NetBeans - Reloadable web application

Hi can someone tell how can I make a web application reloadable.
I am using Netbeans 3.6 and its embedded tomcat 5.0 server and I do not want recompile and execute my application everytime I make changes and compile a single servler/jsp. Can someone suggest me thow to achieve this.
Thanks,
rahul.

JSP and HTML pages should already update. If you want servlets to then you need to set the reloadable attribute of the contetxt to true. This is located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\{user.id}\.netbeans\3.6\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19_base\conf\Catalina\localhost\{app name}.xml
Here is where you'll find information on the servlet context
http://localhost:8084/tomcat-docs/config/context.html
You could also use the tomcat manager app to reload the context.

    Hi,
              I agree it is a much needed feature. Suppose I just change an init
              param of one application in the web.xml, I don't want to take down the
              15 other webapps running on my server just to be able to have that web
              app restart and re-read is configuration. Of course, I could program
              some servlet that allows changing application attributes and to enable
              restarting, but really this a)does not cover all the cases (i.e. addind
              an EBJ reference binding to web.xml) b) should be provided by the app
              server, not programmed by every little programmer again & again.

    actually i developed a web application in JSF using IDE NetBeans Visual Web.
    application is having a table which is connected to database ( MySQL ).... i dragged my database table on visual web's table and all the connections were automatically created. i m using tomcat as a web server.
    application runs fine through Netbeans but wen i deployed its war file in tomcat and tried to run.....browser showed me the table but the data was not there.....infact i m getting "No items in the table" written, in my table on browser.
    plz help.....thnx in advance

    One suggestion is to use JDeveloper to do the deployment.
    Create a connection in JDeveloper to the OC4J instance you wish to deploy to, then create a new deployment profile for your application and let JDeveloper perform the deploymnent for you.
    Once it's working, you can then go and look at the OC4J configuration files and see the tags looks like to perform the deployment correctly.
    Note that JDeveloper will deploy the WAR file by first wrappering it in an EAR file.

  • Dynamic class reloading in modular web application

    Hi.
    My web application has these requirements:
    A. Functional modularization (like plug-ins). Modules will be simple jars containing application logic classes: dto beans, business logic services, dao (jpa), framework stuff (Struts2), etc...
    B. At runtime and without restarting the application "class loading" must be aware of classes inside new, changed and removed modules.
    C. Some of these jars will be outside the web application folder (WEB-INF/lib), possibly outside the container itself too.
    My question:
    1. Can I achieve all or some of my requirements with a Java web application?
    2. How should I manage the modules?
    3. Do I need some special web container feature (maybe osgi)?
    4. Can I use a custom class loader in my application?
    The architecture objectives are:
    I. Provide scalability.
    II. Efficient development process (independent deployment and no application restart required).
    III. Better production support (no application restart required for changes).
    More on the architecture:
    a). Functional scalability, meaning this that my application may functionally grow up to an indeterminate number of small functional modules.
    b). Modules will be developed, deployed and maintained independently so the application discovers and loads classes on demand.
    c). Avoid a big .war file containing all the small modules because a small change in one module would involves deploying all the other modules (possibly hundreds o even thousands of them) and restarting the application.
    d). Above point involves dynamic class reloading.
    I guess this is addressed by OSGI (looks like heavy to deal with), Jigsaw (still under development) and maybe others. I think the key point is the class loader. I will develop a custom class loader but maybe you have some advice for me before starting to develop.
    Thanks and regards.

    Classes maintained by the container should not be loaded by an application. You want the container to read those classes and react accordingly. Most of those classes are read when the container starts up a container restart will be required. Trying to leverage another container within a container does not sound like it will be worth (if you can get it to work).
    Perhaps you should state the problem that you are trying to solve with these modules so that others may suggest more feasible solutions to achieve your target goals.

  • Dynamic Reloading of Web Applications

    Should I be able to trigger dynamic reloading of web applications by "touching" the related web.xml file? It doesn't appear to work under Win2K server, JWS 6.1 SP4.
    When I "touch" a related servlet class file under the WEB-INF directory, it seems to trigger reloading of all applications under that virtual server. Is that expected behavior?
    Is there any other method of triggering dynamic reloading of web applications?

    I have not really tested in in V6.1 but in V6.0 it was possible to add the line into web-apps.xml file with the following:
    <class-loader reload-interval="XX"/>
    where XX is seconds between reloads. i.e. 3600 to reload every hour.
    In V6.1 that setting is in server.xml
    and is called "dynamicreloadinterval". You can try playing with it. But as I said I have not really tested how that works...

    Are there any settings needed to be done to the tomcat server?
    .....or to use a different version?
    Ps: i'm putting the MyApplication.war file in the webapps directory of the installed tomcat server(I thought this one is needed)

    I too have had the same problem and have tried every trick in the book, this solution work and makes sence for me.
    If you wish to deploy to a server that is not the the bundled server, make sure that there are no spaces in the path to your source code or your tomcat server.
    C:\Documents and settings\Fred Brooks\My Documents\MyApplication
    Bad
    C:\env\MyApplication
    Good
    C:\Program files\Appache Software Foundation\Tomcat 5.5\
    Bad
    C:\Tomcat55\
    Good
    this seemed to allow me to both deploy strait to the server from netbeans as well as using the tomcat admin web page to deploy the .war file.
    I remember reading someware, or hearing someware that ant doesn't like spaces in file or directory names, in fact had a general dislike for spaces in general.
    If you find this solution doesn't work try some of the following.
    - set the <faces severlet> <load on startup> to false (0) in the project web.xml.
    - copy the jars from your build web-inf / lib folder of your project to tomcat\server\lib
    - removing the any content in the tomcat\temp folder
    - copy the jars from your build web-inf / lib folder of your project to any folder
    in tomcat that contains jars or you might think would like some (yes i know
    im flayaling wildly at the problem here this is realy a last ditch effort)
    these are some of the solutions i have found elseware on the internet, you have by now proberbley seen them and tried them yourself, they work sometimes apparently, but they seem a little random.
    Hope this helps

  • Web Application with NetBeans 4.0 & JDK 1.5

    I am currently working on a web application using NetBeans 4.0.
    I have a piece of code that works perfectly in a General application which works on jdk 1.5.
    However, when i created a web application and port all existing code to this new project, the compiler gives me an error:
    javac: invalid target release 1.5
    So wat do i have to do to get the code work under Web Project in NetBeans 4.0?

    In NetBeans 4.0, General Java Apps seem to work fine with jdk 1.5 so NetBeans 4.0 does support jdk 1.5 to an extent.
    However, the same code does not work in the Web Application.
    Okay, when you first create a Web Project in NetBeans 4.0, it asks you the 'J2EE Specification Level' and it gives you only 2 options: J2EE 1.3 or J2EE 1.4. I think this is wat giving me the problem.
    The reason why i chosed NetBeans 4.0 because I want to work with Web Services and Tomcat. There are 'none' online resource for NetBeans 4.1 WS and Tomcat (only App Server).
    The worst case is i'll get rid of Generics in my code.

  • Help please! Java application and web application...

    Hi,
    I have a problem with inserting a java application (Main.java) in a web application(index.jsp).
    I found a source demo of a drag and drop application on the Internet, but now I want to
    have the drag and drop application work in a Jpanel/JFrame in a webapplication.
    The drag and drop application code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    public class Main {
        public static void main(final String[] args) {
            final ButtonGroup grp = new ButtonGroup();
            final JPanel palette = new JPanel(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.LEFT));
            palette.setBorder(BorderFactory.createTitledBorder("Palette"));
            final MainPanel mainPanel = new MainPanel();
            mainPanel.setPalette(palette);
            for(int j=0; j<4; j++){
                final JToggleButton btn = new JToggleButton("Panel "+(j+1));
                palette.add(btn);
                grp.add(btn);
                btn.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
                    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                        mainPanel.setAdding(btn.getText());
            final JFrame f = new JFrame("Drag and drop panels");
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            f.getContentPane().add(palette, BorderLayout.WEST);

    }This application works with JFrame, but I want to display the JFrame in a webapplication (JSP Page).
    I'm using Netbeans 6.0 (GlassFish) to create webapplication using Visual Web JavaServer Faces.
    So in summary:
    How can i display the drag and drop application into a JFrame (better in a JPanel) in a webapplication (index.jsp)??
    Hope you can help...
    Thanks in advance...
    Greetings,
    Rajsh

    So have an applet that opens a JFrame... JSP or not has nothing to do with it, since it's nothing but HTML the client gets.
    You can't have a JFrame embedded in an HTML page. And if you could have an applet but don't know how to get that copied code to fit inside (I mean, content pane is content pane), you might want to consider learning how to do that.

    WebLogic Application Deployment Utility
    Usage: java weblogic.Deployer [options] [-activate|-deactivate|-remove|-unprepare|-cancel|-list] [files]
    where options include:
    -help Print this help message.
    -version Print version information.
    -adminurl <https://<server>:<port>> The URL of the administration server: default
    http://localhost:7001
    -user <user> A user other than the default of
    "installadministrator"
    -password <password> Specifies the password on the command line.
    If this option is absent the user is
    prompted.
    -verbose Displays additional status during the
    deployment process, including notifications
    when the application is prepared and
    activated on each target.
    -debug Displays debug level messages to the standard
    output.
    -examples Display example usage of this tool.
    -upload Causes the specified source file(s) to be
    transferred to the adminstration server. This
    is used when the Deployer tools is not being
    used on the same machine as the adminstration
    server and the user does not otherwise have
    access to place the targeted files on the
    adminstration server.
    -delete_files Causes the server to remove the files that
    are specified in the file list and leave the
    application activated. This option is valid
    only for unarchived web applications.
    -remote Signals that the tools is not runnning on the
    same machine as the adminstration server and
    that the source path should be made passed
    through unchanged as it represents the path
    on the remote server.
    -nostage Sets the stagingMethod attribute on the
    application mbean when it is created so that
    the application will not be staged and the
    original source is be used.
    -external_stage Sets the stagingMethod attribute on the
    application mbean when it is created so that
    the application will not be staged but the
    value of the staging path will be used when
    preparing the application.
    -stage Sets the stagingMethod staging attribute on
    the application when it is created so that
    the application will always be staged. This
    value will override the stagingMethod
    attribute on any targeted servers.
    -nowait Once the action is initiated the tool will
    print the task id and exit. This is used to
    initiate multiple tasks and then monitor them
    later using the -list action.
    -timeout <seconds> The maximum time in seconds to wait for the
    completion of the deployment task. When the
    time expires the current status is printed
    and the program exits.
    -source <archive file or directory> Location of the file or directory that
    represents the enterprise component or
    application tha is being (re)activated. If
    the source file is relative it is relative to
    the current directory, unless the -remote
    option is used. To specify individual files
    within an application for reployment or
    addition list them at the end of the command
    line.
    -name <application name> The name of the application being deployed.
    -targets <<server 1>,...<component>@<server N>> A comma separated list of the server and/or
    cluster names. Each target may be qualified
    with a J2EE component name. This enables
    different components of the archive to
    deployed on different servers.
    -id <task identifier> Optional client supplied unique identifier
    for the deployment task. The id is first
    specified to -activate, -deactivate,
    -unprepare or -remove. It is then used later
    as an argument to -cancel or -list.
    -activate (Re)activates the <source> application on the
    <targets> with the <name>.
    -deactivate Deactivates the application <name> on the
    <targets> leaving an staged application files
    in a state where the may be quickly
    reactivated.
    -unprepare Deactivates and unloads classes for the
    application <name> on the <targets> leaving
    an staged application files in a state where
    the may be quickly reloaded.
    -remove Deactivates the application <name> on the
    <target> and removes any files that were
    staged for this application. If there are no
    longer any targets for the application, the
    associated configuration is completely
    removed.
    -cancel Atempts to cancel the task <id> if it is has
    not yet completed.
    -list Lists the target status of each task <id>
    -deploy a convenient alias for activate.
    -undeploy a convenient alias for unprepare.
    Optionally a list of the specific files in the archive that are to be
    redeployed may be specified. If a directory is specified the entire subtree is
    redeployed.
    Full documentation on this tool is available at:
    http://edocs.beasys.com/wls/docs70/adminguide/utils.html#1138475
    No actions was specified. Please specify one and only one of:
    -activate, -deactivate, -cancel, -remove, -unprepare, or -list.
    Type java weblogic.Deployer -examples for example usage.

    you use "deploy" under DOS-Mode to deploy your web application?
    i found some differences between "deploy" and "redeploy" function in jbuilder 9.
    when i choose "deploy" ,jbuilder shows me the commond below:
    E:\bea\jdk131_02\bin\javaw -classpath E:\bea\weblogic700\server\lib\weblogic.jar;E:\bea\weblogic700\server\lib\webservices.jar;E:\bea\weblogic700\server\lib\weblogic_sp.jar; weblogic.Deployer -user system -adminurl http://localhost:7001 -password 12345678 -deploy -name firstWebApp -upload -source E:/J2EE/servlet/firstWebApp.war -targets myserver

    when i choose redeploy,it shows me: (the -deploy parameter has changed to -activate) ,maybe it's a bug.
