Near-Empty Menubar

I just uprgaded my 400 mhz G3 B&W Powermac from Jaguar to Tiger. All the subsequent online upgrades are in place.
No matter what I do, my menubar won't change. I click in the Time/Date control panel, tell it I want the date & time displayed in the menubar. Click out, go back, and it's deselected again, and no date/time in the menubar. I tell it I want the volume control in the menubar. Same thing. I tell it I want fast user switching in the menubar. Well, you get the idea.
How do I convince the system to keep the settings I'm telling it to use? I've never run into this sort of problem before. (Obviously, else I wouldn't have to ask)
Any ideas? Thanks

Brett
No matter what I do, my menubar won't change. Is the menubar (right side) completely empty, or is it that it is missing a few things?
If the latter, you probably have a corrupt preference file, specifically 'systemuiserver.plist'. But there are potentially two of them, so ...
In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
In "/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost", delete com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
Then log out and back in again. You may need to go to System Preferences to put back the menu items you need to display.
If you have nothing there at all, it may still be worth doing the above. But post back and let us know.

    Hallo!
I am using Crystal Reports 8.5.
I have created a report with a subreport.
My problem: When I print the report, there is always a large empty space after the subreport entries?
    Can anybody help me?

Originally the stored procedure had the last parameter as an integer.  I tried everything with the formulas, CDBL(1.00)  ToNumber(1.00)  1.00  1  hoping it just wasn't recognizing that the value needed to be a number but nothing worked.  I changed the stored procedure to require a VARCHAR for the last parameter, updated the report and it worked for me.

  • My ~/Documents folder is nearly empty! Gah!!

I was working remotely from my MacBook on a file that was on my iMac. My MacBook started complaining about disk space being full (which isn't true) and started beachballing for about 10 mins, so I forced a reboot. When it finally booted back up, I looked at my iMac's documents folder and there's only one subfolder in it (there's usually a ton of other stuff there). I didn't see anything in either MB or iMac Trash.
I have a backup but it's a few weeks old and have a few homework assignments I'd like to get if possible.
I shut my iMac down remotely in case there's a chance of recovery. Should I try Target Disk Mode when I get home? Or something else?
    Help!
EDIT: I just realized this might not be in the right topic. Mods, please move as necessary.

Whew. Disaster averted. I got home and booted into Target Disk mode and found that my Documents folder had been moved.
    That was a close one.

  • Two month old rMBP 13- battery drops from near full to near empty

    Hi All,
I have a rMBP 13 I bought brand new in December. Last night I closed my computer with ~80% charge, and just opened it up today (about 18 hours later) and the battery was at 7%. This has happened a few times in the last few weeks. Anyone have any thoughts? My cylce count is only 55 and I generally take good care of the battery (usually run it down before charging it again).
    Thanks

  • N96 Memory near empty but system says its full

My Nokia N96 has been sent back for the third time from repair. It has had new software/firmware etc. but after I synchronised (600+ contacts and calendar) it it keeps warning C: memory is full. I have browsed the memory via the phone and PC Suite but can't find any files or folders there that are more than few kilobytes. Anyone out there with any ideas please?
    Thanks

Last shot is the full reset
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, hold the power button for a second to switch on the phone.
    4. Release when the phone shows the nokia hands logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen.
It may take a few attempts and very flexible fingers.
This will completly reset the phone
Anything clogging up the c drive should be removed
Try it then check the status when the phone recovers

  • C: drive full (149GB) D: drive nearly empty

    Hello
Not a computer specialist, so please be gentle. I can't find an answer to this on the forum that I can make sense of!
My Satellite Hard Drive is full!
    WIndows C: = 4.94 GB free of 149 GB
    Data D: = 138GB free of 148 GB
    So, some questions:
How do I free up space on the C Drive?
Can I move stuff onto the D: Drive (photos, music &c) and the Library still find it?
    As I say, I'm not a specialist!
    Thank you in advance!

You can copy the contents of your whole user folder (if it is not too big!) from C: to D: e.g. c:\users\fred\
Then if you right click on each of the libraries on C: (documents, music, videos etc) and select properties you can include the new folder location on D: and after remove the folder location for C:. Then when you click on the library it will take you to the files on D: instead of C:.
For 'downloads' you will need to change the browser options (e.g. in Internet Explorer, Chrome etc) to point to the new 'downloads' folder on D: so that it saves them there.
Same thing with iTunes and other applications you use.
You can change the location of almost everything including important things like 'desktop', 'favourites' and 'contacts'.
If you restore your C: drive you won't lose anything. You will just have to add the locations to the libraries to point to the files in D: again. 5 mins work instead of hours restoring backups of your files!

  • ESTK CC target application menu is nearly empty

I just got upgraded to CC and once I managed to get ESTK installed, everything looked good.  Now a couple of launches later, and ESTK only sees itself as an available target.  I can see aftereffects12 in the data browser, but I can't target it, either through the menu, or with #target. I'm probably going to try a reinstall, but has this come up for anyone else?

    Hi Uwe,
It's not really slow reacting, it's really freezing for 2-3 seconds and then continues normal. Any button inputs that I do during the freeze are buffered and will be entered after the freeze. This being said, the OS could well be the problem in which case I'm kinda screwed cause I can't go back. Not now anyway.
On the other hand, if it's really the OS many more people would have complaint by now as it's very annoying. But I can't find much of anything about this issue.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Ah ok, I had no idea you could have a filesystem smaller than its partition.  I'll go with #1, I only have one user and don't really want to have separate partitions for the root and /home.  resize2fs is chugging away happily.  Thanks!

  • Can't empty trash in iPhoto 9.1.1

At some point, probably since upgrading to iPhoto 9 ('11), I stopped being able to empty the iPhoto trash.
When I bring up the trash album, it shows the number of items in the trash (currently up to 2300), but there are no photos listed. Clicking Empty Trash from any of three places - inside the trash folder, by right-clicking on Trash, or under the "iPhoto" menu - all do nothing except generate a system beep.
Deleting new photos makes the number of items in the Trash increase, but it seems like iPhoto thinks there's nothing in the Trash.
I tried to figure out where iPhoto stores Trash info. The best I could find was /iPhoto Library/Database/Albums/trashAlbum.apalbum which is modified regularly, but that's a nearly empty file (only 4KB, whereas most other "albums" are larger).
I've tried all the different recovery options (Repair library, repair permissions, recover orphaned photos, etc) 3 or 4 times each, but no change.
Rebuilding my library from scratch isn't an option. I can't lose 7 years' worth of comments and things.
    Any ideas??

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Findings on replacing (empty?) OfficeJet 8600 N911g ink cartridges

I want to note some interesting findings on replacing the "Setup cartridges."
The printer reported that the black ink was out and needed replacing.  It really did not report the CMY cartridges as out, although they were low.  Curiously though, the printer still continued printing anyway, even though the text was black.
When  I replaced it with the full K cartridge, suddenly the C and Y cartridges were empty!!  The M cartridge gave a level showing about an 1/8th.
So I removed the full K cartridge and put back in the (nearly emplty?) "setup type" K cartridge:  there was still a bit of a K level reading, but now all the C,M, and Y cartridges were empty!!!  What was going on?  Nothing in the M cartridge was used, and suddenly it was empty?
Ok, ok.  I accept the high probability that when one cartridge gets to empty, all the others probably get close to empty too.  I am not going to be suspicious like a great many people that the printer has the ability to sense one cartridge change (from empty to full), and so is on the alert to have the user also change the rest of the cartridges, no matter what the level of ink is.  It's probably the case all the cartridges should be switched out.
These experiments however indicate that the ink level sensing technology has a quality worse than the ability of the first Kia or Hyundai models to sense fuel levels in the tank.  How long have you been at the forefront of inkjet technology, HP??  Decades now?  And you're telling me that a magenta cartridge that was not sensed as empty  has the K cartridges switched from new (full) to old (nearly empty) back to new (full) again, and now all the color cartridges are sensed as empty??
I am glad I am not a suspicious person, HP, or I might be inclined to believe something funny is going on.
There is some other (unofficial?) HP support forum, and I read tens of messages of OJ8600(N911g) owners saying it was going to be their last HP product.  I hope I misunderstood them.  After all, I am not a suspicious guy.

There is a priming process when a new cartridge is installed to remove air from the printhead.  It primes all the colors and black whenever a cartridge is changed.  If a cartridge is near empty and a different cartridge is replaced the priming may cause that cartridge to now be reported as low.
I would suggest running the printer until it refuses to print as a cartridge actually becomes empty, then replace all the cartridges at once that are at low levels.
The initial low on ink indicator is set before the cartridges actually run out of ink to give you time to purchase a replacement. You do not need to replace the cartrdiges until they are actually depleted.

  • Officejet 6600 New Ink Cartridge Shows Empty

I bought brand new color ink cartridges from Bestbuy for my Officeject 6600.  I printed one color page.  After a week when i tried to print in color, it is telling me the color cartridges are empty or near empty! Can you believe it -- only after one page printed. This looks like a scam by HP to me. Please tell me that it is not.  That HP does not sell color ink cartridges that you are obligated to use EVERY DAY or else it fails after one print.  It makes me never want to buy an HP product again. Hope there is an explanation.  Please help!

Hey ,  Welcome to the HP Support Forum.  I understand you're concerned about the page yield in the colour cartridges of your HP Officejet 6600 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you with this.   For your information, depending on whether you were using regular or XL sized colour cartridges, you can yield approximately 330 to 825 pages per colour cartridge.  One colour print job, barring manufacturing defects in the cartridge, is not enough to drain a full set.  Click here for more information on the limited warranty on HP ink supplies.  Have you been printing a lot of text only (black ink) print jobs?  If yes, as you will see here and here coloured ink is often used in black only print jobs, unless you've configured your printer settings in Windows or Mac to be otherwise. In the HP Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers article that I've linked above, you can learn how and when ink is used by your printer in print jobs and other features.  Further to that, some ink (including coloured ink) is used to service the print head and to prevent clogging.       If after reviewing the information I've provided, your printer settings on PC or Mac you're still feeling something's amiss, I recommend you reach out to our tech support team.  You can click on the following link to initiate a case: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Once you fill out the online form to create your case you can choose from different direct contact methods.  On my end I cannot exchange or provide compensation for faulty cartriges, but this is something you can bring to the technical support team's attention.  I hope this helps.  Regards,

  • Ink status pop-up indicators stopped appearing

HP 7525 was purchased new and installed Jaunuary 2015.  It is connected to a Dell 8300 Desk Top running Windows 7, Service Pk #1, Home Premium, 64-bit.  The printer connection is hardwired via a USB connection.  On initial install all features of interest worked fine; greeting card and photo printing primarily.   In the beginning when using these apps, Hallmark Card Studio Deluxe 2015 and Photoshop cc 2014 on starting the printing process a small icon popped up in the lower right corner of the screen advising ink status.  In addition, when a cartridge was near empty a window popped up to warn that a cartridge was low or empty.  The pop-up windows stopped about the end of February 2015 and have not returned.   The out-of-ink warning windows have never appeared yet.
The starter ink cartridges have emptied, reasonably so with no such warnings.  The printer and computer ink status screens showed the ink levels were ok even when they appeared to be empty.   Replacing the ink cartridges solved the immediate problem but I am now "flying blind."  From past experience with an earlier Photosmart Inkjet a copule of years ago, I believe there is a software issue involved that needs resolving.   Can anybody advise on what troubleshooting actions are necessary with the new 7525?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    BobF2012

    Hi @BobF2012,
The options in the Printer Assistance, "Only show ink alerts when printing" and I "Show me ink alerts right away", dictate how you see your alerts. When you selected Show me ink alerts right away, you chose to get a prompt as soon as the ink level reaches the first warning level. You will be warned when the cartridge(s) has only 20% ink left, then again at 10%, then when depleted, or some variation of these ink levels. If you choose Only show ink alerts when printing, I believe the ink levels will appear every time you print.
Perhaps you would rather go back to the Printer Assistant and choose Only show ink alerts when printing instead.

  • How can I backup data from a case-sensitive volume to a NON-case-sensitive volume?

The case-sensitive volume in this instance being a desktop-mounted disk image volume.
A tragi-comedy in too many acts and hours
    Dramatis Personae:
Macintosh HD: 27" iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (iMac10,1), 12 GB RAM, 1 TB SATA internal drive
TB1: 1 TB USB external drive
TB2: 2 TB USB to Serial-ATA bridge external drive
Terabyte: a .dmg disk image and resulting desktop volume of the same name (sorry, I don't know the technical term for a .dmg that's been opened, de-compressed and mounted -- evanescently -- on the desktop)
    Drive Genius 3 v3.1 (3100.39.63)/64-bit
Apple Disk Utility Version 11.5.2 (298.4)
Sunday morning (05/08/11), disk utility Drive Genius 3's drive monitoring system, Drive Pulse, reported a single bad block on an external USB2.0 1TB drive, telling me all data would be lost and my head would explode if I didn't fix this immediately. So I figured I'd offload the roughly 300 GB of data from TB1 to TB2 (which was nearly empty), with the intention of reinitializing TB 1 to remap the bad block and then move all its data BACK from TB 2. When I opened TB1's window in the Finder and tried to do a straight "Select All" and drag all items from TB1 to TB2, I got this error message:
"The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."
The error message didn't tell me WHICH volume had "the wrong case sensitivity for a backup," and believe me, or believe me not, this was the first time I'd ever heard that there WAS such a thing as "case sensitivity" for a drive. I tried dragging and dropping some individual folders -- some of them quite large, in the 40GB range -- from TB1 to TB2 without any problem whatsoever, but the majority of the items were the usual few-hundred-MB stuff that seems to proliferate on drives like empty Dunkin' Donuts coffee cups on the floor of my car, and I didn't relish the idea of spending an afternoon dragging and dropping dribs and drabs of 300GB worth of stuff from one drive to another.
Being essentially a simple-minded soul, I had what I thought was the bright idea that I could get around the problem by making a .dmg disk image file of the whole drive, stashing it on TB2, repairing and re-initializing TB1, and then decompressing the disk image I'd made of TB1, and doing the "drag and drop" of all the files in resulting desktop volume to TB1. So I made the .dmg of TB1, called "Terabyte," stashed that .dmg on TB2 (no error messages this time), re-initialized and then rebooted the iMac from my original Snow Leopard 10.6.1 disks and used Disk Utility to erase and initialize TB1 -- making sure that it was NOT initialized as case-sensitive, and installed a minimal system on TB1 from the same boot. Then I updated that 10.6.1 system to 10.6.7 with System Update, and checked to see that Disk Utility reported all THREE drives -- internal, 1TB, and 2TB -- as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and no "case sensitive" BS. I also used Drive Genius 3's "information" function for more detailed info on all three drives. Except for the usual differing mount points, connection methods, and S.M.A.R.T. status (only the Macintosh HD internal, SATA 1TB drive supports S.M.A.R.T.), everything seemed to be oojah-***-spiff, all three drives showing the same Partition Map Types: GPT (GUID Partition Table.) Smooth sailing from here on out, I thought.
    Bzzzzt! Wrong!
When I opened the Terabyte .dmg and its desktop volume mounted, I tried the old lazy man's "Select All" and drag all items from the desktop-mounted drive "Terabyte" to TB1, I got the error message:
"The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."
I then spent the next three hours on the phone with AppleCare (kids -- when you buy a Mac ANYTHING, cough up the money for AppleCare. Period.), finally reaching a very pleasant senior tech something-or-other in beautiful, rainy Portland, OR. Together we went through everything I had done, tried a few suggestions she offerred, and, at the end of three hours, BOTH of us were stumped. At least I didn't feel quite as abysmally stupid as I did at the beginning of the process, but that was all the joy I had gotten after two solid days of gnawing at this problem -- and I mean SOLID; I'm retired, and spend probably 12 hours a day, EVERY day, at the keyboard, working on various projects.
The AppleCare senior tech lady and I parted with mutual expressions of esteem, and I sat here, slowly grinding my teeth.
Then I tried something I don't know why I was so obtuse as to not have thought of before: I opened Apple's Disk Utility and checked the desktop-mounted volume Terabyte (Mount Point: /Volumes/Terabyte), the resulting volume from opening and uncompressing the .dmg "Terabyte".
Disk Utility reported: "Format : Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive)." Doh!
Obviously, TB1, the 1 TB USB external drive I'd actually bought as part of a bundle from MacMall when I bought my 27" iMac, and which I had initialized the first day I had the iMac up and running (late November 2009), had somehow gotten initialized as a Case-sensitive drive. How, I don't know, but I suspect the jerk behind the keyboard. Whatever the case, when I created the Terabyte disk image (the drive's original name: when I erased and re-initialized it -- see above -- I renamed it "1TB" for quick identification), the original drive's "Case-sensitive" format was encoded too. So when I tried to drag and drop EVERYTHING from the desktop-mounted volume "Terabyte" to the newly initialized and "blessed" (now THERE's a term from the past!), the system recognized it as an attempt as a total volume backup, and hit me with "The volume [the desktop-mounted volume "Terabyte" -- BB] has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup." And, of course, the reinitialized TB1 was now correctly formatted as NOT "case-sensitive."
Well, that solved the mystery (BTW, Disk Utility identified the unopened Terabyte.dmg as an "Apple UDIF read-only compressed {zlib}, which is why the .dmg file could be copied to ANY volume, case sensitive or not), but it didn't help me with my problem of having to manually move all that data from the desktop-mounted volume "Terabyte" to TB1. I tried to find a way to correct the problem at the .dmg AND opened-volume-from-.dmg level with every disk utility I had, to no avail.
Sorry for the long exposition, but others may trip over this "case-sensitive" rock in the road, and I wanted to make the case as clear as possible.
So my problem remains: other than coal shovel by coal shovel, is there any way to get all the data off this case-sensitive desktop-mounted volume "Terabyte" and onto TB1.
Not that I know whether it would made any difference or not, one of the things that got me into this situation was my inability to get "Time Machine" properly configured so it wasn't making new back-ups every (no lie) 15 minutes.
Philosophical bonus question: what's the need for this "case-sensitive," "NOT case-sensitive" option for disk initialization?
As always, thanks for any help.
    Bart Brown

"Am I to understand that you have a case-sensitive volume with data that you want to copy to a case-insensitive volume? And the Finder won't let you do it? If that's what the problem is, the reason should be obvious: on the source volume, you may have two files in the same folder whose names differ only in case. When copying that folder to the target volume, it's not clear what the Finder should do."
Yes, I understand all that... NOW.
What I had (have) is a USB external 1TB drive (henceforth known as "Terabyte") that I bought with my 27" iMac. I formatted, and put a minimal (to make it bootable) system on Terabyte the same day back in late November 2009 that I set up my 27" iMac. Somehow -- I don't know how -- Terabyte got initialized as "case-sensitive." I didn't even know at the time that there WAS such a thing as "case-sensitive" or "NOT case-sensitive" format.
Sunday morning (05/08/11), Drive Pulse, a toolbar-resident utility (that's Part of Drive Genius 3) that monitors internal and external drives for physical, problems, volume consistency problems, and volume fragmentation, reported a single bad block on the volume Terabyte, advising me that it would be best if I re-formatted Terabyte ASAP. I thought I could open Terabyte in a Finder window, Select All, and drag everything on the drive to ANOTHER USB external drive of 2 TB capacity (henceforth known as TB2). When I tried to do that, I got an error message:
"The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."
First I'd heard of "case sensitivity" -- I'm not too bright, as you seem to have realized.
Oddly enough (to me), I could move huge chunks of data, including a folder of 40GB, from Terabyte to TB2 with no problem.
Then the scenario unfolded per my too-convoluted message: several hours of trying things on my own, including making a .dmg of Terabyte (henceforth to be known as Terabyte.dmg) -- which left me with the exact same problem as described in the previous 4 paragraphs; and my 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare, who at least explained this case-sensitive business, but, after some shot-in-the-dark brainstorming -- tough to do with only one brain, and THAT on the OTHER end of the line --  the very pleasant AppleCare rep and I ended up equally perplexed and clueless as to how to get around the fact that a .dmg of a case-sensitive volume, while not case-sensitive in its "image" form (Terabyte.dmg), and thus able be transferred to TB1 or TB2 with no problems whatsoever, when opened -- either by double-clicking or opening in Disk Utility -- produced a desktop-mounted volume (henceforth known as the volume "Terabyte," the original name of the case-sensitive volume from which TB1.dmg had been made) that had the same case-sensitivity as the original from which it was made.
In the meantime, having gotten the data I needed to save off the physical USB "case-sensitive" volume Terabyte in the form of Terabyte.dmg, I erased and re-initialized the physical USB "case-sensitive" volume Terabyte, getting rif of the case sensitivity, and renaming it TB1. But it all left me back at square one, EXCEPT I had saved my data from the original "Terabyte" drive, and reformatted that drive to a NON- case-sensitive data now named TB1. The confusion here stems from the fact that problem case-sensitive drive, from which I made Terabyte.dmg, was originally named "Terabyte". When I re-initialized it as a NON case-sensitive drive, I renamed it TB1. I'm sorry about the confusing nomenclature, which I've tried to improve upon from my original message -- usual text-communication problem: the writer knows what he has in mind, but the reader can only go by what's written.
So, anyway, I still have the same problem, the desktop-mounted volume "Terabyte" still cannot be transferred in one whole chunk to either my internal drive, TB1, TB2, as the Finder interprets it as a volume backup (which it is), and reads the desktop-mounted volume "Terabyte" as case-sensitive, as the original volume -- from which the disk image Terabyte.dmg was made -- had been at the time I made it.
"As long as that situation doesn't arise, you should be able to make the copy with a tool that's less fastidious than the Finder, such as cp or rsync."
I'm afraid I have no idea what "cp or rsync" are. I'd be happy to be educated. That's why I came here.

  • Does not hibernate completely void the meaning of filevault?

    Hi,
A though about encryption and mac os sleep modes. In leopard under some
circumstances (depending on settings and so on) the contents of RAM is
written to /var/vm/sleepimage (pmset -g), either to save battery power
or to prevent loss of data when battery is about to run out when already suspended/sleeping.
I was under the impression that when using encrypted swap, this hibernation image would also be encrypted with the users password, but I made some tests and this seems not to be the case. After hibernate and restart, the memory is restored and the running programs restarted, disk images mounted etc, without any need for the user to give a password (independently of auto-login). So - it seems all what is needed to read the cleartext data is saved on disk (or RAM?)
I found some info on the web about the different sleep modes, and I though that could be the problem. It turned out I had sleep mode 5, which means means cleartext sleepimage (I verified this - my mails are there...), but with mode 3 or 1, the image is encrypted but apparently the encryption key/password is also stored?
I think most users don't realize this ... what good is filevault or other encrypted images if the application data and open user sessions (with mounted filesystems) are stored to disk together with the key?
Many users may not even know about the hibernate feature and are not given an option to disable it. Afaik the image is quietly written, automatically (at least) when battery is running out.
Please tell me I got it all wrong - this seems to bad to be true. If someone has some details on what keys are used for the encrypted swap and hibernate it would be very interesting. In linux the typical solution (I always did this myself) is to have random new keys generated at each boot for the swap file, and a user prompt for decrypting the hibernation file.
    cheers, Johan

    just some details; (man pmset)
0001 (bit 0) enables hibernation; causes OS X to write memory state to hibernation image at sleep time. On
wake (without bit 1 set) OS X will resume from the hibernation image. Bit 0 set (without bit 1 set) causes
OS X to write memory state and immediately hibernate at sleep time.
0010 (bit 1), in conjunction with bit 0, causes OS X to maintain system state in memory and leave system
power on until battery level drops below a near empty threshold (This enables quicker wakeup from memory
while battery power is available). Upon nearly emptying the battery, OS X shuts off all system power and
hibernates; on wake the system will resume from hibernation image, not from memory.
hibernatemode is set to 3 (binary 0011) by default on supported portables.
Ironically, hibernate is also called 'Safe sleep'
    mode 0 means off
    your settings:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement
Here's the apple doc on the subject - no hint that 0 should be used to be safe.
