Need help with java assignment dealing with for loops...

Hi there. I'm a beginner to java programming and I'm having a lot of difficulty.
I am trying to do a lab for class right now, and I really don't even know where to begin and to make things worse, someone in my class lost the copies of the class book so I'm extra confused.
I need to write a method to print a "line" of characters to the screen. The professor said that the method should consume both the character to print (this parameter can be of type char or of type String) and the number of the character to print. The method should use System.out.print().
e.g. if the method is called printLine, then
printLine(5,'*');
printLine(4,'j');
should print:
*****jjjj
I'd really appreciate any help possible! Thank you.

nevermind. i figured it out.

  • Need help with the loop

    I'm a beginner. I'm trying to get this output
    Initial number of stars:
    7
    Here's my program. What's wrong with it? Please help
    import java.io.*;
    class starWedge
    public static void main (String[] args ) throws IOException
    int numStars; // the number of stars
    int row ; // current row number
    int star; // the number of stars in this row so far
    BufferedReader userin = new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader(System.in));
    String inputData;
    // collect input data from user
    System.out.println( "Initial number of stars:" );
    inputData = userin.readLine();
    numStars = Integer.parseInt( inputData );
    row = 1;
    while ( row <= numStars )
    star = 1;
    star = numStars - star;
    System.out.print("*");
    star = star + 1;
    System.out.println(); // end each line
    row = row + 1;

    Okay the one thing that I see immediately is that your while loop never actully exits. Not once. Why? Well simple your exit condition is the row <= numStars, yet nither numStars nor row actually change their values within the loop. In short row always equals 1 and thus never is equal to greater than numStars and the while loop does not terminate.
    Second thing is that your star drawing logic is not correct. Meaning you have not told to draw the specific number of stars in one given line. For starters the System.out.println() command should be in the loop not outside it. For your purposes a for-loop nested within a while-loop is much better.
    If you think you know what's wrong your program than read no further and go try it on your own. But if you still have no clue below is my modification of your code that actually produces the pattern you want, it might provide you with more hints.
    import java.io.*;
    class starWedge{
    public static void main (String[] args ) throws IOException{
         int numStars; // the number of stars
         int row ; // current row number
         int star; // the number of stars in this row so far
         BufferedReader userin = new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader(System.in));
         String inputData;
         // collect input data from user
         System.out.println( "Initial number of stars:" );
         inputData = userin.readLine();
         numStars = Integer.parseInt( inputData );
         row = 1;
         while (numStars > 0){
         for(star = 1; star<=numStars; star++){
              System.out.print("*");
         numStars = numStars - 1;
         System.out.println(); // end each line
    }

  • Need help with while loop format

    I'm building a form - everything works but I would like to change the way the data is output into the table.
    In other scripting languages, like PHP, you had 2 different ways of dealing with a loop:
    <?
    do while xyz
    do something here
    ?>
    - OR -
    <? do while xyz:?>
    do something here
    <?end while ?>
    I would like to do something similar to the 2nd example in .jsp but I'm not sure of the format or how to stop the loop. From the tutorial, I'm using
    <%
    while(SQLResult.next())
    UId = SQLResult.getString("uid");
    FName = SQLResult.getString("fname");
    LName = SQLResult.getString("lname");
    out.println("<tr><td>" + UId + "</td><td>" + FName + "</td><td>" + LName
    + "</td></tr>");
    %>
    Could anyone point me in the right direction? I'd prefer it if I didn't have to build the table like this if I don't have to but haven't found anything anywhere telling me otherwise.
    Thanks so much.
    Bob

    Sorry - the answer was in JSP:Java Server Pages by Barry Burd. I had just gotten the output format wrong.

  • Help with for loop and remove-item command

    Hi all here is the code so far
    $a = Get-Content C:\Users\cody-horton\Desktop\test.txt
    for($i=0;$i -lt $a.Length;$i++){
    #$temp = [int32]::Parse($a[$i])
    Remove-Item '\\ceit2551202x0'$a[$i]'\C$\Program Files\MATLAB\R2013a\*' -Force
    I have a text file with a few number in it that i want to get. They are in the array $a but I'm getting an error that says a positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '53' (it does this for all the numbers in the array.) I know in java you
    could have something like this   string + int + string.
    I'm not sure what to do I also tried to parse it with no luck. Thanks any help is appreciated.

    Your issue is with the path for Remove-Item, it is not complete so try this
    Remove-Item "\\ceit2551202x0$($a[$i])\C$\Program Files\MATLAB\R2013a\*" -Force
    I am unable to test, so I would add the -WhatIf switch to make sure it outputs what you expect

  • Need help with nested loop (c:forEach) tags. Can I break from inner loop?

    Hi all, I have this annoying problem and I am looking for any suggestions.
    I have 2 select boxes. One is for all available users, and second - for selected users (designated as admins). The list of all users is available in a collection (2 properties userId and userName displayed in the code below). The list of admins contains only userId (as strings).
    I have no problem with populating selected users (admins) list, reusing pretty much the same logic below, but I cannot find a way to break out from the nested loop once the match is found, to avoid repetitions leading to incorrect display of results.
    <select name=available>
    <c:forEach items="${users}" var="user" varStatus="outer">
        <c:forEach items="${adminIds}" var="adminId" varStatus="inner">
            <c:if test="${user.userId!=adminId">

  • Need help with while loops

    Hello let me first explain what im trying to achive:
    I want a moving square that you control with the arrow keys on the keyboard. It has to be smooth ie able to move fast without looking like its jumping and it has to be able to move diagonaly aswell. Think of that arcade game Raiden ...you know the birds-eye view plane flying game...another thing! I'd prefer if it didnt use timers - i made one already using 4 timers and it works great but 4 timers is a little extreme - SO NO TIMERS !
    I was thinking while loops, but i cant seem to get it working. I dont want to put in all the code so ill just say that I have 4 booleans: up, down, left right and the following code:
    public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) {
    if (e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_UP) {
    up = true;
    if (e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) {
    down = true;
    if (e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) {
    left = true;
    if (e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT) {
    right = true;
    repaint();
    For the KeyReleased part i have the same as above exept it sets the booleans to false.
    Soooo in theory if i set up a while loop like this (using the up direction as an example) :
    while (up == true) {
    [move square up]
    So therefore when i press and hold the up arrow the loop will keep going untill i realease it right? WRONG ! it just keeps repeating indefinatly and it doesnt even do the " [move square up] " bit. I put a System.out.print in the loop to test and it kept printing out the message but it still didnt do the actual " [move square up] " bit.
    Im not sure if im putting the while loop in the right place either....If anyone has any idea on how to use while loops in this way please heeeelp ! Its so annoying because it just doesnt work ive tried so many ways...
    any help would be greatly apreciated !!!!

    Maybe you want something like this? You have to pause during the loop to allow for other events to happen, like if y ou release a key or whatever.
    while( true )
       if( up ) moveUp();
       else if( down ) moveDown();
       if( left ) moveLeft();
       else if( right ) moveRight();
       try
          Thread.currentThread().sleep(10);
       catch( InterruptedException e )
          System.out.println( "Thread interrupted!");
    }

  • Need help with while loop and shift registers

    I have a large data set and need to read in the data at maybe 200 samples at a time, process these samples through my VI, and have it append and concatenate a separate lvm file.  The part where I am confused is the shift registers. How do I limit the number of samples read in an iteration? How do I get the while loop to stop when all the data are read in?
    I've attached my diagram, maybe there is something wrong with my technique?
    Solved!

    This will give you an idea.  There are plenty of other (probably more efficient) methods.  This is a basic, quick and dirty solution to help you grasp the overall concept.

  • Need help with infinite loop in recovery mode in Creative Zen 20

    hi,
    I'm having this problem with my Creative Zen 20 GB:
    When I turned it on, it goes immediately to the rescue/recovery mode. Not sure why. Will do that even when I reset the device.
    So, I selected cleanup. After cleanup, it remained showing the menu of the recovery mode. I selected reboot. After reboot, it went back to the rescue/recovery mode. And it goes on and on like an infinite loop.
    Finally, I decided to do a formatAll. Again, it remained in the recovery mode menu after the formatAll action. After reboot, it again went back to the rescue/recovery mode.
    I have never updated the firmware. So, I thought maybe that will help. However, when I connected the device to my PC, the device went to rescue/recovery mode and the PC could not detect the device connected via USB. In short, I am currently not able to do anything at all with the device except charging it.
    Would appreciate help/advise.
    Tks in advance.

    What library are you loading? After you have run that reload os option, you need to connect the player to the computer and run the firmware update software. If you haven't download that, you can go to the download section and download it. If all else fail, the player is probably faulty and you would need to get in contact with Customer Support then.

  • Need help with while loop

    Hi,
    I'm running a while loop to run through some results of a search. Anyway I know how to list the strings but my last item is a JComboBox (drop down box.) How do I go about changing that so its right for a drop down box. Its the one with questions marks in the code below.
            while (srs.next())
            //Get the values for each field in this row
            String projectName = srs.getString("PROJECT_NAME");
            System.out.println("Project Name = " + projectName );
            String projectOfficier = srs.getString("PROJECT_OFFICER");
            System.out.println("Project Officer = " + projectOfficier );
            String projectDescription = srs.getString("PROJECT_OFFICER");
            System.out.println("Project Description = " + projectDescription );
            String paymentSchedule = srs.getString("PAYMENT_SCHEDULE");
            System.out.println("Payment Schedule = " + paymentSchedule );
            String banksInvestment = srs.getString("BANKS_INVESTMENT");
            System.out.println("Banks Investment = " + banksInvestment );
        ?   String paymentsMade = srs.getString("PAYMENTS_MADE");
        ?   System.out.println("Payments Made = " + paymentsMade );Thanks.

    Yeah the Payments Made part is a JComboBox with 3 so called strings inside it. I wanna know instead of srs.getString what should I put in to replace String to get the results from a JComboBox?

    Hi I am having a very very difficult time. for thos that have it I'm using the Intro to Java Programming 6th Edition by Y.Daniel Liang Book. I am on page 124 Ch 4 Problem 4.18

    123
    1234
    12345
    123456

    I know you've already been answered, but just a bit more...
    if((orderType != 'g') || (orderType != 'w'))That would always be true. All characters are either not equal to 'g' or not equal to 'w'.
    'x' : neither 'g' nor 'w'. Evaluates to true.
    'g' : not 'w', still evaluates to true.
    'w': not 'g', still evaluates to true.

    Now my question is this: How can I restrict the user to only enter 'letters' (and spaces of course) but allow NO numbers for his/her surname??You cannot restrict the user. It is a sad fact in programming that the worst bug always sits in front of the Computer.
    What you could do is checking the input string for numbers. If it contains numbers, just reprompt for the Name.
    AND you might want to ask yourself why the heck a calculator needs to know the users Name.

  • Im DROWNING! need help with a simple java assignment! plz someone help me!

    i need help with my java assignment, with validating a sin number. easy for must who know java. im drowning... please help!

    You will need to store each digit of the social insurance number in a field of its own. To validate the entry you will:
    1. Multiply the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th digit by 2.
    2. If the product of any of the four multiplications result in a value greater than 9, add the two resulting digits together to yield a single-digit response. For example 6 * 2 = 12, so you would add the 1 and the 2 to get a result of 3.
    3. Add these four calculated values together, along with the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th digits of the original number.
    4. Subtract this sum from the next highest multiple of 10.
    5. The difference should be equal to the 9th digit, which is considered the check digit.
    Example of validating S.I.N. 765932546
    1st digit 7
    2nd digit (6*2 =12 1+2=) 3
    3rd digit 5
    4th digit (9*2 = 18 1+8 =) 9
    5th digit 3
    6th digit (2*2 = 4) 4
    7th digit 5
    8th digit (4*2 = 8) 8
    Total 44 next multiple of 10 is 50
    50-44 = 6 which is the 9th digit
    Therefore the S.I.N. 765932546 is Valid
    ********* SIN Validation *********

    Value derived from 6th digit 3

  • HOW DO YOU GUYS DEAL WITH APPLE.. SO CONFUSING...NEED HELP WITH SPECS FOR PURCHASE OF IMAC 21.5

    Hi guys, been reading your forums, blogposts, etc and am getting more confused.  I'm just a video girl trying to produce meaningful content through web videos for small to mid sized businesses and want to come over from the dark side.
    Good news,, I dont need a super giant system,  I do simple editing for web videos, minimal graphics, no motion graphics, no animation etc. currently using CS4, will probably end up with 5.5.
    I want to get imac 21.5 or 27 if i have to..  So here's the question we all have,,, what do I really need besides an Apple fairy godmother to figure this crazy stuff out?????
    I want to be able to have firewire add on, but the rest is what I need help with.   So i've been looking at cs6 specs, even though im not there yet, eventually will be,, so just need to run cs4 now and build from there.  I also want to eventually move to final cut down the road so I want imac able to upgrade to final cut.
    WHAT DO I REALLY NEED MINIMALLY FOR NOW?  WHAT CAN I GET LATER IF i CHOOSE TO DO MORE AND NEED MORE POWER?
    cs6:
    Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8**
    4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
    4GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
    Additional disk space required for preview files and other working files (10GB recommended)
    1280x900 display
    7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended)
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
    DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (SuperDrive for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
    QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features
    Optional: Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance
    Any responses would be great.  I know you guys are busy answering the really high end tech questions

    All the current iMac models (both 21.5" and 27" with OS X Mt. Lion 10.8) will run CS4, 5.5 and 6 just fine.  They will also run Final Cut Pro X just fine.  Ditto for most any application you may want to use.
    Below are some notes (specific to your apparent requirements) that may help you with your purchase decision:
    Notes on purchasing a 21.5" iMac
    All 21.5" iMacs come with 8GB RAM but you cannot add more later.  I strongly suggest getting the maximum RAM (16GB) when you order the iMac.
    The basic hard drive is a 1TB 5400rpm drive.  It will work fine with Adobe CS but you will probably want the added speed of the optional 1TB Fusion drive for better performance. Some people will recommend/argue for one of the optional SSD drives instead, but they are very expensive and still only come in relatively small capacities - I don't recommend the SSD drives.  Get the Fusion drive and spend any extra money on a good external hard drive for backup and/or extra storage instead of an SSD.
    Notes on purchasing a 27" iMac
    All 27" iMacs come with 8GB RAM and you can add more later, up to 32GB
    The basic hard drive is a 1TB 7200rpm drive - it will be fine with Adobe CS.  There are upgrade options to a 3TB 7200rpm drive or a 1TB or 3TB fusion drive - these will be fine also.  There are also SSD drive options, but I do not recommend them. (Same comments as above.)
    Notes on all the current iMacs
    iMacs no longer come with built-in CD/DVD drives.  If you need one, you will need to purchase the Apple Superdrive accessory drive ($79)
    All of the iMac graphic processors (GPU's) are compatible with Adobe CS 4, 5.5, 6
    It is very difficult to impossible to change or upgrade the hard drive later on, so don't buy low-end thinking you can add a better internal hard drive later.
    Be aware that Macs always come with the latest (most recent) version of OS X.  And OS X Mavericks (10.9) is due to be released soon (in the next month or two).  There is no guarantee that the older Adobe CS 4 or 5.5 versions will run on OS X Mavericks.  If you cannot upgrade to CS 6 in the near future, you may want to purchase now rather than after OS X Mavericks is released.
    For what it's worth, I'd recommend the 27" iMac if your budget can afford it.  You will appreciate the larger screen size and added capabilities over the years you will use the computer.

  • I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a

    I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a all-in-one
    Product: D110a all-in-one
    OS: Windows XP Professional
    Error messages: None
    Changes before problem appeared: None--new installation
    The quality of photo images (mostly JPG files) in printouts is awful even though the files display beautifully on the PC screen. I am using
    IrfanView software for displaying/printing. As far as I can tell, IrfanView is not the problem.
    When I print the same images on a Deskjet 5150 attached to a different PC also running XP Pro and IrfanView, the quality of the printouts is at
    least acceptable, Some would probably say good or very good.
    It's dificult to explain in words the problem with the printouts. A picture of really pretty vegetables (squashes, tomatoes, watermelon, etc) comes
    out much too red. Moreover, the red, which appears shaded on the screen, seems to be all one shade in the D110a printouts.
    Something similar happens to a view of a huge tree in full leaf. On screen, there are subtle variations in the "greenness" of the leaves. In the
    printout, all green is the same shade. In the same printout, the trunk of the tree is all a single shade of grey. It isn;t even obvious that the
    trunk is a round, solid object.
    I liken the effect to audio that disappears entirely when you lower the volume and gets clipped into square waves in even moderately loud passages.
    I don't know whether the D110a driver software permits adjusting the parameters that appear to be set incorrectly, and if adjustments are possible,
    how I would identify which parameters to adjust, how I would access them, or how I would adjust them. I'm hoping that someone can help. Thanks.
    I forgot to mention that I have used the diagnostic application and it tells me that there are no problems.

    Hi everyone,
    I noticed the following message when network starts on my gateway
    Warning: This functionality is deprecated.
    Please refer to /etc/rc.conf on how to define a single wired
    connection, or use a utility such as netcfg.
    Then I realized the way network settings should be written in rc.conf has changed. But I can't figure out how this should be done.
    Currently, my set up is the following (old way):
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="eth1 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    eth0 is on DHCP because the IP is dynamically assigned my ISP.
    eth1 has a fix IP because it's on the LAN side.
    No problem to use DHCP on eth0 with the new settings.
    But for eth1, I don't know what I am supposed to write for gateway.
    Wiki isn't clear on that one either, and it looks like many articles still refer to the old way.
    Any guidance appreciated, thanks.
    brazzmonkey,
    you can't define 2 interfaces the old way (even though I saw some tricky workaround somewhere in the forums).
    Use, f.e., netcfg:
    Comment your old lines.
    In /etc/rc.conf insert:
    NETWORKS=(Eth0-dhcp Eth1-static)
    DAEMONS=(..... !network @net-profiles ....)
    In /etc/network.d create 2 files:
    First one is named  Eth0-dhcp.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION="ethernet"
    DESCRIPTION="Whatever text"
    INTERFACE=eth0
    HOSTNAME="your hostname"
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=15
    Second one is named Eth1-static.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION='ethernet'
    DESCRIPTION='whatver'
    INTERFACE='eth1'
    HOSTNAME='hname'
    IP='static'
    ADDR='192.168.0.10'
    GATEWAY='192.168.0.1' # your gateway IP
    DNS=('192.168.0.1') # your DNS server
    The names Eth0-dhcp and Eth1-static are not magic. They just must be the same in rc.conf and in /etc/network.d.
    Hope it helps.
    mektub
    PS: netcfg must be installed.
