Need a recommendation about java smart card and a reader

I've been posting some message in this forum and others and haven't gotten a clear response.
I want to experiment with java smart card technology.
From what I gathered, Gemplus is a leading company in this field so I thought about buying a smart card reader from it and a java smart card.
I thought about buying the "USB Smart Card Reader/Writer Plug n Play (GemPC430)" reader which costs 69$.
Is this a reasonable price?
I need an answer from someone with experience using it.
Now then, which one should I buy?
I only want to do smart card to desktop application interaction without anything on the web (e-commerce or anything to do with encryption).
I can buy 5 "GS2.2 Standard Crypto GPK8000su512 RED"
cards which cost 87.50$
THATS A LOT OF MONEY!!!!
Are all java smart cards that expensive?
There is a list of other cards on their site but I haven't been able to locate their price and don't know which to buy.
Finally, there is the "Kit, GemSAFE Enterprise Workstation 2.21 Standard Cryptography Serial Port Reader" which as I read consists a GPK8000 card.
Is this card a java card?
Or do I need to buy the reader and java card seperately.
Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I've looked closely at the Cyberflex 32K cards + SDK from Schlumberger.
My criteria was:
* Javacard 2.1 support
* visa open support (or whatever it is called now)
* complete sdk (develop, test, deploy)
* exportable
* upgradable
* customer support
I tried to get someone from Gemplus to contact me, but was unable to ever get even an
email response.
Schlumberger, on the other hand, won me over with the quick responses over email.
They offer fairly inexpensive upgrades after you buy the product, and technical support
is free.
For simple experimentation, you can get the JavaCard SDK for free. At JavaOne, several
years ago, they were giving away JavaRings with Card Readers (which presumably
means these are cheap to buy) from SCM or some company in Texas. You might
try to get one of these. They don't have much memory, but are an interesting twist
on the Java Card thing.
If you want to dive in, the Smart Card SDK from Schlumberger will run you about $499.
This includes the reader, 5 cards, and the SDK. Likewise, Metrowerks puts out an
IDE for Java Card which runs about $1200, and may be available as a bundle from
vendors like Schlumberger.

  • Help needed in learning the basics of Java Smart Card and implementation?

    Hello every body,
    I am trying to develop the applications on java contactless smart cards technology.
    Can any body give me the details like how to start?
    What are the required softwares and installation procedure and path settings and etc.?
    I am the beginner in java smart card application development.
    plz help me out

    Dear Friend,
    I would advice to divide learning into two main parts: JavaCard technology and contactless RFID cards. For JavaCard technology you can find useful articles on Sun web-site (developers.sun.com/mobility/javacard/articles/javacard1/). For contactless RFID you can find few useful books at Amazon. Regarding software you need JC development kit. How to install it there is an instrunction in JCDK user guide.
    If it is not a secret what a javacard contactless card you are going to use in your work?

  • Compression with Java/Smart Cards

    I am a Software Development Student. I am currently researching the area of data ZIP compression in conjunction with Java/Smart cards. Just wondering if anyone has come across a similar project and if so where?
    Thanks.

    We can't deal with real compression, as you known the jcvm is composed of the converter and the jcre
    the compression is related to the converter.jar
    There are many ways to produce compressed code compared to an original not optimisez code.
    Real comresion is not really possible on a such support, the processor is not enought fast. In my mind, the only compression possible can be the rle. Not very brilliant if it is not used for images...

    Since I downloaded Apple's latest operating system, whenever I try to open Illustrator I get a message that I need to install legacy Java SE6 runtime and to click "more info" to do this. When I click "more info" I get a blank window. What should I do

    Hi,
    I had the same problem after upgrading to Yosemite. Illustrator CS6 wouldn't open. I got a message saying I should 'install legacy Java SE6 runtime'.
    The link didn't work - it lead to a blank page.
    So I downloaded Java8 (latest version) from Oracle but didn't install it. Something told me this was not the right way to go (the problem was with Java SE6, not 8). I then called Apple (in the Netherlands, were I live) for help. I got none. The best they could do was blaming Adobe for the problem or me, for not having the latest Adobe CC app. Rubbish.
    And then, magic. I tried to open Illustrator again, got the pop up message but this time the link worked. It took me to an official Apple page, with a link to download Java for OS X 2014-001. The problem is now solved.
    If curious, this is the explanation Apple gives for the problem:
    'Java for OS X 2014-001 includes installation improvements, and supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X. This package installs the same version of Java 6 included in Java for OS X 2013-005. On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006 or later, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled 'missing plug-in' to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.'
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6133 for more details about this update.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 for information about the security content of this update.

    I agree with LowLister, the best option for you to share the video online is to upload it to your online storage account for example : Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive (All of them provide free storage beginning from 2GB).
    You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!
    Tip : You can store multiple files for backup purposes.

  • Smart card and Account Lockout Policies Issue

    I have enabled "Interactive logon: Require smart" card and "Account Lockout threshold: 3 invalid logon attempts". The lockout policy works fine with normal passwords. However, when I try to use the smart card and entering wrong PIN 4
    times, the lockout policy does not work.
    Can anyone please help with this issue?

    Hi,
    the validity of the PIN is managed by the smartcard itself, not by windows. Windows just logs in of the smartcard gives the right certificates/keys. the smartcard will only do so when it is provided a valid PIN.
    Also note an account should not be locked out to avoid brute forcing the PIN. instead, the smartcard should lock.

  • I need some information about jre 1.5 and jre 1.6.

    Hello guys,
    I need some information about jre 1.5 and jre 1.6.
    Suppose if i have jre 1.5 customized with "additional language support" installed in my my desktop, and later on i install jre 1.6. will this jre over write all the esisting settings which was present in jre 1.5?
    In short will the version upgrades disable the features of the old Version even though the old version is present in the desktop?
    Thanks in advance for your answers.

    ^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^ ^^
    That's not a trivial step. I would write a small C/C++ program that
    exercises your driver (for robustness) just to be sure it's working
    right first without crashing your system.
    >The problem is that I don't know to use this driver in LabView.
    >For now, I think to use a "code interface node" with code writen in C or a
    >"call library function" with a DLL.
    That's correct. _After_ you got your C/C
    ++ test program (and USB
    driver) above working, then you can convert this little test program
    into a DLL or CIN, which can interface with LabView. A DLL might be
    easier (slightly) to write, but the CIN will work faster with LabView
    and can be designed to be reentrant. The Code Interface Reference
    Manual should guide you. Remember, this is a task for an _experienced_
    C programmer. You'll need to use handles to pointers into all your
    dynamic arrays and such passed into LabView.
    After you got your CIN or DLL written, you can use a special CIN
    function node to "link" (or bind) your CIN object into LabView's VI
    diagram.
    SOME THOUGHTS:
    There are many hardware devices already on the market today that come
    with Windows 98 drivers and DLL (or even CIN) libraries that would work
    immediately with LabView. Why don't you save yourself three months of
    work and simply buy one of these?

  • Smart Card and  Java Card (URGENT)

    Dear everyone.
    I have purchased a card reader (which is supposed to be java card compatible).
    I have 2 problems.
    1. I just wonder if i can use a Smart Card generally available. Do i need to have a special card for Java Card??
    2. Can i use card kit to interface to the reader/writer? How do i install my applets??
    Please reply soon.
    Thank you very much.

    I tried to execute the OCF samples.
    this code
    OpenCard.services = com.ibm.opencard.factory.MFCCardServiceFactory
    did not give any trouble
    this code
    OpenCard.terminals = com.ibm.opencard.terminal.pcsc10.Pcsc10CardTerminalFactory
    gave some troubles. May be because iam not using ibm terminal(card).
    And also, i think the OCF samples will not work anyhow, because the Reflex reader is not OCF complaint.
    So the following may not work
    OpenCard.services = com.slb.opencard.Cyberflex
    I have most imp. questions to ask you now.
    1. What card should i purchase and from whom (along with some software if necessary)?
    2. What is the procedure for reading/writing to that card using the Reflex reader.
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Goldy.

  • Some questions about Java deployment steps and techniques

    All my java experience is coding and testing in my local machine (where, of course, a jre is available), but ... when I deploy to other people, they may not have a jre or they may have a different version of it than the one needed to run my application. I've read different stuff online including jars and java web start but still I have many questions.
    (1) first one first, Sun contradicts common sense, when it says that i can redistribute my own customized light version of their jre by taking out some files (java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/jre/README). there are two ways for me to get a jre: Way one is by downloading one from Sun, the download comes as an *.exe file and I don't see how I can take files out of it, so do you know how?. Way two would be by simply copying the set of files i choose (according to that Readme) from my current jre installation (the one on my \java\jdk\jre directory), does this make sense?, (if you're under windows) doesn't an installed version of a jre need a couple of dlls plus some new registry entries?, this contradicts common sense, if I'm not wrong, that Readme is a nonsense, but since that readme is at each of us jre installation \java\jdk1.x\jre\Readme, it can't be a nonsense, therefore I'm wrong, therefore the answer is either Way 1 or Way 2, HOW? ... or maybe there's a Way 3?
    (2) Say I never read that Readme so I download the jre (as an exe) to bundle it along with my application in a jar ... now I'll give my neighbor either a jar with two exes or two exes jars ... is there a way to make a jar so that two files get executed? ... if the answer is No and I have competition from a second neighbor, then I believe I'm asking my first neighbor to choose my application based on our friendship, that's not reasonable if we are doing business, so Java loses.
    (3) Say that my application is a single executable file like this,
    class X{
    public static void main(String[]$$$){
    System.out.println("Console, where are you?");
    At this point, say that my neighbor accepted the two executables, he executed the jre.exe and has jre6 in his system, now he double clicks on my X.jar ... it's a console application and jar files are not associated with the java.exe launcher since java 5, but with javaw which doesn't open any console ... how do i make it so a console opens and prints "Console, where are you?" ... do I ask my neighbor-customer to add a couple of lines to his path and open his console and (please) enter java -jar jarfile.jar? ... isn't it too much? ... i hope i'm wrong cause this is kind of discouraging
    (4) I've read that by installing a more recent version of a jre on a system that has an older jre (there to help other applications work), I might be causing a problem for the other applications to run ... I guess that's the reason why that Readme kind of encourage to redistribute a "private" version of a jre (one that doesn't come with a java.exe launcher ... any feedback on this?
    (5) I'm reading a lot of hype about Java Web Start ... it looks better than the traditional jar/jre deployment ... but setting up a MIME type to *.jnlp, it doesn't come with some free hosting I've checked ... somebody can recommend a free hosting service that allows to set a *.jnlp MIME? (I'll appreciate a suggestion here, cause I would like to test Web Start)... and, anyhow, how you people compare it with the paradigm of the single executable file?.
    Thanks. Your feedback is highly appreciated.

    ..(5) I'm reading a lot of hype about Java Web Start ... It's gratifying to think that someone who wants to deploy apps., has the common sense to search first! You would not guess how I often I hear "I wanna' make an EXE" shortly followed by "What's webstart?".
    ...it looks better than the traditional jar/jre deployment ... but setting up a MIME type to .jnlp, it doesn't come with some free hosting I've checked ... OK. You cannot define new mime types, but perhaps the site already has it defined. An easy way to check is to upload 'any old file' that ends in .jnlp and use the [mime type checker|http://pscode.org/mime/] to see what content type it is served as.
    ..somebody can recommend a free hosting service that allows to set a .jnlp MIME? (I'll appreciate a suggestion here, cause I would like to test Web Start)... I'm pretty sure the Google based sites offer it.

  • Removed use a password feature, now I have to enter a smart card and have no admin rights!

    HI,
    I recently have bought a new laptop with windows 8, I did not like using a password to sign in. After removing that feature by accessing the users and checking the remove password box and restarting the computer I seem to have lost all administrative rights.
    I tried the trust this machine signup online however that did nothing. I am prompted to insert a smart card however I have no account to change to and I have no rights on this account.
    Any advice would be great,

    Hi,
    How about your problem now? How did you remove the Password feature? Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" like the picture below?
    In your login screen, Is there any window to input password? or only need to inser a smart card? If so, maybe you need to reinstall your Windows. For Windows login problem with password, you can refer to link below:

    Kind Regards,
    K. Hairopoulos

    There's no current plan to implement S/MIME and SmartCard support for WAC, although we have the technical expertise in-house to do it, I think. Three years ago we implemented a prototype of S/MIME enabled OCS WebMail capable of reading private keys stored on a SmartCard. That project did not turn into product features.
    The big difficulty with implementing and deploying S/MIME is the availability of an underlying public key infrastructure (for public key lookup, for example). IMHO the fact that we don't have S/MIME in Webmail or WAC reflects that OCS customers either don't have the infrastructure or don't require S/MIME beyond SSO. If that assumption is false, and there is a demand for S/MIME enabled WAC, please communicate the need through the usual product management channels.
