I am willing to spend almost any amount, to save myself the time searching on the internet, and to get a quality product that is capable of copying SVHS video tapes to a Thunderbolt2 adapter. Everyone seems to advertise they have one, when I get to the website, read for 15-30 minutes, I find whatever device they are selling does not have a SVHS connector for input.
There has got to be something out there that is available and works. I've got a lot of family memories that are priceless, and I want to do it right the first time. If you have first hand experience please share with me. Otherwise guessing will just create more anxiety which I don't need. Thanks in advance.

You must realize that you are dealing with 25-year-old technology (SVHS).   Therefore, the technology for making the conversions you want to do will be older as well. Most people are now dealing with fully digital movie cameras with few moving parts, and no tapes. Therefore current technology has moved beyond what you are trying to do. Some of the tools and techniques I will mention below are 3 to 7 years old, but they do indeed work.
I have done what you are trying to do MANY times.   You're going to need a computer with FireWire ports. They can be FireWire 400 or FireWire 800. For this type of work I have used a Mac Pro, but more recently I purchased a new Mac Mini (with OS 10.9.5) dedicated to this purpose.
For maximum quality here is my procedure: ADVC300 > iMovie HD 06 > iDVD 09/11.
To get your SVHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300 . With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie HD 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11).
The ADVC300 has been discontinued by the manufacturer. The included software (which is not really necessary but does enhance performance) is not compatible with OS 10.7 or newer. You can still find the ADVC300 for sale in a few outlets as well as eBay. It will sell between 50% and 100% ABOVE its retail price. Yes, it's that good.
If you can’t find the ADVC300, use the Grassvalley ADVC110.
I have a drawer full of analog-to-digital converters.   After using the Grass Valley ADVC300 I find nothing else acceptable.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
I would use iMovie HD 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09, 11, and 13 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video. (Also the latest iMovie CANNOT set Chapters !!)
After lots of experimenting I get the best results using OS 10.6, iMovie HD 06, and iDVD 09/11. My movies look just like Hollywood!
My primary computer is a Mac Pro, so I just use one of the four hard drives and boot OS 10.6. You can also partition a single hard drive to achieve the same results.
This may seem like more trouble than you want to go through. However, I find the superior quality to be well worth it.

Transition advices to new Mac Pro needed

hi everyone ... I would like to ask your opinion in how to transition from my old Mac Pro to the new one that will arrive soon.
my main concern is my old habit in using the 4 hard-drive slots of my old MP for so many years now:
disk 1: contains the operating system with basic data
disk 2: contains my main data I use every day for work
disk 3: time-machine backup
disk 4: bootcamp
basically I would like to keep a similar setup but so far I have seen only raid systems available for Thunderbolt 2 storage devices and I don't see the possibility to use a raid system and splitting it up the desired way.
1) in your opinion would it be a good solution to buy 3 external Thunderbolt HDD housings and use my existing HDD's?
2) so far I have seen only Thunderbolt 1 housing's without HDD's. but am I right that 10GB/sec is enough for read/write data transfer-speed?
3) or should I change my old habit and get used to a Raid-system and use Thunderbolt 2? (but what to do with bootcamp and time-machine?)
my second concern is about my 2 displays I use that are connected via DVI:
4) will a "simple" DVI adapter to Mini DisplayPort do the job in connecting my displays or do I need a special adapter?

5) what device would you guys recommend for reading and burning CD/DVD's with the new MP?

Same issue here. Here's my suggestion:
1. Purchase a Pegasus2 R4 empty RAID from the Apple store. Thunderbolt2. Move your drives there. If you want to keep your same setup, you're done, but then you are losing the advantage of not having the redundancy of RAID, such as RAID5, RAID10, or RAID6.
2. Purchase Apple's minidisplay port to DVI adapters for $99 ea.
3. Lots of options for CD/DVDs. Here's one that was designed for the new MacPro: http://www.numac.co or use the existing ones in your old MacPro, as explained below.
While I wait for my MacPro to arrive, I am using a MBAir 2013, a MacPro 2006, a 30" cinema display, a bluetooth keyboard & trackpad, and a Pegasus2 with four new 4TB drives (Seagate NAS) in a RAID6 yielding 8TB of storage with dual redundancy (two drives can fail out of 4). The old MacPro is connected via wifi file/display/CD&DVD sharing. The MBAir is connected to the Pegasus2 which also is connected to the cinema display. The MB Air's lid is closed and accessed with Apple's bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. Not only do I have 8TB of new storage, but I can access all the drives in the old MacPro. The two CD/DVD drives on the MacPro remain available, if needed. I will get rid of the old MacPro once the new one arrives and replace the MB Air with the new MacPro, so I will need to buy an external CD/DVD drive. 8TB of storage is enough.

DVD/BD Quality Tradeoff for source movie from SVHS

I imported a 2.5 GB MP4 home movie into Elements 12 on my Mac. The original source was a SVHS home movie from over 10 years ago. I had encoded it to MP4 using a third party application/cable. I did no editing in PE, just had it add the automatic chapter breaks every 10 minutes. I have a DVD/BD burner attached to the Mac. I selected Share -> DVD. The popup window gave me an option to adjust the quality (slider). I could vary it from the lowest (somewhere around 2 GB) to the highest (8+ GB). I chose 4.2 GB (the most that it would let me fit on the DVD).
My question is this....is it worth burning it at the higher encoding rate onto bluray? I have Bluray disks, so I could burn it at the higher encoding rate. But given that the original MP4 file was 2.5 GB, going to an 8+ GB file seems just like extra bytes of noise....and when you consider that the original source was SVHS, seems like it would add little value....just longer burn time.
BTW, thanks Adobe ...Encoding the 2 hr video took just over 10 minutes.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions from the experts.....I plan on burning the same thing to BD tonight, but I don't know that I would know enough to notice any artifacts.

What is the frame size and frame rate of this .mp4 that had its origins in S VHS? If you have 720 x 480 NTSC or 720 x 576 PAL, taking that to Blu-ray (1920 x 1080) is likely a not so good idea, pixelation expected??
I am coming from a Windows perspective; nonetheless, Premiee Elements Windows and Mac basic operations are essentially the same.
1. We need to define the properties of the video that you imported into Premiere Elements. Based on that, we need to make sure that we or the program are setting the project preset to match the properties of that source media.
2. When you get to Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc, you want to be working with a check mark next to Fit Content to Available Space. The only time I would leave that option unchecked is if I were getting a data rate error message and was forced to set the bitrate lower to a value that will allow me to continue The maximum bitrate is 8.00 Mbps (megabits per second). With the option checked, the program automatically lowers the bitrate, when necessary, from 8.00 downward to allow the fit. With your manual bitrate, I am not sure what you set since there is no bitrate 4.2 GB, possibily 4.2 Mbps?? And, if 4.2 Mbps, that low value would compromise the quality of your results.
a. When you got to the burn dialog and, if you had a check mark next to "Fit Content to Available Space", what did the burn dialog Quality Area show for Space Required and Bitrate?
b. What did you select as the preset? If your .mp4 footage was 4:3, did you select NTSC or PAL Dolby DVD; if you .mp4 footage was 16:9, did you select NTSC or PAL_Widescreen Dolby DVD?
Let us start by sorting out the basic information. With that we can better plan workflow strategy.

Don't have a Svhs cable converter

Hi!
I was given by a friend a Geforce4 MX440 AGP8X, as I had no graphics card of my own.
It works like a charm, but the thing is I want to connect it to the TV.
The Svhs port looks very strange, its got like 10 holes or something. I talked to a computer company and they say i need a converter that came with the card. Thing is my friend has moved, and i have no way to contact him.
Does anybody know how to solve this? I'd gladly buy a new cable like this, but the computer companies i've talked to say they don't sell them, except with the cards.

SVHS Deck comparisons

Don't know if any of you still use these, or would have knowledge on SVHS decks. But I was wondering what the difference between the Sony SLV-R5UC and the JVC S-VHS HR-S3800U was. Other than extra features one or the other may have. And despite both being SVHS, will the picture quality be any different?
I can get the Sony for $120, and the JVC for $40. I am planning to hook them up to my system via ADS Pyro A/V firewire link. And use FCP to capture the video, so I can transfer some VHS tapes to DVD. As well, I would like to use them to record TV segments, and transfer to DVD. Which one would suite my needs best?

A TBC (Time Base Corrector) cleans up or replaces the sync signal in analog video. Essentially it makes sure that each TV scan line starts at the right place and time so you don't get those wavy vertical lines so common in color-under formats like VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, 3/4", 8mm, Hi8 and BetaMax. A TBC is probably the best thing you can add to the signal path for overall image quality. Many stand alone TBCs also include proc amp controls for adjusting chroma, phase, contrast, brightness and YC delay (color shift predominant in red hues).
I understand about wanting to make chapters, menus, etc. Most of the current crop of DVD recorders have automatic chapter marks at preset intervals (10 min, 15 min, etc), although almost all of them will let you create a simple menu from them. And as I said above, if you get a model with a built-in hard drive, you can edit out segments you don't want before you burn to disc.
If you decide to go to tape with the TV programs, I would suggest going to a digital format ... use a Sony DSR-11 (or similar). With the large shell DV tapes you can get up to 3 hours per tape. The quality won't suffer from the generational and resolution loss of VHS/S-VHS.

Best export settings for SVHS video from Premiere Elements 12

when I view my SVHS video on screen via premiere elements 12 the quality looks very good. However, when I edit the video and save, the quality is quite poor.
I need to know what is the best settings to save my video. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thank you Tom

I have some questions to ask and some suggestions to make for your consideration after you have concluded your discussions with SG.
1. Am I assuming correctly that you used a firewire connection for your ADVC-55 capture? And, if so, what did you capture into - Premiere Elements 12 Capture Windows to give you DV AVI Type 2? In the gspot readout (to the left of the dialog), what does it say about the Container.
2. Assuming that you have DV AVI Type 2 (4:3) files saved to your computer hard drive, have you tried
For DVD-VIDEO PAL Standard Format on DVD disc
a. Open Premiere Elements 12 new project to Expert workspace, File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings....Change project preset to PAL DV Standard....before leaving that area, making sure you have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project".
b. Then back in the Premiere Elements 12 workspace, Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag you DV AVI to the Timeline.
c. After edits and maybe menu application,
Publish+Share/Disc/DVD burn to disc
check mark next to "Fit Content to Available Space"
Preset = PAL Dolby DVD
Before hitting Burn in the burn dialog, note what the readings are in the burn dialog for Space Required and Bitrate. If the Bitrate is 8.00 Mbps at that point, that is good. More on that later.
For Export To File (AVCHD.mp4)
If you want to export, your Timeline to a file saved to the computer hard drive, please consider

Audio Sync from SVHS capture

okay, my head is about to explode. We have captured about 8 hours of SVHS footage using an AJA IOLa, using the DV/NTSC preset, 29.97fps, audio at 48K, no one can remember if we set it for non-drop or drop frame. The problem we have is that the audio drifts out of sync very badly. Any ideas?
BTW, running 10.4.8, 5.1.2, everything is up to date on this machine(G5 DP, 1.5 gigs, G-Raids, etc.).

You can search here for hundreds of threads on drifting audio. The causes are way too numerous to attempt to diagnose from where I sit but here are some.
The problem is usually caused by your transcoding or input system. If you are patching your VHS into a DV camcorder and coming in on FW, things should stay locked. If your deck is from Canon, you have a BIG probme right there and you must use my method to make the clips the same length. Canon's DV codec is non-standard. You can easily correct the issue with my previous post by rendering the audio.
If you are coming in through a capture card, you need to talk to the mfr of the card.
The other question is why are you trying to bring that much material into FCP? Try dubbing it to a DV tape and capture only what you need.

SVHS input to Mac OSX (iMovie)

I would like to find a way to input a SVHS tape directly into my MAC (either iBook G4 or Power mac Tower . . from there I would import to iMovie. I can/have burned DVD's from SVHS but once DVD burned I cannot re-import to "improve" my original DVD presentation. I'm doing this . . hopefully . . for preparation of a Video version of a "family history book". Any help, tips, suggestions gratefully accepted. thanks

you need an analogue/digital convertor
this converts the signal from the vcr into digital video
there are many on the market, some produced compressed video, some dv, some both
if you want one that will produce dv then the canopus advc55 is a basic option, it has s-video and composite inputs, it connects to the mac with firewire
dv is a bulky format so you'll need disk space, and the system needs to be fast enought to handle the data rate, so check the spec. of your mac against the requirements of the convertor
if the source video has any noise/other problems, it might be worth considering a more sophisticated (and expensive) adc that can clean up the signal

DVI is video only so you only need one port... if you were hooking up audio and video you'd need three (1 for video - 2 for the left/right audio channels)

I need to upgrade my external hard drive, any suggestions

I have an iMac i5 quad core (2010 model), I have been using a Seagate Barracuda 250 GB 7200 RPM from an older iMac 20" G5 in an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Firewire 400/USB 2.0/1.1 enclosure as my backup external HD. The enclosure has the Oxford 911 chipset and says that it supports up to 750GB.
Since I have been using Snow Leopard only I have used time machine to backup to this HD. Now, that I have installed Lion, and partitioned my HD on my computer to have both Lion and Snow Leopard OS, I need to get a larger external HD to install in my OWC enclosure to save money.
I was looking on the OWC website and found a SeaGate 2.0TB Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 64MB, 5900 RPM for $90.00, or the 7200 RPM for $158.00.
I am not sure if my enclosure with the Oxford 911 chipset will support this drive, and also the specs for my enclosure says up to 750GB, and that probably rules out these drives anyway.
I could just keep what I have and use it as a back up of my Lion partition currently using 134 GB. Snow Leopard using 127 GB on my internal 1TB hard drive. Then, I could purchase the OWC Mercury Elite Pro 2.0 TB Firewire 400/USB 2.0/1.1 with the Oxford 934 chipset, 5900 RPM, and 64 MB for $150.00. Even thought this would be a little slower, is it worth paying $40.00 more for the 7200 RPM speed?
On my hard drive now I am only using 261 GB, so after I first back up both partitions on the 2.0 TB external HD, any other backups would not take as long to do. I have Super Duper, but right now it is not recognizing my Lion HD, and I have not backed up Lion to my current external HD yet since I want to get a larger external HD. When I get the new HD, I can partition it so that I can backup either Lion partition or SL partition using time machine, it that right? My current external HD is bootable, but I am confused about Carbon Copy or Super Duper, will that be saved on my external HD?

How large of a hard drive can I install on dual G5, and do I need more RAM?

I recently had a situation in which my dual-processor 2.0 G5 was completely refurbished by Apple repair-new logic board, both processors, video card, thermistor, all new. Finally it has been working well after a month of trips back and forth from the Apple store. I have two internal hard drives installed on my G5, both 300GB, one for OS applications, and one for audio. I am running out of space on my main hard drive, and so I recently purchased a Maxtor 1TB hard drive, now manufactured by Seagate, from Fry's. After having my G5 refurbished, I was having an issue with my Samsung 930B monitor going into sleep mode when I boot-up from a CD, but other than that G5 was working fine. I removed the main 300GB hard drive from slot #1 and put it into slot #2, from which I had removed my audio hard drive. I installed the Maxtor drive in slot #1 and reformatted it for Mac using my laptop with ATA/USB cables previously purchased for data transfer. This took about 14 hours as I used the "zeros" option. After that I hooked up the internal cables to both drives and tried to boot up from Leopard in order to install it on the Maxtor drive, but again my monitor went into to sleep mode. We went to the Apple store to try to see if there was an issue with the computer, but everything worked fine with their monitors and CD's, as well as my CD. So there is some kind of issue with my monitor, probably software as it works fine when booting up from the main hard drive, and also was fine when I did its self-test function. While at the Apple store, they installed Leopard from their hard drive which took about 30 minutes.
My problem is this: When I arrived home, I turned on my G5, which had been set to boot from my new Maxtor drive and complete the Leopard setup process, which we had decided to do at home as it would have taken another 20 minutes in the Apple store. The G5 turned on, chimed, I got the Apple screen with the wheel, but then after that my monitor goes into sleep mode. I can hear Leopard's setup intro playing through the speakers, but the screen is in sleep mode. So I reboot holding down the option key so I can boot up from my old (300GB) main hard drive, now in slot #2. This works and the monitor screen does not go to sleep. However, as I am browsing on the web to check for issues concerning this monitor, the G5 freezes, and I get a screen with black bars with writing in them and various technical language across the screen. This happened several times after rebooting. Finally I shut the computer down. I am going to try removing the new hard drive and putting both old ones back in and see if the G5 stops crashing. I think the monitor issue is a separate issue, and I am more concerned with the crashing, as previous to the new hard drive installation the G5 was working fine, monitor fine, other than the issue when booting up from a CD. Do I need more memory? Is the 1TB hard drive too large for my dual-processor 2.0 G5 and overloading it? Would I be better off with a 500GB drive? Would appreciate advice from persons with experience in this area. Thank you.

I have replaced my 5 year old G5 with a Mac Pro, as the G5 just had too many issues, even after replacing all major components (logic board, both processors, video card, etc.) Once I took out the 1 TB hard drive from my old G5, it stopped having the kernel panic issue. Nonetheless I had been through a lengthy repair process previous to this issue, so I didn't care to trust an older machine any longer, especially since being told by an Apple tech that the "new" parts were really just older parts stockpiled from a central location. Could be new, could be refurbished. Apple was kind enough to credit the money we had spent on the G5 repairs towards the purchase of my Mac Pro.

Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
Disk Utility reports three things:
1. Incorrect number of thread records
2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0) [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
- I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
- I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
Here is the BAD:
- My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
- I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?

Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!

Need to a voltage converter to run US-bought 110v HP Printers in 220v Pakistan any recommendations?

I Purchased Three Printers
1.
HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525dn(CF116A)
2.
HP Color LaserJet Enterprise CP4025n Printer(CC489A)
3.
HP LaserJet P2055d Printer (CE457A) -
All of them three operates on 110v USA. but i need them to use in 220V . Can anyone recommend me any good Voltage converter ?

Hi,
Before go out to buy a converter/transformer (you need over 2KW for all 3 of them), please check the switches at the back, they may have switches to switch from 110V to 220V. I don't know your market, my suggestion: talk with an electrician who knows the real world much better.

Step-by-Step Help Needed for Deploying Some Adobe Software

We are a K-12 educational institution. I am currently working at setting up a computer lab with about 16 MacMini computers.
I'm VERY new to the realm of servers, deployment, using terminal, etc.
I've done lots of research to make it to where I am, but just can't wrap my head around what needs done next with the Adobe products.
I am using Server OSX (v3) and DeployStudio (v 1.6.3) to try and manage the computers.
Both my server and clients are running Mavericks 10.9.
I deployed my core images successfully and would like to now send Adobe products only the computers I choose since I have limited licenses.
We have volume licenses of Adobe InDesign CS6 and Photoshop Elements 12 that we would like to deploy.
I have been referencing the following sites, but just can't seem to wrap my head around the EXACT steps that need to be taken.

For Adobe InDesign CS6 - I've done the following:
Created an "Installation Package" using Adobe Application Manager Enterprise Edition (AAMEE v6.2.112.0) using the following instructions.

If I log into the client computer, put the package ON the client computer, and run it...it takes me through the install and works wonderfully.It's not automated like I wanted/thought I set it up to do. I have to click through the steps of the installer.
If I try to deploy it using the "Package install" Workflow in DeployStudio...it loads it during the workflow, then skips through it, acts like it installed it, but it isn't actually installed.Is there a setting that I need to possibly change somewhere?
For Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 - I'm a bit lost and mostly just have questions:
I know that I can't use AAMEE and need to use APTEE (Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition).
How do I deploy the software? Create my own Package using PackageMaker?
Which computer do I run APTEE on? All the instructions I can find just say, "do this" - but don't specify where.
Do I have to open terminal and run the commands on each client computer AFTER installing PE12?
OR
Do I run the commands BEFORE deployment on my package stored on my server that is ready for deployment?
It really comes down to me just not 100% understanding how APTEE works.
I hope that pertrays my dilemma. I've tried to explain best I can. If you have any questions - let me know!
