Need help casting shadows

New to using AE CS4...I have a 3d scene (screen shot below) and want to cast shadows off the video section like have done with the still image. How do I do this? I would like to have different 3d objects moving in and out, with the sections of video hitting them and falling off as they move by. Like I said I am new to AE (2 weeks) and may be moving to quick before I learn the basics!
Thanks,
Mark

Assuming your still image has a shadow being cast by your light (rather than a fake shadow as mentioned in the post above) you simply need to enable shadow casting for your footage layer.
Select the footage layer, press AA to reveal Material Properties, set Casts Shadows to On.
The footage layer will, of course, need to be positioned correctly within your 3D environment for the shadow to appear correctly.

The basic sliders disappeared. Including the Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Clarity and Vibrance Sliders are no longer available. I need help to get them back on the program.
I can't figure out where the sliders went and how to put them back on. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

In Lightroom, go to the Window menu, select Panels, select Basic

• Mirror, Cast Shadow,(Motion) Blur, Extrude Layer Styles

Layer styles are useful because of their parametric and their non-destructive natures.
I'd like to suggest new layer styles, of commonly used effects, that would help to automate lenghty tasks.
Mirror would create a reflection of the layer that fades with distance, it is commonly used in the products pictures of a famous computer /music player/phone manufacturer, and is even available as a word art in Powerpoint! Another common name for that effect is "wet floor".
Proposed settings would be to be able to select the direction (bottom by default), the angle of the reflection, the starting point of the reflection (so that the object/layer can appear to be floating in the air above the reflecting surface), the distance/curve of the fade, maybe an option to desaturate, lighten/darken, and/or blur with distance) There could also be an option to increase/decrease the width of the reflection. An additional eye candy would be to be able to distort the shadow with a map, for effects like waves, but we are way over in the cliché mode...
Cast Shadow would be very similar to the mirror effect, and would simulate the shadow casted by a light placed behind the object/layer. It would use most of the controls found on the Mirror layer style, or it would be available when one desaturates the mirror effect.
Motion Blur would create the effect of a displacement of the layer. It should be able to create the lenght of the blur, a start fade (so that the whole object/layer is not blurred, but only part of it). The fade could have two settings: flat or parametric. Flat would blur based on a gradient, while parametric would fade the blur according to a fixed distance to the edges of the layer. It would be very useful to be able to create a path that the blur would follow, but I'm not sure about the best interface: on image, or in a dedicated widget.
Blur would be a simple blurring routine, that would alleviate the need to create smart objects, and use smart filters.
Extrude could be the equivalent of creating step and repeat copies of a layer/object. It would create nudged copies of the layer simulating a third axis.
Controls would be: angle, distance, fade, where the copies become desaturated, blurred, and/or would have lower opacities.
I hope that other users will chime in with proposed refinements, or additional (useful and feasible) layer styles they'd like to see.

I like these Pierre.
Also
Noise - at the moment its possible to use Pattern Overlay and generate patterns to put grain texture and noise into layers. But a layer style with the correct parameters, grain size, blur, intensity, saturation (Saturation applies to the saturation of the noise not the image), would be useful.
This brings me back to feature request made about a year or so ago, that it woud be possible to sample overall image 'noise'or 'grain' and to apply this to areas. It would use image analysis tecniques, although Im not sure yet what these would be - to create an 'average' grain structure for the existing image (probably the base layer but this could be redefined). This would mean that any bad retouching (blurring or image softening) could be more easily salvaged, and would also mean that its easy to do much more destructive editing, more freely on an image than before, without the worry of banding on output.
If I think of any others I'll post them

• Add cast shadow to person?

Motion 3
FCS 2
Rephrasing (more succinctly) an unanswered question from a while back:
Is it possible to add a cast shadow to a chromakeyed person?
(1) Is there a trick or workaround to do this within Motion?
(2) Is there a plug-in? Or, a separate program that does this?
I've searched the forums and Googled the web, but not having much luck. I appreciate any help or direction.
Thank you!

1) Duplicate the layer
2) Use the Channel Swap filter to switch all channels to Alpha - this will make your keyed subject all white
3) Add an Invert filter - this will make it all black - your shadow
4) Right-click and select the Four Corner tool, distort to tast
5) Blur as needed (you might want to group the layer and blur the group)
6) You can duplicate this whole thing, remove the blur from the original, then use an image mask with a gradient to have the blur fall off as the shadow gets closer to the subject.

Hi Everyone,
THANKS FOR POSTING THE REPLIES FOR MY LAST THREAD. THAT REALLY HELPED. I CAME BACK AGAIN BECAUSE I NEED HELP FROM THIS FORUM IN REDUING THE LENGTH OF MY QUERY WHICH I HAD GIVEN BELOW. i DIDN'T HAD THE CHOICE OF ATTACHING A FILE OF MY DATA HERE.ITS VERY HUGE DATA SO I AM NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE ATLEAST SAMPLE DATA BECAUSE THE COLUMNS ARE OVERLAPPING IF I AM PASTING THE DATA HERE. I HOPE IT WILL BE UNDERSTANDABLE. THE QUERY WHICH I WROTE IS TOO LONG AND TAKING HOURS TOGETHER TO RUN AND DISPLAY RESULT. IT WOULD BE A GREAT FAVOUR TO ME IF ANYONE CAN REDUCE THE LINES IN MY QUERY AND MAKE IT RUN FAST....PLEASE I WAS NOT KNOWING THE WAY HOW TO MAKE IT SHORT. IT HAS MANY LOGICS IN IT... :? PLEASE SUGGEST ME IF THERE IS ANY OPTION FOR ATTACHING A FILE SO THAT I CAN SEND MY SAMPLE DATA...

• I need help please if you can aid me in my quest to write this code

I am trying really hard to accomplish this and my head hurts from trying mulitple ideas on the right code.A lottery requires that you select six different numbers from the integers 1 to 49. Write a Java program that will do this for you and generate five sets of six numbers as a result.
Details:
For generating random numbers you can use the random() static method of class Math. It returns a double so you will need to cast it as an integer. If you set the range to 49, you can generate a random number between 1 and 49 through:
number = (int) ( range * Math.random() ) + 1;
Note that you need 5 sets of numbers and in each set you have should have six different numbers. There should not be duplicate numbers within each set. Of course the same number can occur in multiple sets, but within the same set of 6 numbers it should only occur once, if at all.
Here is an example of a valid set of numbers: 5, 41, 3, 9, 22, 30
Here is an example of an invalid set of numbers: 15, 8, 19, 33, 8, 21
It is invalid because the number 8 appears twice.
This is the dilema the code I have so far (I know it is not much) is import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Random;
public class Lottery
public static void main(String[] args)
int[] numbers = new int[6];
number = (int) (range 49 Math.random() ) + 1;
am I on the right track totally wrong or???? Please help me and god bless

• Still need help with case sensitive strings

Hello guy! Sorry to trouble you with the same problem again,
but i still need help!
"I am trying to create a scrypt that will compare a String
with an editable text that the user should type to match that
String. I was able to do that, but the problem is that is not case
sensitive, even with the adobe help telling me that strings are
case sensitive. Do you guys know how to make that comparison match
only if all the field has the right upper and lower case letters?
on exitframe
if field "t:texto1" = "Residencial Serra Verde"then
go to next
end if
end
|----> thats the one Im using!"
There were 2 replys but both of them didnt work, and the
second one even made the director crash, corrupting even previously
files that had nothing to do with the initial problem..
first solution given --
If you put each item that you are comparing into a list, it
magically
makes it case sensitive. Just put list brackets around each
item.
on exitframe
if [field "t:texto1"] = ["Residencial Serra Verde"] then
go to next
end if
end
Second solution given--
The = operator is not case-sensitive when used on strings,
but the < and > operators are case-sensitive.
So another way to do this is to check if the string is
neither greater than nor less than the target string:
vExpected = "Residencial Serra Verde"
vInput = field "t:texto 1"
if vExpected < vInput then
-- ignore
else if vExpected > vInput then
-- ignore
else
-- vExpected is a case-sensitive match for vInput
go next
end if
So any new solutions??
Thanks in advance!!
joao rsm

The first solution does in fact work and is probably the most
efficient way
of doing it. You can verify that it works by starting with a
new director
movie and adding a field named "t:texto1" into the cast with
the text
"Residencial Serra Verde" in the field. Next type the
following command in
the message window and press Enter
put [field "t:texto1"] = ["Residencial Serra Verde"]
You will see it return 1 which means True. Next, make the R
in the field
lower case and execute the command in the message window, it
will return 0
(true).
Now that you know this works, you need to dig deeper in your
code to find
what the problem is. Any more info you can supply?

• LIGHT DOESN'T CAST SHADOWS.

hi i have a few layers, a camera, and an ambient light. i turn cast shadows on in every layer but it doesn't do anything. i did the same thing a long time ago on another video and it worked, but that was the one and only time it did, what am i doing wrong?

> i turn cast shadows on in every layer but it doesn't do anything.
the light must also be set to cast shadows but Ko is correct, ambient lights do not have that option.
the online help system will explain it all to you.
Double-click a light layer in the Timeline panel or select the layer and choose Layer > Light Settings.Casts Shadows Specifies whether the light source causes a layer to cast a shadow. The Accepts Shadows material option must be On for a layer to receive a shadow; this is the default. The Casts Shadows material option must be On for a layer to cast shadows; this is not the default.Light Type Parallel emits directional, unconstrained light from an infinitely distant source. Spot emits light from a source that is constrained by a cone, like the spotlight used in stage productions. Point emits unconstrained omnidirectional light, like the rays from a bare light bulb. Ambient creates light that has no source but rather contributes to the overall brightness of a scene and casts no shadows.

• Need help with calling method

I'm new to Java, trying to pass a required class so I can graduate this semester, and I need help figuring out what is wrong with the code below. My assignment is to create a program to convert celsius to fahrenheit and vice versa using Scanner for input. The program must contain 3 methods - main, convert F to C, method, and convert C to F method. Requirements of the conversion methods are one parameter which is an int representing temp, return an int representing calculated temp after doing appropriate calculation, should not display info to user, and should not take in info from user.
The main method is required to ask the user to input a 1 for converting F to C, 2 for C to F, and 3 to end the program. It must include a while loop that loops until the user enters a 3, ask the user to enter a temp, call the appropriate method to do the conversion, and display the results. I'm having trouble calling the conversion methods and keep getting the following 2 compiler errors:
cannot find symbol
symbol : method farenheitToCelsius(int)
location: class WondaPavoneTempConverter
int celsius = farenheitToCelsius(intTemp);
^
cannot find symbol
symbol : method celsiusToFarenheit(int)
location: class WondaPavoneTempConverter
int farenheit = celsiusToFarenheit(intTemp);
The code is as follows:
public static void main(String[] args) {
// Create a scanner
Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);
// Prompt the user to enter a temperature
System.out.println("Enter the temperature you wish to convert as a whole number: ");
int intTemp = scanner.nextInt();
System.out.println("You entered " + intTemp + " degrees.");
// Prompt the user to enter "1" to convert to Celsius, "2" to convert to
// Farenheit, or "3" to exit the program
System.out.println("Enter 1 to convert to Celsius, 2 to convert to Farenheit, or 3 to exit.");
int intConvert = scanner.nextInt();
// Convert temperature to Celsius or Farenheit
int celsius = farenheitToCelsius(intTemp);
int farenheit = celsiusToFarenheit(intTemp);
while (intConvert >= 0) {
// Convert to Celsius
if (intConvert == 1) {
System.out.println("Celsius is " + celsius + " degrees.");
// Convert to Farenheit
else if (intConvert == 2) {
System.out.println("Farenheit is " + farenheit + " degrees.");
// Exit program
else if (intConvert == 3) {
break;
else {
System.out.println("The number you entered is invalid. Please enter 1, 2, or 3.");
//Method to convert Celsius to Farenheit
public static int celsiusToFahrenheit(int cTemp) {
return (9 / 5) * (cTemp + 32);
//Method to convert Farenheit to Celsius
public static int fahrenheitToCelsius(int fTemp) {
return (5 / 9) * (fTemp - 32);
I readily admit I'm a complete dunce when it comes to programming - digital media is my area of expertise. Can anyone point me in the right direction? This assignment is due very soon. Thanks.

1) consider using a boolean variable in the while statement and converting it to true if the input is good.
while (inputNotValid)
}2) put the code to get the input within the while loop. Try your code right now and enter the number 30 when your menu requests for input and you'll see the infinite loop.... and why you need to request input within the loop.
3) Fix your equations. You are gonig to have to do some double calcs, even if you convert it back to int for the method return. Otherwise the results are just plain wrong. As a good test, put in the numbers -40, 0, 32, 100, and 212. Are the results as expected? (-40 is the only temp that is the same for both cent and fahr). I recommend doing double calcs and then casting the result to int in the return. for example:
int a = (int) (20 + 42.0 / 3); // the 42.0 forces the compiler to do double calc.4) One of your equations may still be plain wrong even with this fix. Again, run the test numbers and see.
5) Also, when posting your code, please use code tags so that your code will be well-formatted and readable. To do this, either use the "code" button at the top of the forum Message editor or place the tag
at the top of your block of code and the tag
at the bottom, like so:
// your code block goes here.
• Need help understanding syntax

Hi,
I need some help to understand the following syntax .
PPRAMImpl am = (PPRAMImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean); What is this PPARAMImpl?
I know "am " is a variable . And with pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean) we are trying to get the AM name for that page, then why do we need to add (PPARAMImpl) before pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean) ?
For example in plsql , apps.testpkg.mainproc(param1,param2)
means
schema.packagename.procedurename(parameter1,parameter2).
So can you explain "PPRAMImpl am = (PPRAMImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean)" in that manner?
pageContext.getParameter(EVENT_PARAM))
What is this ?
What are the possible values for EVENT_PARAM ? And by the way , I need help on setting a default value for one of my search parameters in a search region .
Correct me If I am wrong, this is what I thought
1. EOImpl has setters and getters for that attribute. So call the setter method in controller and set the value , if this is right then I don't know how to right the code ,can you give me some sample code ?
or
2. get the view object name and then set the value for that . like viewobject.setattribute('att name',att value'),if this is right then I don't know how to right the code ,can you give me some sample code ?
Thanks
Sri.

Hi,
No. These are not equal.
pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean) return AM of type OAApplicationModule.
It would be fine if your variable am, is of type OAApplicationModule:
OAApplicationModule am = pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean) // this would be fine.
But as you are using of type PPRAMImpl, you must have to type-cast that externally using:
PPRAMImpl am = (PPRAMImpl)pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
If you are still not clear, then refer any java book or google for internal & external type-casting in java.

• Need help to develop Pythagoras theorem-

Hi i need help to develop proofs 2,3,4
of pythagoras theorems in java as demonstrations
These are applets can anyone help me with it or give me an idea of how to go about developing it -
the site is the following
http://www.uni-koeln.de/ew-fak/Mathe/Projekte/VisuPro/pythagoras/pythagoras.html
then double click on the screen to make it start

Pardon my ASCII art, but I've always liked the following, simple, geometric proof:
a                   b
---------------------------------------+
|       |                                |
a|   I   |              II                |
|       |                                |
---------------------------------------+
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
b|  IV   |              III               |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
|       |                                |
---------------------------------------+It almost goes without saying that I+II+III+IV == (a+b)^2, and II == IV == a*b,
I == a*a and III == b*b, showing that (a+b)^2 == a^2+a*b+a*b+b^2.
I hope the following sketch makes sense, stand back, ASCII art alert again: a b
---------------------------------------+
|               .             VI         |
|     .                 .                |a
| V                               .      |
|                                        +
|                                        |
|   .                                    |
b|                                     .  |
|                                        |
|                  IX                    |
| .                                      |
|                                    .   |b
|                                        |
+                                        |
|      .                                 |
a|               .                  . VII |
|  VIII                   .              |
---------------------------------------+
a bThe total area equals (a+b)^2 again and equals the sum of the smaller areas:
(a+b)^2 == V+VI+VII+VIII+IX. Let area IX be c^2 for whatever c may be.
V+VII == VI+VIII == a*b, so a^2+b^2+2*ab= c^2+2*a*b; IOW a^2+b^2 == c^2
Given this fundamental result, the others can easily be derived from this one,
or did I answer a question you didn't ask?
kind regards,
Jos

Audio and video are not currently support on Adobe Reader. :-<
You need to buy a PDF reader that supports them. My suggestion is PDF Expert from Readdle ($US 9.99)
