Network permissions for WTK on linux

I have been testing my midp application using the sun wtk and eclipse for linux(ubuntu feisty - java-6-sun).
My problem is that when i launch the debug emulator from eclipse it fails to send any datagram traffic. The application sends the data but the data never gets to the server. If i launch the WTK seperatly as root however the packets do get through. Any ideas? Is there some permission which I should be setting in a configuration file or on the device files?
Thank you

Wireless Configurations
What wireless modes are you using?
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK [/url] only or Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use http://www.metageek.net/support/metageek-software-archives/ to find out. How many?
Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Permissions for Linux user accessing Leopard share

We have a very simple networking setup at our video post production facility. Basically, files are shared everywhere and to everyone. No open directory or DNS serving. Just AFP and SMB.
Our Linux based Smoke/Flame/Lustre system needs access to the files severed/shared by an Xserve with a big attached RAID. It has no problem connecting or seeing the files. However, it typically is denied write permissions. When the Smoke operator creates a folder on the share he can't access the folder until I grant the Others/Everyone group read and write perms. The Linux user logs in with the same user account that everyone else uses.
Some time ago, the always smashing Gerrit DeWitt gave me some terminal commands to set ACLs for users/groups of this shared RAID. They work beautifully and I have had no permissions issues since applying them. Except for this Linux system.
Would it be good practice to use this command to set the Everyone group permissions for this share?
    sudo chmod -R +ai "group:everyone allow readattr,readextattr,readsecurity,\
    list,search,read,execute,writeattr,writeextattr,delete,\
    append,write,deletechild,add_file,addsubdirectory,\
    fileinherit,directoryinherit" "/Volumes/RAIDH/Smoke_InfernoStorage"
Also, is there some configuration change I could make to the Linux system to make it a little more Mac compatible in this area?
    Thanks

It's worth checking into - let us know what you find. What you describe certainly sounds like a problem with permission propagation settings for SMB / Samba since the AFP side works fine.
I've seen other posts about problems that crop up because of differences in the versions of Samba employed between systems, so that's a possibility as well. And I'd have no suggestions for you in that regard other than some searching of the web for clues as to how to work with that issue.

  • Users and permissions for a small home server

    Hello community,
I have been using Linux on the desktop for many years now, but unfortunately my knowledge about servers is very limited, almost non-existent. Therefore my question is most probably equally well fitting here and into the newbie corner.
I'm trying to set up a little home server which should be in charge of following tasks:
    - CUPS print server in the local network
    - access to shared files through NFS in the local network
    - backup (again over NFS)
    - an Owncloud server
    - maybe a mail server in the long run (NSA, paranoia, etc. )
For now I have set up the print server, the NFS server and was working on the Owncloud installation, when Owncloud gave me some errors with users and permissions. So I was led to the idea of rethinking the users and permissions on server. So far there is only the root user who may do everything. This seems like a quite unsafe configuration. I'd like to make it safer. First, the printer, the backup and the locally shared files should be accessible from the local network only. SSH access should also be accessible locally only. The Owncloud file folder should be accessible from the internet, but of course only for the Owncloud users registered to the Owncloud server.
What is the best way to set up users and permissions for such a set up?
    Thanks for any hints,
    PhotonX

Hi, i think it depends who are you serving for, if you are just serving for a small office or home server or a big organization. The following quick thinking just came to me:
I think cups set automatically a system  user of its own, and runs as it, so no trouble there. Cups also has the option to set users and it uses the system users as default, i think it depends in in how many printers/users your have in your server.Users that can manage cups are in the lp group.
For nfs every user should have their home, samba is also a good option if you have  windows computer in your network and it integrates better with graphical file  managers like nautilus in the clients side, but it is a hassle to configure.
You should run the web server (owncloud ) as it own user, maybe you can manage to set something up for owncloud in the filesystem, but owncloud uses a database, and the users for owncloud are stored in there, and they are not system users.
You can configure ssh for local use only enabling the corresponding subnets in your /etc/sshd.conf and optionally but recommended you can set a firewall and permissions. You can use iptables but i prefer ufw for simple setup.
I think you should read the wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/users_and_groups
and the other respective topics in the wiki.
Also as an advice i know that arch linux is a great distribution, but you have to do more work to mantain a stable server. I would recommend debian or another more conservative distro, but of course it is your choice.

  • Need insight for setting up permissions for sharing an external hd via OS X 10.6?

    Hello intelligent lifeforms,
My supervisor and friend passed away a little over a year ago, and I am now trying to fill his shoes as the networking guru and could use some assistance.  I'm trying to share an external hard drive that is connected to my Mac Pro OS X 10.6 workstation with a Mac Pro OS X 10.4 workstation user.  I've tried setting up a Sharing Only account in my System Preferences-Accounts for the 10.4 user, and under System Preference-Sharing I turned File Sharing: On, added the Shared Folder, added the User and set priveleges as "Read Only."  My intentions are for the 10.4 user to only be able to copy files from the external hard drive so as to protect the archived files being stored there from being tampered with.  However, there is a User group listed as "Everyone" that I can't remove and believe it is taking precedence over the 10.4 account that I setup.  I do not know where this Everyone group originated from but believe it to be some kind of default group and a major obstacle.
When the 10.4 user copies a folder from the external hd to his workstation and later copies it to a volume on our Xserve OS X 10.2 the folder shows that I do not have privileges to do anything to the folder (there is a red circle with a minus sign in it on the folder icon).  Eventually, I am to backup these files to the external hd where lies my dilemma.
The volume on the Xserve being copied to is setup under Workgroup Manger-Sharing-Share Points-General:  "Share this item and its contents" IS checked, Owner: admin-Read & Write, Group: staff-Read & Write (where said user has been added to the staff group), Everyone: none (I do not think the Everyone group listed on the server has anything to do with the Everyone group on my machine?), Enable disk quotas on this volume is NOT checked.
My tests show that the permissions are being carried over from the external hd Everyone group (Read Only) because even when the 10.4 user's permissions are set to Read & Write in System Preferences-Sharing-File Sharing-Users the folder still shows to be Read Only when it's copied.  I've even tried setting his Desktop privileges to Read & Write hoping that when he copies the folder the permissions would be overwritten.  Unfortunately, the only way to give me priveleges is for the 10.4 user to change them manually through Get Info from his workstation.  This is counterproductive to the workflow I'm trying to establish.  I've tried wrapping my brain around the flowchart of coordinating permissions/privileges between the different machines but to no success.
Also, a note to add is I've observed a User: Firebird Database that is listed under System Preferences-Sharing on both of our workstations.  It cannot be removed either and I do not know where it is originating from.
Is there anyone out there that has any insight to this situation?
    Perplexed,

    "Everyone" is not a Group.
Every file has underlying Access settings for System, Owner, Group, and World.
Access settings for Everyone mean everyone-else that is not explicitly mentioned in the other settings. It is the same as the Unix "World".
If you set the Priviledges for a file to Everyone=Read, then any user with any credentials can read it.
The User Categories Owner, Group, and Everyone
You can assign standard POSIX access permissions separately to three categories of users:
Owner—A user who creates a new item (file or folder) on the file server is its owner and automatically has Read & Write permissions for that folder. By default, the owner of an item and the server administrator are the only users who can change its access privileges (allow a group or everyone to use the item). The administrator can also transfer ownership of the shared item to another user.
Note: When you copy an item to a drop box on an Apple file server, ownership of the item doesn’t change, but only the owner of the drop box or root has access to its contents.
Group—You can put users who need the same access to files and folders into group accounts. Only one group can be assigned access permissions to a shared item. For more information on creating groups, see the user management guide.
Everyone—Everyone is any user who can log in to the file server: registered users and guests. Hierarchy of Permissions
If a user is included in more than one category of users, each of which has different permissions, these rules apply:
    • GrouppermissionsoverrideEveryonepermissions.
    • OwnerpermissionsoverrideGrouppermissions.
For example, when a user is both the owner of a shared item and a member of the group assigned to it, the user has the permissions assigned to the owner.

  • How to check whether a file got read permissions for perticular user

Problem: Let JRE is running with some x as effective user in LINUX then while checking file permission it is checking permission on that file for that x user.
    File f = new File(file name)
    if(f.exists())
         System.out.println(exists);
    Else
         System.out.println(does not exists);
The above code prints exists only when x user have permissions on that file
Requirement: I would like to check whether a file got read permissions for particular user i.e. whether y user got permissions on that file.
    Any help is appreciated

In Linux a user has to have read permission on a file to even see that it exists. As a result, if a user (or a group to which they belong) doesn't have read access to the file File.exists() will return false. Windows which doesn't have as tightly controlled access to files will admit that a file exists whether it can be read or not.
    PS.
This is proof that I should never answer a question off the top of my head when I haven't had my red bull yet. This is wrong. You will be able to see it if you have read and execute on the directory.

Is there a way to save this situation?
All other services like web and afp works fine,
just not pop, imap and SMTP.
How do I fix permissions back=
Thanx for listening, grateful for any help!

Thanx ever so much you are very kind...

  • Oracle White Paper- Storage Option for RAC. on Linux

    hi..
This in reference with White Paper.. Stotage Option for RAC on LINUX. Author- Umadevi Byrappa.
Which states on page 10: To Use NAS for RAC database file storage select the file system storage option in OUI. or the Clustered file system storage option in DBCA.
With which i disagree. File storage option of oracle 10g RAC only shows.
    1. Clustered File system.
    2. ASM
    3. Raw Devices.
When i try to select Cfs and select the shared directory on NFS it says. < Directory_Name> is not a clustered file system or Shared on Both <Server_1> < Server_2>. and at this point of time i m stuck.
    1. I dont want to use OCFS as its not supporting NAS.
    2. Selecting CFS doesnt recognise mounted shared volume as valid storage device option can only store OCRfile and CSS file.
    3. So, I have to use ASM.. with zero padded files..which i dont want to because no other option. ( PART NO. B10766-02 PAGE C-6)
Also, I would like oracle to provide Back up Recovery Option or Document which tells me how could i Recover Database when i use Zero Padded Files.
What would be the best Option in the above scenario ?
I hope by applying patch or with workaround somehow it shows Filesystem ONLY.I'll be the happiest man in this Case.
Any suggestions and corrections are most welcome. I wish i m wrong.

NFS isn't a clustered file system at all - by RFC it is an exported file system with access controls
If your vendor offers an NFS solution over and beyond that - more power to them. However that isn't "NFS"..
    http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3010.html
You can use NFS in a clustered server environment (to mount apps, read only data and for synchronous access to files), however it doesn't support the concurrency out of the box for RDBMS transactions - if a vendor is supporting this promise then that is for you to decide.
However i stand by my statement that NFS is a file system exported across your network and not a full clustered file system.

  • How to set permissions for files created by Windows on OS 10.8 volume

I am in process of upgrading from an iMac with OS 10.6 to an iMac with OS 10.8.  In my office network, I store all files on my iMac and let the Windows PCs act as workstations to read/write onto the Mac.  (It's simpler to have all files centralized in one location, and only have to be concerned about backing up one volume.)
When I had OS 10.4 and OS 10.6 any newly created file saved by the Windows PCs onto the Mac could be opened by the Mac.
But with OS 10.8, I can not open newly created files from Windows.  The file permissions for the newly created files from the Windows PCs are:
         PCUser = read/write;  Everyone = no access.
What do I need to do so that newly created files from the Windows PC (currently Windows 7) can be opened by the Mac, without having to use Get Info to reset the permissions each time?

You could try adding this Access Control Entry (ACE) to the folders you let them save to:
    sudo chmod -R +a "accountinggroup allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Path/to/topmost/folder
You first need to create a group for all the sharing people you want to have access to that folder, if you don't already have one. In the example, "accountinggroup" is the group, so change that to whatever you want to use.
The ACE allows them full access to the files in the folders. If you want to limit that, remove the option (such as delete).
You create Groups in Users & Groups System Preference just like creating a new user. Just change the account type to Group.
If you want a GUI to do the settings, try Sandbox.  It's got a few glitches in the Interface, but it seems to write the ACL correctly. One glitch is selecting the Group or User. I had just a list of Continuing in the popup menu. I typed in the Group name I wanted and it worked. Some errors pop up as you traverse the file hierarchy, but you can dismiss them.
Here is an old hint, which gives a little background, and some other options: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090219133314985
The Server tools would allow you to set this up more easily, but if this is all you need as the server, I don't know if it is worth it.

  • How to Network setup for Lazerjet 6P

I  have a lazerjet 6P set up in a PC network and it is shared.  I can see it from the Mac air but it won't print.  What am I missing ? Please step by step as I am somewhat new to MAC ( It is a transition but well worth it !!!!)
    Thanks

What you can try is enabling Windows SMB sharing on the Mac. On the Mac Log into your Windows computer to view something that is shared on the Windows PC, like a hard drive or even just a folder.
Make sure the Windows firewall is turned off (If you are bhind a router you don't need it turn on).
What version of Windows is running on the PC? Win 7, XP, Vista??? Do you have passwords set on the Windows PC?
But in the end I have never gotten my Mac to print to any printer connected directly to a Windows computer. No matter what I try. No matter what permissions I have set on both system. No matter how I connect to the Windows PC over the local network. For me it has never worked and I'm fairly skilled in networking.

  • Mac Mini Sever - Public Share - how enable read and write permissions for new remote files

    Hi,
this Sunday a friend ask me to help hum with a problem on is Man Mini Server. He has a small office and uses the mini server to share a public folder to all his employees.
Everyone that creates a file, saves it to the public folder at the mini mac.
That problem is that, who creates the file owns it and remains with read-only permissions to everyone else. The owner has to change the file permission in order to the rest of the employees can work on it.
I do not know mac arquitecture, I only work with windows and linux, but i suspect the principles are the same.
We try to create another folder , and share it, but it happens the same. Have you any ideas on what is wrong?
I suspect it has anything to do with de file Sharing at the mini mac, but it has read and write permissions for everyone.
    Thanks for your help.

signed applet. You aren't going to find any easy way to distribute that policy file to users, and that policy file, if you asked me to put it on my PC, I'd tell you to take a flying leap. That would open any applet to access.

  • How to fix 10.4.6 network permissions problems

Here is how to fix it problems with 10.4.6 and network permissions. It isn't a permission problem, per se, but rather the fact that 10.4.6's network permissions improvements also cause it to respect the Locked file flag. You could manually unlock files and folders, but for most people that is impractical. It will be much faster if you run this from the server (find/install the appropriate version of the developer tools - Tiger version of Xcode will not run on Panther - on a client machine and copy /Developer/Tools/SetFile on to the server). Also, I would try the first one first and only do the second if you are still having trouble.
For changing directories, run this from the command line, filling in the path to your network volume (any spaces will require you to enclose the path in quotes):
    find [path to network volume] -type d -exec /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a l {} ';'
    For example,
    find "/Volumes/Network Share" -type d -exec /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a l {} ';'
If you are having trouble with files as well, execute:
    find [path to network volume] -exec /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a l {} ';'
    Cheers,
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
I want to ask you do I run
find "Volumes/Network Share" -type d -exec
    /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a | {} ';'
everytime I login the the network volumn? Then next time when I login to the network server, the server will not be locked. Or I have to run this everytime?
    Thanks,
    Eleanor

  • Why have 2 network adapters for RAC

    Hello Guys,
We are in process of installing Database 10g RAC R2 on windows platform. The network requirements of RAC incluides at least 2 network adapters for public interface and private interface. Our database will be accessed within the Private Network only, no public access. Even then i have to install 2 network adaptors?
One of the screen during installation of clusterware dont allow you move forward... without giving the private, public and virtual names of the node... is there any way to skip it?
Another question is how can we assign virtual IP addresses?
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Imran

    > Is there any way that skip private network
No. Nor should you want to.
However. You can use a single physical ethernet device though, by creating multiple protocol stacks (logical interfaces) on it.
On the Linux side, this is as simple as configuring an eth0:1 - not sure how the Windows XP/Vista world these days deal with it.. but it was possible back in Win95.
That said.. it is still not the best of ideas. A high-speed and dedicated InterConnect is a critical part of the performance puzzle.
Also, as the InterConnect is very noisy, how do you deal with that hitting the switches/hubs/routers and the rest of that LAN segment when you run it over the same ethernet wires as your public network?
RAC itself is not a "cheap" nor "simple" option. So I'm a bit surprised that you would want to somehow save cost and/or reduce complexity by not using a dedicated second interface for running the InterConnect of the cluster over a private network.
It does not IMO make any sense.

  • Correct permissions for user home folders?

I recently installed a new Mac Mini with Server 10.10.2
I have about 10 clients running off the server (an open directory master), they are setup as local network users and have home folders on the server.
I had to copy contents of the home folders from a previous (crashed) server and I can't seem to get the permissions right.
A couple of the users use home directory syncing, so they have a local copy of their home folder on the computer they usually use, but changes aren't getting synced across the network to the server. An example is the dock, I keep removing and replacing icons in the dock, but logging out and logging back in returns the dock to its old configuration (presumably bringing the old config back from the server).
Is there a tool which resets user directory permissions for network home folders? Or can someone give me any guidance how to sort this out?
    Thanks
    James

In the sidebar of the Server.app window, select the icon at the top with the name of the server. Then select the Storage tab in the main window pane.
Navigate to the folder in question and select it. From the popup menu at the bottom with a gear icon, select
              Edit Permissions...
Verify that the permissions are what they should be, and make changes if necessary. Then, from the same menu, select
              Propagate Permissions...
Check all applicable boxes, including Access Control List. If in doubt, check all boxes. Click OK.

  • Small Office Network Solution for Final Cut Server - Proxy Storage Etc.

    Hi,
I haven't been able to find any answers for this question by googling, So I would love if anyone here had some advice. I have the 10 License version of Final Cut Studio with 5 clients at the moment. I would like to set-up our office in the most effective way, however we are a non-profit organization, so we are working with a limited budget.
My question is, does anyone know of any networking solutions for Proxy Storage and Media storage, that wont bottleneck, but is not as high budget/high tech as using an Xserve/XSan system?
Right now we would be looking at running Final Cut Server off of our 24inch Intel IMac (Going to beef up the RAM). We have a Gigabit Switch, 4 more intel machines running final Cut pro, and a direct attached Drobo for Media Storage. I know this is not an Ideal set-up, but it's what I have to work with right now. So, I'm looking for any kinds of tips and tricks to make this set-up work for us, and am looking at purchasing either a Network Attached or iscsI storage system for the Proxy Storage.
I hope this is a decent description of my situation, and would love some advice.
    Thanks Very Much,

  • Unique permissions for Toplevel teamsite and NewForm.aspx?

Perhapse I dont know how to seach for this but I cant manage to find anything in the forums here that addreses this specifically.  If I am in error concerning that PLEASE point me in the right direction, otherwise this is my issue:
I have created a form based on a list I have created for capturing "engagements" (new task requests for a team within my department).  The goal of this form is to help us make record of (and track) tasks from other departments we get
in hallway conversations, emails or IM clients.  A way for us to say "yeah sure we can help you with that...but please go here and file a request so I have something to log my time aginst."  We call that request an "Engagement"
so my list is an "Engagement Request" list and it lives on our Sharepoint 2010 Team site.  *Yes I am aware there are a plethora of ticketing systems out there that might be able to better facilitate this but that isnt an option for us and I
am the poor sod tasked with making it happen  using Sharepoint.
What I am trying to do is set the permissions for the NewForm.aspx associated with this list so that anyone with a AD account can access it to create a new item (an "engagement request") but lock down access to the rest of the site..including
the list (because one person who is engageing us for a password rest has no business seeing the record/status of our other engagments.  At this point I have figured out how to route the users (who have previously requested and been granted access
to the site) from the Enagement form BACK to the the main menu so they dont automatically see the list.  Basically I added an image top the Top level team site that says "Engagment", linked it directly to the NewForm.aspx URL and
appended it with the "?source=https//" bit at the end which will re-direct the user back to the Toplevel site on save/submit rather than the Allitems display of the list they just added a new item (Engagment) to.
Ok now that I have explained all that...and I apologize for the overly verbose nature of this post but what I need to do is set it so that anyone with a valid AD account can access the top level site of the teamsite...and Add a new item to the engament list...
but that is all, nothing else.  I cant allow them to go into the other lists and libraries on the teamsite.  My research indicates that I can set unique permissions on things all the way down to files but I cant seem to wrap my mind around how to
grant automatic access to the toplevel site (and the NewForm.aspx) but NOT everything else.
I have been assigned as one of the owners of said site so I should have the required permissions to do this. Im just not sure HOW to do this.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    ~Confused SharePoint Teamsite owner

    Daniel,
Thank YOU for taking the time to reply!
Unfortunately I do not have the Enterprise version of SharePoint 2010 (and therefore no access to InfoPath form services) so I was forced to configure the permissions for the list using the browser interface.  As you suggested I configured the permissions
for the top-level site  in the collection as such so that anyone within the ADS\Domain users group was part of a custom "Name of My Department Visitors" group (separate from the default SharePoint "Visitors" group).
I then managed the permissions on that group to have "Contribute" access.  After this I made EVERYTHING under The Main Page unique secured.
I then went into the actual list that tracks the "engagements" and went to the List settings (via the ribbon) / Advanced Settings (under the General Settings heading) and set the "Create and Edit access:" option to "Create items
and edit items that were created by the user".
Using this setup I was able to log into the site using my test user account (which is part of the ADS\Domain users group) then access the "Engagement" New Item list and create an entry.  From here my re-direct dumped me back to the main page.
When I browse manually to that engagements listing I can now see (and Edit) the item I created (using my test user account) but NONE of the other items in the list.
