Need book recommendation

All -
I'm interesting in learning how to integrate sqlplus within BASH scripts. We run Solaris 10 and Oracle 10g on SPARC hardware. I want to create some small databases and interact with those within BASH scripts with sqlplus. Can anyone recommend a good book or online tutorial where I can find information on that? I'm already well versed in BASH, just need to learn the sqlplus side. I'm not a programmer so perl/java/python etc are not options. The sort of tasks I want to accomplish are simple queries, inserting/deleting data. All suggestions appreciated.

You are doing it the hard way, but see http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Scripts#Unix_Shell_Scripts
Basically, you need to know sql and pl/sql, whether you use bash or whatever. You ought to become adept with sqlplus and sqldeveloper, and you really need to understand relational concepts. Tom Kyte's books are real good for understanding important concepts, there are plenty of sql books, I'm not familiar with what is good at the basic level these days so I won't comment.
You do need to read the Concepts guide, see the book list from the sql doc reference you got. The simple fact you said "small databases" indicates you may already have some basic misconceptions.
If you are writing shell scripts, you are a programmer, whether you like it or not.
You might seriously consider downloading XE, so you can get simple things running quick, and then start delving in from the sql side.We have Oracle running already, maintaining massive DNS databases. However we have other applications that interact with the database so we don't need to know SQL in order to do our thing. So, my knowledge of SQL commands is pretty basic at the moment (simple queries, small record changes). When I say "small database", I'm referring to a roughly 150 record, 8 field database that updates at most 10 records per week, as opposed to our DNS database which contains over a million records with dozens of local and remote users using a java web platform. I'd like to become adept at sqlplus and the references you have provided are most helpful plus get a better understanding of SQL in general.
As for programming, while I do write large scripts, I'm not a trained programmer. I come from the electronics side as a former field service engineer who moved into IT after 20 years. I'm self taught on the programming side and learning as I need to accomplish tasks. Thus I've dabbled in creating web pages and web sites, writing simple SQL commands, working with XML etc, but have a long way to go in that respect.
Thanks for your input.

  • Needed: Book(s) recommendations for beginner, needing to come up to speed for complexity quickly

    Hello all,
I've been kind of thrown into the need to learn LV quickly. I've gone through the LV 101 videos, and got a decent start....but need to learn more in-depth quickly. I'm looking maybe for a book on amazon, that will get me as a noob started quickly...but also, something needed beyond just the basics of trying to explain the concept of the front panel and block diagram screens....
I'm needing to get into learning how to wire up things like even structures...being able to allow the user to right click an object on the screen, present a drop down menu, and change the object based on their selection. I've posted here before looking how to do multi-colored indicators..and starting to get a grip on some of that, but still not yet...
I'm looking at an example of an older version of the app I'm trying to create and improve on...and see how they were changing  a boolean indicator (they used a round one, but was flat unlike the LED shaped ones)..but they were able to change the colors of the text and control with three different background and text combinations both when it was clicked, and programatically when a trigger was pressed...etc.
I'm seeing a structure they used called a "property node" and using colors under that to change it, it appears....I need to learn to understand that....but the application I have is a bit complex for me to track and figure out everything as it flows....
I thought I'd seen a recommendation for a book on this forum called: Labview for Everyone...but that is dated 2006...would this be too old since I'm working with LabView 2011?
Anyway, I'm looking through all the stuff in the NI site's Knowledgebase....but think getting a quality book that is a bit structured taking me from basics to more complex things would be the best way for me to learn and organize my thoughts.
I've programmed (awhile back) with Delphi for Object Pascal...and some java with Eclipse. But with Delphi, I have worked with an IDE...putting object on a screen, and then setting and programming properties...but LV is a bit different, and I'm just not familiar with all the objects available to me..and the graphical programming rather than writing code in there to handle things..is a bit new to me.
Anyway, hoping ya'll can give me some good book recommendations...and any links to web info greatly appreciated too.
    Thank you in advance!!

    cayenne,
without giving any special suggestion, i want to point out:
Even "out dated" books can give you valuable information since the programming paradigm of LabVIEW (dataflow) is still valid.
Ok, we have to admit that information on certain elements as well as esp. performance might not be true because of the changes LV had undergone over the years (e.g. compiler changes in LV 2009/2010).
Adding to this, i urge you not only to look for technical expertise but also on "how do i approach a development task". I find this link a helpful source for this.
    hope this helps,
    Norbert
Thank you for the reply. I'm looking at the link and it looks informative.
I went ahead and bought the book LabView for everyone. One thing however, I read in one review, that the book is light on the topic of event driven vi''s......which is something I'm definitiely needing information on....simple examples would be even better.
Any links or book recommendations on this particular topic?
    Thank you,
    C

I need a recommendation for a 24" professional photography monitor for my late 2013 MacBook Pro.  I am looking for a monitor that plays well with my 13" late 2013 Macbook pro.  I tryed the Dell U2413 and found after the fact that it did not work well with my Macbook pro.  Read up on the Asus PA 249Q, It also seems to have problems with my Macbook Pro.  Apple display is larger than i want.  Looking for recommendations for compatable IPS monitor for use with Aperture. buget is $300 to $800.
    Anybody happy with thiers?

Any monitor will work. Decide what specs work best for your needs and get that monitor.

  • Need printer recommendation

My Epson r340 printer is having gaps on my black ink even after cleaning several times. Funny is when doing the test print all the colors even the black ink would show all the lines coming out. If this can't be fixed I need a recommendation for a replacement printer that has a CD tray that can print cd/DVD. I'm not sure if I want Epson again as this is my second printer from them that's having a problem.

I switch to Canon printers ages ago and haven't looked back. Epson lost my business with poor post-purchase support and ink shenanigans. The Canon IP 7220 has been good printer for me so far and replaced the Canon IP 3600 I used for nearly 5 years and thousands of sheets of paper.

Thanks, Sig.  I think I should've been a little clearer.  I've attempted to do the updates on my Mac, but I get a warning that it will erase everything except calenders, email, etc from the iPad.  I've syned the iPad with the Mac with no problem, but get scary messages when I try to do the latest update.

This is not known behavior of Flashback.  To make sure you're not infected, just install any updates that are available in Software Update.  For more info on this, see About the Flashback malware.
That e-mail just sounds like a phishing attempt, and trying to open and view the attached zip file is a major error!  It probably contains malware.  Fortunately for you, it's almost certainly Windows malware, as I've never yet heard of a case of Mac malware being sent via e-mail in this way.  But it could happen, so you should never, ever open attachments from people you don't know, especially in such suspicious circumstances!
Finally, I, like etresoft, have never heard of Avira.  There's a lot of bad AV software out there, so without knowing more about it, I would agree that it should be removed, using whatever uninstaller is provided by Avira.  If you want to use AV software, use either Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition or ClamXav.  Both are free and excellent.

  • Book recommendation for Content Networking?

    Hi,
Is there any books outhere on cisco CSS, GSS for a good readup?
I know there's a whole lot of docs fr univercd, but was wondering if there are actually books on these products?
    Thanks.

Thank you for your book recommendation. This sounds like an excellent book for learning Flash. From the description on Amazon, the emphasis of this book is on learning Flash with just a little information about ActionScript 3. Perhaps there is enough ActionScript 3 information in this book to get a good foundation with ActionScript, to learn the terminology and syntax?

  • Book Recommendation for Fathers Day?

I'm waiting for Illustrator CS4 Wow! to come out here in the UK as my next book purchase and I already have a couple of basic manual replacement books which I am steadily ploughing through.  I wonder if anyone could suggest a couple of titles I could give to my kids to distract them from the inevitible cheap aftershave alternative?
I would like either a book that discusses more intermediate issues in Illy rather than the kind of very basic manual replacement books or if you're up for it, suggest a couple of illustration techniques that might be useful and help with my drawing.  I realised pretty quickly that a) Photoshop isn't good at taking your photos, b) Dreamweaver isn't that good at writing your code and c) Illustrator isn't up to drawing your drawings - Maybe a clickable "Inspiration Panel" should be a feature request?
So either any recommendations for drawing techniques that would be useful for digital art and/or recommendations for interemediate level Illustrator techniques?
    Many thanks
    Martin

Thanks for the suggestion but that's one of the books I already have
and think it's one of the best Adobe Software help books I have out of
all of them.  It's really well written and covers a lot of material in
a practical way.  The other Illustrator book I have is by Deke
McClelland which I find to be more like a reference manual than Mordy
    Golding's.

  • Beginner in need of book recommendation

I'm a beginner to CS3 Flash and in need of book or tutorial
recommendations. I have the Flash "Classroom in a Book" and it's
been somewhat helpful. However, a lot of what I want to do, is
import parts of a collage print from CS3 photoshop and animate
them. I am having problems with importing layers from Photoshop and
animating these layers in Flash. Are there any books or tutorials
that go into more detail on this aspect of flash? The other book
that I'm thinking about is Peachpit's Adobe Flash CS3 Professional

I go. I am happy with the site layout and the way it works, but all
of the text is in jpeg form, which means search engines are limited
to the page titles. Is there a way to keep the layout but make the

    Ty
Yes, the question makes perfect sense.
Fireworks is a graphics program. The HTML that Fireworks
produces is intended for prototypes - quick examples you can show
people to see if you're on the right track with a design. The
Fireworks HTML is not robust enough to use for a production site.
What you want to do is use either a program that's designed for
creating robust HTML (such as Dreamweaver) or learn to write HTML
by hand in a text editor. It isn't really that hard.
What you have now is a mess. It would be impossible to
maintain. Just looking at your file info%20links.HTML is a
nightmare. It doesn't need to look like that...and it shouldn't.
(Also, naming conventions. That %20 is what happens to spaces in
your file name. It's better to remove spaces or use hyphens
instead. Underscores are okay, but they tend to get lost if a file
name is also a link and becomes underlined. Use lowercase for file
    extensions.)
Even if you have Dreamweaver or another Web authoring
program, you really ought to learn what it is you're doing. Check
    out
    this
    earlier thread for some recommendations.
    Good luck!

  • Java Book - Recommendations Needed.

Recommendations for a good BEGINNERS book please.

If you're completely new to programming then I'd suggest checking out some of the older books on first principles that they'll have available in your college library.
This kind of foundation will massively reduce the learning curve for any language.
Then hit the 2nd hand bookstores and find an earlier edition of one of the books mentioned above. All the marketing crap claiming that a new edition is completely updated is irrelevant to your needs. The core language has changed very little in about 6 years, (since the abortion that was the 1.0 event model was justifiably taken out behind the chemical sheds and shot), so anything 1.1 and onwards will suffice as long as you can get access to the errata pages on the web.
Of course, the best approach is simply to use the free resources on this and other sites because the programming manuals aren't overly useful to students entering the field for the first time. I say this because you'll probably be looking at two types of task:
    1) Practical programming (probably so simplistic that you'll be able to solve with reference to the API docs)
    2) Theoretical stuff (Better to look to academic books, trade journals, etc.)
    Try:
    www.theserverside.com
    www.javaranch.com
    www.javaworld.com
    www.oreilly.com
