Networking a java program

I'm interested in creating a java program that will run on a webserver and will be used by 4 different people interactivly, like a card game. I have created java programs before but never for a network environment and never used by more than one person at a time. could anyone point me in the right direction as to what i need to do to create this interactive network program?
thanks

well ur looking at two things. First of all, u need threading for ur program to have the ability to be used simulaneously by more than 1 person. and then u need to learn how to network program I can only suggest some books to learn network programming and I am sure you can find a lot on threading in most java books. Let me know if you wanna know the books, i can't remember the names at this point

  • Running a java program over network

    Hi,
    How a java program on a machine can be run without having JRE on the same machine, rather interpreting bytecode over network having JRE on another machine?

    well, so my java program is running on x. Initialy X had JRE and on invoking java program from command prompt, it had looked for JRE at path, set in environmental settings. Now I moved JRE to another machine Y and connected these two machines (X and Y). You have two machines X and Y.
    "Connected" or not has nothing to do with this discussion.
    In X path is set to the JRE on Y. The path on X has absolutely nothing to do with anything on Y.
    Now execute java program on X, theoretically it should work or what is wrong with this?This makes no sense. Presuming you meant Y in the above then the following must be true.
    1. You must have a JRE on Y.
    2. You must have a java application on Y (or one accessible via the file system on Y.)
    3. You must be on Y and start the JRE passing the java application that is on Y to it.
    Notice in the above there is no mention of X. There can be no mention of X.

    How can java programs execute automatically when it connects to network.What is "it"? That is, execute when what connects to the network?
    Your computer? If that's what you mean, this is not a Java question. It's an OS operational/administrative question. Executing any program, whether written in Java or not, based on some system event has to do with that system, not with the program. If it's possible to do this, you'd do it exactly the same way for a Java program as you would for any other program.
    Or is "it" the program itself? If this is what you mean, then it's a nonsensical question. For the program to connect to the network and detect that it has connected to the network, it must already be executing, so asking how to execute it at that point is meaningless.
    Finally, I'll point out that "connecting to the network" is a pretty meaningless phrase. Or rather, it has so many potentially valid meanings that it's impossible to know which one you're referring to when you use that phrase. And I'd be willing to bet you don't have a clear picture of that yourself.

  • Running a Java Program for every shut down of system

    Hi
    I have a java program that sends an email to the Admin of my network.
    But this is program i just want to execute for every shutdown and on of my system
    Please Tell me how to execute my java program at system shutdown time and on time..
    Thanks

    Despite your objective, this is not a Java issue. The real question is "How does one run a program just before system shutdown?"
    How you execute such an application is system dependent. Java doesn't know when the system shuts down, only when the JVM shuts down. Unless you're willing to have JVM running the entire time the system is up, you'll need native code to detect system shutdown & launch the notification app.

  • How do I establish a connection to another Java program on the net?

    Hi all,
    I have been reading the java tutorial to find a solution to my problem but I havent really found what Im looking for.
    I want to establish a connection that allows a client to get a copy of an object from a running java-application on a server on the internet.
    I have read about the Socket-class but the tutoral advices only to use it on a locale network. I know IDL and RMI only by name - is this what I should be reading about?
    If one of you guys have a source-code example on how to make java programs communicate over the net, please post it!
    Regards Albert

    Assuming this is "wide area" stuff, not just on a local area network, your best bet is to stick to http connections. You need a web server, probably Tomcat.
    Your client can connect using URL.openConnection().
    As to protocols you could use SOAP. It has the advantage that you can get the code for it for free, but it can be pretty complicated to configure. In particular it only knows how to transmit a limited set of object types and if you want to go beyond them you have to write converters. SOAP servers typically run under an web server anyway. SOAP converts all the data to XML for transmission.
    However it may be simpler to use Java's built in serialisation facility and send your data as an ObjectStream.
    In the set up you're talking about the message going to the server seems a lot simpler than the response. It may make sense to send your data as normal keyword parameters of a POST transaction but to have the server respond with an Object stream. That's well within the normal operation of a web server.

      NetworkInterface network = NetworkInterface.getByInetAddress(ip);
      byte[] mac = network.getHardwareAddress();
      /*System.out.print("Current MAC address : ");   */
      StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
      for (int i = 0; i < mac.length; i++)
      sb.append(String.format("%02X%s", mac[i], (i < mac.length - 1) ? "-" : ""));

    Also please let me know about how to connect internet through proxy server.As I said above, if you are using the Apache HTTP client, no we can't, as this is not an Apache forum. I also told you where to find that answer.
    If on the other hand you don't want to use that client any more, setting the system properties http.proxyHost and http.proxyPort will do it for java.net.HttpURLConnection. See the Java Custom Networking tutorial for examples.

  • Call Java program in APEX

    Hi, I am an APEX newbie... I need to call a Java program (.JAR file) from a PL/SQL script inside an APEX application. My question is, does the JAR file need to be in a particular place (and if so, what's the best way to get it there)?
    - somewhere in the APEX database?
    - somewhere in the production database (9i)?
    - could it be called if it resides on a shared network drive?
    Any help would be appreciated... everything I've found thus far tells me to use the loadjava tool to get it onto the prod. database, but I want to make sure that there isn't an easier option as I've had some trouble with that.
    Thanks in advance...
    Kenny

    Hi,
    If you want to call the method of the java class that is stored in the jar you have to make this jar file accessible to the client.
    1/ The jar file can be stored in the database by using loadjava utility
    E.g. loadjava -u scott/tiger -resolve yourjavapackage.jar
    More details on http://www.oracleutilities.com/OSUtil/loadjava.html
    and http://www.csee.umbc.edu/help/oracle8/java.815/a64683/tools1.htm
    1.1/ Once the jar file is in the database you can access it's object methods by defining the pl/sql function that is able to call particular java method
    E.g.
    FUNCTION jCreateDir (dir varchar2, checkExistsOnly number, grantRootDir varchar2)
    RETURN NUMBER as LANGUAGE java
    NAME 'mypkg.Utils.createDirectory(java.lang.String, int, java.lang.String) return int';
    Above function then calls the java method defined in the class included in the jar file (jar file is just an archive of the java classes - to bundle several classes, images... in one file)
    The example contents of the java class
    package mypkg;
    import java.io.File;
    public class Utils {
    public static int createDirectory(String dir, int checkExistsOnly, String grantScriptDir)
    ///some code here
    1.3/ So if you know what method to call, what are the input parameters and return value you can create your calling procedure/function in pl/sql
    I am not very sure if you can load jar files containing the classes that render some user interface items(buttons,panels etc - items from awt or swing package) so basicaly load just the code that performs actions like computation/ xml transformation/ file I/O so anything that does not require GUI items.
    2/ If your jar file contains the objects that display some user interface control or you need to call the java from the javascript then you need to embed your jar file in the html code by using <OBJECT > or <APPLET> tag

  • Java program in XP - Please Help

    Hi, I am not sure if I am in the right fourm. I am not a developer, but a network engineer trying to help out my wife. My wife uses a java program to monitor the company she works for web site, which is not linked to a web browser. When she received the java program, it came with Java 1.2.2. Our PC had Windows 98 installed. I purchased a new machine, with Windows XP on it, and installed the java program and JRE on to it. The program does not work. The programmer who wrote the program was fired a few months ago, so I started looking through the internet, and the Sun fourms for a solution. First, the XP machine does not have Microsoft VM on it. Second, I upgraded the java to 1.4.1_02, following the instructions, still with no success. There was a suggestion to dual boot with Windows 98, but I really do not want to do that. What happens is - when you log in to the program, it just freezes. It does not go into the server. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Possible reasons for the program hanging up
    1) The version of the VM on the machine is not correct.
    2) Even if the version is correct and correctly installed, can you please check whether the PATH and CLASSPATH variables are set correctly on the machine where you are running the program.
    3) I use WINXP as well with the latest version of VM downloaded from Sun and NOT Microsoft.
    Hopefully this might solve the issue.

  • How To Get A Java Program To Initiate Auto Dial in Windows???

    I have a Java program that opens a connection to a server (another Java program) using sockets and streams. On some windows machines (various versions) with auto dial enabled the connection is made without human intervention. However on some windows machines (even same as others) the autodial doesn't work and all I receive is NoRouteToHostExceptions.
    What I need is some way of initiating the autodial from within Java explicilty rather than assuming that the OS will do it when a request is made to a remote IP address.
    I emplore anyone with some knowledge of this to provide assistance as I am going nuts trying to solve this problems.

    A long time ago I figured out how to create, find, and manipulate items in the DialUp Networking using an InstallShield program. I am sorry I can't remember specifics (I wouldn't have even replied except no one else has either...) but I remember that I did a LOT of hunting on Microsoft's website for how to do this on the various platforms of the day (Win95, Win98, NT4.0).
    I imagine that in order to accomplish this from java, you will probably need to find the system-specific commands (at Microsoft) and exec them from your java program.

  • Java program - over the net arguments

    Hi Friends,
    I have a java program that accepts inputs as agruments and produces a result file eg:
    java MyProgram input1.wav input2.wav output.wavThe program works fine if the input files are on local computer but i want the input files to come over the internet eg:
    java MyProgram http://www.xyz.com/input1.wav http://www.xyz.com/input2.wav http://www.xyz.com/output.wavCan someone please tell me how to do this. I tried to make a servlet that calls this java program but it didn't worked...
    Please give me some ideas as to how to implement this..
    Thanks

    I would like to make an API, so that when the program
    gets the parameters,it automatically downloads and
    processes them and then provides the output file??
    Do,I need to establish a HTTP connection to that
    server first from which I need to access the files???Have a look at Sun's lesson: Working with URLs:
