Need help with shell scripting and Patching

Hello all,
I am a very new Oracle DBA and I just have an interview where i have been ask two questions that i have no idea of what it is
1/ What is shell scripting and how do you do shell scripting?
2/ What is Patching and how do you do patching?
Can some one help to have a very good understanding of these tow questions?
Thanks a lot

1/ What is shell scripting and how do you do shell scripting?shell accept command from you (via keyboard) and execute them. But if you use command one by one (sequence of 'n' number of commands) , the you can store this sequence of command to text file and tell the shell to execute this text file instead of entering the commands. This is know as shell script.
Shell script defined as:
"Shell Script is series of command written in plain text file. Shell script is just like batch file in MS-DOS
for example:- for taking backup, health check and doing some task Operating system level or Oracle database level we can create shell script and schedule a cron job
2/ What is Patching and how do you do patching?for example ,in windows while using sometimes you might face an issue/error and it gives pop up error message would like to send/report this error to microsoft? microsoft will send you a fix for that. lot of fixes for errors/bugs are released as patches.( n number of patches with newer features are releases as new version)
likewise in oracle for resolving bugs we should have to apply patch.
patch is basically a fix for a bug/bugs. we need to use opatch utility to apply the paches.
hope, this helps you

  • HELP with Shell scripting!!!

    Hello all,
    I'm very new to shell scripting and I'm trying to learn a little more as I go on. I'm trying to write a shell script to create a symbolic link to an application and have it moved to the current user's desktop. I've been doing some testing with the default applications installed on Leopard here is what I have so far...
    ls -s /Applications/Chess.app
    I've trying using cp commands, but I continue to get error messages. The above script does create a symbolic link to my home directory, but I want to then move it from the home directory to the current user's desktop. Can anyone lead me any further?
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    I'm also having a problem making my shell script unix executable. I have tried chmod +x path/to/script and then I killall Finder but nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?
    Are you trying to make your script "Double-Clickable"?
    Then you still need to do the
    chmod +x /path/to/script
    But that will just make it something you can run from a shell.
    If you want double-clickable, you can create an Automator app
    Applications -> Automator -> Run Shell Script
    Or you can download the free Platypus utility that will make any script a double-clickable applications.
    Or you can name your script
    myscript.command
    where the .command is the important part, which the Finder will treat as something it should execute as a shell script when double-clicked.
    And no killing Finder. They will work without messing with the Finder.
    Personally, I prefer the Automator app or Platypus. Well I also work a lot in the shell, and I execute scripts as script in the shell all the time, so I only create a lot more scripts that get executed as commands than I do double-clickable scripts.

  • Need help with Airport Express and so on.

    Ok so my main problem before getting into what I need help with here is that our MacBooks and now my iPhone 6 plus isn't staying online. Keep getting booted off and then I either have to select the network again or it will eventually go back on. If anyone has a solution or so please feel free to answer that as well. I'm running on Roadrunner with a Netgear 600 wireless router and a motorola modem. Both of which I'll leave the link to below for a better look.
    My Main Question: So I'm looking at a new wireless router mainly and possibly a new modem. I know Apple products are trustworthy but how good is the Airport Express and other Airport products. Also what is the Maximum speed and Maximum data speed for the cheapest express station and if anyone knows the speeds of the other devices it would be greatly appreciated.

    DSL Router to Netgear 5-port Switch and I used the switch to connect to Airport Extreme, TV, Blue-Ray DVD player and DirecTV Receiver.
    The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is a router so it will do what you need.
    You need to reconfigure your setup. Connect the WAN port of the AEBS to the DSL router. Then connect the Netgear switch to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS. The AEBS will properly share the connection.

  • Need help with Page Layout and Background Scaling

    hello, everyone.
    I am in the process of designing a new website for myself,
    and while I was researching nicely designed pages to use as
    inspiration, I stumbled upon this site:
    http://www.jeffsarmiento.com/
    obviously, the design is very impressive, but it also
    incorporates a lot of web mechanics that I have been trying to
    figure out, so I will use this page as an example.
    one thing I need help with is backgrounds. as you can see in
    the posted website, the creator used a seamlessly tiled paper
    texture to display the bulk of his content on. also make not of the
    pattern that is located to the left of the paper texture. how do I
    create seamless backgrounds like this that will scale to fit any
    amount of content or any resolution? I can't imagine that the guy
    that made that site created a new size background every time he
    made an update, so there has to be an easier way.
    the second thing that I am having trouble with is general
    site layout. I have read that most sites used series of invisible
    tables to organize there content, but when I open the source of
    this page in dreamweaver, he was using something different. div
    tags? should I be using these? who do I use them? are there any
    general layout tips that someone could pass on to me? perhaps a
    link to a good tutorial?
    please help me. i am very confused.
    thanks so much.

    IMO not a good site to emulate. To wit:
    Top background image:
    http://www.jeffsarmiento.com/images/bg-top.jpg;
    745px
    x 350px 137K
    Main background image:
    http://www.jeffsarmiento.com/images/bg-tile.jpg;
    745px x 950px 130K
    Total page size: 454K (Check here:
    www.websiteoptimization.com)
    Website usability experts routinely recommend a maximum page
    size of ~80K
    Check out the We We Scale @ www.FutureNowInc.com/wewe/ where
    they suggest,
    "You speak about yourself approximately 0,003 times as often
    as you speak
    about your customers. Might that have an impact on your
    effectiveness?"
    That is 100% consistent with the #1 Web Design mistake:
    "Believing people
    care about you and your web site." or to phrase more
    expansively, "Our site
    tries to tell you how wonderful we are as a company, but not
    how we're going
    to solve your problems."
    www.sitepoint.com has some excellent books on making a
    website actually
    attractive and usable at the same time.

    Hi all

    Hi

  • Need help with show/hide and layers moving

    I'm more of a designer, so I don't know code or CSS well at
    all. I'm doing an online portfolio for a class and need help with
    layers not staying in place in different browsers. The portfolio is
    created with a table, but I wanted to use the show/hide function
    for thumbnails of work. Are layers the only way you can use this
    function? I read layers don't work well with tables, so how else
    can I make it so when you mouse over a thumbnail, the larger image
    appears in another cell?

    > I don't know code or CSS well at all.
    That's unfortunate.
    > layers not staying in place in different browsers.
    Layers don't move. But the rest of your page does.
    Before you get too wrapped up in layers, though, please read
    this -
    http://www.great-web-sights.com/g_layerlaws.asp
    They are not good when be used as a primary layout method.
    > I read layers don't work well with tables
    They work fine with tables - but you have to understand both
    tables and
    layers to use them.
    Why not show us your page, so we can see what you are
    struggling with?

  • Need help with a script for moving bulk users to another OU and removing/assigning groups

    I've never used PowerShell before and have been asked to track down a script that can move bulk users from one OU to another, and remove and assign new group membership. I've been googling it for about 30 minutes and haven't really gotten anywhere. If
    somebody can point me in the right direction or give some tips I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm sure this kind of task has been done by several people in similar environments I just haven't been able to find those people/examples.

    Here's what I've got so far...
    Moving to new OU
    CSV constructed like below...
    DN
                                                                                                                                                    TargetOU
    “CN=John R, OU=BB,OU=ES,OU=Students,OU=OSD,DC=usd233,=DC=local”
                          "OU=PRT,OU=MS,OU=Students,OU=OSD,DC=usd233,DC=local"
    Import-Module activedirectory
    $UserList = Import-Csv "c:\yourCSVhere.csv"
    foreach ($User in $UserList) {
    $User.DN
    $User.TargetOU
    Move-ADObject -Identity $User.DN -TargetPath $User.TargetOU
    Would this work? I also need to remove the user from two groups and add them to two different groups as well. Would I need to use the addUsertoGroups and removeUserfromGroups commands?

  • Need help in Shell Scripts

    Hi,
    I have a requirement need a help.
    Requirement states like this:
    I need to write a shell script through which I need to search a huge lines code and to find out following information :
    1. Total No of lines of the code
    2. No of DML statements (select,update,insert, delete) used like how many SELECT, How many UPDATE etc used in it.
    3. No of base apps tables referenced like How many tables starting with "CMF_" is present.
    4. No of procedure calls like how many procedures starting with "PROC_" used.
    Can anyone help me in this ? I need to script.
    My Unix version is :
    $ uname -a
    SunOS appsnet 5.6 Generic_105181-21 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4
    Thanks in advance
    [email protected]

    What you need here is a AWK script. This script will read the input as the source file (as command line
    argument or as standard input), and process each like of the file read to look for the different patterns
    in that line (looking for example if the line contans "SELECT " or "INSERT " etc...) and increment its
    corresponding count. At the end of the script in the END section you can get the number of lines with the
    NR awk inbuilt variable.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need Help With Shell Programming

    Hi, I need some guidance as to how to approach my project.
    I need to develop a shell to host an e-learning environment that can be accessed through the internet. The user, preferably, needs not to download anything to run/start the e-learning environment. This e-learning environment allows users/students to create a forum, create a chatroom, hand up projects, send mail, do surveys and tutorials online and these can be submitted to the teacher/marker and receive feedback and also view their grades and schedule. Eg, Blackboard http://www.blackboard.com/
    The problem is is that there seems to be no shell programming by using java. I have found only shell programming using UNIX, korn and C. I read other posts in the forums here concerning shell programming and alot of the codes include the first 2 lines :
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    String command = "your_shell_script_command";
    try {
          Process process = rt.exec(command);
         from = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(process.getInputStream()));
         to = new PrintWriter(process.getOutputStream(), true);
    catch (IOException e) {         ...       }the above codes were taken from this post: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=57&thread=352231
    Does it means that I need to use another language besides Java to program a shell and then run it together with my java program? If so, what language do I need to learn and what Java "component" do I need to use? and is it possible to run a shell in an applet, since the applet is viewable through a browser?
    I really need some help on this problem as I don't have a clue to go about it at all. Thanks in advance.

    er, actually the applet does not seem to load at all.
    But from what you have written, yeah, I need to
    process the user's input and in my case, his
    selected/choosen options in a menu.
    E.g, the user wants to create a forum, he/she chooses
    the create forum option from the menu which is part of
    the shell and something happens which allows the user
    to customise the forum.
    So, let me get this straight, I can create an applet
    and run the shell on the applet and the user can view
    this application without downloading anything? As YAT said...providing they have the java plugin...yes... if you keep it to java.applet.Applet (AWT) and not JApplet, you should even have more users able to run it without 'downloading' anything..
    Now..to be clear... they ARE downloading your .class files, and running them within a JVM on their own local machine... But they will not need anything (assuming their browser supports the Java version you write in) else...

  • Help with shell script

    Can anyone here help me (getting my feet wet) with an addition to a profile (applmgr) that I am trying to make - in the form of a shell script.
    I have the following lines in the profile file - but each time I log into the server as applmgr, I get the error following
    if $HOSTNAME=hostname1
    tnen
    . /u01/xxees/EBST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOST.env
    fi
    if $HOSTNAME=hostname2
    ./u01/xxees/EBST2/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOST.env
    fi
    The error message I am getting us
    -bash: /local/ebsuser/applmgr/.profile: line 39: syntax error near unexpected token `fi'
    -bash: /local/ebsuser/applmgr/.profile: line 39: `fi'
    Thank you all.
    Edited by: 864641 on Jun 13, 2012 1:49 PM

    From the Error Message at line Number 38, I feel that, the file /u01/xxees/EBSTEST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOST.env (where $HOST can be "hostname01" or "hostname02") has been modified and has unmatched if.
    Also, If you are using the variable HOSTNAME, I feel that the env file should be like /u01/xxees/EBSTEST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOSTNAME.env in which case your script will be like:
    if [$HOSTNAME == "hostname01"]; then
    . /u01/xxees/EBSTEST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOSTNAME.env
    fi
    if [$HOSTNAME == "hostname02"]; then
    . /u01/xxees/EBSTEST2/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOSTNAME.env
    fi
    Hope that this two things will help in resolving the issue.

  • Need help with python script for Deluge

    I am using Deluge 1.3.2 with web server, and all works fine, I use this script in the Deluge settings to execute upon torrent completion:
    #!/bin/bash
    torrentid=$1
    torrentname=$2
    torrentpath=$3
    torrenttimedelta=`/usr/bin/python2 /home/bobby/scripts/deluge/torrentTimeDelta.py $1`
    subject="Started download new torrent!"
    message="$torrentname to $torrentpath"
    echo -e `date`"::Finished downloading torrent:$2 in: $3" with id:$torrentid >> ~/logs/scripts.log
    echo -e `sendEmail -t [email protected] -f [email protected] -u "deluge server notification: torrent $torrentname is complete!" -m "$torrentname has completed downloading at: $torrentpath and took $torrenttimedelta to complete :)" -xu [email protected] -xp password -v -o tls=yes -s email.com` >> ~/logs/scripts.log
    echo ---------------------------------------- >> ~/logs/scripts.log
    This is to email me when a torrent is done and works. What I wanted to add to this email was the time taken to complete the torrent. I have gotten help from Deluge forum in this thread: http://forum.deluge-torrent.org/viewtop … =9&t=36989  However I think it's something with Python within Arch that is the obstacle, and so that helpful person can't do much more IMO. The python script I'm using is:
    #!/usr/bin/python2
    from deluge.ui.client import client
    from twisted.internet import reactor
    d = client.connect()
    def on_connect_success(result):
    print "Connection was successful!"
    def on_get_torrent_value(value):
    for torrent in value:
    print "%s: %s" % (torrent, value[torrent]["name"])
    client.disconnect()
    reactor.stop()
    client.core.get_torrents_status({}, ["name"]).addCallback(on_get_torrent_value)
    d.addCallback(on_connect_success)
    def on_connect_fail(result):
    print "Connection failed!"
    print "result:", result
    d.addErrback(on_connect_fail)
    reactor.run()
    Now if I call this from shell directly, it works. However, including it with my email script at the top, Deluge itself freezes and no email is sent. I run ps aux | grep deluge and I can see that the script has run, but apparently died and all is just hanging. I kill the script process and Deluge resumes just fine, the email is sent. Kinda confused how to remedy this, appreciate any help Thanks
    P.S. When I get the email, the part that says ""$torrentname has completed downloading at: $torrentpath and took $torrenttimedelta to complete "" shows nothing where $torrenttimedelta should be, it just says "and took to complete"

    [edit]  Sorry, I don't use deluge and I messed up my test script. If the script is executable try `/home/bobby/scripts/deluge/torrentTimeDelta.py $1`
    Are there any other errors? or try running bash with debug output to see if it will tell you something else
    The problem you are having is bash doesn't recognize variables inside the tick marks.
    Hope that helps

  • Need help with Boot Camp and Win 7

    I have iMac 27" (iMac11,1) 2.8 GHz, quad core, 8MB of L3, 8GB of Memory, Boot ROM Version IM111.0034.B02 and SMC Version 1.54f36 and can't get this machine to run Windows 7 using Boot Camp.  I have successfully loaded Win 7 but when it claims to be starting I only get a black screen after initial start up.
    I have checked and rechecked my software updates and have read and reread the instructions, however, I can't update my Boot Camp to 3.1 (my machine says i'm running 3.0.4) and I need 3.1 but can't load 3.1 because it is an exe file that has to be loaded into Windows after I load Windows but can't open Windows because I can't load Boot Camp 3.1.  That's my excuse anyway, so I'm missing something I just can't figure out what it is....this is where you come in!
    Thanks.

    I'm not going to be much help with Boot Camp however I can direct you to the Boot Camp forum where there are more people that know how to troubleshoot it and Windoze 7. You can find it at:
