Need help coding Coloring Book App. in AS3

I am working on a project for school and I'm having a lot of trouble at the moment. I can't seem to figure out exactly how to start coding for a coloring book type app. I've read through about 6 different tutorials for this type of project and I can't seem to get anything to work for me.
I've drawn out the outline of the image I want to be colorable, and converted the outline into a symbol. I've also made each seperate colorable area it's own symbol as well. In total I have 67 different colorable areas + the outline. I've created a pallete of colors for the user to select from as well.
When it comes to actually coding for all of this to work I am completely lost. If anyone could help me get started and point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it!

I'm also working on a coloring book app. I have everything working for assigning the colors to the shapes, but I can't seem to access the color assigned to the shape. I"m trying to use an if statement to check the colors of the shapes, so if the colors assigned are the ones that I want them to be a button will be made visible to move to the next page. It looks like this:
var colorChanger: = new ColorTransform();
Red_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, turnRed);
function turnRed(e:Event):void
     colorChanger.color = 0xff0000;
myShape.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, shapeColor);
function shapeColor(e:Event):void
     myShape.transform.ColorTransform = colorChanger;
if(myShape.color == 0xff0000)
     Next_btn.visible = true;
I also tried creating a second colortransform variable and putting it in the shapecolor function to hold the same color that is applied to the shape:

     myShape.transform.ColorTransform = colorChanger;
     otherColorVar.color = colorChanger;
if(otherColorVar == 0xff0000)
     Next_btn.visible = true;
But nothing I do seems to work. No matter how I try to set up the if statement, I can't make the next button visible. Any advice?
