Network slow in one direction

Hi,
I have a strange problem. The network is slow in one direction, between a Solaris 10 box and a few Linux/Windows boxes.
Here is test result with iperf:
bash-3.00# ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_cwnd_max 1048576
bash-3.00# /Desktop/iperf-2.0.3/src/iperf -c slave014 -d
Server listening on TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 48.0 KByte (default)
Client connecting to slave014, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 48.0 KByte (default)
[  5] local 192.168.128.175 port 40811 connected with 192.168.128.214 port 5001
[  6] local 192.168.128.175 port 5001 connected with 192.168.128.214 port 37143
[  6] 0.0-10.1 sec 900 MBytes 751 Mbits/sec
[  5] 0.0-10.2 sec 4.66 MBytes 3.85 Mbits/sec
The speed between the linux/window hosts are OK. They are all connected to a unmanaged GB switch.
It does not look like duplex problem:
bash-3.00# dladm show-link
e1000g0 type: non-vlan mtu: 1500 device: e1000g0
e1000g1 type: non-vlan mtu: 1500 device: e1000g1
aggr1 type: non-vlan mtu: 1500 aggregation: key 1
bash-3.00# dladm show-dev
e1000g0 link: up speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full
e1000g1 link: up speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full
I've tried different tcp_xmit_hiwat tcp_recv_hiwat tcp_max_buf tcp_cwnd_max settings but it does not appear to help.
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I'm talking about either basic ethernet or a wifi connection. Basic ethernet has the same speed in either direction ie 'downstream' or 'upstream'. I don't know the specifics of wifi but I'm pretty sure it too has identical speeds in either direction.
I only have an ssh server on my linux machine so I'm always running the copy from the mac. To summarize:
$ scp file1 linux:/tmp -> 2.2Mb/s
$ scp linux:/tmp/file1 . -> 100Kb/s
I know that apple wifi cards sometimes have problems with linksys routers, but even with a normal ethernet connection the speeds are the same.

  • GRE slow in one direction

    Hi folks
I need some help understanding a problem I have. I have to networks connected over GRE using Cisco 1921 routers. One router is connected to the Internet and the other one to a 4G provider. 4G as I know it should be slower on the upload than on the download but for my users at the remote site it's the opposite. I get speeds around 4mbit down and 12mbit up. If I send the remote site straight out to Internet and skip the tunnel I get speeds around 10mbit down and 5mbit up.
I've been trying some MTU and MSS settings but none has given any clear improvements. Anyone got an idea?
    Regards
    Fredrik

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

  • Extending Airport Extreme Network Slows Network Dramatically

Hello, after I extended my airport network I experienced dramatically reduced network speeds. Here is my configuration:
ISP is cable modem with very decent speeds.
Base Station is Airport Extreme (802.11n capable) / with gigabit ethernet (in garage)
Secondary router is Time Capsule 802.11n WiFi hard drive (also gigabit ethernet capable (on my desk at other end of the house).
What works OK is connecting base station to secondary router using ethernet, base station with wireless enabled, but secondary router (Time Capsule) with wireless set to Off. I have the latest versions of Airport Utility and firmware installed everywhere.
"Ain't broke, don't fix it" you may say, BUT I did want to extend the range of the wireless network. So I followed the steps to extend an 802.11n wireless network:
    ( - Base Station: Create Network / Allow network to be extended;
    - Remote Station: Extend Network, selecting my network, allow wireless clients)
Everything seemed to complete successfully; two green lights glow in Airport Utility and one on each device. However, the network slowed to a crawl. It was so bad that I had to back out the changes and revert to my initial configuration. The extended range of my wireless network was just not worth the terrible performance penalty.
The network slowdown seems to be experienced by all clients, including another Mac which is connected via Ethernet to the Gigabit Base Station (not to the Time Capsule - directly to the base station). So this suggests that the extension to the wireless network slowed down the whole network. (Btw, it's not just internet connections that were affected. I tried connecting between the Macs using the Finder and it was painfully slow - taking roughly a minute to connect.) To me it seems that something must be very wrong, I just don't know what!
    So my questions:
    1. I had hoped that the gigabit connection between the routers (which seems to work fine when only the base station supports wireless clients) would continue to work when the Time Capsule is used to extend the wireless network. Is this true, or in this mode does it switch to operating as a wireless client itself? (If so, this might partly explain why my office Mac slows down so much; it would now be connecting to the cable modem via wireless, not gigabit.
    2. I'm guessing, (but I haven't tried it yet), that I might be able to achieve almost what I want to do by creating a different network using Time Capsule. Does anyone have any experience doing this? If so, what suggestions do you have?
    Thanks, Patrick

Patrick... I had the same problem althjough not quite as complex I believe... see this thread... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2111176&tstart=0
I changed my base to 'n' at 5ghz and saw a marked improvement. Hope this helps.

  • Can't synch calendar appts with outlook 2007 but only in one direction?

i have the verizon iphone and aside from this one MAJOR glitch, i'm loving the phone. no dropped calls, and well, i had a palm centro, so this is a major upgrade in every way except for this one MAJOR glitch...
i'm synching my iphone with my work pc and using outlook 2007 on my company's exchange server. i first synched an ipad last month and now this iphone to my laptop and exchange and i'm having the problem with both actually.
i can add an appointment on my laptop and it pushes to my calendar on my iphone and ipad. BUT if i add an appointment on my iphone or ipad, it doesn't update to my calendar on my laptop. this is very strange!! i can see the added appointment from either one of the idevices on the other, BUT it never pushes to my laptop calendar. however, at the time i add the event, i'm looking at my laptop calendar and in the lower right corner where the exchange status bar is, i can see it quickly switch to say "waiting to update folders" and then it goes back to "all folders are up to date." so it appears that the devices and laptop outlook are communicating in some capacity, but the appointment doesn't make it to it's final destination on the calendar.
it gets even more strange. if i even EDIT an existing event from either one of my idevices, it will ERASE the event on my laptop calendar. to be clear, i don't know if this problem began with the initial intro of the ipad last month as i had never used it to edit calendars and only discovered it when i decided to test all scenarios.
so basically my i devices are communicating and pushing updates between each other, but my laptop updates are only pushing in one direction. if i do anything from either idevice it either doesn't push or it ERASES IT??!!
this is a major problem, but what i'm not certain of is where the origin is. is it iphone related, pc related, exchange related, software, firmware, hardware?
oh and otherwise everything else pushes fine in both directions with outlook exchange: contacts, email, even notes (although iphone notes are useless)
sorry for the lengthy explanation, but i am just stumped.
thanks in advance for any help!! if no luck, guess i'll have to try bellying up to the genius bar...

Found the problem. The iMac G5 that I couldn't connect to (but could connect from) was actually connected to another company's wireless network that is on our floor. After switching back to our network all problems were resolved. A relief...

  • Transfer Network settings from one machine to another?

I'd like to transfer my Network locations on my old PowerBook running Panther to my new one that's running Tiger. What files would I have to move over? Is there an easier way to export these settings and import them into the new machine?

You can use the Migration Assistant to bring over network settings from one Mac OS X installation to another. The transfer can be done through FireWire or from another drive connected directly to the computer.

  • Infrequently, calls will not have audio in one direction.

We're using OCS 2007 R2 with a Dialogic DMG2000 series gateway and Tanjay phones.  Occasionally, I have a user who might complain that an outbound call doesn't have audio in one direction or the other.  This happens once every few days.  I don't see errors anywhere and the Dialogic reports that there are no call issues.  The problem will clear up quickly and appears at random.  We still have the old PBX up, which also flows through the same Dialogic and does not experience the issue so I believe it's buried in OCS somewhere.
How can I being troubleshooting an issue like this?  Can someone point me in a direction?  I want my users to have as much confidence in this solution as possible.

One way audio issues have a few common root causes to check for:
    1) Communicator users can sometimes mute speakers or mic on their PC without realizing it. Also If they have multiple audio devices attached then check they one they think they are using is really the one selected. Some devices also have local
mute buttons that get selected without the user realizing it.
    2) Faulty devices can cause one way audio. Switch the device for one you know that works to test this or try using Sound Recorder to record a raw audio file and then play it back.
    3) PSTN gateway configuration issues. This is a tougher one to troubleshoot, but if only OCS-PSTN calls are experiencing one way audio and it happens to many different users this is a likely cause. Check the codec configuration of GW means codec choices
with the Mediation Server match, i.e. G.711 u-law or G.711 a-law are preferred on both sides. Other configuration issues are vendor specific and so you may need their help verifying the Gateway is properly setup.
    4) Less commonly network issues can cause one-way audio if there are serious routing or packet loss problems in one direction. You can look for signs of this in the QoE Server report of an affected call. The "PacketUtilization" metric records the packet
count for an audio stream. (You can find details of what indiviudal QoE metrics mean here -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd819959(office.13).aspx). If further network troubleshooting is necessary you can try pings to see if network path is functioning and/or
collect network sniffs during an affected call.
There is a useful guide available to troubleshooting OCS VoIP issues here:

    Hi,
You should have the L2L VPN ACLs as mirror images of eachtother always. In your above configuration they werent. I am not sure if this is something that should break the L2L VPN connection in the way you mention but certainly configuring the connection like this is not recomended.
Also notice that the "permit ip" statement already includes "icmp" so there is really no need to add an additional line to the ACL.
I would recomend defining the needed networks to the L2L VPN ACL with the "permit ip" statements and using other methods to control the traffic through those L2L VPN connections IF needed.

  • JSplitPane (only allow collapse in one direction)

Is there a way to allow the JSplitPane to only collapse in one direction. For instance my application use a JSplitPane and it should only be able to collapse to the left (hence I need to remove or disable the little arrow that points to the 'right' since that would screw things up). Any ideas?

    Hi Pam,
Check the settings on the Vista 64-Bit Laptop, in Network and Sharing Center. Make sure that when you upgraded Vista, that the settings did not changed from Public.
Also, make sure that the folders being shared are existing only on the Internal Hard Drive and not on any External Hard Drives, plugged into the computer via an USB Cable.

  • Network slow after 10.4.5 update

Hi there, after installing the 10.4.5 update my PowerBook 12" is really slow when accessing network services. Web, Mail are impossibly slow.
I have a cable modem broadband connection with a Belkin wireless router sharing the connection. The laptop connects via Airport and uses DHCP for autoconfiguration.
I have tried the fix suggested on MacFixit of putting the DNS manually in the TCP/IP settings. Also I have turned off IPv6 which was also suggested to no avail.
My other laptops with earlier system revisions are running fine (I am using one to write this) and I have tried the Mac on another network with the same effect so it has to be something that 10.4.5 has done to my poor alubook
    Can anyone help please.

Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#9): Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater; SIIG FireWire card not working; more
Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater Over the past few days we've outlined a number of fixes for network slowness that occurs after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5, including entry of a DNS address, toggling of IPv6 and more.
We've now received notes indicating that a tried and true workaround for various issues -- re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater (as noted in our general workarounds for 10.4.5) -- can have beneficial effects in this case as well.
    MacFixIt reader Fred Moore writes:
"After much thrashing about and wasted time, I appear to have solved both the slow web page loading as well as my email sending problems in one stroke. Guess how: download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater and reapply it. This nonsense has cost me a lot of time but everything seems to work now. IPv6 is set back to Automatic, there is no entry in the Network prefs DNS server field, and my email sending works perfectly (so far; I've sent a bunch of tests). Why didn't I just download the combo updater and apply from my hard drive at the beginning? Well, Software Update should (yes, I know, I know...) work. I'll never again use Software Update for a system update."

  • Does a mixed N and G network make the network slower for the N-enabled?

    Hello all,
I was just admiring my Airport Extreme box after registering it, and I noticed this bit of fine print:
"Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network."
Does this mean that my 802.11g printer makes the network slower for my two 802.11n macbooks?

    Okay,
For a follow up: I'm using the "guest" network for all my G-level wireless devices, and the regular network from all my N devices.
Does that overcome the mixed network limitations? It seems like it wouldn't - because the Airport is basically creating two virtual networks out of one network. Or are there two individual networks on the Airport?
    Thanks!

  • Port Disable for traffic flowing only one direction

    Hi,
We use some Catalyst Express 500 and ESW-520 in our company.
But with the Catalyst Express 500 we have problem that we can't arrive to explain.
Some Gi port turn disable with this log error message :
Description: Gi1: This port is disabled because the traffic is flowing only in one direction. The cause might be incorrect cabling.
Recommendation: Make sure that cable is properly connected to the ports. For fiber connections, ensure that the transmit and receive fibers are connected correctly. Disable and Enable the port.
For the recommandation the cable is right, we change it and we change the switch by an other and the probleme continue.
If we change with a ESW-520 the problem don't arrive, but we can't change all our old switch for moment.
    Any idea about this problem?

    Hi Guys,
Thank you all for your help. The packet was being dropped on the "implicit rule", that means that the packet was not finding an ACL to match.
I checked the ACLs that the VPN Wizard generates by itself when used to configure an IPSec connection, and the ACLs where correct and "before" the implicit rule . (They are called by default outside_cryptomap_"number")
It seems that since I am not using "sysopt connection permit-vpn" I have to add the same ACLs to the "Local Network" interface (VPN_LAN).
Since there was inbound ACLs related to the VPN_LAN interface, the firewall jumped directly to the "implicit rule".
So the result is that I have two times the same rules first inbound on the VPN_LAN and second on the default outside_cryptomap ACLs.
    Greetings,
    Daniel

  • Handoff Works Only One Direction

Apple has forced me to change my password to make updates to my account. Every since then, Handoff has stopped working one direction.
Going from OS X (10.10.3) to iOS (8.2 now 8.3) actually works, for both my iPhone and iPad.
However, the other direction isn't working. I've tried disabling and re-enabling handoff on all my device. Neither iOS device is sending or can send to my MBPro. This has also broken my ability to receive SMS texts in my MBPro. As both devices accept Handoff just fine, but neither can seen to hand-off successfully, I'm inclined to think it's my MBPro having the issue. And given it does work one direction, we can rule out Network or connectivity issues.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? What can I do to get this back working again?

Follow the instructions in this support article. All the devices using Handoff must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the Mac also has an Ethernet connection, disconnect the Ethernet cable.
If Handoff still doesn't work, on the mobile device, turn Handoff off and back on as directed in the linked article. On the Mac, turn Bluetooth off and back on. You might have to restart a mobile device to get it working.

  • How to remove a network activity for one employee from the worklist?

    Hi,
We are using the SAP project system where project resources are assigned network activities. In the worklist in the ESS timesheet, the assigned network activities are displayed for the employee. The problem is when several employees are assigned for a network activity, and one of them no longer should register hours on this activity. How can you remove the assignment (using dates etc.) for only one person so that the network activity no longer is present in his worklist in the timesheet?
    Regards,

Well for this pernr you need to have a special coding to check for network and pernr.
other would be a simple way using cats0003 to validate data an employee records here you can have a individual check
for this pernr that he doesnt record for this activity and throw an error when he does! this is simpler
