Need to upgrade OS, but not enough space on HD

I just exported a ton of photos to an external hard drive, thinking that was the bulk of my files taking up space on my hard drive.  I need to upgrade to OS 10.6.3 (I have 10.5.8 right now), but when I try and install, it says there's not enough space.
When I click on my hard drive, it says that there's a capacity of 74.21 GB with an available space of 3.28 GB.  How do I find out what files or applications are taking up the most space?  What are the most likely offenders?  I really thought cleaning up photos was going to fix the issue, but it didn't go up in free space at all!
Thank you for your help!

Download and use OmniDiskSweeper. It will tell you the files and folders that are using the most space.
With only 3 GB of free space, your system is severely short of free space. Your free space should be at least 10 GB.
Once you increase your free space and before you do any upgrade be sure to repair your disk. With the free space run so low there is every chances that the disk is now corrupt. Doing an upgrade with a corrupt disk is a sure way to have problems after the upgrade.
Also it is necessary to backup before you do the upgrade.

iPad say 3.2gb available of 5gb,but not enough space to back up to iCloud .Whats going on?

iCloud is off-site storage. You get 5GB free. To backup, you need at least the amount used on your iPad. You have to purchase the additional space over the free 5GB.

  • Trying to upgrade to newest version of iPad software but not enough space on hard drive to backup the iPad. It is saying if I continue all content on iPad will be deleted! Can I get it back after uprade by just synching with itunes?

Trying to upgrade iPad software to newest version. It downloads but stops while backing up and says not enough space on hard drive to back up if i continue all media on iPad will be lostor deleted.  Can I get it back after upgrade by just synching or can I set it to backup to an external drive?  Thanks for any help.  I only use the laptop for itunes now as it has such little space left.

I would recommend deleting contents off your hard-drive to make space (how much is left..you should be having 15% free as a general practice) and backing up the phone prior to upgrading.

  • I've upgraded my MacPro but not enough space to do so on my 5s and iPad.  Should  I take both back to original settings and allow the update?

Not a techie here...please advise on best method to update 5s and iPad Air.

To clarify:  I have a 16g iPhone 5s and an iPad 32g and both are due for current Yosemite updates.  I successfully completed Yosemite update for MacPro.  I attempted to delete photos and music from both of the former in order to allow the download, however, still not enough space.  Also removed some apps that weren't being used.  Still not enough space.  So I thought perhaps taking both devices to original straight-from-the-box state might allow for easiest updates to download.

  • Trying to install ios on iPhone 4 but not enough space on c: drive on XP PC?

but itunes tells me i`ve not enough space on c:drive on XP PC? can I move the cache file/temp file to another drive where it has more free space??
If it only gave me the option where to back it up to and download the software to, I could point it to somewhere with loads of free gigs. ARGH can anyone help?

  • I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not enough space?

I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not there is not enough space for both files files? Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

  • Setting up but not enough space on external drive, it says

I want to back up work files rather than the whole of my hard disc. In Time Machine preferences, I've indicated for it not to back up (library, system files, applications) which leaves a total of 64.2gb to fit onto a 80gb drive. When the process starts, it tells me there's 76gb to transfer onto a drive with a capacity of 74gb.
Do I need to knock out more files from what needs to be copied or get a bigger drive or have i indicated vital files not to be copied that need to.
    Thanks
    BB

Your 80GB drive is actually not 80GB as far as OS X is concerned. This has to do with how 1GB/1MB/1kB/1byte is defined. See for instance here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
Note that TM normally requires 2 or even 2,5 times the size of the data to be backed up for the initial backup.
As for files not needed to be included, see for instance here:

    Plus search these fora.

  • Want to download movie, but not enough space.

any way to move music off temporarily to create room for video rental?

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • I have backed up my ipad to my laptop prior to updating to the latest IOS and now I want to restore the backup back onto the ipad but it says there is not enough space? I have tried unticking all apps i no longer need, music etc but this still doesnt work

I have updated up my ipad2 which had the original version on it (4.??) to the latest version of IOS. Before I did this I backed up the ipad to my laptop so I wouldnt lose precious pics and videos of my baby boy.  Now that the latest version is on the ipad it is now asking me if I want to start as a new ipad or restore my backup from itunes.  So i select restore my backup from itunes and connect to itunes but it now says there is not enough space to do so.  I have a feeling it is because there are alot of pics on our ipad which i presume are all in this backup, many of which we do not need on the ipad anymore but I have no idea on how I go about deleting these pics??  And how do I find where on my laptop this backup is and most importantly the video and pics of my baby boy.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

  • Upgrading IOS on router - not enough space

    Hi,
I need to upgrade the IOS on an 878 but there's not enough space to hold both images on flash at the same time - what's the best way to go about this? I've read somewhere that you name the new image the same as the old and overwrite, but I'm not sure if this is right. Also the less risk involved the better!
    Many thanks,
    J

That's a new one to me. Certainly doesn't reduce your risk and if you ask me it's safer to delete your current IOS file and upload your new one. For more safety, you can add the USB flash device with the new image.

It's telling you there's not enough space *on your 4S*.  The 25GB you refer to is probably that on iCloud, that's different memory than that on your iPhone.  You need to delete video, pictures, apps, or whatever ON THE IPHONE, to make enough room for downloading updates to your apps.

  • I am trying to download Final Cut Pro, but it keeps telling me there is not enough space on my hard drive even though there is. Help?

I realized that my laptop only has 2GB of memory. It's a MacBook Pro 13in bought in 2009. Is it true that I'm able to upgrade up to 8GB of memory. Seems like 4GB of space is a lot for a single program to be running.. A bummer I'll have to save up for more memory.

  • HT1766 Restore backup function says there is not enough space on my iPhone to restore backup. How do I fix this/how do I know how much space I need on my iPhone?

My family member's iPhone recently erased all of its contact information, with no action taken by my family member. She is trying to use the restore backup function to recover her contacts.
The restore backup functions says that there is not enough space on my iPhone to restore backup. How do I fix this/how do I know how much space I need to complete this backup?
We have removed the majority of pictures from her phone, and she has 4.1 GB of memory free.
    Thank you!

You need at least as much space as you have used on the iPod. Could be as much as 64 GB but is probably much less.
Find a way to delete what you do not need on the computer. Start by emptying the Recycle Bin.

trying to restore from iTunes back onto iPhone 5 - it starts but then error msg comes up saying there is not enough space on the iPhone to complete the restore - what do I do? - Help cos I've lost my contacts!!!!!

If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades.
