Need advice on backup hardware

I am using an Xserve for a disk-to-disk backup, and as our data has expanded, we need more backup room. The Xserve is connected to a RAID, and we need to back up about 1.5 TB from that RAID once a week for offsite storage.
Each night, the backups go to the RAID. All is well there. But the weekly offsite storage is the issue.
This will be rotated weekly, so there would be two offsite drives or modules -- one offsite at all times.
Up to now, we have been using Firewire connected drives, and rotating them offsite has worked OK. Now we are evaluating three ideas to accomplish this task on a more professional level, and I would welcome feedback on these ideas. Tape is not an option.
Options proposed are:
1. Using "raw" drives (1.5 or 2 TB mechanisms) in a simple hard-drive docking station. The drives would be placed in these each week, then stored in a case of some sort when offsite.
2. Using standard desktop drive/case units (i.e. LaCie, Iomega, etc.).
3. Using a rack-mounted solution (OWC, Sonnet, etc) that has FireWire/eSATA connectivity and hot-swap drives in sleds. These, too, would be in a case of sorts when offsite.
4. Using a drive module on the Xserve -- buy, say, two 80GB ADMs and the replace the mechanisms with a 1.5 or 2 TB mechanisms. These, too, would be in a case of sorts when offsite. Since the Xserve is connected to a RAID, one other drive would be the boot/backup software drive and remain in place at all times.
My initial thoughts:
Option 1 leaves the drive too vulnerable, and the units allow the drives to get hot when used for long periods of time. Drives also are spinning down as they are removed, which could be risky. I don't like this idea.
Option 2 works (and has worked) but it involves unplugging FW800 and power cables from the drives, and then these heavy units must be dealt with. An OK solution, but not ideal.
Option 3 appeals to me because it offers some security for the drive (sleds, ability for the drive to spin down once unmounted and before transport) yet without the bulk of an external drive such as a LaCie. Also, being rack mounted, no power or data cables must be touched.
Option 4 is, like Option 3, simple (no power/data to deal with), and offers some security for the drives. But it involves placing unapproved drives into the Xserve as well as putting lots of insertion/removal cycles on the Xserve drive bays (which may or may not be designed for this use).
Any thoughts? I'd really like to get some feedback...
Thanks,
Pete

To clarify:
The data we'd take off site would be a duplicate of what's on the RAID. So in this scenario, nightly backups are done to the RAID, which keeps a week's worth of snapshots. Then, on Sunday, the RAID's content is simply duplicated to an individual drive -- let's say 'Drive A' -- which is taken off site Monday and swapped with 'Drive B.' The following Sunday, the RAID's content is duplicated to Drive B, and the process repeats itself. These offsite drives could/would/are any of the options suggested.
The purpose of the duplicated data is to provide protection in case of a fire or other disaster.
Because of the amount of data -- and the fact that this company only keeps data for a week or so (there is no need for massive long-term archiving; what is archived is done by a different means) -- tape is a costly solution, and it is slow. Tape was used at one time, but the company has moved away from it. Speed, frankly, was a major problem with tape (we still have a Quantum DLT device that holds up to 600 gb (compressed -- reality was about 350gb) data, but it is not being used at present.)
I agree: Your points are valid about the sleds, and the "options." These are the options on the table, and I'm trying to get feedback on these or different options to propose.
Agreed, too: None of these may be ideal. Maybe we should go back to dumping these weekly offsites to the DLT or another tape unit.
Thank you for the input, and any other ideas would be helpful!
Pete

  • Need Advice on Backup strategy

    Hi,
    Database version:10.2.0.
    Database Size:60GB.
    Daily Updation Approximately :2GB.
I need some advice on my backup strategy.
    My backup startegy:
Monthly Once, Date: 1 Full backup (Incremental level 0).
Daily Incremental level 2 backup from Date: 2 to 6.
Weekly Once Incremental leve 1 backup on Date:7.
Daily Incremental level 2 backup from Date:8 to 13.
Weekly Incremental level 1 backup on Date:14.
Daily Incremental level 2 backup from Date:15 to 21.
Weekly Incremental level 1 backup on Date:22.
Daily Incremental level 2 backup from Date:23 to 28.
Weekly Incremental level 1 backup on Date:29.
My system requirments are i have only 70GB disk to store the backups, i can store only the full backup in it.So what i am doing is, Am storing the full backup in my disk and am transfering the Incrmental level 1(weekly Once backup) to the Tape and deleting the Daily level 2 backups, after taking that weekly backup.
Is my strategy correct or should i do anything different plz give me some advice.
    TIA,

This backup strategy doesn't look bad. However the 70G of free space will be a pain in the neck. I suggest you to increase storage. Have you considered archivelog too? This average 2G daily transaction rate will increase storage requirements, sooner or later, so backup storage requirements.

  • My first built system for Premiere CS5. Need advice to approve hardware list.

    Hi All:
After some research and reading some of the posts I have cane up with the hardware list I (think) I will need to built my first editing system for Premiere, Photoshop and AE CS5. I have came out so far with an estimate of around US$1500.00, without considering yet the hard drives. I do not if top wait a little bit until prices drop or just do it. I am not sure yet if I will start with an SSD for the OS and what type yet. I will figure it out later and ask your kind advice.
As I post my list I will note what options it would be recommended for a good system. I just have a basic acknowledge of computers and excuse me if I make any insane comments. I hace seen some videos and read some other users experiences and I am very confident I can built my very first system.
I am planning to start ordering some of the parts as soon as possible (like the case, BDR) and tdo the rest in the next days.

  • Need Advice on Backups (w/wo Time Machine)

Just purchased a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server. Setup is in a small office with two users, with expansion in the future. The mac mini, as most of you know, has two hard drives, one with the system files on it and an empty one for use as you deem. I have an external 1TB hard drive as well, that I was using for backing up my laptop. Now that I have a server, I am wondering how I should run my backups. I was thinking about hosting all files on the main hard drive, using Time machine to back up to the secondary hard drive, and maybe use the external to backup the laptops to. What do you think? I am also familiar with Carbon Copy Cloner for backups, and wouldn't mind using that either, to run backups. Thanks in advance for the input.

TM is not your best bet for backing up OS X Server. It will not fully backup some files.
You can use CCC to backup the Server if you boot the server from another source - for example the install DVD.
You might also consider using one HD for the OS and one HD for the data. You can then backup the data without taking the server offline, and backup the OS as often as is needed, which tends to be less often than the data needs to be backed up.
A Time Capsule might be a good bet for backing up the laptops.
You may also want to consider a service like carbonite for the laptops. Not sure if it would work for a server, but it would give you automatic offsite backups for your laptops.
You're definitely on the right track to think about backups as a priority - just make sure you decide what you need for backups, and go from there.

  • Budget €2300,- Need advice with laptop hardware for AE, Premiere Pro CC/CS6

    Hi Folks,
These are some specific questons so if one of you have purchased or upgraded their laptop recently could know some of these things. Otherwise, any informed idea is really appriciated.
I'm planning to purchase a production laptop specially for AE and Premiere Pro.
I've come to understand that my budget allows me to have a nvidia Quadro M3000k. I guess you guys understand why I focuse
on the video card. My reasoning is: finding a machine with 3rd gen core i7, 16 or 32gb of ram, 1080p screen etc is quite easy in todays machines.
But I'm sturggeling to find one with the right, and affordable video card. My budget is arond 2300 euros btw. Give or take a 100.
    So:
    - Concidering my 2300 euro budget, do any of you know a good machine to suggest? Besides what I mentioned above, I'm looking for one where I can put 32gb ram in.
    - In the link below, nvidia itself suggestes some laptops, I ended up with the HP EliteBook 8770w (it may seem quite cheap for my budget but unfortunately me living in Holland means by the time it has been imported and all the taxes paid, the price will be quite a bit more) and Dell Precision m6700 (this one is around 2300 euros in Holland).
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/mobile-workstation-notebooks.html
    - And am I failing to concider some other important feature folks?
    Thanx in advance
    Umyd

    Thank you folks very much.
Waw I was already searching for a machine with a quadro video card for two days before I consulted you guys and I'm so glad I did!
This is where I ended up now: Alienware M17x
    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=n00w7m01&model_id=alienware-m17x-r 4&c=nl&l=nl&s=dhs&cs=nldhs1
It has a 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680M. Which will make it cuda capable(?)
It does have eSATA port and usb3.
It just seemed to have only two slots for hard drive. Unlike some "worksations" that have 4. Is this problematic?
For hard drive I chose 128GB mSATA Boot Drive + 750GB 7,200rpm SATA 3Gb/s. Plus the eSATA and usb3 ports, it should be fine. Shouldn't it?

  • I just exchanged a faulty iPhone 4 for a new one, when I got home to restore it, iCloud says "cannot restore backup". Can somebody please help provide much needed advice? Thanks in advance!

I just exchanged a faulty iPhone 4 for a new one, when I got home to restore it, iCloud says "cannot restore backup". Can somebody please help provide much needed advice? Thanks in advance!

Yep, that's the only message that popped out. Nothing else. Yes, it's running on the latest ios and I still can't restore it. I called apple and they told me it's probably something wrong with their servers. Anyway thanks for the advice.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

  • Can I set up a 2 (or 3) room audio system? I have iphone 3, iphone 4 and ipad 2 and need to know what hardware, if any, I need for this (airport express?, apple TV?) Also, would I use icloud or home sharing?

I need to know what hardware, if any, I need to do this (airport express?, apple TV?)
I simply want to send music from my itunes to 2 different rooms at the same time. Is it possible? I have iphone3, iphone4 and ipad2 if that helps.
Also, would I use icloud or home sharing? Sorry for the noob question, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

The answer is not if you use iTunes.
The TC is NOT an iTunes server.. it is not a media device at all. It is a backup location for Time Machine.
You need a computer in the network which stores the iTunes library and you can then play it via the ipad.
A mini with a large USB drive plugged in will work fine.. it doesn't need to be new.. a couple of years old mini will work just as well.
As an extention to this, can we use multiple Airport expresses plugged into mutiple sound systems to simultaneously access different music from the same time capsule?
I am not sure.. there will be network limitations to this.
Look up how to use itunes in a network.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4620
You would do better perhaps posting the question in iTunes section.. if as I guess you are actually using iTunes.

  • Need advice on video software.

    Need advice on video software.
I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?
I am also asking these same questions on the cyberlink site.
I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • HT4113 My screen in broken and I need to sync/backup my phone. Please help!!!

My iphone 5 screen went out on me (it is blacked out) and I need to sync/backup my phone before I get it serviced for a new screen.  Unfortuantely, I am unable to sync my device to my itunes on my macbook, because it is asking me to enter my passcode to unlock my phone.  The only problem is my screen doesn't work so I am unable to do so!  I am able to call Siri on my phone, but even she is saying she cannot unlock my phone even if I verbally told her my password. I already have an apple appointment set up, but I didn't realize this question until I got home.  I understand my itunes purchases are retrievable- it's my personal photos, notes, videos etc that I am trying to save.  My cloud backup is already maxed out, but there is still more stuff on my phone to salvage.  I would like to have my phone info backed up before they fix/restore my screen. I risk losing everything! (disclaimer: My previous laptop has been broken so I was unable to do a recent backup, hence my frustration).  Please, if you can offer me any constructive advice on how to sync my disabled screen and passcode-locked phone, that would be greatly appreciated!

I am connected to a Mac with OS 10.4. Thank  you!

  • Syncing iPod to new user account-need advice

Hey All! I set up a new user account for my friend on my imac, so he will want to sync his iPod Touch to iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, etc. in his new user account. I know there are plenty of freeware and shareware apps to get his music from the iPod into iTunes, but need advice concerning everything else oh his iPod.
I know I'll first get that pop up window that says his iPod is synced to another computer, and that I use "cancel" rather than "sync and erase". After doing that, I guess I use one of the shareware apps to get the music transferred over.
Now, after that, if I do a regular sync, will iTunes transfer his apps that are on the iPod?
Do I need to open iPhoto and download the photos on his iPod into iPhotot before doing a sync?
What about text messages? Will they remain in tact?
I don't think he uses the calendar on his iPod so no worries there....
What about Playlists that he has on the iPod? Will just the music transfer with the shareware apps or playlists also?
    Will Notes be saved?
Thanks for your help. Don't wanna screw up his iPod by setting up this user account for him.

Apps are tied to the ID I assume the new account is just on the iMac and not a new iTunes account?
Yes, you can import photos into iPhoto the same as you would off any camera.
You would need to transfer purchased content (like apps). You can't do that via sync as it's a new computer and all content will be erased as you are aware.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
What happened to your friends computer? Was there no backup?

  • Need Advice: Re-Ripping ALL of my CDs using ALAC/Apple Lossless

I need advice from some experienced users (having searched for answers for a couple of days and not finding a comprehensive solution).  I want to "upgrade" my iTunes library (95% of which is from my CD collection) from ACC (the default iTunes file format) to ALAC (lossless format). I realize that music purchased from the iTunes store will remain in ACC format, but I am using this opportunity to "archive" or "digitize" my CD collection.  I have some, but not a lot, of non-critical tags, album art, etc. set up with my current library.  I will be saving all of the music files in a new folder on a single hard disc on my network (with backup).  I use iTunes Match.  I have Windows PCs, Macbook Pro (OSX), iPhone, iPad, iPod.  Given these factors, I am seeking recommendations:
Does it make sense to "start over" and create a brand new iTunes library?
(this would certainly give me time to complete my project while still using my current iTunes library)
If yes, what do I need to do in order to "activate" the new library once it is complete in order to reset iTunes Match and all of the other devices using my iTunes library?  What complications can I anticipate?
If no, what is the best way to replace the existing albums in my iTunes library with the new ALAC files?  Do I simply insert the CD and import it with my new settings?  Will iTunes take care of the rest (saving the new file, deleting the old format, matching tags, etc.)?  What complications can I anticipate?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of allowing iTunes to "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library?"
Any other suggestions, warning, smart alec remarks?
I know there are a lot of questions bound up in this post, but if you have converted your iTunes music collection to one of the lossless or uncompressed formats, I would love to learn from your experience (and am guessing others will as well).  Thanks!

In most cases you should be able to re-import your CDs to the existing library - iTunes will automatically replace your media files and retain all previously added metadata.  This does depend on the library being the same one as you originally imported the CDs in AAC format (i.e., the same computer or the result of a complete library migration).  You should experiment with a couple of CDs to verify this behavior - I've done this successfully to "update" some of the older content of my library which had been imported as 128kbps AAC to 256kbps..
Obviously this approach will put your media into the existing library media folders, which is going to be the simplest approach.  If you subsequently want to move the library to a different drive, see turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable.  If you're concerned about running out of disc space on the drive that currently hosts your library, you could follow these guidelines to move the library to a second, larger drive before starting to re-import using ALAC.
This is the approach I'd recommend, though there are a couple of other possibilities:
Create a new, empty library on the second drive by holding down SHIFT as you start iTunes; when you see this prompt:
click on Create Library..., navigate to the second drive and create the library there (best approach is to create this in a new iTunes folder in the root of the drive.  This will guarantee "clean" imports but you'll not be able to re-use any metadata, artwork, playlists, etc. contained in your current library.  To switch between libraries, SHIFT-start and use the Choose Library... option to select the library you want to be active.
On the second drive, create a folder called iTunes in the root and a folder called iTunes Media inside this.  Then, with iTunes running against your current library, select Edit > Preferences > Advanced, change the iTunes Media folder location to the one you've just created (i.e., X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, if the second drive is "X:".  Also make sure that the Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder... options are checked.  When you re-import your CDs the media files should be placed on the second drive ... note, though, that I've not verified that this approach will work - in theory it should do but you should definitely test with one or two CDs before going any further.  This approach will result in a "split" library where your library database is on the C: drive and the media divided between drives (since your iTunes Store purchases will still be on C:).  This is generally not a good idea (if for no other reason than making creation and maintenance of a backup of your library more difficult).  Again, tt2's notes on Make a split library portable describe how to bring the library into a consistent, well-formed layout.

  • Really need advice/help please

I am importing VHS movies and I need advice on procedures, I am really stuck so any advice given will be very helpful.
I have my VCR connected to a ADVC300 analog to digital convertor, which is hooked up to my macbook.
I am using iMovie 08, but have the previous one installed iMovie HD 6.
I have no problem importing the footage... it comes in as a DV file (which I believe I need in order to edit footage later on).
    My problem is:
    1) The size of the DV is HUGE. Is this the format that I need to edit to later put on DVD by converting to mp4?
    2) I am a total novice, so is iMovie the best for doing the import? I have Final Cut Express, but I am not sure how to use it.
    3) I also have QT Pro, but after I am done doing an import and transfer the DV file to my back up drive... I cant seem to get the import to pull up in iMovie again. Do you have to do the editing right away after the import or you loose the ability in iMovie?
    4) My HD space on my computer is almost full and I thought that I deleted the DV file off my computer after transfering it to a backup drive. I went into Movies, and iMovies and deleted it... but it must be stored somewhere else, because I have like 60 GB used still?
    Thank you SO MUCH!!!!

    1) The size of the DV is HUGE. Is this the format that I need to edit to later put on DVD by >converting to mp4?
Yes, DV is huge. You really need an external drive. The hugeness of DV is not an issue for iDVD. iDVD will convert the DV or MP4 into MPEG2 for encoding on the DVD. If you get iMovie 09, you can send DV to iDVD. In iMovie 08, you share as an h.264 file and that goes to iDVD. In my experience, not much difference.
    2) I am a total novice, so is iMovie the best for doing the import? I have Final Cut Express, but I am >not sure how to use it.
Yes, iMovie 08/9 is the best. You can easily edit in iMovie 08. However if you later want to edit in FCE, you can access these files from FCE. If you import into FCE, iMovie can't see them.
    3) I also have QT Pro, but after I am done doing an import and transfer the DV file to my back up >drive... I cant seem to get the import to pull up in iMovie again. Do you have to do the editing right >away after the import or you loose the ability in iMovie?
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME. You should see your external drive in the Event Library list. You can drag your file from your internal drive to the external drive by dragging and dropping the icon for your event onto the icon for the external drive. If you do it this way, iMovie will still see it.
    4) My HD space on my computer is almost full and I thought that I deleted the DV file off my >computer after transfering it to a backup drive. I went into Movies, and iMovies and deleted it... but >it must be stored somewhere else, because I have like 60 GB used still?
It might be in your trash. Try emptying your trash.

  • Need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on orac

need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on oracle 10G r2
I like to have have a Primary ( 10 node RAC cluster ) shipping to a physical standby ( 3 node RAC cluster ) shipping using LGWR .
So I have a lot of questions
    1) What will be the performance overhead on the Primay if we are using LGWR SYNC option .
    2) Does the overhead depends on the physical distance between primary & physical
3)Do you recommend a seperate private network for shipping logs between primary and standby.
    4) I know that DGMGRL supports RAC only from 10g. So are there any know issues are bugs using DGMGRL is RAC environments.
    Thanks in advance

Generally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.
Actually starting with 11.1 you don't need to have the same hardware setup: it 's even possible to have primary and standby database on different platforms: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053.

  • Need advice about certification: do J2SE 1.4 or wait for 1.5 to go out?

I need advice here! I am studing for Java Programmer certification (310-035) and I know now that the certification does not have any expiration date, instead it's version based. So, if I get now a J2SE 1.4 certification, soon it will be outdated... I guess!
Does anyone know or have any ideia of WHEN java 1.5 sdk will be avaliable, and anyone can tell me how long it will take for a new 1.5 programmer certification be avaliable for general public?

Do both. 1.5 is far enough away that you do not want to wait for it.
And besides, 1.5 has enough new stuff in it that you'll want to recertify anyway.
