New 11gR2 DB Startup Problem In Finding pfile

I created a new 11gR2 database yesterday. First I installed the grid infrastructure and chose the followed the instructions for "Installing and Configuring Grid Infrastructure For a Standalone Server". The ASM DATA disk group was successfully created.  Then I successfully used the asmca tool to add a FRA disk group.
Here' s the current crs status, with me logged in as user "grid":
-bash-3.00$ crs_stat -t -v
Name Type R/RA F/FT Target State Host
ora.DATA.dg ora....up.type 0/5 0/ ONLINE ONLINE hostsrv1
ora.FRA.dg ora....up.type 0/5 0/ ONLINE ONLINE hostsrv1
ora....ER.lsnr ora....er.type 0/5 0/ ONLINE ONLINE hostsrv1
ora.asm ora.asm.type 0/5 0/ ONLINE ONLINE hostsrv1
ora.cssd ora.cssd.type 0/5 0/5 ONLINE ONLINE hostsrv1
ora.diskmon ora....on.type 0/10 0/5 ONLINE ONLINE hostsrv1
Looks good.
Then I try to bring up the database that successfully created last night. I log in as user "oracle" and try to bring the DB up:
ORACLE_SID=hostsrv1
ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db
-bash-3.00$ sqlplus / as sysdba
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.1.0 Production on Wed May 12 11:06:43 2010
Copyright (c) 1982, 2009, Oracle. All rights reserved.
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup;
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db/dbs/inithostsrv1.ora'
SQL>
It's true, the pfile is missing from that directory. If I understand correctly (new to R2) it should be there and be pointing to an spfile in the +DATA diskgroup.  Does that sound right?  I guess I should try to create a pfile that points to the location of the spfile but I need to know how to obtain that information (location of spfile) from the ASM instance.
Thanks for any help :-)

If you are sure you spfile should be in ASM diskgroup, then you can use utility asmcmd for connecting to this ASM instance, and later by browsing ASM catalog structure you can find the location of your spfile.

  • Startup problems -- not finding hard disk

    I have a g5 iMac that is several years old (pre-Intel). This morning, my husband went to use it. He said there was some iDisk synching error (I've been getting those on my MacBook Pro, too) and then the cursor turned into the rainbow and he rebooted. Upon rebooting, the question mark folder started flashing and the computer wouldn't boot up. It's definitely having a problem finding the hard disk. I've started it up with the Tiger Install DVD but when I get to Disk Utility, the only thing that shows up in the lefthand column is the DVD drive with the Install DVD Is my hard drive fried? Of course it's never been backed up. Is there anything I can do from home or do I need to lug it into the Apple Store? Please help!!!
    TIA,

    Here's Apple doc.#58042 in case you need it; flashing ? mark.

  • New iMac 27 startup problems

    Hello Support,
    I've recently bought a iMac 27, some months ago, and all of a sudden it takes - hold onto your breath, more than 1 hour to start up.
    I've been using disk utility and done whats to be done. It still takes forever.
    It's got this grey screen with this spinning wheel on it when it's starting up.
    What can be done. I've been looking for S.M.A.R.T in the info panel in disk utility, but I cannot find this S.M.A.R.T
    I'm wondering if it's a hard disc failure.

    Hello Paul_31,
    I followed your suggestion and contacted AppleCare.
    It took approx. 15. minutes and I was guided through what to do. I restarted my Mac and it works just fine again. I have to credit Apple for some first class support. After I contacted Apple on the net, and till my phone rang took about 15 seconds. I kid you not!!
    And I want to give you some credit as well. You were right:
    "but have you checked the hard disk using the Recovery HD? Restart holding down Command + r and select Disk Utility and click on Macintosh HD and the 'repair disk".
    That's what AppleCare suggested and guided me through. I was told that my harddisc seemed ok as I didn't get a S.M.A.R.T negative feedback.
    I've been checking about this Mac and I can see that I've been reversed to Version 10.8.3 however.
    Maybe there's an issue with Version 10.8.4 slowing down your Mac.
    Now it takes about 10 seconds to startup. Before it took 1 hour and 8 minutes!! I hope Apple will look into the Version 10.8.4 if there's an issue about slowing down the Mac.
    However hanx again for your help.

  • Startup problems--time for a new machine?

    I have an imac G5 that I bought last February. In the last few weeks I've been experiencing serious startup problems. When turned on, the screen goes gray and the lines and pixels fragment and shimmer. It takes a long time to go to the main screen and often the screen isn't stable and freezes. It takes me eight to ten startups to get the system stable.
    I've repaired disk permissions, repaired h-drive, reset Pram. Still a mess. My husband wants me to just get a new one and get something that is not an Apple this time. I'm resisting that.
    I don't want to lose all my data and I've backed up what I can but I'm worried the data is corrupted and if I load it on to a new machine, I will experience the same problems.
    Any advice? I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. I'm out of warranty so I am on my own, but I'm frustrated to be having these problems with such a new machine.
    Thanks for any advice,

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    Connecting your MacBook Pro and your MacBook Air will be the fastest way, but you have to spend money on cables and adapters (also, your MacBook Pro doesn't support Thunderbolt).
    As you have a Time Capsule, one thing you can do is to start your MacBook Pro and make a Time Machine backup. Then, turn on your MacBook Air and set it up. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so select the option to restore the backup from the Time Capsule and be patient. This can take a lot of time if you have to migrate a lot of files

  • Startup problem on my G4

    hi to all!
    Something that happened a couple of times (so far) with my Gigabit Ethernet: I switch the Power Mac on, then when I come back a few minutes later the monitor is on (well, it’s always on...), but the led is on orange, as when the Mac is off, and the Pro Mouse (attached to the keyboard) seems dead, as there’s no red light coming from it... however the Mac is indeed on, same noise (fan) as usual, and if I open the case everything seems ok and the internal red led is on. Then, both times, by pushing the restart button the G4 quickly loaded Tiger. First time everything seemed all right, but today the monitor changed its brightness all by itself a few times... and I’ve realized I had this sort of problem in the previous days too, but much less often and I hadn’t paid much attention to it.
    I’ve guessed all these could have been caused by faulty Ram modules, something I already experienced last September, and solved thanks to this forum (even if last time the problems were of a different kind), or there are other possible causes?!?
    Anyway, then I’ve run Rember, and the first time it was soon stuck while running Linear PRN, then I run it another time and... Rember went through all tests with no errors! Then one more test and again there was an error at the Linear PRN stage.
    When I got the error free test I had told Rember to close also the Finder, while during the other 2 tests the Finder was on... and I wonder if this matter or not.
    I guess all this confirm it’s a Ram problem, and tomorrow I’ll start checking what happens removing (or leaving) one module at a time... but I’m perplexed by the mixed results Rember gave me today: should I check every combination I’ll try more than once to be sure Rember results are ok or not?
    Thanks
    Stefano

    ok, last Saturday I first run a few more times Rember, and got mixed results, but at least on half there was an error at the Linear PRN stage (and contrary to the first 3 tests, there was no patter in running the test with or without the Finder on), then I uninstalled one of my two 512 MB modules, the one I got new and installed last year btw, and after this on Sunday and today I've run Rember several times with always error free tests... I guess I've already found the faulty module, and the startup problem should be solved (as it occured only twice before, and a couple of weeks apart, I can't be 100% sure)... the drawback is that I'm back to 896 MB Ram, but I should get a new (and hopefully working) 512 MB module in a few days.
    However, yesterday morning, soon after the startup of the Power Mac I noticed a few changes of brigthness of the screen... but I guess it should be a problem of the monitor, as in the last couple of days I also run several times CPUTest and always without any error in the tests

  • Intel SSD 530 startup problems on ThinkPad W520 - Bug in SSD or lack of BIOS support?

    The are problems with Intel SSD 530 and ThinkPad W520. Many people, including me, are complaining about startup problems ... see this thread also: https://communities.intel.com/thread/44258
    One month ago I bought an Intel SSD 530 240GB to replace the stock HDD of my ThinkPad W520 (4270CTO). When I cold-start the laptop everything is fine, but when I restart it from Windows 7 or even CTRL-ALT-DEL, the drive is not found. Both SSD and W520 has the latest firmware/BIOS.
    I had no problems with Intel SSD 335 240GB; Windows starts and restart without problem, but with the Intel 530 it fails when I do restart, the BIOS does not find it after a normal reset. I think BIOS implementation for W520 does not support the newer ATA feature called "Device Initiated Power Management (DIPM) for Software Setting Preservation (SSP)". There is a BIOS update for W530 but not for W520.
    Should I assume Intel SSD 530 is and will remain incompatible with ThinkPad W520 or wait for a BIOS update?
    W520 | i7-2720QM | NV Quadro 2000M

    I am also seeing the exact same issue. I have a ThinkPad W520 and a Corsair Force GS using a Sandforce 2200 series controller. According to the Intel SSD thread, there is some incompatibility between that controller and Intel QM77-chips which is causing the issue.
    The symptoms for my laptop are the same. SSD is always recognized on cold boot, but effectively never on warm boot / restart. Will we get a BIOS update that fixes this?
    I have dual boot configuration with both windows 8 and windows 7. The issue is happening regardless of what OS I issue the restart from.

  • Startup Problems with my  iMac

    I am trying to troubleshoot a startup problem on my iMac and can't seem to get it to boot at all. The problem began last night when I tried to the whole HD to a previous time point in Time Machine. I only went back to earlier the same day to correct another issue that I inadvertently created. In an attempt to keep this short, I will stick to the facts.
    Last night I started the restore process by booting from the OSX dvd and then restoring the machine from a TM backup from earlier in the day. (external firewire drive) Everything seemed to be moving along fine with the estimated completion time several hours away, so I went to bed. This morning I woke up to find my machine will not start up. I get the normal chime and the white screen but then it is as if a gray curtain falls down the screen and soon after a dark gray square appears in the middle with the instructions to turn off the machine and re-start it, in several languages. This happens whether or not the OSX DVD is inserted and regardless of any keys (shift,c I've tried so far) that are held during startup. I am trying to startup from the original disc that came with the machine (OSX 10.5.6), but I get the same result if the disc is ejected and I try to startup from the HD. All peripherals have been removed.
    What am I missing? What is the trick to getting the machine to boot from the DVD?

    Success! Not sure what happened, but this time I started up from the 10.6 dvd (SL) (instead of the 10.5 that the machine shipped with) and did the restore from Time Machine (same as previous attempts). This time it seemed to work and when I restarted the iMac, it came up like normal.
    Thanks for the link Carolyn. I did do disk utility a couple of times and it consistently came back OK. It's now going through a very long TM backup, I guess it must be a new one even though all the previous ones are still there in the TM viewer.

    Sorry, possibly you need a new hard drive or try reformating. First
    you can try something like http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/  it has been known to repair disk that DiskUtility could not. YMMV and they don't give it away.
    If Disk Warrior can not repair then you need to Reformate the drive. Make sure you have a back-up in place no matter what.

    Disk Utility will tell you something about it's SMART status:

    I have a new email address. Changed this on my itunes account. On iPhone deleted old icloud account and created new with new email. I have set find my phone to on. When I download music from itunes it no longer goes to icloud an does not show up on my iphone.

    I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
    The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
    The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
    Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

  • Startup Problem & "Zapping the Pram"

    Okay, I'm having startup problems, and I did the Command/Option/P/R startup.
    Next, I know that Command S, or Option S, something like that should take me to a startup equivilant of Disk Utility. It's been so long, I forgot what to do. I searched but cannot find the answer.
    Hopefully someone here can help.

  • Problem with finding a File

    Hi:
    I am having problem with finding a file on the OS
    (using Win2000) when given an absolute pathname;
    here is the rough code:
    //theFile is specified at command line
    File f = new File(theFile);
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(f));When I run the program, I type
    java myProgram C:\aFolder\theFile
    But it can't find theFile. I am not sure what's wrong.
    Thanx

    No that can't be it; he takes the filename from the command line, so escaping isn't an issue (unless he used a shell that unescaped '\\' for him, but I think he's using the win2000 cmd shell).
    Dunno, I have no idea of your filesystem or shell. Just do some debugging, around the lines of:
    File f = new File(theFile);
    if (f.exists()) {
      System.err.println(theFile + " exists.");
    } else {
      System.err.println(theFile + " doesn't exist.");
    }
