Nest AS3 swf into AS2 swf

I purchased a flash template written in AS2, i have all files needed to customize this site, .fla, psd's you name it. I also purchased a photo gallery that is written in AS3 (did not know it was AS3 when purchased) . My question: is there any way to embed/nest the AS3 photo gallery, which i the swf file for, into my AS2 website?

Per AS3 documentation:
A single SWF file cannot combine ActionScript 1.0 or 2.0 code with ActionScript 3.0 code.
SWF files written in ActionScript 1.0 or 2.0 cannot load SWF files written in ActionScript 3.0. This means that SWF files authored in Flash 8 or Flex Builder 1.5 or earlier versions cannot load ActionScript 3.0 SWF files.
The only exception to this rule is that an ActionScript 2.0 SWF file can replace itself with an ActionScript 3.0 SWF file, as long as the ActionScript 2.0 SWF file hasn't previously loaded anything into any of its levels.

• AS3 issue embedding AS2 .swf files

Hi there,
I'm attempting to create a menu navigation system with Flash/AS3 that opens up a series of older AS2 activities.
At the moment I'm testing it with two buttons/two activities.
The problem I'm having is that when I'm testing the navigation, the first button clicked will open its respective activity correctly, which can then be shut down using the original activity's exit button, and return to the two buttons on my AS3 menu. However, if I then select the other activity from the same screen, it won't load. I'm able to click the original activity again, and have it open, but not the new one.
If I test the main flash navigation file again and click the other button first (that wasn't working), the other activity opens fine, and can be closed down. However the first button now won't open the activity. So both the buttons work (if they're the first ones clicked), but from then on, only the first button clicked works.
In the debug panel, it looks as if the AS2 .swf files that I'm attempting to embed are themselves embedding a wrapper.swf file (with navigation buttons) as well as another sub set of shared .swf files for their own operation. Might it possible that these sub swf files aren't being unloaded properly when I switch between the main AS2 movies from my menu system?
Is there a way to clear/unload everything that's been loaded (even resources loaded by the external files themselves - like a hard reset) between button presses?
I have no access to the original AS2 code as this was done by another team years back.
I'd be really grateful for any help or advice that anyone might be able to give.
Thanks

Just looking at the debugging panel, this is what I see when I try and run the program:
Attempting to launch and connect to Player using URL /*****/*****/****.swf
[SWF] Volumes:Data:Documents:*****:****:****:*****.swf - 876582 bytes after decompression
[SWF] Volumes:Data:Documents:*****:****:****:*****:F11_pr_qu_3:quiz.swf - 176016 bytes after decompression
LocateFolders.enginesFolder(file:///*****/****/****/*****/F11_pr_qu_3/quiz.swf)
[SWF] Volumes:Data:Documents:*****:****:****:*****:F11_pr_qu_3:wrapper.swf - 481279 bytes after decompression
### Latest wrapper ###
etc etc...
Then follows a whole set of loading instructions and trace instructions put in the as2 swf which show XML files being loaded and the program launching. These must have been put in place by the previous programmer.
When I click the exit button on the 'embedded' swf, the debugging panel shows things shutting down:
ActivityToolbar clickQuit()
Wrapper quitActivity()
EndGame clear(false)
Now when I click the second button, I should see a similar set of launching greetings etc. instead it bottles out at the following:
[SWF] Volumes:Data:Documents:*****:****:****:*****:F11_wb_fc_1:flashcards.swf - 94720 bytes after decompression
LocateFolders.enginesFolder(file:///file:///*****/****/****/*****/F11_wb_fc_1/flashcards.s wf)
And there it stops.
If I restarted the program and pressed the second button first, it would show the flashcards.swf activity loading correctly, but would then refuse to load the first activity when I clicked on the button.

• How to upload a swf into another swf??

Hi, forgive my ignorance for I am new to the programming world!
I have a game and I'm trying to get it so when the user presses a button, it cuts to the menu screen (a separate swf file)
Now I know how to do this in AS2 -
next_btn.onPress = function() {
loadMovie("car1.swf","_level0");
But I want to learn how to do it in AS3! I've searched on a few websites for the possible code, but they've all left me feeling very confused and with this:
next_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, menu);
function menu(e:MouseEvent): void {
var loadit = new Loader();
addChild(loadit);
loadit.load(new URLRequest("menu.swf"));
Now, I have no idea what the last 3 lines of that code means and it doesn't appear to work either...
If anyone could help me that would be swell!

The code you show should work so long as you have a button with that instance name in the frame where the code is (different layer, preferably) and an swf file by that name in the directory where you've saved this file.
If you want to begin to understand the code try reading thru the help documentation for the Loader class.

• Need help embedding photo gallery swf into main swf...

So I am attempting to create a website in flash and have the
main swf created for that. However, I've also created a photo
gallery in a separate swf which I want to embed into one of the
scenes in the main swf. I tried importing directly to stage, but
quickly realized that the timeline from the photo swf would not get
carried over. Basically, I know that it has to be accomplished
using AS, but don't know what that script would be. Any help would
be appreciated!

OK, well, that wasn't really a tutorial as much as it was
just a huge section of code I couldn't make sense of. Anyways,
instead of loading the gallery externally now I decided to just
make it in the actual main swf. So, basically, in the section of
the main swf reserved for the gallery I created an empty movie
clip, went inside the clip, created layers for script, thumbs and
photos. The photos themselves were in a movieclip of their own.
Each photo has a small fade in accomplished by staggering the
keyframes for each photo with a stop(); action on the last frame of
each photo where it comes to full opacity. The thumbnails are back
in the main movieclip where each button has code telling it to go
to the beginning of each photos transition and play. It is supposed
to play until it hits that stop action, but it won't play at all.
Suggestions?

• Need help loading and positioning a swf into a swf

This is the swf I'm trying to load.
These actions load and position a small simple swf just fine and the trace in the onLoadProgress function indicates that it loads completely
but I can't see it. What am I doing wrong?
this.createEmptyMovieClip("container_mc", this.getNextHighestDepth());
var my_listener:Object = new Object();
my_listener.onLoadComplete = function(target_mc:MovieClip) {
target_mc._x = 150;
target_mc._y = 100;
my_listener.onLoadProgress = function(target_mc:MovieClip) {
trace(target_mc.getBytesLoaded() + " out of " + target_mc.getBytesTotal());
var my_loader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
my_loader.addListener(my_listener);
//my_loader.loadClip("little.swf", container_mc);
my_loader.loadClip("cam01.swf", container_mc);

do you see a rotated swf if you use:
this.createEmptyMovieClip("container_mc", 1);
var my_listener:Object = new Object();
my_listener.onLoadInit = function(target_mc:MovieClip) {
target_mc._x = 150;
target_mc._y = 100;
target_mc._rotation = 22;
var my_loader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
my_loader.addListener(my_listener);
my_loader.loadClip("cam01.swf", container_mc);
if yes, either:
1. you are repositioning your swf and for some reason don't recognize that or
2. you're changing container_mc or one of its parents _x,_y properties elsewhere.

• Help a Newbie - Need to Embed swfs into main swf

I have made a MAIN SWF in which if you click one button, it
loads one SWF, if you click another button, it loads another SWF.
The file works perfectly when I test the MAIN SWF...until I
relocate that MAIN SWF to another file, then it doesn't load the
internal SWFS. How do I publish the MAIN SWF with the other two
SWFS embedded? So that my client only has to upload one single SWF
file and not host the internal ones somewhere?
Hope this makes sense...Flash is completely foreign to me, so
be gentle. Thanks!

Treat Flash as any other content and place it within its own
containing div. Position the div in the normal flow of the document
allowing the div to 'stack' with the other divs above and below it.
If you want to place the Flash such that it 'covers' existing
content you can use CSS positioning techniques. Options include
absolute positioning the containing div with the Flash swf within
it (this removes the div from the normal flow of the document) and
placing it over the existing content. Us position: absolute; and
top and left, with px values to place the div where you need it.
You can find tutorials on absolute positioning in the developer
center or www.communitymx.com
You can use the float property and negative margins to pull
containing divs (or other elements) around the document, too.
Experimenting with floats can be fun but you need to read up on
their specific behavior as you can end up pulling your hair out.
Again, there are plenty of CSS tutorials on positioning and a
Google search should throw-up some options.
Outside of CSS you can use DOM Scripting and JavaScript to
also position and hide various content depending on your
requirements. If you get stuck come back on this forum and ask for
more help but provide specific code to help us.

• Textbox shows xml text in working file but now when loaded into another SWF

Hi all,
I have downloaded an xml gallery (as2) as we needed one for an old as2 file. Now I mostly use as3 but thought as I only needed to tweak it there would be no probs. Of course, it rarely works out that way. The problem is, text loaded from the xml file is displayed with its corresponding image. This works fine in the file. When I load the SWF into another SWF however, it all works EXCEPT the text doesn't show at all?? Whoever made the gallery used 'device fonts' in the textbox, I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I tried changing the textbox to dynamic and embedding characters but still nothing.
This seems the key line -
_root.descmc.desc.htmlText = XMLdaten[number];
I have also tried
_root.descmc.desc.htmlText = XMLdaten[number].firstChild;
This traces out the correct xml data when tested so it is finding it okay.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The problem might be in the use of the "_root" You probably need to set _lockroot = true; in the loaded swf, otherwise the _root is that of the loading swf, not the loaded one.

• Can I load a swf into my Flex app that loads other swf's?

The code below loads an AS2 swf into my Flex mobile for IOS app and it works. If that AS2 swf has like a circle in it that runs across the stage, it loads and displays properly when run in FlashBuilder.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
initialize="init()">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.core.UIComponent;
private var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://PATH_TO_AS2_SWF");
private var loader:Loader = new Loader();
private var myComponent:UIComponent = new UIComponent;
private function init():void{
myComponent.percentHeight = 100;
myComponent.percentWidth = 100;
loader.load(request);
myComponent.addChild(loader);
player.addElement(myComponent);
]]>
</fx:Script>
<s:Group id="player"
height="100%" width="100%"/>
</s:Application>
But if that AS2 swf loads other swf's, they don't load or display. My FlashBuilder debugger reports no errors or security sand box violations. I'm using the most elemental code in my AS2 swf so as to not cause problems. This is it in its entirety:
this.onLoad = function(){
_root.loadMovie("http://[PATH_TO_REMOTE_SWF]");
The paths to the remote content are fine because swf's load and display fine from AS2 swf when run on it's own - not embedded in Flex app. They also load and run fine if I cut out the AS2 swf and access directly from my Flex code. So I know there isn't a path issue. More likely not accessing the right layer in the AS2 swf from Flex or something. Or maybe security sandbox violation but I don't see anything reported in the FlashBuilder debug console. When run console just reports:
[SWF] SwfMobile.swf - 2,639,761 bytes after decompression
[SWF] assets/swf/AS2.swf - 1,470 bytes after decompression
Is there something inherently wrong with loading swf's that load other things? Even if I have the AS2 swf load jpgs they don't load so the format of the target content at the end of the chain doesn't seem to be the issue. Just the act of embedding a swf that loads other things seems to be the problem.

Ah, yes. Using an AVM1 SWF could prove difficult...
I'm going on about 3 hours of sleep at the moment, but let me toss out a few thoughts I have and hopefully something will stick...
Ok, so my first thought what to try and cast the loaded content as a MovieClip and call methods on that, but the fact they are AVM1 throws that out the window.
That leaves LocalConnection, as you mentioned. But this would require you to have code on the receiving end to handle the connection... no good either.
But what if you created a "bridge" in AS2 that holds all the code for the receiving end of LocalConnection (or has the control logic itself, perhaps even eliminating the need for LocalConnection all together!). I think maybe this is what you were trying to do already by loading a SWF into a SWF? Well instead of loading your bridge at runtime, what if you statically linked it into your project as a class?
*a few moments later*
Well it looks like you can in fact link in a a symbol created for AVM1, but it will only come in as a SpriteAsset, and will not include any custom code (which makes sense, since they use entirely different class constructs).
To do the test, I created a symbol exported for actionscript (AS2/Flash8), then linked it in with a CSS style embed. I then instantiated the class and called describeType on it.
So in summery, it looks like calling custom code on the bridge is out (I did not test this extensively, that was just my first impression with this simple test). However, if you may be able to perform the actions you need by attempting to cast the loaded content into something AVM2 can recognize. Apparently it does this automatically when linked in statically, so maybe there is something there worth looking into... mainly, can you do what you need using only the base class and no custom code?
Keep me posted!

• I need to access/pass variables'(s) of a .swf file into another .swf file.

Hi all,
I have basic knowledge of Flash and AS3.0.
Suppose i have a flash swf file(main.swf). In this main.swf
file, i loaded another swf file(sub.swf) by writing the following
code snippet in main.swf file as shown in Attach Code:
Now, how to acess the data present in main.swf into sub.swf.
Note: Here data represents values/data stored in
variables/objects of main.swf file.

Does this actually work -- assigning variables directly on the loader? I'm interested in setting flash variables on the loaded SWF, but I get a compilation error when trying something similar:
Error: Access of possibly undefined property x through a reference with static type flash.display:Loader.
[exec]
[exec]             textLdr.x = 50;
I also tried casting the loader to Object, which compiles but then fails at runtime.

• GetURL not working when swf is loaded into another swf

Ok, I need some help for something relatively simple which
for some reason I've not been able to find any information on at
all?
Hopefully it will be something easy to fix.
Essentially I have the following:
my main movie "Home.swf"
another movie "Sub.swf"
I've loaded "Sub.swf" into "Home.swf" via an empty movieclip.
Within "Sub.swf" I have some links which when clicked call
getURL and open a HTML page in the browser.
But for some reason the getURL isn't working and I believe
its because the getURL is called from a loaded movie within
"Home.swf".
I've tried changing the actionscript to:
_root.getURL('/mypage.html');
_parent.getURL('/mypage.html');
but neither (_root / _parent) seems to work?
Need help here please.
Many thanks.
Kind regards,
M.

Hi kglad,
Yes the button is definitely firing ok.
In the "Sub.swf" movie, on the second frame of the timeline
(the first frame is some preloader code) there is the following
code:
imgMC.mascara.onPress = function() {
//trace('mc[activo] = ' + mc[activo]);
switch(mc[activo])
case _level0.imgMC.MC0:
trace('0 - ' + mc[activo])
break;
case _level0.imgMC.MC1:
trace('1 - ' + mc[activo])
break;
case _level0.imgMC.MC2:
trace('2 - ' + mc[activo])
break;
case _level0.imgMC.MC3:
trace('3 - ' + mc[activo])
break;
case _level0.imgMC.MC4:
trace('4 - ' + mc[activo])
break;
case _level0.imgMC.MC5:
trace('5 - ' + mc[activo])
break;
If I run this movie in Flash (ctrl-enter) then the trace
works fine.
But the trace stops working when I run the main "Home.swf"
movie in Flash (ctrl-enter) when the "Sub.swf" is loaded into an
empty movie clip.
And when I change the trace for a getURL and test in a
browser it still doesn't work?
What do you reckon?
Thanks.
M.

• How to Load an SWF into the Parent SWF

Hi all,
I have 3 SWFs.
X.SWF - Parent application. Contains an empty movie clip for
loading external swfs using loadClip() method.
B.SWF - Has some text and pics. Gets loaded into the empty
movieclip on X.SWF. Also has a button saying 'Load A.SWF'.
A.SWF - Similar to B.SWF with a button saying 'Load B.SWF'.
When I start the main application (X.SWF) and load B.SWF into
it all is fine.
But would like to click on the 'Load A.SWF' button on B.SWF
and load A.SWF into X.SWF. And visa-vesa.
The problem is I'm not able to refer to the parent container
(X) from these child (A and B) SWFs.
Is there any way to do this?
Thanks

First if you use
Button.onPress=function(){
this._parent.loadMovie();
the movie try to load swf into B.swf because "this" mean the
button.Try with more ._parent or just if you X.swf is into the one
MovieClip in 1st stage _level0.SWF.loadMovie();.Also if you want to
load the A,B.swf into the stage simultaneously just create two
movieclips into the X.swf mcA and mcB and the path has gone to
_level0.SWF.mcA.loadMovie("A.swf"); :)
