Neither systemctl suspend nor pm-suspend work

Hi everyone!
I am experiencing an odd situation here: my laptop does not wake up when suspended, nieither systemctl suspend nor pm-suspend work. The following happens: it goes to sleep, but when resuming, it simply reboots.
But the funny thing is that pm-hibernate works perfectly.
I have tried everything:
systemctl + laptop-mode-tools
acpid + systemctl
acpid + pm-utils
acpid + pm-utils + laptop-mode-tools
pm-utils
pm-utils + laptop-mode-tools
everytime is a failure: my laptop does not wake up. And journalctl does not say anything illuminating.
Of course, gnome-power-manager is installed.
Is there any configuration or something that I am supposed to be aware of?
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
best regards,
and-bnk

I don't know about pm-utils... I don't think it would actually be in charge of shutting down your computer on its own. I have pm-utils installed but it never caused me any grief like that.
systemd can handle shutting down, suspending, hibernating, maybe some other things. It decides what to do and what not to do in response to various button presses by looking at the file /etc/systemd/logind.conf. If you want systemd to stop handling power, then here is what I did on my system:
1. Back up /etc/systemd/logind.conf.
2. Uncomment the lines in that file that say "HandlePowerKey=", "HandleBlahBlah=", and so on, changing their values to "ignore" (for example, "HandlePowerKey=ignore". This prevents systemd from taking action when these buttons are pressed.
3. Uncomment the lines that say "BlahBlahIgnoreInhibited=", and set them to yes. This prevents programs from telling your computer not to suspend and so on.
You might have to reboot. I don't know when logind sources that file.
Here is mine:

Modify according to your needs. And then set up your acpid. Make sure that's running, and write your /etc/acpi/handler.sh . Here is a link that can tell you how to do it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acpid
Hope that helps.

    Hi all:
The problem was caused by the NVIDIA driver 173xx branch . I switched to version 304.60 and "systemctl suspend" works fine.
    Thanks!

  • Neither Flash Player nor Java working on Windows 8.1 with IE 11

I have a new sony laptop with Windows 8 and IE 11.  I have upgraded to Windows 8.1.  Neither Flash Player nor Java are working despite having made all the recommended settings. Adobe recommends upgrading to Flash Player 12.00.38, but I can seem to get it installed.
Whats wrong and how do I fix it?

Flash Player for IE in Windows 8 and 8.1 is embedded by Microsoft and you cannot update it here. It MUST be updated via Windows Update.
The fatc that Java isn't working as well leads me to believe you have other problems, but IE11 (comes with Windows 8.1) has been a "rolling train wreck" since the day it was released. Websites and pages can't recognize the browser, so they don't recognize any of the plugins, like Flash Player. So far, Microsoft has made NO indication that they have any plan to fix it soon.
Microsoft's recommendation is to use Compatibility View for affected pages, and "pretend" you're using an different browser. Trouble with that is it has seen limited success at best, and you have to individually enable it for EVERY page that has problems.
I'm not big on "pretending" so I recommend actually using another browser.
    Firefox (from Mozilla)
    Opera (from Opera)
    Safari (from Apple)
    Chrome (from Google)
ANY of those will work where IE11 won't, with the Flash Player Plug-in (For all other browsers), and Chrome doesn't even need that because it has its own Flash Player plugin built in.

If you have not done so, try exiting the Photo app (and maybe more apps if you have a lot open) from the Open Apps List and see if a discount/reconnect opens the app. If that does not work, try powering down the iPad and test. If it is still not working try a hard reset by pressing both Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time until the Apple graphic appears, ignoring the Slide to Power Off button.

  • Force kde 4.11 use systemctl suspend

If I suspend with KDE sometime (not all times) I will resume to a black screen.
Using "systemctl suspend" is working fine.
Is it possible to force kde to use systemctl suspend?

This is not systemd when you can specify arguments using the @. Save it as suspend.desktop or howDoYouLikeMore.desktop.

  • How does "systemctl suspend" mess with my sound?

    Hi there,
I just wanted to say I am really impressed with the desktop handling of systemd and dbus. It's so easy to use all the nice applets across different WMs. Cool
Now there are however still things that amaze me. How can happen that when I suspend my system "systemctl suspend", that means my sound might be messed up, when I get back to my system and even after a restart?
I am not looking for the answer, I will find that sooner or later, but it's the logic I want to get. It's just not something I expect or even remotely relate.
tl;dr How does a suspend screw up my sound system??
    Best,
    Magum

Maybe it's resetting or not restoring sound? You have a systemd unit files called:
    My Terminal wrote:alsa-restore.service                        static
    alsa-state.service                          static
    alsa-store.service                          static
I think you need alsa-store and alsa-restore. But I'm not sure.
If it doesn't work with suspend (but it does with reboot) then you might have to add a WantedBy to sleep.target.

  • X200s tried to add webcam - now neither webcam, nor thinklight will work

    Hi all,
So, as the username hopefully indicates - a newbie to the x200s, which I bought recently, though I've been using thinkpad products for a few years now (a devoted fan!)
My x200s did not come with a webcam and, since I am thousands of miles from home, I reckoned I would try and install one manually. Note that I have swaped its HDD for an SD & changed keyboard in the past with no problem, so I was assuming (foolishly, perhaps!) that vaguely knew what I was doing.
I followed the instructions and user experiences on this thread, I purchased this camera - and got off to work.
Even though everything seemed fine when adding the camera to the system, a strange thing happened after I rebooted (I run Linux Mint 16): neither the webcam, nor the thinklight were now working. After lots of testing, I assumed I must have just destroyed part of the cable during installation, and so I purchased this cable (Lenovo ThinkPad X200 LCD Video Cable 44C9909) and tried again. Same result! The only difference is that the first time round, an "lsusb" command on linux would return a Ricoh product (and I assume that's the webcam), but it would still not be recognised by Mint, while now, there's nothing. In both cases, the Thinklight didn't work.
Since both the thinklight and the webcam come out at the same end (see the right end of the cable on this picture) I am assuming, of course, that the two are related.
Would anyone know which of the clips on the left end of the cable on the same picture, above, correspond to the webcam and the thinklight?
Thanks for reading, and any response and thoughts on the above would be most appreciated - a little bit at loss at to what to do now.

    Hi,
perhaps HMM and Service Video might help.
Be sure integrated camera is enabled in the BIOS Setup menu.

  • Neither Automatically Resize nor Zoom to Fit working

    Hello out there in Appleland,
Neither Automatically Resize nor Zoom to Fit is working in Preview 5.0.3 under Snow Leopard.  Zoom to Fit acts just like Actual Size or <Command> 0 and Automatically resize doesn't work at all.  This must be and bug, so please explain how this can be permanently fixed, even at the command line level.
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Bob
    Denver, CO

I've found out a little more about Preview and its bug through a process of elimination.
After examining Automatically Resize for Preview 3.0.9 on my old PowerBook G4 with OS 10.4.11, Preview 4.1 on my iMac with OS 10.5.8, and now Preview 5.0.3 on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8, I discovered they all work the same way.  When Automatically Resize is checked the image is only resized when the window is reduced but never when the window is enlarged to a size greater than the image's Actual Size, which is a worthless feature for smaller images.  I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work, but I may be wrong.
Where 5.0.3 differs from the other versions of Preview is in Zoom to Fit.  Under the View Menu, Zoom to Fit is grayed out unless the image stretches beyond the borders of the window (i.e. Automatically Resize toggled off).  In this case, the image will be reduced to the size of the window when Zoom to Fit is selected.  On the other hand, if the image is smaller than the size of the window, Zoom to Fit is not grayed out but neither does it enlarge the image to the size of the window when selected.  In other words, Zoom to Fit in 5.0.3 is only good for reducing an image to fill a smaller window but never for enlarging an image to fill a bigger window if that window is larger than the Actual Size of the image.
Perhaps the problem is with Preview 5.0.3 failing to access com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist since removing all the Preview plists and launching the application anew does not recreate this particular plist.  Also, the modified date on the original com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist never seems to change.
This is a damned annoying bug and should have been fixed when Snow Leopard was the standard.  In my opinion, the fact that this wasn't caught reveals Apple's slipping standards and a concentration on their growing market in mobile devices.  I feel I have a right to say this since I've been a loyal Mac user since the early 1980s.
For those who suggest I move to Lion or beyond, you can keep the economy going with your new software purchases.  For now, I'm going to continue using Rosetta and my old, third-party applications in Snow Leopard.
