Need constant keyboard illumination on pre unibody 17" MBP

Hi,
I have a mobile user stuck in an office with horrible lighting that is just bright enough that you can't make out the lettering on the keys but the keyboard illumination won't activate. Is there a way to manually activate the illumination for the keyboard?

Dan

  • MacBook Pro / 10.5 - Keyboard illumination turns itself off

I have several times checked the system pref for keyboard illumination to never turn off. It mysteriously gets unchecked.
I want to be able to log in in the dark. The the screen provides no illumination until I have logged in.
    TIA ...

    Thanks BD,
Did permissions repair before safe reboot, no fixes...
Safe boot, and yes, it did take a while till desktop
Keyboard now not illuminated and in Sys Prefs there is not even an option to allow this (safe boot)
Ran permission repairs and many many things were repaired, all with ARDagent/VNC
Weird part, there is no "Library" directory/folder now in my user folder. It is there if I use terminal, this is a new "feature" with Lion I suppose.
mv'ed the files to ~/Desktop using terminal
    Reboot
    Fixed!
But I went to back to Sys Prefs to verify that the option to illuminate was in Keyboard, it was, I checked it, I un-checked it, wish I hadn't now back to go with constant illumination.....

  • Keyboard Illumination Keys

    PB G4 1.67 Ghz 17in OS 10.4.7
The keyboard illumination keyes do not function at all.
the on off key (F8 does function) but the F9 & F10 keyes do not.
Checked with caps lock on or off, checked with nmubers lock on or off all with the same results.
Check the System Prefs, all seem correct.

    Thanks, Found the answer...
For those needing to know, you must be in an area where the ambient light is low enough.
    The keys then become active.

  • How do I fix a dead trackpad & keyboard illumination?

    Hello,
For over a year now, the trackpad & ambient keyboard illumination hasn't worked on my 17" PowerBook G4 1Ghz. I initially assumed it was just a software misconfiguration, but I installed Leopard clean and now I want to get to the bottom of this.
    Here's the background:
    * The failure has gone from being intermittent (seemed to be related to returning from sleep at one point) to permanent. However, during one of my few false-starts installing leopard the trackpad came alive--but I haven't seen it since.
    * I've reset my PRAM and Power Management Unit.
    * I even booted in to an Ubuntu LiveCD and the trackpad didn't work there, so I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue.
    * I did upgrade the hard drive and was pretty careful with the cabling (the trackpad & keyboard illumination didn't work before this and didn't work after either).
So what do you guys think? Is this hardware related? Are there any other software approaches I should try? If it is hardware related, what do I need to replace?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
    - Jake

Sadly this post won't be helpful. Instead, it's just a "me too". I had working illumination under Panther, and I installed Leopard yesterday (clean install). I skipped Tiger entirely.
Pressing the keyboard illumination keys (F8 through F10) do cause the illumination icon to appear on the screen, but they all have the "n/a" symbol (that circle with the slash through it) on them.
Since I'm entitled to 90 days phone support I've been trying to reach telephone support, but it's Thanksgiving week and I've just been on hold an unusually long (for Apple) while. If I get an answer I'll be sure to post it.

  • SPACES PROBLEM//KEYBOARD ILLUMINATION PROBLEM

    Hey Guys,
I have some problem. I have my MacBook Pro and the keyboard usually lights up when its dark but its not for some reason?
Also for the Spaces I set everthing up and I want to switch up to different spaces by control arrow or number key but it does not work. Only number key for space 1.

not sure about your spaces issue (perhaps some clarification is needed?)
i would check to make sure your keyboard illumination is enabled.

  • After reparation my keyboard illumination stopped working

After receiving my mbp back from the reparation of an other problem I found out that my keyboard illumination doesn't work anymore. In reparation the logic board and hard drive cable are been replaced, so could it be a software related problem/conflict? or should i go back to the reseller and accept the fact that they screwed the previous reparation?
I tried resetting the smc, covered all sensors, and i've even tried labtick but nothing works. even google couldn't help me finding an answer... any suggestions of what possible solutions I might have missed?
    Kind regards,
    Richard

the biggest problem is not having my mbp for the duration of the reparation, I really need it for school and work. The last time I did not have access to my macbook for over 4 weeks and i had to work on a crappy netbook which did not run any of the programs i really needed... the bitemarks caused by the frustration developed in that period are still clearly visible on my hands so to speak, that's why I am so focused on finding a solution...

  • MacBook 2008 (pre-unibody) will hardly run Lion

As stated in the title, my 2008 pre-unibody MacBook w/ Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 gigs of RAM has Lion installed, but will hardly run at all. It takes nearly 3 minutes to boot and after about 10 minutes of use, I get the spinning wheel of death for another 10 minutes. Is this computer simply not good enough for Lion processor wise? Or can I upgrade the RAM to make it run correctly? This is the only computer I have access to on a daily basis, and I want to know if I need to scrounge for a better computer.

You can easily upgrade your RAM up to 6gb.

  • Macbook Pro - Lion Keyboard Illumination

Overall the upgrade to 10.7 worked very well, I'm posting this here as it's specifically a Macbook issue. Everything works great except that I can no longer disable keyboard illumination? I had it disabled pre-install and now its on and will not turn off. Hardly the end of the world but has anyone else seen this and have a fix for it?

I would recomend reseting the SMC.  I looked into resetting pram/nvram but they did not control the issues..
Take a look at this KB http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 the smc directly controls keyboard illumination.
I hope this works for you.

Could you please provide more information regarding your notebook?
What is the full model number? GT70 0NE-242US? Or what?
What OS did the notebook originally come with?
Did the keyboard illumination originally work and now it doesn't recently?
Does it work when you first turn the computer on?

  • Automatic keyboard illumination

Hi, I've got a late 2011 macbook pro 13'' and seem to have a problem with the automatic keyboard illumination.
When is set to automatic the backlight dims in low light conditions instead of brightening. I hold my finger in front of the light sensor and it dims the keyboard to hlf the brightness, I take it off and the keyboard lights up full brightness.
Isn't it supposed to be the other way around.
    Thanks!!

An SMC reset should be able to fix this odd problem:
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
Read how to do it here: SMC reset.

  • Keyboard Illumination Gone after updating to mac os x lion.

    Hi all.
Im using my mid 2009 macbook pro more than 3 years now. i havent had any problems with my keyboard backlight. About 3 days ago i bought Mac OS X Lion and installed it, and the backlight is gone. The F5 - F6 buttons does nothing. And also "automatic keyboard illumination" option from system preference is also gone. Im sure that there is no hardware fault. I installed labtic software and it does illuminate my keyboard. so i know that my hardware is not broken. I think the Mac os x installer read my hardware wrong. Does any one have this issue? Can any body help me to get back my keyboard illumination? Thank you. Sorry for my English.

Could not find any solution through Google. Unfortunately I have to use my Macbook Pro without its most beautiful feature, "KEYBOARD BACKLIGHTING". No disrespect to LABTIC. But I don't like using it. If any body have any idea how to solve my problem I would be gratefully if you shared with me. Thank you OGELTHORPE and dominic23 for your kind advices.

  • After mavericks updating ,i cant pair my wireless keyboard , plus my mac is logged out for logging in i need my keyboard back any help would be here? Ps: i dont have another keyboard

After mavericks updating ,i cant pair my wireless keyboard keyboard working but just not pairing  , plus my mac is logged out for logging in to reach the preferences  i need my keyboard back any help would be here? Ps: i dont have another keyboard to connect .

    For the both of you.
Turn your Mac on, wait until the login screen appears.
Turn off your keyboard, wait several seconds. Hopefully a "Keyboard turned off" or "Keyboard disconnected" comes up. Then remove the batteries.
Turn the Mac off then turn it back on.
When it turns back on, it should say missing keyboard or something of the sort. Put the batteries back into the keyboard and turn it back on. Hopefully it should start talking again.
It sounds like you two have a Mac that doesn't have a built-in keyboard. So you could easily reset the SMC...

best cover for an ipad mini and do you need a keyboard?

If the iPad is unopened, and in the original box, then it comes with the full warranty. However, if it is used, and comes with an original box, it may or may not have the original warranty; if there's still some warranty left, the original seller should have transferred the warranty to you.
    Read this:

The only way you can add to your warranty is by extending an Applecare contract.

  • OS X 10.5.2 MCP After Update keyboard Illumination

After updating my macbook pro OS X 10.5.2 my keyboard illumination and display are acting up. I have rebooted several times.
The first problem was my keyboard illumination was disabled. No matter what I did in sys prefernces it had the "not (/) symbol" displayed with the illumination symbols disabled in grey. I couldn't get it to work at all.
Then my screen started to go from bright to dim. Then my keyboard illumination began to function again. Is anyone else having these issues?

I believe this is still an issue. After the upgrade I noticed a marked difference. Check out this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6586237&#6586237

  • Sound and Keyboard Illumination Keys Not Working!!!

    This is very strange...
I just spent a few days in the hospital. Fortunately, one of the amenities provided was free Wi-Fi. As it turned out, many people took turns using my Powerbook while I wasn't using it myself.
Most of the people that were there visiting, are not Mac-savvy, and when I got my Powerbook back, I discovered a strange surprise.
I have no sound. But it goes further than that, because the sound keys have been completely disabled! So have the keyboard illumination keys!
The icon is grayed out, and there is a circle, with a slash through it, beneath.
    Here's a pic:

    Hi,
    Try this:
The little 'do not enter' symbol you see means that is turned off...
For sound, the F3 key toggles the sound on and off (but does not adjust the volume). If the sound is on, the F4 key turns the volume down, and the F5 key turns the volume up. But with this, the F3 has to be touched to be on, and that symbol will disappear... then use the F5 key (you have to keep tapping it for it to move the volume. Only tap the F3 key once to turn it on, and once to turn it off.
The keyboard is much the same way. The F8 key turns it on or off, while the F9 lowers the intensity and the F10 raises the intensity. Again, one tap on the F8 for on and another for off... with multiple taps on the F9 and F10 to decrease or increase illumination.
That same screen you saw, should be seen but with hash-marks either grey (off) or white (on)... for both. While the sound has the arching sound waves from the horn if it is on, not when it's off. The keyboard has the curved hash marks around the top.
You do have it, if that screen shows... it's just to keep tapping the F5 and the F10 to increase both so you can see/hear the effects.
    Enjoy
