Network clients can't log in some days...

but can on others!
Since upgrading to Mavericks and Server 3 I have an issue with local network clients not being able to log in to their accounts some days but can on others (yesterday was fine, today a problem again).
It seems that quite a few people are experiencing similar issues but I can't find a solution I am confident to try out or that replicates my situation.
Before you tart throwing techincal advice at me, I am not a networking expert nor a Mac genius, so please make your explanations clear and simple. Thank you.
I have tried rebooting the server and clients, no success (today - although three days ago that did work);
I have 'unbound' and re bound the clients (which worked four days ago, but not today - they are still showing green light);
I have verified the disk permissions on the server (there were a few errors all bar one are corrected).
Any other (simple) suggestions? Even if it is just things to check and to post more info here to help diagose the problem.

I'll try to keep this simple, but network troubleshooting sometimes... isn't.   This reply will also probably get a little wordy. 
There are three parts here...
First, ask the server about its own local network and DNS configuration.   Functional networking and proper local DNS being fundamental to how servers work, and how servers can authenticate with your remote clients.  To do this, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmless, non-destructive, diagnostic command — this command will spot most of the issues that can arise with local networking and local DNS:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
The sudo will require entry of an administrative password.  There may be a one-time warning displayed about the perils of using sudo.  The command will then display some local network configuration output (including the IP address of the server), and finally an indication that either no changes are needed, or that there are network or configuration or DNS errors.   If changes are required, post the output.  (If you want or need to obfuscate, please do so consistently here, and please switch the domain part of your host names to "example.com", "example.net" or "example.org".)
Second... On the client systems, launch System Preferences via  > System Preferences..., select Network, select the network connection (WiFi or Ethernet, most likely) that you are using, then select Advanced..., then select DNS, then confirm that the clients are referencing only the IP address of your local OS X Server or whatever DNS server you are using on your local network, and that your client systems are not referencing any ISP DNS servers, Google DNS servers, nor any other DNS servers that are not on your local network.
Third... Please also describe your network configuration in just a little detail.   For instance: are you using an all-wired Ethernet network, or are you using WiFi, or some combination of WiFi and wired networking?   Are you using a firewall?  Any network switches?  Do you have more than one switch? 
If you are using WiFi for your connections, are you located in an area where there may be nearby WiFi networks?

    i have deleted cookies, cache, history, everything. Reinstalled the application (Firefox and Safari) but nothing.

    I can't see any proxy setting in network preferences so will need to go into virus barrier and check.
    Reading the "recommended text" on Virus's for homework.
    Tomorrow it will be Appzapper for them both if the patient shows no sign of improvement.

  • Network users can't log on to client computers

    Hi,
    This is my first OSX server install, so bear with me if I am missing something!
    I have searched for a solution, but cant find one similar maybe I am doing something drastically wrong?
    The Problem Summarised;
    New Mac OSX Snow Leopards Mac Mini server, clean install.
    New iMac OSX Snow Leopard Client.
    Can not log in using the network users. I have joined to the open directory, I get a green dot saying network available and all network users listed.
    When I try to login, the OSX Login screen shakes as if incorrect password is being used.
    In a bit more detail
    Ok, I have installed a new Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, created a handful of user accounts and then bound my iMac snow leopard client to the server (using the open directory utility under the accounts login preferences).
    I have also added the computer as a client computer under the servers workgroup manager app.
    I have also (using the workgroup manager on server) selected the client computer, selected preferences and added the users to the access part.
    The client now shows the OSX login box with a green dot saying network accounts available. The network accounts all appear.
    However, when I try to login as one of the network users, the login box just shakes and wont let me login.
    Any ideas? If there is a known bit of documentation, could someone point me to it?
    * saw this posted in a different secretion and I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE.

    My guess is:
    Have you created or pointed their home directories to a specific location?
    Each network user in WGM user needs to have their home directories defined to a folder on the local machine or a folder/location on the server. Here is an example... my user has it's Home defined as being within the /Users folder.

    If this is not done, you will see the results you've described so far... the appearance of a successful login, then the shaking login window.

  • Connected to network but can't log on

    My iBook G4 works great on my home wireless network, but not at my workplace. It connects to the network, has a strong signal, the WEP password is correct, but I can't log on to any sites or do eMail. Any suggestions? Anyone? I'm not exactly a Mac novice, but I've tried everything I know in preferences and Airport settings, with no luck.

    I believe you have DHCP addressing turned on on your network settings. Does your mac aquire a normal LAN IP, or does the IP begin with "169"?
    In either case, looks like your workplace's wireless router doesn't have DHCP server turned on, or it doesn't allow WAN connections to machines with non-registered MAC addresses. You should check with your workplace's network administrator, or examine the router's settings, if you have administrator access to it.

  • Why can I log into some sites or view them correctly in Safari

    I have tried a few times to view the weather web site for one of my local stations, KOMO news. I can view this easily on my desktop computer, but a different version of the web page/site comes up on my IPod that does not have the same info, and there is no way of getting to the info I want to view (the 7-day forecast). What is this? And is there a way I can override what I'm seeing to view the web page I want to see? 
    Also, last night I tried logging into a few sites -- my web mail and utility bill pay -- with username and password, and instead of logging me in, the pages would keep "reverting" back to blank fields that I'd try again, and again (not even showing an error message, which is usually what I get if I enter wrong info.). It never worked, though it did work this morning from my desktop computer. Why won't Safari/Ipod let me log onto these sites?

When client gets connected to the server the server will send initial message to client and flush (but here is the problem) but the client does not get the message and is waiting for the message input.readObject() it just stuck there, what is the reason??

    Thank you for your suggestion. But I tried to chain the BufferedStream between ObjectStream and CipherStream. The problem still exit.
    In the c/s sides, there are two functions to use the socket. One is the protocol part which does the handshaking before everything is prepared. Then a JTextField object is enabled and it will also use the socket and the chained stream to commnicate with the other part.
    The concrete problem is strange, it seems there is some hidden buffer which holds the message. When a message is send and flush, it doesn't go to the net, instead it is hold somewhere until an other message is send and flush. So there are some delay. So in my code I have to use sendDate("\n") to push the useful message out into to net. And on the other side, eatBoundary() to get rid of the "\n" and then getMsg() to recieve the useful message.
    However, for some time the communiction stuck, both sides are waiting. But when you send another message, the previous and the new message appear on the other side. In the way, it is hard to implement the handshaking which requires reliable syncronization. You have met the same problem before? If you think it is not clear enough could you send me your email addr and I can send you the source code.

    Some users have obtained an older AirPort base station to use with vintage computing hardware, so their early 802.11b cards could still get whatever level of 'security' without detracting from later wireless systems for newer devices that use a different protocol or frequency. By use of a different wi-fi for the old stuff.
    An ethernet splitter or hub device can allow more than one base station to operate. A backward-compatible AirPort extreme from about 2004 could do, if you go there.
    {I gave away a very nice 800MHz 17" iMac G4, it didn't see much use. Then I found the new owners had left it unplugged for a year, & with the 1/2AA 3.6V lithium battery dead, it would not start. And they got rid of it...}
    Happens I have an original Apple refurbished AirPort Extreme orb last model (the high end in its day) still in the generic brown Apple box; unused and never tested at my end of the road. And that was a spare. Also I found three more used ones in second hand stores, for about $3. each. Alas, the tiny early model AirPort express does a fine job, too. I'm using one as they work with both b/n wi-fi.

  • 10.5.4 client can't log on to 10.5.4 server

    I get this message when trying to log in using a network account. "You are unable to log in to the user account "test1" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
    I have set up the Directory Utility on the client and the server shows as reesponding normally.
    The server is set up to auto create home folders and has done for the 2 test users i have created.
    I'm not sure what else to check. Any help greatly appreciated.

    Oops, While playing around I had restricted the service access to just 2 accounts that were not the ones i was testing network logons from. doh!

  • I can't log into my iTunes account. I logger out a few days ago to trouble shoot because I was trying to redeem some iTunes cards but when i pressed redeem nothing happened. Now when i press sign in and then choose existing Apple ID, nothing happens

After clicking "sign in" at the bottom of the apps main page, it brought up another menu where I clicked "Choose existing Apple ID". After pressing this the menu disappeared and nothing happened. I tried this multiple times and received the same result each time. I tried the other available option of creating a new AP ID to log in with and that one worked perfectly fine. I am clueless as to why the log in for me is either not able to load or just completely blocking me from getting back into my iTunes account on my phone. Not only can I not listen to the music I currently have, but I cannot log in to purchase the new music that I wanted to with my unused iTunes gift cards

    Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
    You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception.

    I've been having trouble setting up a replica so I figured I'd trying just connecting to the OD server as a client. I set up things in "Open Directory Access" and then

    But I still can't log into this system (or su to myself). If I try I get this in secure.log

    No reason to be angry as it's in his book on page 112. You possibly did not understand its significance until you'd done it yourself?
    In an AD-OD integrated environment (I prefer this to 'Magic Triangle' as there is no triangle as such) there are no users in OD. They're all in AD. You nest AD Users or Groups (best to use groups) into an OD Group and apply managed preferences that way. You could bypass group nesting if you wish and simply create OD Computer Groups instead. Manage the workstations directly. All users admin or not, local or otherwise would have have those preferences applied.
    "Are preferences correctly inherited between AD and OD groups and users?"
    In my experience they are.
    "What if I want users in some AD Groups to be controlled users on the client and users in other AD groups to be admins on the client?"
    You can do the first part of the question using the provided Server Tools, PM or WGM. To make users local admins you use a terminal command. You don't want to be doing this for student accounts. To make AD groups administrators access Directory Utility's Advanced Options section in the AD plug-in. Clicking on the Administrative tab should give you the option you may be looking for? Alternatively you could use the command line (man dsconfigad) as there are more settings available using it than there are in the GUI.
