NAS Drive as default

I have iTunes  on a windows PC, but added my music to a Nas drive that is visible by the iTunes program.
how can I remove the local instance of just the music content, ensure that any uploaded music goes direct to the Nas location?
if I want to sync my music to my iPhone, how can I ensure that the sync location for music is also from the Nas drive.
thanks in advance

Thanks for the response, I have carried out the above.
when reloading iTunes, my music folder still has two entires, this computer, nothing in it and my nas.
when I connect an iPod, if I goto sync, the iPod device with my library, it still wants to sync music from my local pc, ie no music To the iPod.
any ideas?

  • I have transfered my library my library to a NAS drive. How do I stop Itunes from creating the default folder on the local drive?

I've transferred my Itunes Media Library to a NAS drive, and pointed Itunes (using the advanced preferences tab) to the relevant folder on the NAS drive. I have done this to free up disk space on a computer I primarily use for work but which I use both at home and at work. The NAS drive is at home. (To clarify, I am not expecting Itunes to function at work, only at home when access to the NAS drive is available).
Under certain circumstances Itunes will start-up at work and when it does it will create the folder structure for the Itunes Media Library in the default location (on the local drive) instead of looking for the location I have specified (the NAS drive) which it should not be able to find when I am at work and telling me that it can't find it (which would be fine).
How do I stop Itunes from recreating the default folder structure and defaulting the file path to the standard media library location on my local drive? Every time this happens I have to re-point Itunes to the NAS drive location, which often requires me to reconsolicate libraries which is tedious and time consuming. It seems that in the process of one of these consolidations I have lost some of the media files. They are still in the library (ie. visible in the Itunes window) but Itunes can't find the media associated with that file - identifying them with an excamation mark "!".
Any help with this would be appreciated, as I have read several forums and threads, and despite trying several different approaches I have been unable to address the problem, which appears to be exacerbated by the laptop being remote from the NAS drive.

Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them? I'm thinking that if the library file is only available at home then the ITunes library won't get corrupted at work when it can't find the media, in the event that I accidentally start up itunes eg. while opening an attachment or disc that can be read by Itunes.
iTunes will start up and you will have an empty library.
Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them?
    Yes.
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the /Music/iTunes/ folder on the NAS.
Move the /iTunes media/ folder currently on the NAS into  the /iTunes/ folder you just copied to the NAS.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the NAS.
You can delete /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal drive.
If you launch iTunes while NOT comnnected to the NAS, iTunes will recreate the /Music/iTunes/ folder and you will have an empty library.
WHen you are again connected to the NAS, just do step 4 above.
Do you know what the advantages and disadvantages are of having the database files like the ".itl" files stored locally versus on the NAS?
Keeping everyhing together inside the iTunes folder makes it "cleaner" and simpler to manage everything.

  • Sharing a NAS drive between 2 PCs running itunes with different accounts....

I have 2 Windows 7 PC's with different iTunes accounts, both accessing the same NAS drive for their save location.
    2 Questions:
    - 1 - How do I stop them from reverting back their default save loaction ( from "z:/itunes/itunesmedia" to "c:/user/music/itunes/itunesmedia" ) ??
    - 2 - when one account buys music and save it to the NAS location, will the other itunes account be able to see it straight away, and if not, how do i make it so it does??
    Any help is good help
    Thanks

    All itunes is running 10.something....
All Pc's autherised to play the other accounts music etc......

You can manually add the music files on the external drive to your powerbook's itunes by using File->Add to library but that won't bring over playlists, ratings or playcounts.
This "metadata" is in a file called "iTunes Library" on your desktop in Music/iTunes. To bring over that "metadata" you can try this:
    1) Close iTunes on both machines.
    2) Copy the "iTunes Library" from the desktop and put in in the same place on the powerbook.
    3) Now open iTunes on the powerbook.
This will definitely work if the external drive is attached directly to the powerbook. I haven't tried your type of scenario, where you will access the external drive through the network to get to the desktop and then the external drive. But I think I've seen other here say this works.
If it doesn't work, ie it put exclamation marks next to tracks to indicate it can't find htem, then go into the preferences (Advanced, general) and set the music folder location to the external drive (through the network, through the desktop). This should make it find the music.
You'll also want to make sure "Copy files to the music folder" is ON so that any music you add through the powerbook is copied to the external drive. (If that's what you want. You may chose not to do this, to have some music stay on the local harddrive so you have acess to it when you're not at home).

  • Issue with 10.9.2 looking NAS drive away from home network

I have a NAS drive on my home network. When I am away from my home network my MBP running 10.9.2 keeps looking for and not find ing the drive. It keeps interupting my work flow every few minutes. How do I resolve this issue? it is very annoying.

As a temporary workaround, of course, you can just turn Time Machine OFF.
There was a similar message, with reference to type "file" in the URL, but this one is differnent.
Have you ever used a 3rd-party utility, or followed any instructions to edit some files, to change Time Machine's default behavior?

  • WDMyCloud NAS drive not visible

    Hi,
on new Win8.1 pro PC, my NAS drive, WDMyCloud, is not visible in Network as a computer. It is visible under Media Devices and under Storage section though. So I can play media from it and access the management console but not access/transfer files and map
a drive to it. The WDMyCloud drive is accessible via my Android smart phone. Also my Windows 8.1 laptop can see it as computer (though sometimes takes a while now - until I connected the new PC all was working fine). The drive is connected to WiFi
router by ethernet cable and I can ping it from all devices. Please help me map the drive.

    Hi Fangzhou,
disabling the firewall had no effect. The link you provided did not provide a solution either. I don't use Norton antivirus, just the default Windows Defender. The fact that "unspecified error" mostly means "access denied" is interesting
though. I therefore investigated further and found 2 errors in the system event log which might point to the cause. The pc17 is the computer where I am having the problem, pc8 is another computer on my network. They seem to be having some kind
of dispute though lol. Not being able to join WORKGROUP and the NAS, as the settings indicate, would have made itself part of WORKGROUP, this may well prevent the NAS being visible and cause the "unspecified error". If this is the
cause then not really sure how to make these two combatants be nice to each other :-D.

  • TWO Itunes accounts Running out of space on each laptop. Moving one accont fully to NEW machine wit 3tb drive NAS. Can i move second mdeia libary to nas drive ?? Ie tow itunes libraries on NAS drive working independantly

Two I-Tunes libaries (Mine & My Wifes) Both Machines running out of space.
My FIX Moving All itunes account Libary etc to new PC with NAS 2tb drive (IOMEGA)or Seagate or LaCie or etc......
Can i copy the Bulky Library files ITUNEs from My Wifes laptop to the NAS drive ?
Is this easy to do ?
ALSO She will still have itunes on her laptop just none of the Bulky Library !
As the ITUNES program will be Pointed to her files (Library on NAS drive ) ?
If someone has done a walkthrough of something like this id really appreciate it?
LASTLY I did hear with itunes new Updates that it stops NAS Drives Streaming Media ? (SO is a NAS drive No use if apple are no allwing the streaming for itunes Server)

By default, the ITL is always on the C: drive.
SO it seems you moved yours to the exHD. Just moving it doesn't do anything, though...did you ever do a shift-start of itunes and use it as your library?
Pressing AND HOLDING the shift key until you get a prompt from ituens to choose a library ITL file.
I would do that now before you go any further, to make sure of which library files you want to use.
I would assume the one with the most recent date is the one you want.
iTunes uses the last library opened. You don't always have to do a shift-start, in other words.
However if at any point you start itunes without the exHD connected, it automatically goes back to the C: drive.
In that case, you WOULD need to do another shift-start to use the ITL on the exHD>
    It's option-start on a Mac, BTW.
You can move the whole folder over to your new MBP and do an option-start.

  • WD My Book NAS drive, Cisco VPN router and FTP access

    Hello:
I have a Western Digital My Book World Editon II NAS drive that is connected through a Cisco ASA 5500 VPN router.
This NAS drive has a service to use it as an FTP server using port 21 as default or other specific port.
I also have a XP PC in which I installed Filezilla where I am trying to access the NAS files.
Only problem is that Filezilla apparently connects to the NAS drive but it lists the directory as empty.Changing to Active mode makes no difference.
Does this sounds like a problem with the VPN configuration?
Do I have to configure some kind of port forwarding on the VPN router for port 21?
Or does the VPN router has nothing to do with this problem?
    Thanks for your help

Would you "Solve" this question please ?

  • CS3, mac, now opens my NAS drive upon startup of DW

Just wiped my macbook clean, and did a brand new fresh
install of OSX, and my new CS3 Design Premium. Now, when I open
Dreamweaver, my NAS drive mounts ever time. Makes no sense. Why
    would this be?

answered it myself. I went to PReferences, Preview in Browser
tab...I deleted the 3 default browsers. Quit, restarted, and the
NAS drive did not mount. Weird.

  • Front Row problems with NAS drive (2 of them)

OK... having 2 problems with Front Row...
    Background
First, I should say I'm new to Mac OS X, had early Macs, but went PC a long time ago.
I burned all of my music from CDs (I own) on my WinXP box, then copied them over to a NAS drive for easy access between computers.
The NAS is an Infrant ReadyNAS. The drive is shared on my network. The keychain app has the password information to the share. Though I should note, it doesn't matter if I remove the password from the share.
The ReadyNAS has a nice feature whereas it will act as an iTunes server, this is enabled. I do not have AFP or NFS enabled on the NAS since I regularly access the drive on WinXP machines. All access is SMB/CIFS.
I mounted the drive and created a link between the iTunes home folder and the network share. Thus, iTunes automatically mounts the share when started and seems to be comfortable that the files are accessible.
    Everything works fine in iTunes.
    Not so in Front Row.
    Problem #1
Front Row will not read the "Shared Music." When I go this route in Front Row, it finds the NAS iTunes Music Server, but insists on being given a password to access the "Share." Of course, you can't enter a password.
Again, everything works just fine in iTunes. It shows the server fine under "Shared," and immediately brings up all music and plays it readily.
Just doesn't work in Front Row.
    Problem #2
Front Row stopped auto-mounting the NAS share which is linked to the iTunes music folder. iTunes will mount it, if it is not mounted already when it first is asked to play a song. Up until this morning, Front Row would automount it too. This AM, after getting the Apple security update, Front Row would not automount the share. Note, if I automount the share manually, or go to iTunes (which properly automounts) before launching Front Row everything works fine from Front Row.
It took me a second to figure this out, as Front Row's terribly missleading error message is, you are not authorized to play this song - authorize it (well, that is the point of the wordy message). Of course, this confused me, since these are not iTunes store songs and of course, this worked fine yesterday.
Anyway, what is really happening, (I surmise) is it is not automounting the share and cannot read the song, and seemingly defaulted to the assumption it is a DRM problem.
I have to say, this is one out of the old Microsoft handbook. Missleading error messages and broken functionality from (it would seem) rushed out security updates.
I'm gonna have to tip my hat... some of those Microsoft developers that made the move from Redmond to Cupertino brought their game with them!
    LOL
Anyway... anyone that can offer a hand would make my wife very happy. She likes Front Row... and now she has to start iTunes to make Front Row work. Sheesh.
Thanks in advance for the help.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Nah

    Hi,
same thing here: I have 3 LCD-screens (30,26,20 Apple Displays) on two graphic-cards (ATI X1900XT, NVDIA7300GT). Front Row does not display any pictures or movies. Menus work like they should, Music also plays fine, but images are not shown. It only shows a white screen on the main screen (30") and the other two are dimmed to black. If i type ESC i get back to the menus...
    Any hint? Regards - Peter

  • ITunes can't sync with iPhoto Library on NAS-Drive

As I have a lot of pictures and want to have them in a save place (RAID) i transfered the iPhoto Library to my NAS-Drive and told iPhoto to use the new location.
iPhoto works great with this setting - but when I try to sync my iPod Touch or iPhone with the Photo-Lib all I get is an empty Library. I don't want to sync with a disk-folder, but the iPhoto-Library to use the "Sync folder"-Option!
When i set the "Sync Pictures with..."-Feature at the Photos-Tab to "iPhoto" it shows an empty library ("no photos"). When I create a new (second) iPhoto-Lib at the default location (inside user folder) it works fine.
Why doesn't use iTunes the CURRENT LOCATION of the Photo-Library instead of using some STUPID DEFAULT PATH?! Who writes Software like this?! And the most important question: HOW CAN I PATCH THAT?!
An Alias of the iPhoto Library in the default-location doesn't work - so what's next?!
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Greetings from Germany
    Thomas
PS: Spelling of locations, menues and so on are roughly translated from my german os version...

It is not of any help but have exactly the same issue. Called one of our local radio Tech Shows (The Tech Guy, with Leo Leporte) and for what it is worth his only answer was that it was a bug. He noted that apparently i-Tunes was not looking at i-Photo for the library location but rather, as you have noted, only looks in the default location.
Be interested if you get this solved or come up with another work around that does not require my library to be in the default directory.
As you noted i-Photo is happy it is just the sync with i-Tunes, it just doesn't work,

  • Best way to move iTunes library from network drive to NAS drive?

    Hi all,
I need to move my iTunes library which currently lives on a Buffalo network drive to a new Synology NAS drive.
What is the best way to move the library?
    Thanks,
    Ed

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Going on as administrator on a NAS drive - HELP!!!

I recently bought my first ever iMac and think it is the best thing in the world (my wife is naturally first place).
I came over from a PC and was advised to get an external drive to help transfer everything. I ended up buying a Western Digital Mybookworld NAS drive. It all installed fine and all the info from the PC has transferred over fine. The problem is, I have tried going back onto the NAS as an administrator (as I want to partition the drive). I did this once before when I originally set it up on my mac, but now it doesn't recognise my username or password? I can still access the NAS as a guest but that is all.
I rang technical support at Western Digital and they say it is likely to be some of the settings on the mac. Can anyone throw some ideas at me as I am still learning about the mac and am probably missing something really obvious?
    Hope someone can help!

I can't imagine what setting on the Mac would affect administrator access on the MyBook, though perhaps I also am missing something obvious. If you can't connect to the MyBook's Network Storage Manager via your web browser, see this tech article on WD's site and see if that helps. If not, you may need to reset the administrator name and password on the MyBook back to the default. You can find instructions here.
    Hope this helps.

  • TM Alternative allowing NAS Drive Backup

I have a Buffallo T-byte NAS drive and would like to use it for backups. TM does not backup to NAS drives.
Is there an alternative to TM that allows backups to NAS drive, preferably one that does disk imaging?

This article describes how to get TM work with NAS units (ReadyNAS) - I am currently running this configuration and it works like a charm on wireless. Highly recommended - you just have to modify parts of it for other makes of NAS but on the Mac side you should be fine.
Follow the instructions carefully - it's easy to get ahead of yourself.

Making Time Machine work with the ReadyNAS
    April 20, 2008 by yoh-dah
The following is a summary of how to make Time Machine work with the ReadyNAS by DavidB based on initial contribution by btaroli and refinements by sirozha and a host of others on the ReadyNAS Mac/OSX Forum. We are thankful of the Mac enthusiasts who frequent and contribute to the ReadyNAS forum.
Ok I’ve just converted a second machine to use the NAS for networked Time Machine backups, and this time things went straight through without any mistakes. Here’s the run-down:
This example was done using a Mac Mini with a hostname of “magpie”, running OS X 10.5.2 and connected via 802.11g to a ReadyNAS NV+ (RAIDiator 4.01c1-p1 [1.00a041] with AFP patch loaded). I’ve created separate AFP shares for each machine (”TMmagpie” in this case) and set them to be accessible just to the “owner” of the machine. I could have set up one share to contain Time Machine backups for all clients, but then it could be possible for a user to access someone else’s private data within the backups.
Do make sure to keep the hostname simple — i.e. don’t have quotes in it like “Maggie’s Mac”, or the process will fail.
With the share set up on the NAS already, everything else we do is local to the client (magpie in this case). Some of the commands I list here are run within Terminal.app, although there are alternate (GUI) ways of accessing some of the functions.
This machine had previously been doing Time Machine backups to a local Firewire disk, and part of the process outlined here is to copy the contents of that disk to the NAS so that further backups build on top of the existing ones. No need to throw away the old backups!
    1. In System Preferences, turn Time Machine off.
    2. Find the MAC address of the machine’s internal Ethernet port:
    $ ifconfig en0 | grep ether
This should produce a single line of output, such as:
    ether 00:16:cb:af:91:d7
Even if the network backups will be done using a different port (e.g. AirPort: usually “en1″) the system will use the address of en0 as part of the system identifier.
In this case the identifier that Time Machine will use is “magpie_0016cbaf91d7″.
    3. Make a new “sparsebundle” on a local disk (NOT the Time Machine disk!). This sparsebundle is a virtual filesystem image which we’ll copy to the NAS, and Time Machine will then access it remotely (that way Time Machine’s not limited by the filesystem features of whatever NAS it’s using: all the funky stuff happens within the sparsebundle). By default sparsebundles can keep growing until they fill up the NAS, but in this scenario we keep other things on the NAS as well as backups, and we’re going to limit the sparsebundle size to 140 GB. We called this one “Backup of magpie” as that’s the default name created by Time Machine, but in fact you can call the volume anything you like.
$ hdiutil create -size 140g -fs HFS+J -volname "Backup of magpie" magpie_0016cbaf91d7.sparsebundle
    created: /Users/david/magpie_0016cbaf91d7.sparsebundle $
This Mac Mini hasn’t had things like developer tools loaded: hdiutil comes with the OS. We make the sparsebundle manually so we can impose the size limit, and we do it on a local disk because of a bug that prevents creation of a sparsebundle remotely on the NAS (although they can be used when in place). The sparsebundle doesn’t start at 140 GB: it grows as more data is put in the filesystem inside it, up to a maximum of 140 GB.
    4. If you’re not going to copy the contents of an existing Time Machine disk, skip ahead to step 9.
    5. Mount the sparsebundle:
    $ open magpie_0016cbaf91d7.sparsebundle
You’ll see “Backup of magpie” appear as a mounted volume in Finder.
    6. Copy the old Time Machine backups to the sparsebundle. In Disk Utility:
Click on Time Machine disk on the left panel, then select the “Restore” tab:
    1. Drag the local Time Machine volume to the Source field
    2. Drag the sparsebundle volume (”Backup of magpie”) to the Destination field
    3. Select “Erase destination” (possibly not mandatory)
    4. Restore
This will take a while, depending on how much data is on the drive…
    7. If you selected “Erase destination” in Disk Utility, the volume name will have been copied from the local Time Machine disk. Rename the new volume back to “Backup of magpie” (or whatever name you chose).
    8. Unmount (”eject”) the sparsebundle volume.
    9. Mount the NAS share the sparsebundle will be mounted on (”TMmagpie” in this case). I mount all our shares via AFP, but you can presumably use CIFS also. Once it’s mounted, it will be accessible within Terminal.app as /Volumes/TMmagpie.
    10. Copy the sparsebundle to the share:
    $ rsync -avE /Users/david/magpie_0016cbaf91d7.sparsebundle /Volumes/TMmagpie/.
Depending on your network (802.11g, 802.11n, 100bT, 1000bT, etc) this can take a long time!
rsync is smart enough to only copy the new bits of a file, so you can stop and re-run that command if necessary without re-copying everything.
In the meantime you can go ahead and use the machine. Just don’t turn Time Machine backups back on yet.
    11. If the local copy of the sparsebundle is in an area that will be backed up by Time Machine, remove it before proceeding. We don’t want to double the size of the Time Machine backup for no good reason!
    12. In the Time Machine System Preferences panel, select “Change Disk…”. It will display a list of volumes you can backup to. If the share containing the sparsebundle isn’t listed (you did mount it, right?) it’s probably because it’s not mounted from a Time Capsule or another OS X machine. To show the share in this display you’ll need to have executed the following command in Terminal:
    $ defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
You’ll need to log out and in again for this to have effect (select “Log Out” from the Apple menu: you can Restart, but logging out will do). Now mount TMmagie again, then try Time Machine’s “Change Disk…” again.
    13. Select the share on the NAS (”TMmagpie”) as the new destination for Time Machine backups.
Time Machine will automatically turn itself back on and schedule a backup to begin in two minutes. If you didn’t populate the sparsebundle with the contents of a local disk, this first backup will be a full backup and can take a very long time (depending on things like your network infrastructure). If you did pre-populate the sparsebundle, this backup will be an incremental backup and shouldn’t take long at all (depending on how much has changed on the machine since you turned Time Machine off in Step 1 of course).
Once the backup has started, keep going with the remaining steps in this list while the backup is running.
    14. You can now eject the TMmagpie share. Time Machine will automatically mount the sparsebundle file directly (during backups you’ll see “Backup of magpie” mounted).
    15. Unfortunately Spotlight will try to index the contents on the “Backup of magpie” share, which will slow down the backups significantly. To avoid this, as soon as the share is mounted for the first time go to Spotlight’s Privacy panel in System Preferences. Use the ‘+’ button at the bottom, select the “Backup of magpie” share, and Spotlight will then ignore it. If Spotlight has already started indexing it, it should immediately stop and the backup will speed up.
That’s it. Congratulations! New Time Machine backups should happen every hour, and you can access all the backup files via the usual Time Machine interface. With magpie this has allowed us to disconnect the local 200G Firewire disk previously used for Time Machine backups: this drive was significantly noisier than the Mac Mini itself!
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Ripping tracks from a CD do not show up on my NAS drive

I have an IOMEGA IX200 1TB NAS for backup and an IOMEGA 1TB Media Player that I have transferred my Itunes library to for storage and playing music. I have checked the setting to move all imported songs to the Itunes library located on my IOMEGA Media player that is attached to my home network. Purchased songs from Itunes store will be inserted into the NAS Media drive, but I rip songs from a CD, they will not be placed there, I can't find them anyplace. My IOMEGA IX200 NAS drive that i use for backups is lasted as 'shared' on my Itunes window, but
my IOMEGA Media NAS drive is not. Should the Media player be listed as shared?
Why do Itunes bought songs get placed in the proper place but not CD ripped songs? Has anyone else had success transferring all the Itunes music to an external storage drive on their home network?

Can you see the CD ripped songs in iTunes itself? Can you then right-click and select "Show in Windows Explorer"?

  • Purchased TV and Movie artwork not showing in iTunes 10.6.1 when stored on a NAS drive

    Hi All
Having searched through the forums here and using Google to cast a wider net.
I am still struggling to see if there is a solution to the missing artwork of TV programmes or films missing when stored on a NAS drive.  All the TV programmes and movies have been purchased through the iTunes store.
The version of iTunes being used is the most recent (10.6.1).
The network drive is hardwired linked to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, this base station is also hardwire linked to the iMac.  The iTunes library resides upon a DROBO FS and has done since it filled the storage capabilities of the iMac.
TV and Films purchased before the migration of the library has the artwork, it is just films and programmes purchased since the migration that don't.
Clicking "Get Album Artwork" has no effect, the same is also true for manually adding the artwork to each episode through the "Get Info" "Artwork" option.  Although the "Get Info" route teases you with an apparent result only to have the artwork "vanish" when you save.
I have seen a solution that involves remapping the iTunes library to the iMac each time you want to download a TV programme or film and then remounting the NAS drive and consolidating the library again, http://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/fix-missing-album-art-when-using-a-nas- with-itunes/
This doesn't strike me as much of a solution and doesn't address the TV programmes and films that have already been downloaded.
I am hoping someone in the community is aware of a solution or at least method that is a little more elegant than the one linked to above.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

The Apple TV 1 doesn't use homesharing.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.
