Network configuration files

Hi all,
I am not clear with tnsname.ora, listener.ora, sqlnet.ora files.
1. Actually what is the pruprose of all these files?
2. What is the information available in all these files?
3. In a Client-Server environment, whether all these files are stored in client side machine and in server side machine?
4. If some files available in client side what information available in those files?
5. If some files available in server side what information available in those files?
6. Is there any other files are also available related to network configuration?
Thanks
Sandeep

The link provided by Aman has extensive explanations. In brief :
- listener.ora is a Server configuration file
- tnsnames.ora is a Client configuration file
- sqlnet.ora both of them
but on 10g onwards no one of them is mandatory, that is
- if using default parameters (name=listener, protocol=tcp, port=1521) you can start the listener without any configuration (no listener.ora, this is valid for 9i as well)
- on the Client you can use the Easy Connect method (see the documentation), which does not need any configuration (no tnsnames.ora)
- sqlnet.ora is never mandatory.

  • Where is the Network configuration file?

    I have a G4 Laptop that connects readily to the University Hotspot as well as to my home wifi router. However the College would prefer I use the admin network which uses the same wifi hardware but is secure, unlike the hotspot network. The system is predominantly populated with XP machines and the IT folks have attempted to get me on the admin network but authentication with WPA Personal, WPA Enterprise, WPA2 Personal, and WPA2 Enterprise do not work. When I try to use Airport Assist or diagnostics nothing helps. If I ask Airport to see the "Configuration" file it sends me to an area of Microsoft related files which is an enigma to me.I suspect something in the configuation file, wherever it is, is important and perhaps similar to what XP uses. Does anyone have any information about hooking a Leopard G4 into a windows based network?

    You shouldn't have to deal with any such configuration files. Pull down the AirPort menu bar item. In the resulting list you should see the "admin network". Select that, then enter the supplied password. If that doesn't work, check and report exactly what happened.

  • XML Schema validation error in network configuration. Missing DnsRef

    When ever we try to make changes to a Virtual network we receive
    XML Schema validation
    error in network configuration. Missing DnsRef
    We can't make any changes to the Virtual network.
    The DNS ref exists as well.
    Considering exporting network config and re-importing however we have a lot of networks configured and want to be sure this is the correct way to proceed.
    Any feedback much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    We are having the same problem, so you are not alone.
    I had an extensive call with Azure premium support and we where able to determine that:
    - Nothing is missing or in the wrong place in my exported .xml file.
    - Any changes to the VNET's using the web gui interface of https://manage.windowsazure.com is not possible when you have dns servers and use an gateway
    - You can download the .xml configuration file of the network and make manual changes to it, then import it again , to add/remove dns servers and or subnet's.
    I am currently waiting for an solution,  i have let them lower the urgency from A to B (because i can make changes trough xml) and responded to the next support contact (saying he will continue with the issue) that the problems seems to be with azure and
    he should speak with the previous person helping me.  I have not heard from Azure support since.

    I hope microsoft is going to resolve this soon, as i do not want to edit my xml for little things like adding a subnet all the time. I have requested an status update in the issue.
    Should anyone have more information on this, please share it here.

  • Oracle 11g - Network Configuration check

    Hi All,
    This is my first time here and I am a newbie to Linux and Oracle installation.
    I just finished installing Linux Enterprise version 5 ( provided by Oracle corp).
    At the time of installation I did not do any type of network configuration and let the default network connection take effect.
    After installing all the pre requirements for the Oracle 11g installation on my laptop I was stopped with a warning on the Oracle univesal Installer - product specific Prerequisite check.
    This is what it gave me---
    Checking Network Configuration requirements..
    Check complete. The overall results of this check is : Not executed <<<
    Recomendation : Oracle supports installation on systems with DHCP-assigned public IP addresses. However the primary network interface on the system should be configured with a Static IP Address in order for the oracle to function properly.See the installation guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP.
    I checked with the manuals and do not find any information about how to fix it.
    The info given in the manual is
    Installing on DHCP Computers
    Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) assigns dynamic IP addresses on a network. Dynamic addressing enables a computer to have a different IP address each time it connects to the network. In some cases, the IP address can change while the computer is still connected. You can have a mixture of static and dynamic IP addressing in a DHCP system.
    In a DHCP setup, the software tracks IP addresses, which simplifies network administration. This lets you add a new computer to the network without having to manually assign that computer a unique IP address.
    Now i made some changes to the Network Config as root user and my Network configuration file looks like ( ie. /etc/hosts)
    127.0.0.1 localhost StaticIP
    It was previously something like
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost.
    As per the installation documents where ever i had references to localhost, i had left the localhost with the same name ' localhost' and have not changed it. Now it has StaticIP and I am not sure how to proceed.
    What must I do?
    I want to fix this error and also want oracle to work.
    Thanks for your help!!

    Thanks a lot guys to respond to this. I am using OEL5 ( supplied by Oracle Corp) and Oracle 11g. Installation of Linux takes about 40 minutes and installation of Oracle takes about an hour to 2 hours. Not sure why some RPM's do not show up on the CD's provided by Oracle.
    So I tried to reinstall Linux . But the whole problem is, the Network Screens ( during installation) do not show up at all. It just skips that portion and goes to the Screen where there is the world Map and tells you to set up the time and date. I tried installing Linux many times and those Network configuration screens do not show up at all.
    Here is my dilemma. After installing Oracle 11g, and immediately accessing the site https://localhost.localdomain:1158/em takes me into the OEM.
    But after I shut down my machine and boot up again, I am unable to use the OEM's site https://localhost.localdomain:1158/em. Instead I get the message
    ===============================
    Unable to Connect
    Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.localdomain:1158
    1. The site could be temporaily unavailable
    2. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection
    3. If your computer is protected by firewall or proxy, make sure that firefox is permitted to access the Web.
    ===================================
    I am thinking the problem is with 2. I do not have any firewall in my machine and i have also disbaled SELINUX.
    I want to configure the computer so i can use the OEM in my Linux laptop.
    My $ cat /etc/hosts gives
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain.
    Please help me setup the Network so i can connect to 11g OEM.
    And BTW this laptop is not even used to connect to the Internet.
    Thanks
    Sulu

    Additional info:
    I have connected 2 PCs with LAN (Ethernet) cable and want configure them for exchanging files. Both running Arch Linux. I am following the Network Configuration wiki page from the beginning. Didn't have luck with DHCP/dynamic IP, so trying Static IP this time. Restarting the pc with network.service enabled results in same error (in systemctl --failed). Same error message on both PCs.
    Trying to run ExecStart lines one by one:
    $ sudo /sbin/ip link set dev lan up
    $ sudo /sbin/ip addr add 192.168.1.2/24 dev lan
    RTNETLINK answers: File exists
    $ sudo /sbin/ip route add default via 192.168.1.1
    RTNETLINK answers: File exists
    Does this mean there already is IP address and route assigned? If so, how to find out which service has done that? Do I need to remove it? Am I following the right wiki page (didn't find another)?
    What am I doing wrong and how can I correct this error? / Point me in right direction.

    have you checked if the network file exists?
    Oh thanks, that line was causing problems! Now I do have network.service(s) running on both PC's with this content:
    [Unit]
    Description=Connect to my desktop/laptop
    Wants=network.target
    Before=network.target
    BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-lan.device
    After=sys-subsystem-net-devices-lan.device
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    ExecStart=/sbin/ip link set dev lan up
    ExecStart=/sbin/ip addr add 192.168.1.2/24 dev lan
    ExecStart=/sbin/ip route add default via 192.168.1.1
    ExecStop=/sbin/ip addr flush dev lan
    ExecStop=/sbin/ip link set dev lan down
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    I don't get any errors, and this is network's status (on both PCs) when cable is connected
    $ sudo systemctl restart network
    $ systemctl status network
    network.service - Connect to my desktop
    Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/network.service; disabled)
    Active: active (exited) since Thu 2013-04-04 22:43:22 AMT; 8s ago
    Process: 9761 ExecStop=/sbin/ip link set dev lan down (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    Process: 9757 ExecStop=/sbin/ip addr flush dev lan (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    Process: 9768 ExecStart=/sbin/ip route add default via 192.168.1.1 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)

    Process: 9764 ExecStart=/sbin/ip link set dev lan up (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    And here wiki page is no more help. How can I test connection?
    I try to ping, and it works on both machines (if it's the right thing to test?)
    $ ping -c3 192.168.1.2
    PING 192.168.1.2 (192.168.1.2) 56(84) bytes of data.

  • Reset WLAN network configuration - What .plist file?

    I would like to reset my wireless network configurations, delete all network related preferences and settings and start over. This helped me before to solve a problem that I was unable to connect to a  network at work.
    The 802.11x settings won't load the certificate from the domain that will enable me to connect to my corporate WLAN network.
    Can somebody tell me which files these were, so that I can delete them and start again.
    Any ideas why this keeps happening and what files these are?
    Thanks for any replies and all help.

    In Keychain Access, search for the certificate. I don't know how you can check if it is loading. You might just try deleting it and reinstalling.
    There are functions in the Keychain Access>Certificate Assistant>Evaluate

  • Imac is no longer able to open the Configuration file

    Hi ,
    I have an imac ( ilamp) 20' connected to ADSL, via Netopia Router which is connected to the Airport extreme connected to imac, for the PB Aluminum Tiger 10.4.5. we both can connect. PB can print via imac/printer.
    The imac is no longer able to open the Configuration file, when i enter the pswd which is correct, i get the message "The Airport Admin. Utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station an error occurred while reading the configuration "
    My Beau updated Airport to V5.7, this is the first time since the update I've tried to access the conf. file for the imac which i have done numerous times prior.
    I have a new base station Ip address 254.128.0 in Airport Utility Admin, on the imac which does not reflect my network settings anywhere, and is not what it use to be, i think, it was one value different than the PB.Base station IP. I do not know how it changed neither one of us changed it.
    I tried using the Airport Setup assistant (imac), I received this message:
    "Appropriate Airport hardware was bot found on this computer,if you recently
    Installed, an Airport card,please shut down your computer$ make sure the card is properly istalled."
    The imac does not have a card, nor do i think it needs one.
    I would like to be able to at least open the configuration file.
    Thank you for reading my post.

    Hi Kes, a star for the company !
    I made an error on my first post I have a Netopia modem, Airport router.
    And so it remains, i guess that there must be an easy answer somewhere
    that I am missing that I/we should read, some direction to that would be helpful, and I would be very appreciative.
    As I said the password had been set, and it is not an issue of that being forgotten, i wondered if it was changed back to "public" tried, not it.
    particular because everytime the imac wakes one of the folders on ( no one else in office just me and boyfriend and it is his work folder he has a copy on the PB.( the folder on desk top has been clicked on, the one with sensitve info, i have backed the folder up and secure trashed it, just in case some security issue hacking has taken place, thats closing the barn door after the fact.
    Good luck,w/ this Q.

  • Reading Encrypted Password from Configuration File and Decrypt it at login

    Hi All,
    My application reads a configuration file to connect to the ORACLE database. The values defined for password are clear text as given below:
    user: 'mh'
    password='abcd1234'
    Is there is any way I can give an encrypted password in the configuration file instead of a clear text file and at the time of login ORACLE decrypts it. I am using ORACLE 11g Database.
    My company have a requirement that passwords are not stored in the clear in properties files. the reason being I suppose that if the password is stored in plaintext someone could hit the property file directly, get the password and then connect to the database with it.
    For a regular user connecting through an Oracle client or SQL Developer they would need to have the plaintext password in order to connect.
    its based on the requirements of
    International Standards Organization Guidance
    ISO 17799 9.5.4 requires password management systems to:
     enforce the use of individual passwords
     allow users to select and change their own passwords if appropriate
     enforce a choice of quality passwords
     force regular changes of passwords
     maintain a record of previous user passwords to prevent re-use
     not display passwords when they are being entered
     store password files separately from application system data
     store passwords in encrypted form using a one way encryption algorithm
     alter default vendor passwords following installation of software
    So if I can store the password encrypted using a one way algorithm then hacker/user couldn't decrypt it and then access the database.
    I have feeling there is a way of configuring this in Oracle advanced Security, but just can't quite get it to work.

    So if I can store the password encrypted using a one way algorithm then hacker/user couldn't decrypt it and then access the database.... and neither can your application. Encryption is needed in this case. The decryption must be written into your application. I've written my own in some cases, but finding a library for your development language is a smarter solution.
    One alternative is using an Oracle wallet. It doesn't fit every circumstance and does have some maintenance headaches.
    You can set up a basic secure password store to encrypt and store the password for a given user@instance combination, and then connect to the database without passing a password. SQL*Net adds in the appropriate password from the wallet for when you connect.

    Advanced Security Option also allows you to set up a Public Key Infrastructure connections (SSL encryption and/or authentication). It also uses a wallet to store the SSL certificates and credentials. I don't have personal experience on this approach.
    SSL and the wallet allow you to connect to the database similar to CONNECT/@net_service_name or sqlplus /@net_service_namehttp://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/network.111/b28530/asossl.htm#CIHCBIEG

  • Error -32810 occurred at The FieldPoint server initialization failed. Possible causes: 1. Missing or corrupt configuration file; 2. Failed to create callbacks. : FP Open.vi

    I have two cFP-2120 RT controller. They both have NI-Serial RT2.5.6, DataSocket for LV RT4.2, NI-VISA 3.6, FP Drivers 5.1.0, FP VI Manager 3.1.0 LV RT 7.1.1 installed. But one same vi can run on one controller but not another.
    the error message got when it runs on another controller is "Error -32810 occurred at  The FieldPoint server initialization failed. Possible causes: 1. Missing or corrupt configuration file; 2. Failed to create callbacks. : FP Open.vi"
    I wonder by what it is caused?
    Thanks

    Hi Matthew,
    As mentioned previously, this KnowledgeBase article may be of some help. Also, if your code is being run on an embedded controller and then a network controller (not embedded), you will need to run the program differently. On the embedded controller, you should deploy your VI in a Project Explorer or programmatically (as described here.) However, you do not need to deploy the program to a network controller, but simply run the VI.
    I would also suggest creating a new .IAK file. Do you still see the same error? Also, double-check that the software installed on the controller matches the software installed on the host PC. If you have any file paths associated with one FieldPoint controller, ensure that you are changing them to match the second controller.
    Please keep us posted on your troubleshooting steps. Have a great day!

  • Can I replace an older Airport Extreme with a newer one by importing configuration file

    Can I import the configuration file from an older Airport base station into a newer replacement Airport base station?  It would seem this would save me a lot of extra work.  First, it would hopefully save time by automatically configuring the new base station without me having to fiddle with the settings.  Second, it might hopefully save some more time if I would not have to re-enter the network parameters for all the devices currrently connected to my Airport (wi-fi) network.
    Read on for more details.
    My old Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is not a gigabit one.  Moreover, it's been experiencing some hardware failures recently.  So, I recently purchased a new Apple Airport Extreme (base station) that is a gigabit one (Model# ME918LL/A with 802.11ac Wi-FI).  Now, I'd like to replace the older base station with this newer one with the MINIMAL amount of disruption and manual work possible.
    Regards,
    Tony

    I relaced an older AEBS with the new one, recently, and did not need to import anything, but if you can save the configuration file from your old one, then you can import it to the new one. I've never tried that when I switched, and it didn't seem to matter which suggests the configuration file may be on disk somewhere.

  • Use of Configuration file in other appliance

    We have a disaster recovery ESA which needs to be in-sync with the production ESA. All the appliances are C670s. Is there an easier way to synchronize both production and DR appliance other than clustering? Can configuration file from production ESA be imported to the ESA in DR?

    As long as they are both running the same AsyncOS revision - yes.
    Save the production ESA configuration.
    Save the DR ESA configuration.
    Open both with text editor (Notepad++, etc.) and copy the "Network Configuration" section for the DR ESA.  Paste this same section to the production ESA configuration - and save as different file name, ie. new_DR_esa.xml.
    Load this configuration from the DR ESA, submit/commit.

  • An OS-Intergrated place to store per-user application configuration files.

    A Chairde,
    I'm developing an application that could be deployed on multiple platforms. I'm looking for a location to store per-user configuration files in a OS-integrated way.
    I use a utility class to determine the OS of the users machine. I know from experience that Windows NT5+ likes to store per-user settings/configurations in the %APPDATA% path (which is usually C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\Roaming\<vendor>\<software> etc.) I'm using a call to the environment labels to determine it's location.
    I'm a linux user myself, so I'm aware that most UNIX based Operating Systems like to store personal configurations in hidden folders in the user's home directory (ex /home/<username>/.<application> etc.), Obviously, I'm using a call to the system property user.home to determine that location.
    My Question is in relation to Mac OS and Mac OS X, where would it be a safe location to store per-user configurations? I know OS X is BSD/UNIX based so is it safe to assume to store them as a hidden subfolder of the user.home directory? What about Mac OS classic? Where are per-user settings stored, or is it like Windows 9x and NT4 and lacks proper multi-user setups (although NT4 is somewhat more prepared then 9x) ?
    It would be much appreciated if anybody has any ideas.
    Is Mise,
    Seán Mac Aodha
    PS. I'm not using Javas Property files etc. I've rolled my own exchangeable format for storing key,value pairs.

    I've used databases in the past to store local files but clients have sometimes run into trouble when the database daemon goes down or doesnt start-up normally because of a "improper" shutdown etc.
    In my own implementation of "Settings Files" i have serialized hashtables marked with appropriate metadata stored to the users "application data", a backup or original copy of those settings in the common directory shared by my application framework and then in a networked enviroment, the Settings can be hosted on a database server, so the user can travel between client machines and keep their settings (and files) with them.
    I have, with a bit of googling, come across the most obvious page i should have looked at in regards to Apple Mac OS X
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPFileSystem/Articles/WhereToPutFiles.html
    According to Apple's guidlines, the most suitable place to store User configuration files is in the ~/Library/Application Support/<Application Name> directory.
    and for System-wide configuration files, /Library/Application Support/<Application Name> rather then storing them with the application in the /Applications directory.

  • How to create bulk configuration files from a template for staging?

    Hello,
    We have created a sample configuration for ISRG2 2901 Router.  The sample configuration is long, and with copy/paste it is possible to skip some lines, and it is difficult to ensure the configuration of every device is standardized due to this error possibility. What we are trying to achieve is first create a template from this sample configuration file, and then create configuration files for each device seperately and automatically. After creating this configuration instances, we want to be able to distribute the configuration files (and possibly the ios) to the devices during the staging phase. Since there are about 1000 2901 routers, creating configuration files is important?
    From searching we have found the following tools:
    1) CCE (Cisco Configuration Engine): This tool seems to be very efficient for distributing the created configuration files. We may use the serial number of the device, and it provides almost zero touch provisioning of the configuration files to the devices. Creating the configuration file from the template seems to be manual, i.e enter the ip addresses of the interfaces, the routing tables one by one for each device. How can we use velocity template for device configs?
    2) Ciscoworks LMS Prime: It is possible to create a baseline template for the devices, and after getting the backup configuration of the routers, it is possible to compare the actual configuration of the device with the baseline template, and understand if there is any difference with each other. This is indeed very useful in order to keep the configuration standardized, we again could not find a way to create bulk configuration files from the baseline template.
    3)  Solarwinds Config Generator: This tool is useful for creating a configuration file from a template, but again not for automatically creating configuration files, and needs manual intervention.
    4) Excel Macro: It seems that some people have achived to automatically create configuration files with using an excel macro, but we could not find a procedure or tip of how to achieving this.
    5) Pearl or TCL/TK Script: Again since we are not software developers but from networking field, it is difficult to achieve a working form of this scripts or codes due to to lack of documentation and development experience.
    So our problem comes down to creating a template from a sample configuration, and creating bulk configuration files from the template. Is there a specific tool or procedure to achive this purpose?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Best Regards,

  • Attaching USB Drive - Can't read AP configuration file, kills internet

    Current network:
    Airport Extreme (Sim Dual-Band)
    Mac Pro (wired Ethernet)
    MacBook Pro (wired or WiFi N)
    MacBook (WiFi N)
    2 x iPhones (WiFi G)
    Airport Extreme in use for several months with no problems. All Macs can read/write it's configuration.
    I hooked up a 1TB My Book USB HD to the Airport Extreme via USB. All three Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook) could see and read/write to the new drive. The Airport Extreme appeared in Airport Utility on all three Macs. Wired, WiFi N + G internet continued to work great... however none of the Macs could read the configuration file of the Airport Extreme. If I unplugged the USB drive all the Macs could read and write to the configuration file.
    I plugged the USB drive back in and left it overnight. This morning, everything continued to work, with the exception that none of the computers could read the configuration of the AP.
    Around 10am today the Macs/iPhones could no longer connect to the internet. I disconnected the USB drive and now the internet works again.
