Need to run a PowerBook with NO INTERNAL display on an External display

So basically I have a TiBook that has had the display removed. I plan to run the machine using my lcd tv. Well, after hooking everything up, all I get is a blue screen. I'm assuming that the computer is looking for the original display. How can I have the computer ignore the internal and run off the external only?
Message was edited by: kipiscool

Easiest way would be to place a small magnet over the spot in the TiBook where the magnet sensor is that detects when the lid is down. Do you still have the display? You can fish for where the magnet is located behind the display by putting it face-up on a table and using a paper clip at the end of a thread or piece of dental floss. Wherever the magnet is, the sensor would be located opposite of it.

  • Needing to run Mountain Lion with Yosemite OS

    I'm needing to run Mountain Lion and I've got a new Retina 15" MBP that shipped with Yosemite. I've been told you cannot run it on a partition with Yosemite. What is the best way to go about doing this? I'm needing to have access to Pro Tools 10 as some of my plug ins aren't AAX compatible yet. Can this be done from a USB 3.0 drive or even Firewire 800 (via thunderbolt to FW800 adapter) if I do a bootable clone? I dunno if Boot Camp allows for this kind of operation or not. Any insight would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Austin

    BootCamp is for running Windows on a Mac, not other Mac OS X versions.
    The Mac computers ship with an EFI boot ROM that will not allow booting a version of Mac OS X older than that shipped on the Mac...which means, you cannot get your new  MBPr to boot Mountain Lion since it shipped with Yosemite, two generations newer than what you want to run.
    Best bet is contact the Power Tools folks and see if they have a version that is compatible with Yosemite.

  • What Cable Do I Need To Connect My MacBook With a Cinema Display?

    Hi,
    I have got a 23" old HD Cinema Display. It is the one with the transparent plastic around the outside. I have a 13" MacBook, Oct 2008 then discontinued, the one that looks like a MacBook Pro, and I would like to connect the laptop to the display. Which cable would I need to connect the two?
    The cable coming off the cinema display has three lines on ten metal dots on the right, and a line, with two dots above and below it, on the left. On the Macbook I have got a mini dvi port.
    Thanks,

    The first problem is that the 23 inch display with oval ADC connector has no power supply. You will need something like the Apple DVI-to-ADC converter, which contains the power supply to generate the 28 Volt power at up to 4 Amps needed to run the display. This will convert your display to a DVI display with a power supply "brick" in the cable. These converter/power units are readily available on the used market and have an AC power cord.
    If your MacBook is an Aluminum body, it has a Mini DisplayPort. [Older models had a Mini DVI, where the center partition was folded into a C-shape.] Mini DisplayPort can be forced into "Single-Link DVD compatibility mode" with an inexpensive adapter. This solution works for DVI displays up through 1920 wide, beyond which you need the much more expensive Dual-Link converter. {If your had the Mini DVI, that is also a simple adapter.]

  • Installing OS X on powerbook with no internal CD drive?

    Is it possible to install OS X on a powerbook G3 (firewire) if my internal CD drive is broken? I'm trying to install 10.2.
    I've tried using a USB external CD drive, but it doesn't seem to work.
    I've also tried a bunch of other things--like trying to make a disk image of the install disks on a USB harddrive, but it won't let me pick them as startup volumes (although I can pick the USB disk itself as a startup volume, and have started from it succesfully).
    So, is this possible? This is what I have at my disposal:
    1) The powerbook G3 firewire, no CD drive, running 9.2.2
    2) An (old) APS tech USB external CD drive
    3) A (new) USB external hard drive, which I can reformat if I need
    4) A (new) Firewire external hard drive, which I can NOT reformat
    5) An iBook G4, running Tiger
    6) Toast 4.2 and 5.0
    7) The OS X 10.2 installation CDs
    I'm wondering if I can get a hold of a firewire cable and connect the iBook to the Powerbook this might help me in some way?
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Anne

    If you have access to a FireWire equipped Mac that is capable of running 10.2, then you can do it. The iBook G4 can't run 10.2, though.
    If you do manage to get access to one, here's how to do it:
    1. Start the PowerBook G3 in Target Disk Mode (hold down 't' on boot.)
    2. Connect the PowerBook G3 via FireWire to the 'host' computer. (I'll call it an iBook, just for ease of talking.)
    3. Start the host iBook up off the 10.2 CD.
    4. Install to the 'external FireWire drive' that is really the PowerBook G3.
    5. Reboot the PowerBook G3, it will be running 10.2
    I used a similar method to get Tiger onto a Lombard (USB, no FireWire) G3. I installed to a hard drive that was in a combo FireWire/USB hard drive, then 'Carbon Copy'ed that drive via USB onto the Lombard's internal drive.
    But, since your iBook requires 10.3 or newer, I don't think you can use that method with your setup. The only way you could do it is with an external FireWire CD drive. (Which IS bootable on that model.)
    Unfortunately, I know of no way of convincing the computer that an external hard drive is really a CD drive, and no way of convincing your iBook to install 10.2 onto any drive. (I just tried rebooting my 10.3+ eMac with a 10.2 install CD, no go.) Of course, if you had a legal 10.3 or 10.4 install CD/DVD, you could install one of those onto the PowerBook using the method above, since the iBook is happy to install them.

  • Simultaneously run two counters with the internal 80MHz timing

    Hi, I have a programming problem about the NI PCI-6602 counter card. I want to use the internal timing signal (80MHz) as the source signal and feed two external signals to the two counters. The operation mode is the Buffered Period Measurement.
    I can succeed in one counter programming by using these old DAQ functions calls in sequences:
        iStatus = GPCTR_Control(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_RESET);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Set_Application(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_BUFFERED_PERIOD_MSR);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_SOURCE, ND_INTERNAL_MAX_TIMEBASE);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_GATE, ND_PFI_38);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_INITIAL_COUNT, ulInitCount);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_BUFFER_MODE, ND_CONTINUOUS);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Config_Buffer(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, 0, ulCount, pulBuffer);
        iStatus = GPCTR_Control(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_PROGRAM);
        while(RunStatus)
           iStatus = GPCTR_Read_Buffer (iDevice, ulGpctrNum, readMode, readOffSet, NumPtToRead, timeOut, &NumPtRead, buffer);
           m_Chart1.DoPlot(); // Plot the data
      iStatus = GPCTR_Control(iDevice, ulGpctrNum, ND_RESET);
    But when using two counters, I tried to open two individual counter tasks by just doubling the codes above (each counter has independent DMA buffer). The program hanged forever. After debugging, the codes stop after it comes to read the 2nd DMA buffer (the 2nd line below).
      iStatus = GPCTR_Read_Buffer (iDevice, ulGpctrNum0, readMode, readOffSet, NumPtToRead, timeOut, &NumPtRead0, buffer0);
      iStatus = GPCTR_Read_Buffer (iDevice, ulGpctrNum1, readMode, readOffSet, NumPtToRead, timeOut, &NumPtRead1, buffer1);
    I also tried to check the labview codes that I have for the implementation of 2 counter measurement. There are two sets of function calls for each counter, "Counter Group Configure" -->"Source Slection" --> "Gate Selection" --> "Buffer Configure", in the same sequence structure, and two "Buffer Read" calls in a later, but also the same, sequence structure. My C programming is done just by following the labview codes above. But the labview program doesn't crash like the C program. Besides, one more question that I found is that I cannot find the fundtion "Counter_Group_ConfigInterface" inside the C function library. I tried to use the function "CTR_Simul_Op" but failed.
    So, my problem is that what's the problem about my C codes and how can I do the two counter measurement by the same internal timing base. Sorry to put all the problem in such a mess. If you need more information about my codes or my experimental requirement, please let me know. Thank you for your help!
    Sincerely,
    Jung-Cheng

    Hi Pavani,
    Welcome to the forums!  As a new LabVIEW user there are many helpful resources out there to get you started.  I would like to point you to the two links in my signature.  The first is a six hour LabVIEW course and the second helps you learn DAQmx.  Also take advantage of the shipping examples.  When you open LabVIEW select Find Examples to open the Example Finder.  Assuming you are using DAQmx, you can go to Hardware Input and Output>>DAQmx>>Counter Measurements and find many useful example programs that either do what you want or can be modified to perform the task you desire.
    To answer you question, two counters in the same loop do not affect each other.  The counters will gather data separately.  By putting them in the same loop, you just perform the reads in software at the same time.

  • Need to run SQL jobs with Non Sys-Admin account

    Hi Everyone,
    We've recently asked to switch our SQL service account from an account having sysadmin permissions to a non sys-admin account. Could you please give us any inputs on this.
    Thanks in advance. :)

    It's a little difficult to understand what you are talking about. First you say:
    We've recently asked to switch our SQL service account from an account having sysadmin permissions to a non sys-admin account. Could you please give us any inputs on this.
    No, the service account for SQL Server should not be a Windows administrator. It should be a standard Windows account. When you enter this account in SQL Server Configuration Manager, SSCM will assign the required permissions. You should then also assign
    the permissions "Lock pages in memory" and "Perform volume maintenance tasks".
    But then you start to talk about proxies and whatnots, and this is where you lose me entirely. Could you clarify what you are talking about?

  • HT3131 In terms of cooling, is it OK to use demanding applications for extended periods with the internal display of my MacBook Air closed?

    I'm using a Thunderbolt display when in the office and often run one or two Parallels VMs concurrently, which makes the fans spin a lot. I'm worried that the 13" 2011 MacBook Air isn't being cooled enough with the lid closed so I tend to open it up - am I just being paranoid?

    The cooling of the MacBook Air is accomplished via an internal fan which draws in and exhausts air in the rear gap area below the hinge. This gap remains unimpeded whether the computer is open or closed. In fact, Apple has specifically designed the notebook to operate in a "normal" open screen configuration, as well as a closed (clamshell) mode. As long as you retain an adequate clearance and allowance for clean cool airflow at the rear of the Air, there is no recognized issue of whether the unit will adequately cool.
    This does not preclude that the user can also "enhance" cooling with external conduction cooling devices designed to extract heat from the heat conductive aluminum case But in normal circumstances it is not required, nor even mentioned by Apple that it is necessary to do so. In fact, Apple even sells a stand for operating the MBA in a closed, vertical position for space savings. This does in face preclude use of a cooling pad, and still it is not a problem.
    While there may be those who observe that the open case affords more surface area for direct case to atmosphere heat transfer, one must also recognize that this is probably more than offset by the fact that the device does not generate extra heat supporting a operting and lit display when closed.

  • External Monitor on Powerbook with no display

    Alright, so here's the deal...I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium 15 inch, on which the internal display has since died. I removed the display completely and purchased an external display which has worked fine with current OS. But, I have decided to erase the disk and use Linux primarily while partitioning a small amount of space to retain Mac OS 10.4. But, after erasing the disk using the original Mac OS X 10.1 restore disc, all installer startup discs including the Software Restore, Mac 10.4, and Linux will not appear at startup, only the Mac OS x 10.1. I assume this is because the startup disk does not recognize the external monitor and assumes it is running the program on an internal display which is not there. Is there anyway I can permanently erase the internal display options, to in effect make the Powerbook act like a desktop or tower with regards to the external display? Thanks.

    If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display if you have the Early 2006 model 1,1 MacBook or the Late 2006 & Mid 2007 model 2,1 MacBooks.
    From the Mid 2007 MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).
    This won't work on the newer MacBooks.

  • Can't run .jar file with JavaSE

    Hello.
    I'm trying to run a .jar file with JavaSE Binary, just like I did with Windows. I Ctrl+Rclick and pick "Open with..." and there is no such option. I've been searching the whole day for a solution, I kept getting "Open Java Preferences... put on top of the list" and things like that. There is no "Java Preferences" in the Utilities folder, and nothing related to my problem in "Java Control Panel" in System Preferences. Yes, I have Java 7. I just need to run this file with Java. How?
    Thanks in advance.

    Max. allowed size of .jar file is 1MB.

  • I have iMac and need a good photo editing program to use.  Reviews say aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?

    I need a program where I can remove objects and touch up dead grass, etc.

    Reviews say Aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?
    To add on to Corky02 answer:
    The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
    Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing  the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or  ill-designedAperture databases.
    Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also  repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
    To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
    But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

  • Need to run windows on new imac with lion.  where do i get windows for mac?

    I have a new iMac and am new to Apple after 30+ years with PC-based hardware & software.  First of all, and not to offend, but anyone who says Mac computers are easier to use than Windows computers must be talking about people who just came out of the jungle and are seeing their first computer.  Sorry, I just needed to get that off my chest.  That aside, I have legacy software that I need to run on the Mac (actually, one of the programs is CALLED Legacy).  I'm told that if I want to use Bootcamp or Parallels software I need to install Windows on the Mac.  Is that a special kind of Windows made for Mac, or will just any old Windows do?  I've checked Bing and Google but they're so "ad-crazed" that I couldn't find anything.
    I'm sure that, after 30 more years, I'll probably have the Mac OS down and find Windows 21 (or whatever they'll call it) to be difficult to use. .

    Nope. Any flavor should work including both 32- and 64-bit versions. See these for more:
