Netboot no starting

Mac OS Xserve 10.4.8
My netboot service is not starting. The button to start the service is sort of greyed out. The log says:
"bootp: no Netboot images found"
"bootp: Netboot service turned off"
I have created an image using disk utility. Then I created a Network Install Image using the System Imaging Utility. The .nbi folder was created in the /Library/Netboot directory. Still, no service will not start.
I have started the Web, DHCP, DNS, AFP, and NFS services.
Where does the image need to place in. Is there a specific way that any of the services need to be configure in order for netboot to start?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

What you need is.
1. A valid netboot folder, generally, /Library/Netboot/NetbootSP0/ if you have more than 1 drive there maybe 1 netboot folder on each drive NetbootSP0 NetbootSP1 etc, SP = SharePoint.
2. So you also need a valid sharepoint, this is set under the sharing section of Workgroup manager, this sharepoint needs to have NFS export settings set to World and read only, not sure about AFP dont think its required, mines set to share but no guest access.
3. Since this share is set to NFs export, you need NFS to be running, but once you set this share to NFS the NFS daemon automatically starts.
4. DHCP needs to be running so the client can get network details.
5. Bootpd needs to be running (found in /usr/libexec/bootpd )
6. You dont need Netbootclient sharepoint i dont think unless you using headless bootup or OS9 netboot.
7. In Netboot section of Admin you need an enabled network interface, an enabled drive for Images, and client data if using NetBootclient share,
8. Then you need an enabled netboot image, with one as default and normally use NFS rather than HTTP.
Most of this a created by default when you install netboot on the server, All i had to do was enable an image and set as default, all the rest was set and starts on bootup. But you can do this manually.
You then create a netboot boot image or install image via the System Image Tool which creates a folder .nbi , you require the full contents so dont move or delete anything, place this folder in you /Library/NetBoot/NetBootSP0 and enable under Admin tool.
You can image dircetly from an external drive, doesnt need to be a .dmg

  • Can not get Netboot working across subnets

On the same subnet all my images work correctly, but once I try to netboot form a different subnet it doesn't work anymore.  I am correctly using the bless command, and I have tried both specifying the server (to get the default image) and specifying the booter file (to get the specific image).  If I just use the --server option the log shows BSDP inform and BSDP ACK[LIST] but nothing after that... there is no select.  Again, on the same subnet it will use select and work normally.  If I use the --booter option then sometimes I can get the netboot to start but I get an error (for example, AST says there was a network error and NetInstalls do not start).
I do know that this used to work, and in the process of changing computers and upgrading to Lion server it stopped working.  Any ideas?

Depending on your network configuration it maybe that the simplest option is to multi-home your NetBoot server so it is visible on each subnet. Multiple servers is of course another option.
However have a look at the information on the following links and see if any of it helps.

  • Netboot kills switch traffic

Hi there, I have an interesting issue. I set up netboot, and tested it on a dell swich, worked great, imaged two New iMacs with leopard. I them moved the server to the proper location, and got it up and running. I can netboot to it no problem, and even managed to image a machine...the problem is, during a certain portion of the Netbooting of my Netinstall set, every other machine connected to this switch looses complete network connectivity...Netboot kills all traffic to the other machines on the DLINK 10/100 dumb switch. I tested it several times, No netboot=constant network connectivity on the switch, If even one machine netboots, traffic ceases to flow on the switch, if I stop netbooting from a MacOSx client on the switch, Packets begin to flow again. I can reproduce this problem everytime, by netbooting either from a netboot image, or a netinstall set. It always happend on the same point of the netboot process, traffic on the switch collapses.
Has anyone experianced this provblem? I am running MacOSx Leopard, and Leopard server. Does anyone know a solution to this, or have you experainced the same pheonomenon.

Is your switch really a switch or is it just a hub? If it's a hub, then the amount of traffic generated by netboot could be preventing anyone else from talking.
On a managed switch it is important that the +Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol+ (RTSP) aka Port-Fast on Cisco be enabled. There is some info on the bombich.com forums under network troubeshooting that has some further info. If it is a dumb switch, it should work.
I've been running NetBoot on a Tiger 10.4.11 server, with a Leopard Universal Netinstall image and have had no problems. Except when I had a machine hang partway through the imaging process. The result was almost like the NetBoot server started screaming at the client since it wasn't listening. That barrage of NFS traffic brought our entire network down, until we realized it was being caused by the hung client. We imaged other machines after that, and as long as they don't hang during the imaging process, the rest of the network performs exactly as it should.
You may NOT want to use multicast ASR on your production network. It also has the potential to cause major headaches. If you want to do multicast you would be better off buying an inexpensive switch and creating a separate network for imaging.
Running WireShark on a machine attached to the network before you start NetBooting might give you some insight into what is happening.

  • Netboot gone haywire - "attempt to insert nil value"

I was happily NetBooting and re-imaging using DeployStudio, when everything went haywire. I was not getting any imaging done, and in the process of hunting down what went wrong all **** broke loose.
I have deleted all the NetBoot images from NetBootSP0 and copied a fresh image to that folder. I have tried to stop the NetBoot service in Server Admin, but the service now has a red triangle in it and I can stop nor start the service. When I start Server Admin, I get an error "A connection with a server or service was lost" and it then takes a while for Server Admin to connect to the server to get the services. NetBoot still has a red triangle.
The NetBoot service starts if I enter "serveradmin start netboot", but "serveradmin fullstatus netboot" reveals the following:
2008-10-14 09:25:18.105 serveradmin[18720] Exception in doCommand: * -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value
netboot:error = "NILRESPONSEERR (* -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value)"
I have restarted the server a couple of times over the weekend, but that has not helped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A helpful friend notified me of the following: The NBImageInfo.plist file can get corrupted. If the Name key is missing, the image will not be identified properly. I do not know exactly what the contents of the file should be, but when I added the Name key and restarted NetBoot, all was well.

  • How do I start NetBoot in Lion Server?

I have the NetBoot service checked in server admin under 'services,' but it still has a grey circle next to it under the 'overview' tab (as well as DHCP and DNS).  Furthermore, it doesn't appear under the "services" list in the server application (where you see time machine, VPN, etc on the left side).  How can I start/configure the NetBoot service in Lion Server?

Ah the trick is you need the old server admin app not the thing that gets installed...:

  • Netboot Errors when starting Service Please Help

    Hello,
I'm new to the forums so please let me know if you need additional information.   In Server Admin when I attempt to start Neboot Service I get the following error
The Service has encountered an error
Try to refresh the view (servername/netboot)
    (Cannot_start_service_err)
When I refresh the view it looks to be on.
I also get another error in the server log which is:
    servermgr_netboot: Failed to start tftpd
I get that error the same time I try to start netboot any insight would be greatly appreciated.  We don't have DHCP or DNS running on this server and I don't believe that would cause these errors.  I actually setup a test server on a laptop without those services running and was able to successfully netboot, I believe some configuration files got corrupt.
Thanks for your help in advance

  • Can't start netboot no image

how do i get an image in there....ugh...leopard server 10.5.8...
trying to use deploystudio for imaging imacs in labs....
can't start netboot with out image in as a default

Using Server Admin, configure the NetBoot Service (set up the ports and volumes you wish to share images from), and hit Save. This will lay down the appropriate directory structure (<volname>/Library/NetBoot/NetBootSP0).
Put your images in there and you're good to go.

What does mean and how do i reset this error to work?
    Pleas email repsonse!!

the apple command line manual says "you have not yet
enabled NetBoot on any network port."
You may of already done this but just in case I thought I'd point it out. This error suggests that you have not enabled Netboot on one of your ports. To do so, go to the NetBoot service, click on Settings and Enable one of the ports. i.e. Built in Ethernet.
Also, you need to make sure you are running NFS service and/or DHCP.
I had a similar problem and I think restarting may have helped sort it.

  • Netboot drives not showing up on post start up of client macs

Hello I just had a question regarding netboot my images works fine its just that when I boot up my client computers and hold the alt key to see available drives it does not show any of the netboot or netinstall drives. But when I open a clients computer and press N it boots up on the default image I have selected. is there any way that I can see the drives when I press the alt key when I startup a clients mac to select which netboot image to load? Forgot to mention when I startup a clients computer on there own hard drive and go to the system preferences and check the startup volumes all my volumes appear there no problem

  • NetBoot across subnets with a bootpd relay

    Hello Apple Community!
I've got 4 subnets at my school, each with various Macs around campus.  I have a Mavericks server on each subnet currently, each with their own NetBoot images.  It's a pain to keep everything updated.  I can get a single client Mac (pre-2011) to boot across subnets using the bless command, but that's not really a viable solution for us to run a bless command on each client every single time we want to netboot.  So far, the solution has been just to have dedicated netboot servers on each subnet, but I know there has to be a better way.
This article (OS X Server: How to use NetBoot across subnets - Apple Support) describes three different methods for netbooting across subnets, but two of them are not really viable for us.  Those involve reconfiguring the network to allow BootP data to pass across subnets or configuring one server with multiple network connections, one for each subnet.  However, option #2 describes configuring a bootpd relay.  Based on my reading, this sounds like exactly what I need.  However, I can't find any good documentation to walk me through setting it up.
I've thoroughly read the bootpd man page, which has had me editing the /etc/bootpd.plist on multiple servers.  This hasn't gotten me very far.  My clients still don't see the remote NetBoot server.  It seems like the relay is supposed to redirect broadcasts from the remote Netboot server, through a local NetBoot server to the client.  But I have no idea how to make this work.
Could someone please give me more guidance on what I'm supposed to be doing here?  I'd like to host a single NetBoot server and have any client on any subnet be able to option-boot to see the NetBoot startup options (I have multiple NetBoot images, from Apple Service Toolkit to DeployStudio and Mavericks/Yosemite installers in between).  Even if I could get it to just netboot to one default source (AST), I could deal with that.  I'm also happy to host multiple NetBoot servers, but with all my NetBoot images in one location.  I'm stumped in this multiple subnet environment and I need help.  Please help.

Thanks again for your feedback.  I had forgotten I left the "tftp://" on the IP address.  Though, I've tried that multiple ways, starting with IP only.  Also, per the bootpd man page (https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/bootpd.8.html), <allow/> and <deny/> are lists for MAC address allowances and when nothing is defined everything goes through.  These are there by default, though I will remove them and see what happens.  Also, according to the man page, bootp_enabled enables on all connections when a boolean is set rather than an array.  Though I will still change this also and see what happens.  The array that comes after the netboot_disabled key is auto-generated by NetInstall when you turn the service on in Server.app.
Essentially, that plist comes from a fresh activation of NetInstall.  I deleted the previous .plist, rebooted the server and when I turned on NetInstall, that's what was created, plus my bootp modifications.
All that said, you said that you assumed I started the relay with the 'debug & logging' options enabled.  I haven't started the relay in any active sense.  So far, I've just been modifying this .plist, and rebooting a bunch of times, but that's where I seem to get lost.  Is there a way to actively "start" the relay?  I'd love to look at these 'debug & logging' options.  As for the 'Startup Disk' prefs on the client Mac, they do not show any significant change.  Basically, they just don't see the remote server as a startup option.  I have not gleaned any pertinent info from console, though I'm not sure I know what I'm looking for.
On a side note, I had a wild hair to try something different.  I set my local subnet's server to look at a NetBootSP0 folder that was actually a symlink to a NetBootSP0 folder that was mounted as a file share from the remote NetBoot server.  This really looked like it might work.  When you boot the client, it saw the startup volumes from the remote server.  However, upon boot, it doesn't seem to make the connection and winds up booting back to the internal hard drive.  It was worth a try...

  • Mac shows symbols and takes a long time to start. HELP!!!

When i start my mac it shows me a strange symbol in a grey screen..
It looks like the symbol from the network ( that round blue circle)
Only it goes on and off the whole time.
and it takes ages to start the mac.
And after that is one is gone another one shows up.
this one looks like a map with the finder symbol in it..
and it repeats together with a question mark.
it all started when we changed our internetprovider.
What is it and how can i fix it?
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!
    emac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    shubs,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You're seeing the NetBoot symbol; somehow, your Mac thinks it's supposed to boot off an unavailable network volume. The startup attempt will eventually time out and go on to the next devices it thinks it's supposed to try to boot from, until it eventually reaches your hard drive.
If your Mac is currently booted to the hard drive and usable, go to System Preferences> Startup Disk and select your hard drive's OS X System.
if the eMac is currently off, you can start it while holding down the 'x' key to force it to try to boot from the hard drive (more strictly, from an OS X System on the first partition of the hard drive).
Another option is to reset PRAM (which includes resetting the boot volume setting) by holding down command-option-p-r at startup until you hear three sets of chimes, then release the keys.
Once the startup disk is cleared up, you should go through the various System Preferences settings and make sure everything else is the way you want.

  • It's died! Complete crashed and won't start up, just beeps at me :(

I'm gutted my Macbook Pro has died on me!
I changed the hard disk last night to a 500GB disk, installed OS X, restored from a Time Machine backup. Left it running overnight doing it's thing.
Checked my mail this morning, put it to sleep, got on the train, start watching a video for may be 2 minutes and then it crashed with the screen displaying garbage.
If I try and start it up it beeps every other second or so with the power light flashing.
I can get it to start up if I hold down the power until it does a firmware reset but then it will start, load OS X and crash again.
Took it to an Apple registered store and they tried Netbooting it with no luck.
I've tried running the Apple Hardware Test but that crashes too.
I've been told it could be the logic board but I should put the original hard disk back in to check that first.
Any other solutions before it gets sent back?
I would say it was my fault for changing the disk except this happened once before randomly when I first bought and hadn't changed anything.
Fixed then by doing a PRAM reset but no such luck this time. It's ******!!!
    <Edited by Moderator>

Maybe a long shot, but beeps and flashing lights often indicate RAM problems. Have you tried reseating the RAM?
One thing you could try is to put your old HD in an enclosure and see if it would boot from that. But if it won't boot and run the AHT, I don't expect it would boot successfully from the external.
Something else to consider if whether any cables or connectors might have been bumped or dislodged while doing the hard drive replacement. A loose connection can cause all kinds of problems. You might want to try looking for anything like that.
    Good luck!

The 901 number is additional space added in the scripts. This indicates that the source image size was 0.
Since you are making a NetBoot from Install media, under the covers the installer process is being run to create a NetBoot volume. The media shipped with the 27" iMac is most likely CPU specific and thus the installation fails because you are trying to create the image (i.e. install the system) on an unsupported CPU.
In order to produce a NetBoot from the install media, you'll have to create it on the 27" iMac.
    Hi Brian,
Thanks for the response. This makes perfect sense. I'll give this a try and shout back!

  • NetBoot Image with 10.4.3. won't do diskless mode

    Hi all,
I have set up a NetBoot disk image containing 10.4.3. In NetBoot I have checked the diskless button, but every client that boots from this image seems to ignore the diskless setting, so I can't unmount the client's hard disk to perform an ASR on it.
What is really funny is that my old 10.3.8 image works in diskless mode, but I cannot start any recent Mac using it, of course.
Does anybody know whatis going on here?
    Thanks,
    Stephan

No, nothing special. I'm quite happy the net image app coming with Tiger works now - at least 98%. I had some troubles getting netboot working and in the end "messing arround" with the disk which contains the images did the trick.
I mean, all my settings belonging the server admin where allright, and after creating annother image and delteting an older one, unused one (I just didn't know what else to do) suddenly all worked perfect, and still does.

  • NetBoot Images not "seen" by MM / MBA when booting with ALT without any local bootable Volumes

    Hello Community!
I ran into a very odd Problem trying to start Production and Service Mac Minis or Mac Book Airs from our NetBoot Server holding the ALT Key while the Startup Chime sounds. Image selection is working fine if a local Volume is present. When no local bootable Volume is available the Macs will (in 90% of the Cases) stop responding at the point where the Bootpicker should show all available NetBoot Volumes. The dropdown menu for choosing a Wireless Network is popping up but after that the spinning wheel next to it stops and the Mac wont recognize any input from mouse or keyboard.
The EFI Startup environment is not totally stuck in these cases though, cause sometimes when you restart the NetBoot Service on the Server the NetBoot Volumes will popup on the clients screen.
If you hold the clients "N" key instead to Start Up from the Servers Default NB Image it works like a charm. Also all the other Mac Models have no problem at all Netbooting using the Bootpicker.
Among other things I already tried the following:
    - changing NBI index numbers
    - shortening Image names that are sent out by the Server at the BSDP ACK[LIST] step to reduce the packet size
    - deactivating all Netboot Images but one
    - setting up a second netboot Server and transferring half of the Images to it
the Netboot Log shows that the following client - server communication is repeated over an over:

As a next step I thought of transfering DNS, DHCP and NAT Services to another Machine, although i dont know if that will help.
If you had the same problem or know anything that might help to solve it, i would be very happy if u share your knowledge with me
as i am starting to get insane on this one
    thank you in advance,
    Colin Andrew
