New iMac Rocks! Yeah. But, iPhoto library won't transfer from my old mac...

I have my old system fire-wired to my new iMac and tried to move the file "iPhoto Library" in my Pictures folder to my new Pictures folder on new system. When trying to replace the empty library with my iPhoto library, I get the error message: "you do not have sufficient privileges." I am the owner of both systems and am entering correct username/password.
I found another thread on this forum and a recommendation to download and use BatChmod 1.37 to address the privileges issue, but that has not worked either. Help. I have over 1500 photos that I cannot access any more!

Sorry I missed that in your first post.
I can copy some of these files over to my new system, but am having problems with events/photos not showing up properly in iPhoto.
That's because you're tampering with the iPhoto Library via the Finder, one of the ways to trash your library. *It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss*
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

  • I have a new iMac - how do file share my music and photos from my old mac to my new mac?

I want to transfer my music and photos from one Mac to another - but I don't want to transfer anything else - what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from /users//music on the source to /users//music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
do the same with your iPhoto library. see this support article for more information (except, you won't have to option-launch iPhoto)

iWeb stores the data in a Domain.sites2 file whose default location is shown here...

  • Email transfer from an old mac to a new mac

I have an old G5 and I am getting a new G5 with the intel based chip, but I am not sure if I can transfer my emails from Mail to the new computers Mail. If someone could give me step by step instructions on how to transfer my emails from my old mac to my new mac that would be awesome. Thank you.

You can use the Migration Assistant to transfer everything from your old Mac to the new - login account and associated Home folder/directory and all data stored within including all Mail.app data, user and network settings and 3rd party applications.

  • Got new iMac, can't import iPhoto library from portable HDD

    Hi all,
I just bought a refurbished mid 2012 iMac.  I had kept my iPhoto library on a portable HDD.  When I tried to import the pictures I was first told the files needed to be updated for the new version of iPhoto.  It read it would take a few hours so I let it work overnight.  The next morning, none of the pictures were imported.  In iPhoto there looked like there were event boxes but no images in them.  Now the iPhoto file in my HDD is greyed out so it won't recognize it anymore.
Any ideas what to do.  Got 11 years worth of pictures on there and I don't want to have to pull out all those CDs and do the red eye correction and rotating.
    Mike

There's no importing involved in upgrading.
What format is the external disk?

  • What is the name of the Bookmarks file? I just bought a new computer and can't find the file to transfer from the old computer. I'm going from Windows XP to Windows 7

I was running Firefox 4.1 on a 32 Bit Windows XP Computer. I just bought a 64 Bit Windows 7 computer and reinstalled Firefox. I backed up all of my XP programs and data to an external drive but I can't find a file for my previous Firefox Bookmarks. What is the filename and possible folder where I can find my old bookmarks and how do I import them into my new version?

Bookmarks and history are stored together in your profile folder in a database file named places.sqlite. These articles should help with restoring as much or as little of your other profile as you like:

The following article has suggestions for recovering bookmarks: [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost%20Bookmarks Lost Bookmarks | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help].

i have a brand new macbook pro that i was doing a data transfer via firewire from an old macbook, it got stopped/cable pulled out, now have spinning wheel of death that wont stop, how do i reboot/stop the wheel of death and start again? (this time il use time machine transfer)

Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.

  • Some iPhoto files won't transfer from external drive to the hard drive.

I had all of my photos on an external drive and I wanted to put them on the hard drive of my iMac.
While copying all of the photos over, some of the files copied as 0 bytes into the "Data," "Originals," and "Modified" folders, but not the same files. So, some images have no thumbnail image in iPhoto (guessing from "Data"), some have no original image, but have a modified image, and some have no image at all (the 0 byte files that are only in "Originals."
The images are all fine on the external drive still.
Any idea of what I can do? Any file I can zap from the library or something to make this work?
    Thanks for your help.

Open the library on the EHD with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
and look in the Masters folder to see if any of the original files have zero bytes? Do not make any other changes/alterations, i.e. look but don't touch.  If you do find zero byte image files  then it's not the copy process that is the culprit but the files are bad to start with.

  • I just got a data transfer from an old mac to my new one and i do not know how to find my files

how do i find my files? its supposed to be under a new account but the apple store made these accounts and i cant log into them bc they have a password

Drag that account's home folder to your current account's desktop and provide an administrator password. If you don't know any administrator passwords on that system, ask the Apple Store.

  • My CS products don't work after migrating them from an old mac to a new mac. Any ideas?

Help! I bought a new imac, and used the migration process to move everything from the old mac to the new mac. But now none of my CS products (eg Indesign) will work. I use CS5.5 and CS6. The CS6 says I can run "a trial version" - which is absurd, given that I have a legitimately bought version on disk (that cost over £1000!). The CS5.5. icon just bounces for a couple of times then closes before fully opening.
Adobe will not help, because they say CS6 is "an old product".
I am desperate - does anyone have any ideas?

Migration does not work with Adobe products. There are too many components in too many places, and they don't get copied properly.
You'll need to use the Adobe Cleaner Tool to remove what you copied:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
Then download a fresh copy of CS6:

The iPhoto Library Upgrader tool doesn't work. I've downloaded it, and follow the directions, but iPhoto still won't open.

    Your Library is damaged.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for goign back: do you have an undamaged library?

My iPhoto library has suddenly disappeared from my computer.
When i click on iPhoto it tells me to choose my library or create a new one. However no library option appears. I have searched the computer for the library but it does not seem to exist anymore. I did not have time machine set up, so there is no back up. Is there any way i can retrieve my library?
Here is a picture of what appears when i click on iPhoto:

In terms of searching i have searched for photos on my finder. However, none of the photos that appear are from my iPhoto Library.
Search with FindAnyFile. You can download it here:   http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
Search for any file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the name. If you added at least one image to your library, the library should contain a file with this name, see OldToad's post: Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • IMac, just had repaired new Harddrive erase deverything, wheres my iPhoto n all those apps, i know the gone from hard drive but i thought they would transfer from my phone

iMac, just had repaired new Harddrive erase deverything, wheres my iPhoto n all those apps, i know the gone from hard drive but i thought they would transfer from my phone? HELP ?

Those Apps would not transfer from your iPhone because the iPhone apps are iOS 5 based and the iMac apps are OSX based.  They are not the same Apps.  You will need to transfer the OSX based apps over from your external hardware backup you have kept up, Or you can reinstall the OSX based apps from their original DVD's.
    Hope this helps

  • ***iPhoto Library won't load? HELP!

I had a problem with my external lacie drive.
disk warrior rebuilt the directory and the drive is fine.
Now however iPhoto will not load. At first it said I needed to upgrade the thumbnails and I did so but never knew if it was working?
I think the directory data file for iPhoto is messed up?
I really need to get my albums back up becuase that is how I sort my best
    photos etc..
I have had lots of iphoto crashes and I'm in the process of getting a more stable program. I have about 20,000 pictures in there. And everytime this happens it's always a disaster.
As of now I have imported some new photos into iphoto to continue my work flow. So, now iPhoto thinks this is the Library. I don't know what it's doing now, is it putting these new pictures in the same iPhoto library that won't load now?
I tried to load the "modified" iphoto library folder since I am hoping this will bring up all my best photo's I would have edited and go from there. But it won't load from iphoto. So I'm copying the modified folder to another drive and will try that.
Any advice on how to fix this mess?
    Much appreciated!
