Network backup server with network users

I have a few problems with my backup server:
I was waiting for years to be able to backup easily all the computers of my research lab. This is what I have done after having installed Leopard on all the machines.
Disks: I have setup a RAID 1 array with two 1TB firewire 800 hard drives. The drives have been formated as GUID. Next, I have created one folder for each computer to backup.
Users: I didn't want to create users on my backup server, so I have added our department server (XServe G4/10.4 server) as an open directory server for ma backup server. In system preferences>sharing>AFP, i have added the folders as shares, and given read/write permissions to my network users (1 user/1 share).
Clients: on each client, the share has been mounted and declared as 'time machine'.
The problems: Everything worked flawlessly for a couple of weeks… but now
Shares are disappearing in my system pref>sharing panel. Some of them can be re-shared, but a few simply don't want to. Users permissions sometime change to unknown user.
Can anyone help?
Configuration: Backup server = core 2 duo white iMac 24" with leopard client.
Clients: G4 & G5 towers, G5 and Intel iMacs

It appears that AFP suffers from bugs in Leopard, i.e. sharepoints are badly handled.
The solution is described here:
http://www.installationexperiences.com/?p=81
This is a copy of the page:
Use the dscl command in the terminal application to delete duplicate SharePoint names if your Apple Mac OS X Leopard system is advertising multiple or suffixed shares (-1, -2, etc). Execute sudo dscl, then cd /Local/Default/SharePoints. With an ls, you can see the share names. Stop file sharing from the Sharing Preferences pane, remove the share from the Shared Folders window and uncheck Shared Folder from Get Info on the folder or volume being shared. Next ls in dscl again and if there are still duplicates, delete them all with delete yoursharename in dscl. Next restart File Sharing in Preferences and add shares with the Shared Folders checkbox in the Get Info window. Do not add shares with Shared Folders in the File Sharing Preferences. Leopard has a problem that somehow causes APF and SAMBA SMB shares to be duplicated with a suffix of -1, -2, -3, etc. Mac OS X shows the share with the highest suffix, SMB browsers show all the share names. The above instructions will fix AFP problems. To fix SMB problems, it might be necessary to use the Finder or Terminal to delete all the share name files in /var/samba/shares while File Sharing is turned off. Leopard will re-create all the samba files based on the SharePoints viewable with dscl.
Apple doesn’t seem to be aware of this issue. At least one other person is having this problem as discussed in the Apple Forums Thread 1316884. First level and “product specialist” at Apple Support did not know how to fix this issue. The “product specialist” stated that it was caused by an “echo” due to “redundant” use of Screen Sharing, File Sharing, Web Sharing and Remote Login. According to the Specialist, “that many services are not to be used simultaneously”. Of course, we know that Specialist was wrong.
It appears the problem is inconsistent information between the Shared Folders list in the File Sharing Preferences pane and the check box in the Get Info window. It has also been noticed that shares disappear from the Shared Folders File Sharing Preferences when they are still advertised on the network. By using the share folder check box in Get Info, the problems in the Shared Folders pane may be avoided. In other words, don’t pay any attention to the Shared Folders list. Do all sharing and permissions from the Get Info window.
This problem was experienced trying to establish a file server system in the home. The need is for file and print services available to Windows XP, Linux and Mac OS X systems. An iMac and a MacBook Pro were used to set up the system and it has not been easy. SMB sharing was all but abandoned when the multiple shares were showing up on the Windows XP systems. When the share suffixes showed up on AFP shares on the MacBook Pro, it was very disappointing. This workaround to the Leopard bug may rekindle the effort to establish a Leopard file server for Windows XP clients.
Thanks to a friend, that can fix all things computer, who revealed the dscl utility.
And personal thanks to Steph Mons

    Hi,
You have to check group polices if browsing is enabled.

How to start Integration server with the user XISUPER?
    Regards,

    Mahesh,
In the post installation document, under Creating User XISUPER,
    I see the following,
1.You must now log on to the Integration server host with the user XISUPER, to switch the initial password to a valid password.
2.You must restart the J2EE engine to transfer the user creation to the J2EE immediately.
I am unable to proceed here. Can you please help me to resume the post installation steps ?

  • ACS Windows Server with wrong user authenticatoin

    Hello,
we have a new Windows ACS Server with external user database authentication. Users at the ACS Server were configured, disabled, enabled and deleted by RDBMS synchronization with account actions.
We have the problem that a user could be authenticated through the external LDAP even though if the user or his group is disabled inside the Windows ACS Server.
The same procedure doesn't work with our ACS appliance where user administration is done only through the webinterface .
Does anybody know a solution for this problem?
    Best regards
    Torsten Waibel

Could it be you have unknown user authentication enabled?
If you did, and a username came through authentication in a different format to one one added via dbsync... eg user@domain or domain\user the unknown user policy might legitimately think its a different user. In which case it would depend on what group mapping had been setup.
    Just a thought.

  • Need backup solution with zero user interaction

    Good Day.
I'm putting together a external/offsite backup solution for a client that runs OSX10 Server on a Mac Mini.
Their data is on a Promise SAN, and they currently back up via software daily to an externally attached 4TB Drive.
The big problem is that each day, a user comes in and removes "yesterday's" external drive to give it to the courier who stored it offsite, then they plug in the drive for "today's" backup. Neither the user nor the courier has access to log in to the server to unmount the external drive. Many times, this leaves the external drive in a corrupted state and unusable.
I'm not allowed to give the user of the courier access to the server, and attempts to schedule or script the unmounting of the drives have been troublesome.
I'd like to know if there's a solution out there, possibly an external chassis with removable drives or something similar that can be used to allow for easy removal of the drives to offsite storage that would not require an actual unmounting of the drive.
    All advice is appreciated.

What software are you currently using to do backups?
Not that it will help, but if you were backing up to an external optical drive e.g. DVD or Blu-Ray then they have a physical eject button which would tidily eject the media, unfortunately hard disks and even hard disk docks do not work the same way.
Something that might help would be if whatever backup solution you used was able to work on a Mac that did not need to be logged in as a user, in other words that ran as a Unix style background process. This would mean that as no user is logged in the Finder would not be active and this would reduce but not eliminate the avenues for corruption.
Again it will probably not help you but a different approach used by many is to backup over a WAN or Internet link to another site, with this approach your backup media is already offsite and you don't need to eject it to transport it. This does of course rely on a decent speed link in both directions so as to both allow backups and restores.
Something else to consider, if you used a separate dedicated Mac for doing the backups rather than a server then you could consider giving the courier access to the backup machine without having to give access to a server. If you use encrypted disk images on the backup drive then even with access to the backup machine it maybe possible to still prevent their access to data on it.

  • Dreamweaver on a server with multiple users

We have just recently migrated from GoLive to DW and that
went well. However it was only on my local machine. I need to set
up our sites in DW to access our local server so that my colleagues
can access the sites as well.
What is the recommended way of doing this? Set up the local
site with the server address? What about remote and testing
servers. I still feel I need to manually move our files out to our
stage site and live site as we have to login to those servers to
    access them. Any advice?

    You check them out
    > of your staging server, copying them to your local
    machine, make edits,
    > and then check them back in to the staging server.
Which, by the way, is the only way that checkin/checkout will
    work properly.

  • Connect to server with specified user account

I want my mac connect to some network storage when it start up. So i created a automator app with "get specified servers" and "connect to servers".
Some folders of a servers was set to allow guest to view content only. my mac automatically connect that folder as guest.
So I would like to know how to set the automator to connect that folder with specified account, so that i can have right to right and write.
    Thanks.

Using the Finder, mount the volume from the server.
Using the Finder, create a Mac OS X Alias of the mounted volume.
This will capture the account used to mount the volume.
If you want this volume mounted when you login, put the
alias in your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Startup Items
If you want to open it via an Automator workflow, then just have
Automator open the alias, and the alias will do the rest.

  • Login credentials server with multiple users on 1 Mac

The situation is a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion connecting to a Mac Mini.
The MacBook Pro has 3 users with administrator rights:
    A, B and C.
When user B is logged in and wants to connect to the Mac mini, the login dialog shows the credentials of user A by default.
This happens also after a re-start and first login by user B.
How can I have the system forget the login credentials in the above case so that user B can have the correct default user name in the login window?
    Thanks for your help.

While logged in as User B, open Keychain Access. Find the password entry for connecting to the mini and delete it.
Then, try to log in again. User B likely used User A's login info at some point, maybe testing, to connect to the mini, so those credentials were saved in the keychain.

  • Installing ODBC Drivers on a Server with multiple users.

We are trying to install ODBC drivers on our web server and want to know what is the minimum we can install and be able to add a DSN through the MS ODBC Administrator. This is a server that is used by multiple companies and we do not want to do something that will affect them.
The oracle installation does not warn you when it overwrites existing files, which is why we cannot simply install everything. For example, on my test machine it trashed the Java installation without asking or telling me. I discovered it this morning when I tried to go to a site that uses Java. That was a low risk on the SQL server, because we did not have Java installed. Other elements, though, cannot be risked in that fashion. We have to find out what files are required in order to solve the problem.

    Version 9i on a Windows 2003 Server.

    1) I’m not certain about the overwrite vs separate machine. What happened is that it installed its own Java, which was much older than the Java previously installed. Following the oracle installation, internet explorer was no longer able to find Java at all, prompting for a new Java installation. During the installation, no mention was made of the changes that were being made.
    2) Each company has its own account on our server, its own instance of the database, etc. nowhere in the oracle release notes or the installer could I find anything that provided for a user-limited installation: it was global. Even though the oracle installation suggested, and I accepted, unique folders for its installation targets, the problems mentioned occurred. The web server it wants to install is not possible to be user-limited: it wanted to take over http for the machine.

I have 3 questions for you:
Running a server under root is a huge security hole.My Question: 1) what are the probable security issues while runninga server under
    root ?
are these security issues external(from outside world) or internal(internally
    within a company) ?
Iam basically curious to know external threats.
The problem is the root user can do anything. So if someone finds a
security hole in your server, then they have complete control of your
    system.
The usual reason people want to do this is so they can bind to a port
    <
1024. ie they want their web server to listen to 80.My Question: 2) What is the harm in using port 80 for webserver andwhy do the
people wanted to bind to a port < 1024 ?
People normally use 80 for web servers because that's the well-known
    port.
Personally I would not recommend that you go that route. I would
recommend that you start the server as a very unprivileged user andbind
it to some port (say 7001).
Most firewalls support redirecting ports. Your firewall can redirect
    80
on the external net to 7001 on the internal net. That's the solution
    I
would recommend. My Question: 3) Suppose iam having a cluster of 2 Managed servers runningon port
7070. And Iam having a Iplanet server working as a Webserver that basicallyproxies
requests to this cluster. Then what is the best approach that i shouldfollow
in this context.....to be honest with you ....i still couldnot understandwhat
does "binding" the webserver port to a managed server in weblogic mean.
I would have your firewall redirect 80 to whatever port Iplanet is
listening on and then have iplanet proxy to WLS.
Do not run your WLS servers as root.

Iam sorry for asking these "silly" questions(in your opinion) ...butiam a bit
    confused.

There is a set uid option in WLS where you start the server as root
    and
then after it binds to the low port, it will switch to another userthat
    you specify.

  • Start SQL Server in single user mode with parameter -m doesn't work well

C:\Windows\system32>net start mssqlserver /m "Microsoft SQL Server Management St

The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting.
The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service was started successfully.

    2> go
    select @@servername;
    myserver
    (1 rows affected)
    1>
As you can see, I'm still able to connect with sqlcmd prompt to SQL Server. According production doc of SQL Server 2014, it should not be conncting by sqlcmd. it shall only be connected by SSMS.
below the original doc on msdn:
Start SQL Server in Single-User Mode
    Provide Feedback
Under certain circumstances, you may have to start an instance of SQL Server
in single-user mode by using the startup option -m. For
example, you may want to change server configuration options or recover a
damaged master database or other system database. Both actions require starting
an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode.
Starting SQL Server in single-user mode enables any member of the computer's
local Administrators group to connect to the instance of SQL Server as a member
of the sysadmin fixed server role. For more information, see Connect to
SQL Server When System Administrators Are Locked
    Out.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, note the
    following:
Only one user can connect to the server.
The CHECKPOINT process is not executed. By default, it is executed
    automatically at startup.
    Note
Stop the SQL Server Agent service before connecting to an instance of SQL
Server in single-user mode; otherwise, the SQL Server Agent service uses the
    connection, thereby blocking it.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, SQL Server
Management Studio can connect to SQL Server. Object Explorer in Management
Studio might fail because it requires more than one connection for some
operations. To manage SQL Server in single-user mode, execute Transact-SQL
statements by connecting only through the Query Editor in Management Studio, or
    use the
    sqlcmd utility.
When you use the -m option with sqlcmd or
Management Studio, you can limit the connections to a specified client
application. For example, -m"sqlcmd" limits connections to a
single connection and that connection must identify itself as the
sqlcmd client program. Use this option when you are starting
SQL Server in single-user mode and an unknown client application is taking the
only available connection. To connect through the Query Editor in Management
Studio, use -m"Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - Query".
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn Xiao,
For starting SQL Server instance in single user mode, we can add –m; parameter in SQL Server Configuration Manager, also we can run CMD with ‘Run as administrator’ and input the following statement.
    NET START MSSQLSERVER /m
I do a test in SQL Server 2014 Express version, after starting SQL with Single User Mode, SQL Server will only accept one connection. If you connect to SQL Server with a user account, the following error will occur.
Login failed for user ‘domain\username’. Reason: Server is in single user mode. Only one administrator can connect at this time.
However, in your situation, you can connect to SQL Server and run T-SQL statement successfully, it can be due to connection with the administrator account in your sqlcmd.

  • 2 AnyConnect queries backup server and not connecting.

We are in the process of swapping over from the old IPSEC VPN client to AnyConnect for remote users.
    A couple of questions,
    1) With the IPSEC VPN client you could configure a Backup server. with AnyConnect there is not an option for this as far as I can see. Is there an option for this anywhere?
    2) Sometimes AnyConnect will not connect, I have found the way round this is to access an Internet website first, once that comes up then AnyConnect will come up ok. Is there something I can do about this such as timeout, script a website location to try first within Any Connect?

    Hi,
You can add multiple backup servers by editing the profile xml file or by using the Anyconnet profile editor.
What version of the Anyconnect client are you using? How do you connect to the Internet? Are you connecting via a proxy?
    Thanks

the staus i got when i ran sp_helpserver is "timeouts, no net password encryption, writable , enable login redirection"
Please help me installing my backupserver.
    many thanks in advance.

Please confirm that you're getting this error message while trying to CREATE the backupserver.
The reason I ask is because you mention seeing these messages in the backupserver errorlog, but you wouldn't be getting any messages in the backupserver errorlog unless you were able to successfully install a backupserver.
Also, what is your dataserver/backupserver version strings? (dataserver -v , backupserver -v)
A quick google search turns up Note 1963584:Open Server Error 16400 in ASE Backup Server log when dumping a database. [References SAP note 1963584.]
    - same errors as you're seeing, but errors generated while attempting to perform a dump command (ie, backupserver has been installed and is up and running)
    - appears to be an issue when "net password encryption" is enabled/true for SYB_BACKUP; if you have net password encryption enabled ... what happens if you disable it?

  • How to configure Time Capsule etc as a local network server with remote access server and for backups

I'm trying to set up new 3TB Time Capsule as a wireless network server (with remote access) and for backups for use in a small office (of two Macs). We have a late 2011 Intel MBP and a brand new MBA both running 10.8.3. We have two external 1TB hard drives that until now have been attached the MBP for storage and backing up that computer, which up until now was the only machine in use. The MBA is for a new employee and we need to share and work on the same files, both here in the office and ideally remotely too via Back to my Mac. The MBP needs constant access. The MBA only occasional. The TC has 7.6.3 firmware and we've set it up using AirPort Utility 6.2. It is currently attached to the MBP via ethernet and it has internet access via a Sagemcom router attached to TC's WAN port.
We've managed to set up a wireless network and both have wireless internet access through the TC
But there are so many issues I don't know where to begin - so I'll start with a description of what we're trying to achieve:
I planned to use the TC as the main server drive and place all the key folders and files there so that both of us can access them wirelessly and remotely. The MBP would back up to the TC and to one or two of the external hard drives - one being attached to the Mac via USB and the other being attached to the TC's USB port. We would back up the important data on the TC using SuperDuper and copy it to both external USB drives.
So , first of all, is that a sensible configuration? Should the 'server' be the one of the external hard drives attached to the TC USB port, backed up regularly to the TC using SuperDuper?

But when you say 'So using USB drive does make sense if you want to use it as a file store', do you mean a USB drive plugged into the TC? I hope that I can attach an external drive to the TC so we can all access and read/write the content wirelessly via the TC network or remotely.
Yes, USB.. as it prevents the sparsebundle mixing with data files. I guess it does depend on how much data you are talking about.. you can use the TC internal disk if you are careful and setup the sparsebundle with fixed sizes once you create them..
And to be clear, I wasn't planning on backing up remotely via BTMM - only to access the shared folders on the TC data drive or USB external drive attached to it. I'm assuming that's ok?
Yes, that is fine. Sorry I got the impression you were going to do backup over internet.
What is the alternative? Having a Mac Mini that's always on? Do I need OS X Server etc.?
A mini would be great.. you don't need server edition.. but I would see how the TC goes.. since you have it and it is much lower power consumption device. It is just that its design is not really for file storage.
One big problem I have is to do with the sharing permissions. For everything on the TC or attached external drive attached to it, it says I have only custom access and every time I try to change permissions it says I don't have the permission to do that. And if I try to change the owner it says my user name is not valid.
How is the security setup on the TC?
The security is a bit tricky.. I must admit since I run windows computer in the network, that I simply turn on the guest account to read and write access. For a business setup that might not be adequate  but it allows me full access to all the files.
If you setup the TC with user accounts then you are in trouble. That makes it very difficult to access, especially if one person already has the file open you may find a second user cannot login. I am not sure as I have avoided the security. IMHO it is meaningless.. since anyone with physical access to the TC can press the reset for one second and has full access.. and can add or change passwords.
