Need fix for db file sequential read
Hi all,
My db is 10.2.0.3.0 on windows. One of our query is very slow. When I checked for the reason from v$session the wait event is db file sequential read. Generated ash report and checked. Report listed one file id(p1), block id(p2), and number of blocks -1(p3). And other objects in the top objects. So how u can fix this now. Does I need to pin the block in the buffer cache..? Or does I need to to pin that complete object. Please suggest. I need to fix this.

We was having standby database and we performed switch over. and now on the primary database (previously standby) query is running and getting slow. I guess this is reason.

However, extract traces do not appear to show any waits associated with control files. A 10046 trace has been requested but not done as of yet.
Are there any known issues we can test for, or is this expected behavior? Any further tests that could be run?

There is an Oracle internal list you can use. I just sent you email on how to join.
Here's a shot in the dark: I've seen something similar with log sync waits on systems not moving a lot of data (usually a test system) and we're a little eager to get the next piece of data when at the logical end of file. That can be overcome using THREADOPTIONS EOFDELAYMS. Otherwise you'll need to start using the OGG trace commands.

thank you.The simplest way to find it out is using Oracle Enterprise Manager. Just locate the SQL ID for the SQL and run "SQL tuning advisor". This will exactly pinpoint where do you need to create indexes etc. Another option is manually running explain plan for the SQL and finding out which predicate is causing full scans with high i/o

Update Statement Simply hanged but doing db file sequential read
Hi,
Last night we had issue with one of the prod server where we updating one of table which contains large number records in millions.Same identical machine completed in1 hour and other box never completed but doing db file sequential read but in the long ops the last statement it was done 20:16 after that nothing is happening but i ran few trace on that user.

? How do you change default for .pdf files from Reader 6 to reader 9
I cannot change the default for .pdf files from reader 6 to reader 9. Also I cannot remove reader 6. I am running Vista
Normally, completely removing old versions and reinstalling the latest version will reassociate all applicable extensions for the program, but it appears to have failed in your case. There may be something else going on with your machine that is producing this behavior. You probably need to investigate that. But what you can do to make sure the defaults are correct is click on the start orb and select 'Default Programs.' Then select 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program.' From the list of file types, select each of the following in turn: acrobatsecuritysettings, fdf, pdf, pdfxml, pdx, xdp, and xfdf. If its default program is not Adobe Reader, click on the Change Program button and select Acrobat Reader from the list (you may need to expand the lower section to display more programs than it initially provides). If Adobe Reader does not show up in the list, you will have to browse for it. It should be located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10\Reader\AcroRd32.exe or C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 10\Reader\AcroRd32.exe.
This method is safer than manually editing the Root\Classes in the registry. -
Query on dba_free_space ends in wait by event db file sequential read

I gave the query
select tablespace_name,sum(bytes)/1024/1024 from dba_free_space group by tablespace_name and its waiting for ever.
I checked the wait event from v$session and its "db file sequential read".
I put a trace on the session before the running the above query:

JJUnder some circumstances querying the dictionary can be slow, usually because of problems with bad execution plans related to bad statistics, try to gather statistics using dbms_stats.gather_fixed_objects_stats(); it has worked for me before.
You can also read Note 414256.1 Poor Performance For Tablespace Page Display In Grid Control Console which in addition points to a possible problem with the recycle bin.

Log file sequential read and RFS ping/write - among Top 5 event
I have situation here to discuss. In a 3-node RAC setup which is Logical standby DB; one node is showing high CPU utilization around 40~50%. The CPU utilization was less than 20% 10 days back but from 9th oldest day it jumped and consistently shows the double figure. I ran AWR reports on all three nodes and found one node with high CPU utilization and shows below tops events-

On AWR report(file attached) for node= sipd207; we can see that "RFS PING" wait event takes 30% of the waits and "log file sequential read" wait event takes 30% of the waits that occurs in database.
Environment :- (Oracle- 10.2.0.4.0, O/S - AIX .3)
1)other node awr shows "log file sync" - is it due to oversized log buffer?
2)Network wait events can be reduced by tweaking SDU & TDU values based on MDU.
3) Why ARCH processes taking much to archives filled redo logs; is it issue with slow disk I/O?

Query occasionally causes table scans (db file sequential read)
Dear all,
we periodically issue a query on a huge table via an oracle job.
Whenever I invoke the query manually, the response time is good. When I start the periodic job, initially the response times are good as well. After some days, however, the query suddenly takes almost forever.
My vague guess is that for some reason the query suddenly changes the execution plan from using the primary key index to a full table scan (or huge index range scan). Maybe because of some problems with the primary key index (fragmentation? Other?).
- Could it be the case that the execution plan for a query changes (automatically) like this? For what reasons?
- Do you have any hints where to look for further information for analysis? (logs, special event types, ...)?
- Of course, the query was designed having involved indexes in mind. Also, I studied the execution plan and did not find hints for problematic table/range scans.
- It is not a lock contention problem
- When the query "takes forever", there is a "db file sequential read" event in v$session_event for the query with an ever increasing wait time. That's why I guess a (unreasonable) table scan is happening.
Some charachteristics of the table in question:
- ~ 30 Mio rows
- There are only insertions to the table, as well as updates on a single, indexed field. No deletes.
- There is an integer primary key field with an B-tree index.
Charachteristics of the query:
The main structure of the query is very simple and as follows: I select a range of about 100 rows via primary key "id", like:
Select * from TheTable where id>11222300 and id <= 11222400
There are several joins with rather small tables, which make the overall query more complicated.
However, the few (100) rows of the huge table in question should always be fetched using the primary key index, shouldn't it?

For what reasons?Yes possible, One reason is stats of the table has been changed i.e somebody issued dbms_stats. If you are worried about execution plan getting changed then two option 1) Lock the stats 2) Use hint in the query.

Yes theoreitically it should practically we can only say by looking at run time explain plan(through 10053,10046 trace).

Nang.I am still not sure in which direction you are looking for solution.
Is your query performing bad once in a fortnight and next day it is all same again.
I suggest to
1) Check if the data is scanning undo tablespace. I see you mentioned there is lot of inserts, could be that Oracle would be scanning undo tablespace because of delayed clean out.
2) Check if that particular day the number of records are high compared to other day.
Or once it starts performing bad then for next couple of days there is no change in response time.
1) Check if explain plan has been changed?
And what action you take to bring back the response time to normal?

Very high log file sequential read and control file sequential read waits?
I have a 10.2.0.4 database and have 5 streams capture processes running to replicate data to another database. However I am seeing very high
log file sequential read and control file sequential read by the capture procesess. This is causing slowness in the database as the databass is wasting so much time on these wait events. From AWR report

Oracle support hasn't been of much help, other than wasting my 10 days and telling me to try this and try that.
Do you have streams running in your environment, are you experiencing this wait. Have you done anything to resolve these waits..

There is insufficient information in what you have posted to know that your analysis of the situation is correct or anything about your Streams environment.
We don't know what you are replicating. Not size, not volume, not type of capture, not rules, etc.
We don't know the distance over which it is being replicated ... 10 ft. or 10 light years.
We don't have any AWR or ASH data to look at.
etc. etc. etc. If this is what you provided Oracle Support it is no wonder they were unable to help you.
To diagnose this problem, if one exists, requires someone on-site or with a very substantial body of data which you have not provided. The first step is to fill in the answers to all of the obvious first level questions. Then we will likely come back with a second level of questioning.
But when you do ... do not post here. Your questions are not "Database General" they are specific to Streams and there is a Streams forum specifically for them.

Optimize long execution time due to 'db file sequential read'

I have got a query that takes long execution time. Most of the time is due to 'db file sequential read'. The query is:

A sequential read is a single-block read. Single block I/Os are usually the result of using indexes.
A db file scattered read issues a scattered read to read the data into multiple discontinuous memory locations. A scattered read is usually a multiblock read. It can occur for a fast full scan (of an index) in addition to a full table scan.

Here's a fix for uploaded files that won't play.
Is this you? You've found a lot of files were uploaded, instead of matched. Some of those files might even be on albums where other tracks matched. Sure you want them ALL to match, but meantime, it would be nice if uploaded files would actually play! Sure, you can see their names, track durations, etc. but if you try to play them directly, nothing happens and if you try to play an album through, when it gets to an uploaded track, it stalls or skips past it. You've checked the file type and it's an AAC so you figure it can't be a file encoding incompatibility problem and besides, whatever the file type, Apple is red-flagging anything incompatible, tells you it's ineligible, right?
Guess Again - not all AAC files are produced with the same encoder and some of them, while they'll get past Apple's eligibile/ineligible screening process, probably shouldn't.
I routinely record vinyl using Audacity and at various times I've used different encoders (not that I knew it until now). As a result of checking which uploaded files play and which do not, I'm pretty confident of the following. While some AAC files created outside of iTunes might work, those encoded using Lavf52.36.0 will not. Neither will files encoded using Lavf52.64.2. There may be others.
So what's the fix? The same one recommended for getting files flagged by Apple as ineligible to pass muster. You need to make an AAC copy in iTunes and swap that for the uploaded files that won't play.
Here are the steps I use to get it done. You may be able to streamline the process though.
(1) Turn off wi-fi to prevent iTunes Match from attempting to match any new files until you're good and ready. If you don't to this, you may end up with files you've just created being flagged as duplicates.
(2) Select all files in an album that has some bad uploaded files. Select Advanced > Create AAC Version. (NOTE: I don't bother trying to separate uploaded from matched, just too much hassle.)
(3) Select one of the files, so you can File > Reveal In Finder. Generally this will get you to the album folder that includes both sets of tracks. The ones you just created will have a "1" in the file name.
(4) Create a folder on the desktop and move all the newly created files to it. Delete the "1" from the file names. Name the folder based on album title.
(5) In iTunes, delete the listings for the newly created files.
(6) Turn on wi-fi and wait for iCloud to reconnect. Watch the cloud icon - it'll tell you.
(7) Delete the album from iTunes (You're now getting rid of the copy that was originally uploaded, so be sure you've really got the new AAC files handy to replace them with). Note you will see an option to delete from iCloud too. Check it. You want these files GONE!
(8) Select Store > Update iTunes Match. If you do a search for the album from an iCloud enabled iOS device (I use Apple TV) after the update is completed, you shouldn't be able to find the album.
(9) Select File > Add To Library and go get the folder of tunes you created.
(10) Run Update iTunes Match again.
(11) Watch the iTunes progress bar. Once the matching process has checked to see if you've added anything to your library, you'll see fresh copies of your songs uploading.
(12) As another means of confirmation, once several of the songs have uploaded, do an iOS device search for the album. You should be able to get the album to appear before the upload is complete. You may have to back out of the search and back in to get it to work, but chances are when you first see the album, the song titles will all be grayed out. Once the update is complete, give it a minute and everything should become available to you.
(13) Pick a track that wouldn't play before and watch to see if the timer starts to move, followed by music! It is now time to do a little happy dance.
I know this is a far cry from figuring out what it takes to get songs that should match to actually do so, but that's a whole different ball of wax.Thanks this was useful. I have been ripping my audiobooks and I was finding that they would get uploaded to iCloud in the process, which in itself was fine, but then iTunes would not let me change the media type to Audiobook, which is annoying as it effects how iTunes treats the media. Like showing you the skip back 10 seconds button.
The general outline here helped me work around the issue and change the media type before the media was re-uploaded to iCloud.
