Need help with simple problem.......

Hello, I'm fairly new to Java, taking my first year in it. I have a little applet that I have to write up but I'm having some difficulties. Someone please help :)
OBJECTIVE: Print out the following using a FOR loop.
OUTPUT:
JavaProgramming
JavaProgramming
JavaProgramming
JavaProgramming
JavaProgramming
I am really having trouble doing the loop and spacing, so that it would have "JavaProgramming" appear 5 times and automatically indent 2 spaces everytime. I've done a "HSA" Console Program (NOT APPLET) where there are 5 words that are not spaced but when I try to do the same in an applet, it simply wont repeat in the loop. Below is the program where there are 5 words WITHOUT spacing in my applet program, I don't know how to repeat it 5 times and have it space 2 times everytime :(
public class Test extends Applet
    // Place instance variables here
    public void init ()
    } // init method
    public void paint (Graphics g)
        for (int i = 0 ; i < 5 ; i++)
            g.drawString ("JavaProgramming", 20, 20);
    } // paint method
} // Test classThis will only show "JavaProgramming" once when i run the program. I need it to show 5 times, with 2 spaces indented every time!

this:
g.drawString ("JavaProgramming", 20, 20);
probably needs to be something like:
g.drawString("JavaProgramming", 20+(i*10), 20+(i*10));
i.e: increase x and y pos for each iteration.

    i'd like to be advanced with my studies so i will post questions.. i need help on how to answer. thank you.
    1. create a java program that will evaluate if the value entered is a positive, negative, vowel, consonant and special characters.
    im actually done with the positive and negative using if else statements.. i used an integer data type. now my question is how do conjoin the characters when i need to evaluate a vowel and a consonant. i cant use char either. please help. i dont know what to do yet.
    2. create java program that will translate the input from numbers to words. e.g. input:123 output: one hundred twenty-three.
    i have an idea to use a switch case statement. but i have no idea on how will i be able to do it. so if you guys can help me.. well then thankies..

    Welcome to the Sun forums. First, please note that you have posted in the wrong forum. This forum is for topics related to Sun's JavaHelp product. You should post your questions in the New to Java forum.
    As part of your learning, you will have to develop the ability to select an approach to a problem, create a design that reflects that approach, and then implement the design with code that you create.
    So, it's inappropriate for us to take the problem statement that you have been given and short-circuit your learning process by giving you the implemented problem solution. We can comment on the individual questions that you may have, and point out problems and errors that we see in the code that you develop.
    As a hint, when you are stuck, forget about Java and programming. Just start with a sheet of paper and a pencil, and figure out how to layout the task on paper. The consider how to translate that to programming.
    If you have problems, post short example code that shows the problem, and explain your question clearly. We can't read minds.

  • Need help with getResource() problem under weblogic 6.1

    Hey all,
              I've got a serious problem that I can't figure out. This should be really
              simple - but it's alluding me. I have an ear file with a number of servlets
              inside it. This ear file also contains a resource that my servlets want to
              read from. This resource is located (within the ear file) at:
              "/content/structure/a.txt". The file contains raw ascii.
              To have my serlvet read from this file, I thought it would be as simple as:
              URL content =
              servlet.getServletContext().getResource("/content/structure/a.txt");
              // pw is an instance of PrintWriter
              pw.print(content.getContent());
              However, when I execute the above I get the following exception:
              java.lang.NullPointerException
              at
              java.net.URLConnection.stripOffParameters(URLConnection.java:1011)
              at java.net.URLConnection.getContentHandler(URLConnection.java:979)
              at java.net.URLConnection.getContent(URLConnection.java:581)
              OK, so fine - I figure that I'm new to this. The documentation for the URL
              class tells me there is another way around this. It says that rather then
              calling getContent() directly, I can open a stream on the URL and read from
              that, like so:
              URL content =
              servlet.getServletContext().getResource("/content/structure/scenario2resourc
              es.txt");
              FileInputStream fis = content.openStream();
              but when I do this I get the following different exception:
              java.lang.ClassCastException: weblogic.utils.zip.SafeZipFileInputStream^M
              at Utility.writeFileToOutput(Utility.java:134)^M
              Apparently this thing is trying to return a web-logic-specific stream (which
              is incompatible with an FileInputStream) - which I don't want to use or
              learn about since I want my stuff to work under other webservers.
              Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? This should be simple.

    Wenjin,
              I appreciate your response. I tried treating it as a normal InputStream -
              but it didn't make any difference. Here's what I did:
              URL content =
              servlet.getServletContext().getResource("/content/structure/scenario2resourc
              es.txt");
              InputStream is = (InputStream)content.getContent();
              And here's the exception:
              java.lang.NullPointerException^M
              at
              java.net.URLConnection.stripOffParameters(URLConnection.java:1011)^M
              at
              java.net.URLConnection.getContentHandler(URLConnection.java:979)^M
              at java.net.URLConnection.getContent(URLConnection.java:554)^M
              at java.net.URL.getContent(URL.java:807)^M
              at Utility.writeFileToOutput(Utility.java:134)^M
              You can see that it is definitely breaking somewhere in getContent().
              If you have any other ideas, I'd appreciate hearing about them.
              -john

  • Need help with daq problem

    Hi,
    I need to generate a clock with a period of 20 micro seconds, duty cycle of
    approx 20% and a data line as well as an address line all linked to the clock
    pulse.
    I have tried many different solutions, all using the Daq PCI-1200 but nothing
    seems to work correctly. Usually the system bombs and I have to do a manual
    reset to over come the problem.
    Any suggestions?

    You'll need an external clock, expecially under Windows.
    Windows ticks with appr. 18 Hz, and the CPU tick isn't always available
    when Windows tasks multi.

  • Need Help with Scrolling Problem

    I have a JTree displayed in scrollpane. Based on search criterial I select the nodes where the search criteria is found. If the match is located off the screen further down into the tree, the node is highlighted but the scrollpane doesn't automatically scroll down to show it. Any help with this problem is appreciated.

    Wow.. Thanks. I thought I would need some fancy code to handle this problem. scrollPathToVisible did it for me. Thanks.

  • Need Help With Simple ABAP Code

    Hello,
    I'm loading data from a DSO (ZDTBMAJ) to an Infocube (ZCBRAD06). I need help with ABAP code to some of the logic in Start Routine. DSO has 2 fields: ZOCTDLINX & ZOCBRDMAJ.
    1. Need to populate ZOCPRODCD & ZOCREFNUM fields in Infocube:
        Logic:-
        Lookup /BI0/PMATERIAL, if /BIC/ZOCBRDMAJ = /BIC/OIZOCBRDMAJ
        then /BIC/ZOCPRODCD = ZOCPRODCD in Infocube
               /BIC/ZOCREFNUM = ZOCREFNUM in Infocube
    2. Need to populate 0G_CWWTER field in Infocube:
        Logic:
        Lookup /BIC/PZOCTDLINX, if /BIC/ZOCTDLINX = BIC/OIZOCTDLINX
        then G_CWWTER = 0G_CWWTER in Infocube.
    I would need to read single row at a time.
    Thanks!

    I resolved it.

  • Need Help with simple array program!

    Hi, I have just recently started how to use arrays[] in Java and I'm a bit confused and need help designing a program.
    What this program does, it reads in a range of letters specified by the user. The user then enters the letters (a, b or c) and stores these characters into an array, which the array's length is equal to the input range the user would enter at the start of the program. The program is then meant to find how many times (a,b and c) appears in the array and the Index it first appears at, then prints these results.
    Here is my Code for the program, hopefully this would make sense of what my program is suppose to do.
    import B102.*;
    class Letters
         static int GetSize()
              int size = 0;
              boolean err = true;
              while(err == true)
                   Screen.out.println("How Many Letters would you like to read in?");
                   size = Keybd.in.readInt();
                   err = Keybd.in.fail();
                   Keybd.in.clearError();
                   if(size <= 0)
                        err = true;
                        Screen.out.println("Invalid Input");
              return(size);

              char input;
              char[] letter = new char[size];
              for(int start = 1; start <= size; start++)
                   System.out.println("Please enter a letter (a, b or c) ("+size+" max), enter # to stop:");
                   input = Keybd.in.readChar();

    }     Some errors i get with my program are:
    When reading in the letters to store into the array, I get the last letter I entered placed into the entire array. Also I believe my code to find the Index is incorrect.
    Example Testing: How many letters would you like to read? 3
    Enter letter (a, b or c) (# to quit): a
    Enter letter (a, b or c) (# to quit): b
    Enter letter (a, b or c) (# to quit): c
    It prints "There are no a's'" (there should be 1 a at index 0)
    "There are no b's" (there should be 1 b at index 1)
    and "There are 3 c's, first appearing at index 0" ( there should be 1 c at index 2)
    The last thing is that my code for when the user enters "#" that the input of letters would stop and the program would then continue over to the counting and searching part for the letters, my I believe is correct but I get the same problem as stated above where the program takes the character "#" and stores it into the entire array.
    Example Testing:How many letters would you like to read? 3
    Enter letter (a, b or c) (# to quit): a
    Enter letter (a, b or c) (# to quit): #
    It prints "There are no a's'" (should have been 1 a at index 0)
    "There are no b's"
    and "There are no c's"
    Can someone please help me??? or does anyone have a program simular to this they have done and would'nt mind showing me how it works?
    Thanks
    lou87.

    Without thinking too much...something like this
    for(int start = 0; start < size; start++) {
                System.out.println("Please enter a letter (a, b or c) ("+size+" max), enter # to stop:");
                input = Keybd.in.readChar();
                while((input != 'a') && (input != 'b') && (input != 'c') && (input != '#')) {
                    Screen.out.println("Invalid Input");
                    System.out.println("Please enter a letter (a, b or c) ("+size+" max, enter # to stop:");
                    input = Keybd.in.readChar();
                if(input == '#') {
                        break;
                letter[start] = input;
            }you dont even need to do start = size; coz with the break you go out of the for loop.

  • URL: newbie needs help with simple programming question!

    Hi everyone,
    Please direct me to a FAQ or other resource, or help me with this problem:
    I want to create a text field (or similar container) that contains both ordinary text AND a URL/hyperlink in it. For example, the following text might appear in the text field:
    "I have many _pictures_ from my vacation"
    where the word "pictures" is actually a hyperlink to a web site, and the other portions of the string are simple text.
    All advice and help is appreciated!

    Well here is one way you code do it but if you do alittle research on them links above it will explain how this code works.Well it will explain how jeditorpane and hyperlinklistener work

  • Need help with serious problem

    Hi.
    I thought this was a simple problem, but it turned out to be more complicated than I thought.
    I have been experimenting with JFrames and found a problem when trying to disable the maximise button of a JFrame.
    The program starts up maximising the JFrame with the line of code below:
    setExtendedState(this.getExtendedState()|JFrame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH);
    This seems to be working fine, because it allow the application to start up full screen.
    The next line of code disables the resize button on the JFrame's TitleBar:
    setResizable(false);
    The problem is that when you dubble-click on the Titlebar of the application it responds when it is not suppose to do so.
    The program resizes everything to a minimum. Dubble-clicking on the TitleBar again, it won't allow a resize. It looks as if the program ignores the fact that the JFrame has been sized to full-screen, allowing the user to dubble-click on the application's TitleBar once. After that it is ignored completely.
    Have anyone experienced this before? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi Keith,
    Thank you very much for such a quick reply....That's not an SSCCE, See below for an SSCCE... except it doesn't reproduce the problem (for me).
    Observered behaviour on Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000] running java version "1.6.0_12" as Administrator is:
    1. The form opens in "normal" window state (NOT maximized or minimized).
    2. Clicking on the maximize button has no effect.
    3. Double clicking on the title-bar has no effect.
    So... I presume we're talking apples and oranges (or windows, as the case may be).
    Which O/S are you on, what version (distro & release) and what version of the JRE/JDK are you using (java -version, and javac -version respectively).
    Does the code I posted reproduce the issue on your machine?
    package forums;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import java.awt.Toolkit;
    public class NonResizableMaximisedJFrame
      public static void main(String args[]) {
        JFrame frame = new JFrame("Application");
        //frame.setIconImage(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("TitleBar.gif"));
        frame.setDefaultCloseOperation( JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE );
        frame.setSize( 300, 200 );
        frame.setResizable(false);
        frame.setExtendedState( frame.getExtendedState() | JFrame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH );
        frame.setVisible(true);
    }... Also please note: Post code between a pair of tags, to retain formatting (as above)... See also: the CODE button above the forum edit-box... along with some other handy shortcuts... Noobs usually prefer the "rich text" editor... and the old sea dogs hate it. Go figure.
    Cheers. Keith.

  • Need help with a problem after cloning my HD....

    I recently cloned my HD to a backup drive. I did an erase and install of Tiger on my original drive. I recently cloned everything back onto my original drive from my backup drive. Now when I go to boot up on my original drive, for the first time ever I must type a Username and Password to log on to the computer. Trouble with this is, I tried my username and password and it would not work. I double, triple, quadruple checked my spelling and tried different combinations just in case i was being stupid, NOPE. It won't let me log on to my main HD. Can anyone help with this?

    Let me get this straight. You did
    1: Cloned your original boot drive to a external - not a problem
    (did you boot from the clone to check it out?, did you use cloning software or???)
    2: You erased your original boot drive - ok no problem.
    3: You then installed Tiger on your original boot drive - ok no problem there
    4: But you cloned from your clone back onto your original, freshly installed Tiger drive?
    Why did you do this?
    Cloning copies the whole drive, all the little hidden stuff, copy protection etc.
    That's why it's called a clone.
    Did you mean to say you copied certain folders/files from the clone onto the new Tiger install on your original boot drive?
    What folders/files was these?
    You need to copy the contents of certain folders inside your User folder, not the folders themselves.
    What software did you use to clone with?

  • Need help with simple XML validation

    I am new to Spry and need some help creating a simple
    validation. There is a form field which must not contain a value
    already in the database. I have a script which accepts a parameter
    and returns a boolean result. Here is the XML:
    <samples>
    <sample>
    <ISFOUND>0</ISFOUND>
    </sample>
    </samples>
    1. How do I call this script when the form field changes and
    pass the form value as the parameter?
    2. How do I check the returned value in the XML and throw an
    error if true?
    I appreciate any help with this. Please let me know if there
    is a better way to achieve the same result.
    Thanks,
    Rich

    I enabled the call to the XML response. However, I am having
    trouble identifying when the call is complete so I can parse the
    result. How do I run my check after the data load and display the
    proper message?

  • Beginner needs help with simple code.

    I just statrted learnind java, and I need some help with this simple program. For some reason everytime I enter my Farenheit value, the Celsius conversion returns as 0.0. Would really appreciate the help. Thanks.
    Here's the code:
    public class TempConverter
    public static void main(String[] args)
    double F = Double.parseDouble(args[0]);
    System.out.println("Temperature in Farenheit is: " + F);
    double C = 5 / 9;
    C *= (F - 32);
    System.out.println("Temperature in Celsius is: " + C);
    }

    double C = 5 / 9This considers "5" and "9" to be integers and does an integer division, discarding the remainder. The result of that division is 0. Trydouble C = 5.0/9.0;

  • Help with simple problem

    Hello,
    How to find out if the text in the jtextpane is bold or not?
    How to find out a part of a string is bold or not?
    I have made a part of the String to bold e.g aaaa<b>aaaa</b>aaaaa in one JTextPane. I need to get the string as it is and append it to another JTextPane.
    I have tried this,
    StyleConstants.setBold(attr, StyleConstants.isBold(attr));
    This doesnt work.
    Please help

    your_text_pane.getFont().isBold();
    should tell you whether the JTextPane font is a bold Font or not.
    Check out the documentation of String.indexOf(). Using something like...int startpos = your_string.indexOf("<b>") + 3;
    if(startpos > -1) {
       int endpos = your_string.indexOf("</b>",startpos);
       if(endpos > -1) {
          String text = your_string.substring(startpos, endpos);
          //do what you need to with the text

  • Need help with simple mask problem

    hi there this is mark from superbooty a band that has played in the bay area for over 10 years...
    i was wondering if someone could help me with a Motion2 problem i'm having regarding masks.
    i'm working on this simple animated scene of a car going by a beach - the photo is from the passenger side and shows the outside mirror.
    i'm moving the background (different from the original that came with the car) and i want to move an image of tokyo inside the mirror housing too.
    i figured out how to do the mask but when i try to animate the image of tokyo the mask layer moves with it. when i lock the mask i can't move the image - ???
    there's got to be a way to lock the mask but be able to move what it is masking..
    here are the links to three images that show what the problem is - the first is
    the shot of the scene unmasked, shot 2 is the scene with the mask enabled, and the third is the shot when i try to animate the tokyo background:

    any help would be most appreciated - thanks!

    Adam's solution is the one I'd use - put the mirror contents in a layer, mask the layer, then manipulate the mirror content image. Did this solve it for you - if so, please click on the or buttons over posts as appropriate...
