Pretty hard to decipher logs for most of us.
Bad or incompatible RAM is the most common cause of KP's. It could just need to be reset…… to make sure there's a good connection.
Here's a great site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here's a great MacFixIt article.
Good Luck! DALE

Need help with Kernel Panic, ATIRadeonX2000
I have an iMac 27" (Late 2009) running OS 10.7.4 and the graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB. The problem is lately I'll come to the machine and it'll just freeze after a short period of use. Can't interact with anything, it's just a static screen. I can put the system to sleep by pressing the power button once (and it takes longer than normal to go to sleep), but when I wake it, as soon as the display comes on, kernel panic. This has just started and happened I'd say 4 times in the past week. I did recently have a failing HD replaced at an Apple Store.
Is there anything I can run to test the graphics card hardware? I ran AHT (not the extended test) from my original install discs and everything checked out okay. When at the Apple Store I remember the Genuis holding down D (Option-D?) when booting and going into this modern looking diagnostic tool. I couldn't figure out what it was or how to do it and restored to AHT on disc. Maybe it was removed on reinstall of the OS or downloaded/installed at the store. Thoughts?

Hi, I have had several kernel panics recently. It seems to only happen when I'm playing World of Warcraft during a very graphic intensive situation. I ran Hardware Test and it said everything was fine. My computer also occasionally just freezes without a kernel panic. I can move the cursor around, but I can't switch between applications nor can I use the current application.
Here is the kernel panic error:

Need help with Kernel Panic because of Intel Graphics Driver???
Hi,
I was using my mini mac has usual and it crashed! It seems to be related to the intel driver. Dont think I updated recently, although little snitch demo license did seem to run out just before it happened.
At first I could even log into to safe mode, but after several single user mode disk checking I seemed to be able to login through safe mode. Unfortunatley I cant role back, even if this was successful, through my timecapsule because I foolishly(Dont most people do this???) repartitioned my HD and lost my hidden recovery partition.
Anyway, I was thinking that if I can login through safe mode could I copy the driver that it is using to my normal bootup mode??? I have included my kernel panix below. Hope someone can help?

Ok. That sounds like a good idea. I do have an image stored on my time capsule. The problem is I can see it whn in safe mode!!! I know the capsule is working correctly because I can see it from another mac.
There is an application called 'restore from time machine...' Can I run this from safe mode??? Tried downloading the restore from usb app but this says that it cant install because the partition was removed!!! How can I use my time capsule to restore to this image???
You need another drive to boot from and this is why I suggested using a directly connected External HD instead of the Time Capsule, plus then you will still have the Time Capsule to fall back on for your data...
pbhacker wrote:
Looks like it was the NEW memory!!! Although I do have a problem...
1. First, I tried the old memory(2 x1GB). That seemed to work.
2. Then I tried the NEW memory again(2 x 4GB). Crashed like it has done in the past.
3. Then I tried the new and old memory(1GB + 4GB). Booted but then crashed when I logged in.
4. Finally tried one new memory stick(4GB). That seems to be working ok.
So, the question is it the NEW memory or is the mac? How can I test this? I guess I cant use the ATH application because there is no memory in that slot?
Any ideas?
You need to reinstall 10.7.4 somewhere so that you have a Restore Partition to work from.

Problem with kernel panic message - Cannot boot from disk or usb
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I've been trying to tackle for the last few days. I have a 24" iMac 2.33 Ghz Dual Core, with 2 gigs of RAM. A couple of days ago my computer crashed, and when I tried to boot up again I got the infamous grey screen kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer..."). What's worse is that I get the same message when I try booting from my external drive and the installation disk itself.
I've basically planned on formatting since it's been a while anyway, but since I can't boot from my external drive or the installation disk that came with my computer these are not options at the moment. I can only get into the computer via safe mode. I've used disk utility to verify the disk, and it comes up with no errors. Anyways, I'd really appreciate if anyone had any advice on this. I've scoured the internet for advice about kernel panic messages, and they all suggest booting from disk or external drive etc., which is not a possibility for me right now.
ThanksIf you get a panic when trying to boot from the installation disc, and the disc is not scratched or dirty, then you have a hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data. -
Please help interpreting kernel panic message
Hello.
Could anyone please help me to interpret the kernel panic message (below) I received today. I have had several such events recently, and I have already read and implemented the suggestions regarding resolving kernel panics listed on the X-Lab's X-FAQs website. I have run all the repair and diagnostic stuff that is usually recommended to other people posting questions about resolving kernel panics. I don't have anything plugged into my Mac except the keyboard and mouse, and I know that I could take my computer to a shop and have someone look it over.
My specific question is this: Can anyone interpret the actual content of this particular kernel panic message and give me any clue as to the likely source or cause of the problem, or what is happening?
I hope that no one is offended by my posting since I am not an expert who regularly uses this forum.
Thank you very much!

Was this a one-time problem?
I claim no particular expertise, but I don't see much in the panic.log that helps to isolate a specific underlying cause.
That is, except for Maxit's rationale. Because the backtrace indicates that the exception occurred upon loading the IOAudioFamily .kext (driver, or extension "family"), related hardware &/or driver compatibility would typically be worth exploring. Please check to be sure that you've disconnected all non-critical peripherals & disabled login items and any "system enhancers" while you're troubleshooting this problem.
The 0x300 DAR (data access register) trap is probably the most common type of exception that causes kernel panics. It simply indicates that the processor couldn't perform a data memory access. This could be due to a programming issue or a hardware problem (e.g., "bad" RAM, HD corruption).
If the problem recurs without any more specific indication from a panic.log or, e.g., console.log entr(ies), I suggest you diligently work through the course of action presented in Resolving kernel panics.
Sorry I can't offer anything more magically insightful.
Good luck!

1. Incorrect RAM (did you upgrade recently?)
2. Failed RAM, yes it does fail!
3. Unseated RAM, remove it and reseat firmly.
To test for RAM I'd recommend downloading Rember from:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember
I would also recommend studying Kernel Panics, Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics & About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages.
Good luck locating it. -

Can someone tell me based on my log what's causing my kernel panic? Can't diagnose the problem with any precision, but kernel panics are generally RAM or hardware related.

Need help troubleshooting Kernel panics
Hi,
I have had two Kernel Panics in two days just now, and another one a few weeks ago. The logs don't help me as I am not familiar with the wording on the Mac side, and I cannot submit the error reports to Apple as it fails, probably because I run 10.5.8 and Apple discontinued suppoort for Leopard or something like that. I would need help trying to figure out from the error message whether it is likely hardware, software, network, etc.
Here are the tope lines of the recent Kernel panic logs:

MacBook, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM
The last two kernel panics happened just as I hit "send" in Thunderbird, so it may be related. I fail to understand how such a simple command would crash a computer though. -
Please help with kernel panic...
I have a mid 2010 MBP running 10.7.4 and I've been getting random kernel panics this past week or so. It occurs randomly so I can't really pinpoint what's causing them. I also had issues with it coming back from sleep...I would just get a black screen and I'd have to hard reboot. I installed 8GB of Crucial RAM a couple of months ago which I replaced with the Apple RAM this morning, so far so good but I'm looking for some input if anyone has any. I'm thinking the RAM was the problem but I'm not certain.
Here's the latest log I have from this morning before I switched back to the Apple RAM....any help would be appreciated:

How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
Of course you would need to reinstall the new RAM first. Sometimes the problem is just that the new RAM did not seat properly.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Nothing in the panic log stands out except that you may have been using system Help when the panic occurred. Is this something that always triggers the panic? -
I NEED HELP WITH KERNEL ERROR THINGS
So...yesterday I was on the Apple website looking up why my computer shuts off randomly and I was going to download new firmwear but it said that I needed to download Mac OS X 10.4.8 first...(I have Mac OS X 10.4.6) So I started to download it and I left the room. When I came back to check on the progress it had turned off and whenever I try to turnit back on it says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the restart button" and in the background it says:

Can you help me get my computer to turn on again??? I've tried restarting it multiple ways and am at a loss.Hi,
the XLabs have a good article on how to resolve Kernel Panics: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
'Reboot while depressing C' means that you put the OSX DVD 1 that came with your Mac into the optical drive; restart your Mac from the Apple-Menu and during the restart hold down the 'C'-key on your keyboard.
That way your Mac is not booted from the internal harddisk but from the OSX DVD.
Good Luck

Help with kernel panic and freezing screen?
A few months ago I had kernel panic screens about twice, but the problem didn't recur again for a while. Over the last two weeks, however, I've had two more kernel panics, and the screen freezes (mouse, all actions, etc) and the machine has to be manually restarted about every five minutes.
I've tested the two ram sticks, erased and re-installed the OS but had no luck resolving the issue.
I followed the link on resolving kernel panic problems from earlier threads to troubleshoot as much as possible. I don't have the original software so can't do a few steps, but on the whole have had no luck.
I don't have any external or USB devices hooked up when it fails. I do occasionally use USB pen drives, but that doesn't seem to be related. I bought a new, non-apple power source a while back, too, but also don't think that's related.
Before I bought the laptop from a friend, he installed a different hard drive, but I believe it came from another G4 Ti machine. He left two screws out of the bottom of the case.
I'm thinking mainboard or possible hard drive? Any ideas?
Also, since reinstalling the harddrive, I've had no error report message come up when the machine restarts, and there isn't an error log file, at least not for kernel panics (that I can find.) Before I reinstalled the OS, I read the error reports and they said something about kernels....but I don't remember what, specifically.
If there are other useful logs I could post, let me know and I'll find them. Are the console logs or directory service logs of any use?
Thanks in advance for any help or any advice...!
PowerBook G4 Ti Mac OS X (10.4)
PowerBook G4 Ti Mac OS X (10.4)Hi tjk
- Thanks for the help.
I've tested the two ram sticks
How?
I took out each stick one at a time and ran the machine with a single instead of both.
I have dual 256 sticks. The original, and a Samsung which came with it when I bought it used.
In both cases, the same problem occurred.
How much free space do you have available on your HD?
If not 5GB or more, this could be causing issues.
I had about 20GB free. Now it's running with 70Gb free and still the same problems. It's an 80 GB hard drive that was installed into the PB when I bought it a few months ago. I had the machine for about three weeks first, and didn't have any of these problems with the other hard drive in it.
I don't have the install disk, so can't run the disk utility repair, correct. I've also not been able to get the PB to boot from the disk instead of the hard drive. It brings up only the hard drive as a selection to boot from, and spins up the OSX DVD, then ejects it each time.
...not sure why...I've been holding down option when restarting to boot from other drives -- if there's another way to boot from the disk, maybe that would work...
Have a look at the Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix and see if
it might apply to your PB. Which Ti do you have btw?
This is a really interesting link and for a bit I thought it sounded exactly like the problem...but I have the original TiBook, 500 Mhz so the trackpad cable doesn't run through the same spot. Maybe there's something else shorting out or pinching underneath...I'll take a look, but I'm not necessarily hardware savvy enough to know what to look for.
Thanks again for any suggestions.

issues are intermit freezing when just surfing the net ( hard reset needed )
And also now these intermit kernel panics for no reason, again just surfing the net. ( hard reset needed )
Apple are lucky i have a sense of humour! -
I've been troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics that have been happening on my late 2013 27" iMac. I had upgraded the stock RAM with 32 GB of RAM from Crucial and in the past the only time I have had similar issues was because of faulty RAM. So I swapped in a new set of RAM, but the problems continued.
Initially the errors would happen sometime during the night when I was logged out and when I would log on in the morning I would get a "Sleep Wake Failure experienced a problem" and the machine had been rebooted. But in the past week I have had several instances where the machine would all of a sudden go to the gray screen and tell me the computer had to be rebooted because of a problem. I've read in other threads hat the panic log can sometimes be helpful to narrow down the problem, but I am clueless as to how to read the log.
If anyone can help me narrow the problem down or point me in a good direction I would be forever thankful. Very frustarting becasue we have two identical iMacs that are basically carbon copies of each other and we only have the issue on one. Here is the log from the last time it rebooted while working:

My next step is to swap back to original memory but those sticks are in another machine so I have to pull them from there. Initially the problem was only happening at night so I disabled the "Power Nap", as I was reading another thread that referenced similar problems to those that I was having. Everything was Ok after that for about a week and then it started up again. Either way it was not really a fix, but I was trying to see if there was any pattern.
But as I said above, next step is to swap back to original memory but I do not have access to that machine at the moment.
