was told of it's ease of use!!) but willing to learn!
    Cheers,
    Oli

You can still get iTunes 9 for OS X 10.4, but you'll have to get updated to 10.4.11 first.
Here's the download link for iTunes 9:

Let's test your internet connection. Perhaps your download is being interrupted along the way and you don't quite have the entire update.
