Need explanation for apparent heap size reduction

Hello,
From the GC logs, it appears that the heap size is being reduced across young and old generations after sometime. Is there any explanation to this?
Below are three entries from the logs.

From what has been looked into further - it appears to be an issue with the threads.
The issue is reproducible if threads are simply created and allowed to run for some time and then complete.
The issue is reproducible on JDK 1.5.14 but not with JDK 1.6.37.
The use of thread pools likely masked the issue leading to the above mentioned gc sample.
Update #1:
A plausible solution for 1.5 as determined is to include '-XX:NewSize' in the parameters (the eden does not reduce below that) however it is not known if this will resolve the issue (memory reclaimed but not accounted for) or if there will be out of memory issues (memory not reclaimed)

  • Iseries Settings for JAVA  (Heap sizes)

I am new to SAP, not to Iseries. The notes 717376 and 990892 give me insight as to what needs chging but not the how to change it.
I want to know if I can set the heap sizes directly in the IFS and How.  Our consultants are not ISeries strong...  I can not get the Config tool to work, and Visual Admin is too
foreign for me to find where the sizing is.
PI takes way to long to start up and my guess is we need initial heapsize to be set and max increased.
    thank you

    Hi
I am not sure about iSeries but the configuration of parameters in SAP Java stack always affect the Java system performance. The few steps to change parameters are as follows:
Main point is you have to use the configtool only. You cannot use Visual Administrator to change the memory parameters.
Open the ConfigTool ( usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGS<sys nr>/j2ee/configtool file would be configtool.sh)
Then at the left hand pane you would get the Server and Instances (local and global : these are used for the cluster environment; local means that you are logged into the current instance....global means that you want to change the settings for whole of the Java stack)
If you click on them like Instance_<instance number>; right hand side you would get all the parameters where you can change these settings.
    Follow the notes instructions.
It would ask for the restart of the SAP server

  • Need advice for controlling MB size when reducing image size.

I'm downsizing a large batch of images that all need to end up as 1.5 to 2 MB jpegs. All of the images from my camera start at the same MB size in the RAW files, When I export/resize them they come out in varied sizes, in this case from 1.4 MB to 3.8 MB. I seem to have come across something that seems very simple that is kicking my butt. Are any of you aware of a way to control the image file size instead of pixel dimension when downsizing?

Please provide the LR version (i.e. 3.6, 4.1,??) you are using and ALL of the Export settings used for both the single and multiple file (i.e. "batch) Export. Did you use  the exact same settings for both, and did you do anything differently for the sinlge file versus multiple file export? There should be absolutely no difference between the two, unless you changed some settings, or inadvertently used different files. For example, if you shoot raw + JPEG you may have accidently used the JPEG instead of raw for one of the Exports. This may give you slightly different Export file sizes.

trshaner, I have no idea why the files have to be that size, that's just the requirements of the customer. I'm trying to convert from RAW to jpeg.
You need to talk to your customer about this requirement. As dj_page and I have already told you this makes no sense! I think your customer is confusing "open file size" (i.e. camera megapixels) with "actual file size." Using a Canon 5D MKII raw image:
    Camera Megapixels (Mp) = 5,616 x 3,744 = 21.03 Megapixels = 21.03 (Mp) x 3 (RGB) x  x 2 (16 bit data) = 120 MB (126,189,568 bytes)
    1 Megabyte= 1,048,576 bytes
    LR Export File Size
TIFF, ProPhoto RGB, No Compression, 16 bit depth = 120.0 MB
TIFF, ProPhoto RGB, ZIP Compression, 16 bit depth = 101.9 MB (lossless compression)
JPEG, sRGB, 100 Quality  = 13.9 MB (JPEGs are 8 bit depth lossy compression)
JPEG, sRGB, 90 Quality =     7.6 MB (JPEGs are 8 bit depth lossy compression)
JPEG, sRGB, 80 Quality =      4.8 MB (JPEGs are 8 bit depth lossy compression)
ALL of the above image files contain the exact same number of Camera Megapixels (i.e. have the same resolution)!

Corrected TIFF no compression file size.

  • Need explanation for DES/CBC/NoPadding

    Hallo,
    I have the following problem:
when I try do use the encryption mode DES/CBC/NoPadding my program fails to decrypt

    Hi,
In most cases the initialization vectors are wrong when the decryption of the first 8 bytes fails with CBC mode encryption.
    Two suggestions:
    1) Try changing CBC mode to ECB mode (just for testing). If ECB mode works, you know the problem has something to do with the IV.
    2) Ensure that the IV passed to encryption and decryption are identical.

This is telling you that there is not enough memory for the heap size you've specified. Increasing the heap size makes this worse, not better. You need more physical memory.

  • Overriding the default heap size of 64mb

I run the java program on my pc on windows xp
I need to increase the heap size, currently I launch the jar file using a batch file, the contents of the batch file are:
    java -Xms64m -Xmx512m -jar Lines.jar
I have set the min and max heap size and when I click on the .bat file it launches the jar file with tose heap settings
But I do not want to launch the jar file in this way(I don't want to use a batch file), is there anyway to override the default heap size for the java program to 512mb so that every time I launch the jar file the heap size is 512mb??

you should be able to pass the java heap options when starting the container:
    -Xmx1024M
So if you are starting the 10.1.3 container from a Windoz command file you could use:
    setlocal
    @echo off
    set ORACLE_HOME=C:/Programs/oc4j-10.1.3
    set JAVA_HOME=C:/Progra~1/Java/jdk1.5.0_07
    set J2EE_HOME=%ORACLE_HOME%/j2ee/home
    %JAVA_HOME%/bin/java.exe -Xmx1024M -jar %J2EE_HOME%oc4j.jar

  • How do define the limit of the max heap size?

    Hi All,
I would like to know what should be the limit of the JVM max heap size.
What will happen if we will not define it?
What is the purpose of defining it from the technical point of view?
    Thanks
    Edited by: Anna78 on Jul 31, 2008 12:36 PM

Defining a max heap space too large can have the following effect:
If you create new objects, the VM may decide it is not worth getting rid of garbage-collectable ones, as there
is still plenty of space between the current heap size and the max allowed. The result will be that the
application will run faster and will consume more memory than it really needs.
If the heap size is too small, but still sufficient, the application will do a lot of garbage-collection and therefore
run slower. On the other hand, it will stay inside the tight space it has been allowed to use.
The speed difference may or may not be noticeable, while the difference between 256M and 512M may
or may not matter on today's computers.

  • Java heap size settings - Cant find the path in Registry.

    Hello All,
I am trying to check Java Heap size for my planning. I was asked to check the Java heap size setting in the below path
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/HYPERION SOLUTIONS/HYPERION PLANNING/HYPERION S9PLANNING/JVM OPTIONS.
but when I checked, I dont see that options in my registry, I have the below mentioned path.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/HYPERION SOLUTIONS/HYPERION PLANNING/OFFLINE
and it doesnt show any jvm options.
Please advice where can i check for Java heap sizes.
    Thanks,

It can depend on version, an example is - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_install_11121/ch07s01s01.html

  • Maximum heap size for 64bit JVM

    Hi,
I am trying to set the maximum heap size for a java process in a 64bit JVM . I am not able to set more then 3G
    command line config:
    java -Xms64m -Xmx3g -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=8000 com.superpages.puboptions.CampaignFeedStarter >> publisher.out 2>&1 &
    Hardware / software configs
    *$uname -a*
    SunOS labsbear 5.9 Generic_122300-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440
    *16GB total physical memory*
    *4 processor machine*
    *64 bit JVM*
    JDK1.6
where is this limitation coming from. How to set the heap size to 6g.
    Thanks for your time
    Meena

You need to use the -d64 switch to request the 64-bit JVM. E.g.,$ java -showversion -Xmx6g HelloWorld
    Invalid maximum heap size: -Xmx6g
The specified size exceeds the maximum representable size.
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
    $ java -showversion -d64 -Xmx6g HelloWorld
    java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode)

  • How to increase Memory and Java Heap Size for Content Server

    Hi,
My content server is processing requests very slowly. Over performance is not good. I have 2 GB of RAM any idea what files I can modify to increase the Java Heap Size for the Content Server. If I increase the RAM to 4 or 6 GB where do I need to make changes for the Java Heap Size and what are the recommended values. I just have Content Server Running on the linux box. Or how do I assign more memory to the user that owns the content server install.

  • Any way to increase the default Heap size for all Java VMs in Solaris 8

    Hello,
I have a java product that deals with large databases under Solaris 8. It is a jar file, started by a cron job every night. Some nights it will fail because it runs out of Heap memory depending on the amount of records it has to deal with. I know that I could increase the java VM heap size with "java -jar -mx YY JARFILE" command but I have other java products that are showing the same behavior, and I would like to correct them all in one shot if possible.
What I would like to do is find a system or configuration parameter that forces all Java VMs to use a larger MAX Heap size than the default 16M specified in the Man page for Java. Is there a way to accomplish that?
    TIA
    Maizo

You could always download the source and modify it.
