Nested style: everything preceeded by 3 spaces needs to be italicized

I'm doing a directory for a church. I got my nested style sheet to place a rule before each entry and to bold the family name. At the end of each listing, the children in each family are listed. I created a nested style for the names. I tried defining the nested style as through 3 spaces but that italicizes everything except the family name. How do I use nested style to see the three spaces through hard return and italicize everything in between?
Screen shot with tabs and spaces. The very first entry (Ainsle family) is how it should look.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Richard,
You're a little confused about this.
First, do NOT worry about putting the em space after the names. Just do a Replace All to change instances of three spaces to an em space. (I'm assuming you didn't put three spaces anywhere else.)
At the end of the nested styles, you want to apply None up to the first em space.
Then you want to apply the character style italic until the end of the paragraph which you can define as the end nested style here character.
That should be all you need.
However, I noticed that you've got an error in the listing for Kevin Alexander and Julie Hansen. The rule underneath their names is wrong.
Finally, you ought to think a second before posting an image on the web with people's real names, addresses, emails, home and work phones, etc.
If it is possible to revoke that image, do it now!

    Your Solid State Drive and having enough space inside your Macbook Air & Pro
    Solid State Drive usage premise, or the “more space / upgrade SSD” question
    There have been questions posed and positions taken by many people who are trying to use their Macbook Air or Pro’s solid state drive (SSD) as a mass media storage device, for either pictures, videos, massive music collections or all three combined; but this should not be the working premise of a ‘limited’ SSD and its use.
    In which, it’s the case of those users with either 128GB, 256GB, or even 512GB of internal SSD space, that have or are running “out of space”, that questions are raised. The immediate premise of some users can sometimes be “(how to / if) upgrading my SSD” when in fact in nearly all instances another approach is the logical and sensible one that needs to be looked into and exercised.
    Any Macbook containing a SSD should be idealized as a ‘working platform’ notebook containing all your applications, documents, and weekly or bi-weekly necessary files. All collections of media files such as pictures, music, and videos, unless directly needed should be kept off the notebook and on an external hard drive or likewise. While the ‘working platform’ premise is also the case with larger internal conventional hard drives of 1TB+, its implementation isn't as critical except in terms of data protection.
    Realistically, you should at most coordinate roughly 20 to 25% of your total SSD space to all audio-video personal use media (picture / music / video collections), leaving the remaining amount on an external HD.
    Nobody should consider any notebook a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device; and in the case of a SSD, this is more important for purposes of having sufficient working space on the SSD and reducing SSD ‘bloat’ in which cases someone is wrongly attempting to use the SSD space as a large media storage nexus.
    The rare exception to the collective usage and premise of SSD use in which a much larger SSD is truly needed are for those in video and photography professions that require both the extremely fast speeds of the SSD and the onboard storage for large and or many video and photography files. However this also falls under the premise of a ‘working platform’ for such peoples rather than the intent of many who are using the SSD as passive and static data storage for media files very infrequently needed or accessed.
    All on-notebook data collections should be logically approached as to necessity, and evaluated as to whether it is active or passive data that likely doesn’t need to be on the notebook, allocations of space-percentages to as-needed work and use, apportioning space for your entertainment media, and questioning whether it should it be on the notebook for more than short-term consumption.
    Considerations should be made in the mind of any user in differentiating the necessary system data (System hub) comprising the Mac OSX, applications, necessary documents that both must and should be on your internal SSD, and that of the users personal data (Data hub) comprising created files, pictures, music, videos, PDF files, data created or being created and otherwise, that likely unless being used soon or often should be parked on an external hard drive for consumption, or temporarily loading onto the internal SSD.
    You both can and should purchase whichever SSD size you need or see fit, but even in the case of the largest of SSD, unless use-considerations are made, and SSD spaces are allocated as should be the case indicated above, one can easily and immediately run into this quandary of “needing more internal SSD space”, in which instance a different approach in usage must then be implemented.
    However it is almost always the case, that such large media files are wanted to be stored internally rather than actually needed, in which case the external HD is both prudent as well as necessary. Additionally costs per MB are infinitely less on an external HD than an internal SSD in any consideration of data expansion needs.
    A Professional Example
    In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.
    You should also never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your Macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’. This is especially what your external HD is for.
    Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their notebooks internal SSD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
    Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your Macbook has a SSD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your notebook to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
    Slim USB3 1TB external hard drive
    External Hard Drives
    External hard drives are both extremely cheap and regardless of the size of your internal SSD (or even internal hard drive if the case), you need an external hard drive with your SSD equipped Macbook for several reasons:
    1. Data backup and protection.
    2. Redundancy for important data.
    3. Necessitated ideal space for large media files for collections of pictures, videos, and music etc.
    While ever changing in price, typical portable 2.5” external hard drives in USB3 run roughly $65 for 1TB or $120 for 2TB small portable USB3 hard drives. Such drives range in thickness between 5mm and 15mm, with recent improvements in storage of 500GB drives in 5mm profiles.
    There is almost no premise in which a small 12mm thick 1 Terabyte USB hard drive cannot be taken along with any Macbook as an external large storage extension inside any Macbook carry case or pouch. Typically such external HD profiles are not much bigger than a deck of cards.
    External hard drives are a foregone necessity for purchase with any Macbook for at the very least Time Machine backups, data redundancies, and ideally for large media storage.

  • GREP/nested styles: Help needed

    Hi there,
    I loved GREP and nested styles from the moment I figured out what it was. But sadly I am not very good at building structures, and I can't find a GREP manual for my needs (I'd need it in German). So my skills are very, very basic, but usually I get along. Now I have a task that goes far beyond, and after one and a half very frustrating days of testing and fiddling around I figure that am stuck. I hope that anyone can help.
    So this is the task: I have an Excel file, 11 columns and hundreds of lines. Those will have to go in a "list of publications" of a scientific book.
    The columns are tabstop separated:
    Author1     Author2     Author3     Author4     Author5     Text     Title     Journal     Volume     Page     Year
    The result will have to look like this:
    Author1, Author2, Author3, Author4, and Author5, Text,
    Title
    Journal <blank> Volume, Page <blank> (Year)
    So I have to insert commas, the word "and", (probably soft) linebreaks, blanks, and brackets. "Title" needs to be in italics, while "Volume" needs to be bold. The problem is that I get text corrections all the time, and the excel file gets longer and longer every day. In addition to that, some columns, like "Author4" and "Author5", and mostly "Text" are often, but not always, empty.
    Is there a way to change the tabstop separated Excel lines into what it has to look like more or less automatically (or at least in just a few simple steps)?
    Thanks for your help!
    Best from a sunny Hannover, Germany,
    Gero

    I'd have saved the excel file as a Comma Delimited File
    Then all your text would be converted from
    Author 1
    Author2
    Author3
    Author4
    Title etc.
    to
    Author1, Author 2, Author3, Author4, Title etc.
    Then it would have been a matter of finding a determined amount of commas to a point and inserting a soft return
    and so on.
    If that makes sense?

  • Bolding all type before en space without using nested styles

    I'm trying to have all the words before an en space in all paragraphs made boldface without using nested styles. The nested styles work great for print, but don't seem to do the trick for epubs, such as this project.
    For example:
    Car Ferrari GTO
    I tried doing a find/change for all the text formatted with the nested style, changing the nested style to no char. style + Bold. But for some reason the nested style stays attached, and if I delete the character style that is called for in the nested style, the text loses its bf.
    Thanks for any help!!

    Silly me -- that trick uses another sort of workaround.

  • Using Nested Styles for Prices

    I wish to easily plug in Prices and have them automatically edited to fit the style I want.
    For example:  If I typed $3.59. . . .I would want it to show up as automatically.
    I am mainly concerrned with being able to apply Superscripts and Subscripts and erasing the decimal.
    A step-by-step explaination would be amazing!
    Thank you,
    - Jack

    Sorry, you can't do this with styles. Styles can change formatting of text, but cannot add or delete. For that you need to run find/change.
    You can search for (\.)(\d\d) and replace with $2 and set the change format to your superscript (probably with a local override rather than a style, as will become clear in a moment). It would be nice to limit this to only prices by adding a lookbehind for the dollar sign and dollar amounts, but lookbehinds cannot have varable length strings, so you would have to do one for each possible number of digits, like this:
    (?<=[$])(\.)(\d{2})
    (?<=[$]\d)(\.)(\d{2})
    (?<=[$]\d{2})(\.)(\d{2}) for 0, 1 and 2 digits in front of the decimal.
    You'll need a second query to add the "ea" if you don't type it, probably find \d with the find format set to superscript and change to $0ea This will leave the "ea" also in superscript, so you'll need a second query to fix that: (?<=\d)ea with the find format again set to superscript. Leave the change field blank and set the change format for normal position.
    All of these queries can be chained together to run in one operation using tools you'll find at http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/chain_queries.html
    I WOULD use an ordinary nested style, however, to style make the prices large and orange. That would be None up to 1 $ and then your big orange style through 1 word (this may at first only make the $and dollar portion of the price big and orange, but once the decimal point is removed it shoould fix itself. If you add a space before the "ea" you'll need to apply the style through 2 words.

  • Nested style highlights pink as if there's a missing font (?)

    setting up a new document here, and trying to make the first character in each paragraph use Body 01 DROP CAPS character style. in this capture i've set it to the first three characters for testing (never mind the term drop caps; trying to use nested style here).
    no matter what i set the typeface to in the character style, it won't display as nested. what would cause this?

    There is a hierarchy to styles. First, the paragraph style is applied to all type in the paragraph, including any nested character styles that are part of the paragraph style definition. Next any character styles are applied, which override the formatting assigned in the paragraph style, and finally, any formatting you apply locally by selecting text and changing the parameters is applied, and that overrides everything.
    Local formatting overrides show up for selected text as a Plus sign after the style name in the Paragraph Styles panel. Do you see the plus sign when you select your text? I suspect not. More likely, you've applied a default character style to everything, so no matter what settings you have in your paragraph style they will be overridden by the applied character style. As I said before, character styles are used only for selected text. They are used for "special" text that needs to be different in some way from the other text in a paragraph -- the basic formatting for the entire paragraph is defined in the paragraph style.
    When you highlight an entire paragraph there should NOT be a character style showing as applied as well. The character style should be either [None], indicating that no text has an overriding character style applied, or it should be blank, indicating that some portion of the text has a character style applied, but not the whole paragraph.
    Bottom line, with no text selected make sure the character style is set to [None] before you begin adding text, and only apply character styles through Nested, Line, or GREP styles in your paragraph style, or by selecting specific text and manually applying the style. Manually applied character styles survive changes to the paragraph style, and are actually the most useful if they are fairly generic, applying just a color, or bold or italic, but not specifying a face or size, so they let the face and size change to match any changes made to the paragraph style -- you usually don't want 9 pt minion bold suddenly appearing in the middle of a paragraph that you've changed to 12 pt Helvetica unless it's a product branding. Instead a style that says only Bold would give you 12 pt Helvetica Bold.

  • Mapping XML tags to paragraph styles that contain nested styles

    I am importing XML into InDesign (CS5.5) and the tag mapping to styles is working fine until I get to a paragraph style that contains a nested style.
    I have a sentence that starts with a number:
    1the dog runs fast.
    In InDesing properly styled looks like this:
         1  The dog runs fast.
    (tab)1(tab)The dog runs fast.
    The number is styled with a character style (Number) and the whole sentence is styled with a paragraph style (Sentence). In order to get the tabs in between the number, I have a nested style within the paragraph style (Sentence). This triggers the tabs when it hits the character style (Number) like this:
    Number up to 2 Tab Characters
    In XML, it looks like this
    <sentencetag><numbertag>1</numbertag>The dog runs fast.</sentencetag>
    Sentencetag is mapped to Sentence paragrph style and Numbertag is mapped to Number character style, but the nested style for the tabs are not displaying. I just get this in IND.
    1the dog runs fast.
    Everything works beautifully until I hit the nested styles, which I do need to get to work somehow. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    It sounds like your tab characters are actually disappearing from content in the XML. Jeff was responding to the fact that they need to be there, and you state that you originally had them in your document, but they are not showing up once imported through the XML.
    The tabs may be disappearing in the XML document due to the "TAB" character in your text editor not being a tab, or at least not properly-formed XML TAB equivalent, OR because you are not "importing whitespace elements" when you import your XML.
    Importing whitespace elements can wreak havoc on other things in your XML structure and styled layout within the Indesign document, so I would put the XML quivalent of TAB everywhere a tab should be in your XML, and make sure NOT to import whitespace (when importing XML using "Merge Content", select not to import whitespace items from the import options).
    I believe the XML friendly character code for a TAB character is "&#9;" or "&#09;" but have not tested this. Don't include quotes when adding the character code, just the ampersand, semicolon, and everything in-between.
    Also, sounds like your tags are mapping ok for you, so your XML should look something like:
    <sentencetag>&#9;<numbertag>1</numbertag>&#9;The dog runs fast</sentencetag>.
    It should't matter where you put the TAB character equivalent in relation to your nested tag.

  • HT4623 I lost my apps and iTunes after a restore, but it says there isn't enough space on the iPhone 4. How do I know how much space needs to be freed up? I keep deleting photos and videos, but I'm still getting the same message.

    I did an iphone 4 software update. It then asked me to do a "restore" in order for me to be able to use the latest iTunes. I did a "restore" to "factory settings" (this was the only option listed) thinking I'd be able to sync later and get everything back and ended up losing all my purchased apps and iTunes. When I open iTunes, "Welcome to your new iphone" and it says I can re-do the "restore" and choose my lastest update. I assume this will give me back my apps and iTunes. When i choose to do this, it says there isn't enough space on the iPhone. How do I know how much space needs to be freed up? I keep deleting photos and videos from the phone, but I'm still getting the same message every time I re-try. I don't want to delete everything, but I don't know what to do...? Thanks!

    Thanks but I think it has something to do with the 'restore'. in the newest iTunes 11, when I click on the tab "iphone", it redirects me to the "welcome to your new iphone" page and asks about doing a 'restore'. I already did a 'restore', but it went to the original factory settings and I want to 'restore' to my lastest back up as of April 12. When I choose that option, it says my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't know how much I need to delete in order to make it work. I've deleted lots, but it only has 4.1 GB available. I'm not sure why this isn't enough to do a 'restore'. I don't want to delete all my photos and videos, but maybe I will have to?...7.7GB is used up for that. I can't sync or do ANYTHING...

  • Find/Change problems within a nested style?

    I have a problem with Find/Change (in both CS4 and CS5) not recognizing text within its “find” parameters when text that fits those parameters is part of a nested style. I want to find any instance of italic in the text, regardless of what paragraph or character style it is, but F/C only intermittently finds italics, both within and without that text existing in a nested style. Has anyone come across this issue?
    There is NOTHING different about the text that is recognized by F/C–or not recognized–that shows up in any of the panels or palettes. There are no font conflicts. I’ve replaced prefs and saved data files. If I go into the character palette and change the italic portion of the nested style to “italic” character style (it shows up in character palette as [none], even though it has a nested style), then F/C finds it for sure; but if I don’t do that, then F/C will sometimes find it, and sometimes not, and sometimes in one instance and not in another! There is no hidden formatting that shows up in story editor. I remade another nested para style with the same formatting but with varying results! Help… I’ve tried everything.

  • How do I create a table of contents with a nested style paragraph?

    I'm having difficulty figuring out how to generate my Table of Contents with a nested style. In this screen shot, "SPECIAL EVENTS" is considered level one and the pink circled "Fittest Firm Challenge" is level 2. Because it is a nested style, it is picking up the entire paragraph. I don't want to put in a paragraph break because that would add too much space in the magazine since there are a lot of other listings like this. I've tried reading through other people's discussions but I'm totally lost with the explanations. Is there a simple workaround or solution to this?

    You're asking InDesign to do something it's not designed to do, namely, to treat a nested-style section of a paragraph as an independent paragraph. That's called a "run-in paragraph" in Adobe FrameMaker, and it's been a beloved feature there since FrameMaker was introduced in '89, about ten years before InDesign.
    You can make a formal feature enhancement request here: Wishform Many InDesign features have come into being from user requests, so lend your voice, and be patient. Explain why you think a run-in paragraph feature would be useful.
    Others have asked about this, and there are a number of workarounds that may or may not be suitable for you. Let's hope that some of the more-intense forum folks can help you with a useful search term for this forum, so that you can review what's been suggested and tried in the past, and what results you can expect.
    In the meantime, you might consider inserting the second-level heading in an inline anchored text frame in the paragraph. It will be an independent paragraph but you can adjust appear on the same line as following paragraph. Then you can extract it for the TOC.

  • Creating Styles.. and then nesting styles

    Seems simple enough:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
    tell active document
      set myCharacterStyle to make character style with properties {name:"Year", size:26.0, fill color:"Paper", stroke color:"Black", stroke weight:0.75, font:"Helvetica", font style:"Black"}
      set myCharacterStyle to make character style with properties {name:"Years", size:18.0, fill color:"Black", stroke color:nothing, stroke weight:nothing, horizontal scale:80.0, vertical scale:80.0, font:"Helvetica", font style:"Black"}
      set myParagraphStyle to make paragraph style with properties {name:"Year"}
      set nested styles of myParagraphStyle to {{applied character style:"Year", repetition:1, inclusive:false, delimiter:any word}, {applied character style:"Years", repetition:2, inclusive:true, delimiter:any word}}
    end tell
    end tell
    The font and the point size do not come through when the style is created. The nested styles also do not come through.
    I tried applied font:"Helvetica" to get 'font family not available'. Also, font:font "Helvetica"...
    What I get right now I is no font defined or size. The rest works.
    So what am I doing wrong here?

    Hi lithodora,
    as Mary Posner wrote a character style doesn't have the property 'font', but 'applied font' and 'font style'.
    "... specified as either a font object or the name of font family."
    just look it up in the dictionary ...
    Try always to work with references.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
        --you've got to set myHelvetica to your needs!
        set myHelveticas to (font family of every font whose name contains "Helvetica") --will return the helvetica font familiy names
        set myHelvetica to item 1 of myHelveticas --just randomly pick one for my example, hoping it's got a 'black' style ;-) ...
        tell active document
            set myCharacterStyle01 to make character style with properties {name:"test", size:26.0, fill color:"Paper", stroke color:"Black", stroke weight:0.75, applied font:myHelvetica, font style:"Black"}
            set myCharacterStyle02 to make character style with properties {name:"tests", size:18.0, fill color:"Black", stroke color:nothing, stroke weight:nothing, horizontal scale:80.0, vertical scale:80.0, applied font:myHelvetica, font style:"Black"}
            set myParagraphStyle to make paragraph style with properties {name:"nextTest"}
            tell myParagraphStyle
                make new nested style with properties {applied character style:myCharacterStyle01, repetition:1, inclusive:false, delimiter:any word}
                make new nested style with properties {applied character style:myCharacterStyle02, repetition:2, inclusive:true, delimiter:any word}
            end tell
        end tell
    end tell

  • CSS in CS4: Can I create "nested styles" similar to InDesign's?

    I am working on the obituary archive section of a newspaper website. I have lists of similar 3-line "units", and I have a different class style set up for each line. A typical "unit" would be:
    (Person's name) - bold weight, soft return
    (Person's age/residence) - regular weight, soft return
    (Date of obit publication) - smaller text, hard return
    In InDesign, I could easily set up a nested paragraph style (with the help of defined character styles) to automatically format this, but I haven't been able to figure out a quick way to do so in Dreamweaver. So I waste a lot of time selecting different class styles for each line to make it look how I want it. Is it possible to make this simpler? Am I making it too hard?

    Am I making it too hard?
    You are in a way.  What are your skills with HTML and CSS?  If 'minimal' then you are in for a rough ride.  DW doesn't take kindly to that....
    It would be a simple matter to define a few descendent selectors that would style everything in each of those units automatically.  Does that mean anything to you?
    For example -
    #obitUnit { .... }
    #obitUnit div { ... }
    #obitUnit h1 { font-size:1.6em;margin:1em 0 0; /* gives a 'soft return' along with the next rule */ }
    #obitUnit h1+p { margin:0 0 1em; }
    #obitUnit p+p { font-size:x-small; }
    would style -
    <div id="obitUnit">
         <h1>Person's Name</h1>
         <p>Person's age/residence</p>
         <p>Date of publication</p>
    </div>

  • What is wrong with my Nested Style?

    Hi guys,
    Frustrating times in InDesign when Nested Styles do not behave as i would like to. I would like to have a highlited text after the Hard Return or ":" a simple Character style Helvetica Bold like here.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1gFC1qoFDCNkgJy3BmxEYZc3ZEAE0
    I don´t know what i am doing so wrong i get this Morse Code. The highlight stuff is mixing up everything. The highlight is deselected in the character style but keeps appearing...
    Any idea?
    Thanks
    Sebastian
    pd: i know the palettes are in Spanish but i guess is mostly understandable since the locations of things are the same.

    You are totally misunderstanding how nested styles work. Once hit the
    return key you're starting a new paragraph. If you want your text to

  • Nested styles: I can't seem to make this work

    I can't seem to do this nested style: All Adobe Garamond. Headline: 24/25 centered. Return. Byline: 9/10 centered, stacked. "by" is italic with a .5, one inch wide  rule above. Return. Author's name is small caps with the same rule below. Return. Body text is 9/10 regular, first paragraph has a 3 line bold drop cap, the other paragraphs have a .25 indent.
    Nothing seems to work when I try to set this up. Rules everywhere...and I am supposed to have the document set up in 14 hours....help!

    Nested Styles are character styles added inside a paragraph style that  affect only certain parts of the text, based on trigger patterns that  you set up. Typically you would use a nested style to do somthing like make the first three words of a paragraph Italic, or make a price bold on a menu.
    It's probably technically possible to achieve your title using nested styles, forced line breaks as triggers, and paragraph rules above and below with the proper offsets, but what you want to do is not typically done with nested styles, but rather with a series of individual paragraph styles that are applied in rotation automatically using the "next style" attribute.
    Mikes example is using three paragraph styles for the heading. PStyle1 (just a place-holder name for a pragraph style here) is applied to the text Headline 2, and as part of that style defintion the "next style" is set to PStyle2. PStyle2 is applied to the By line, and its next style is set to PStyle3, which is applied to MW Design. Each of these lines is a separate paragraph (he should have shown you the non-printing characters so you could see the hard returns at the end of each line). PStyle3 should have its next style set to your style for the first paragraph of body text that includes the drop cap, and that one needs a next style set to the paragraph style for your other body text. This last body style should have the next style set to "same style."
    If you are typing directly in ID, for each story, set the style to PStyle1 and begin typing. When you hit Enter to move to the by line, the style will change automatically, and will change again each time you hit Enter until you are inthe second paragraph of the body copy, where it will keep the same style until you change it manually again.
    If you are working with imported text you can select an entire story froom the fiorst line of the title to the last last paragraph of body copy, then right click on the PStyle1 name in the Paragrapgh Styles panel and choose Apply PStyle1 and Next Style and the whole shebang will get the correct styles applied in one click.
