New OS install - what to do with Lenovo HDD partitions?

So i bought G555 500GB HDD version and when i was trying to install new OS i noticed something weird. HDD was already partitione into 4 parts, first was Some system part 29,3 GB, then some primary part or something 29,3 GB, then HDD 400GB and then some LEnovo part very small something about OEM.
So apart from that its only 460GB not 500GB i wanted to know if i can Format those first sections without worries so that i can install my OS there or maybe if i wanted to merge them and partition differently?

Create a recovery disk set first using OneKey Recovery. Then you can do anything to your disk.

  • The guide to bootcamp assistant states that bootcamp can only be installed on a drive with a single partition. New Macs with Lion preinstalled have two partitions - the second is a recovery partition.  How do I install Bootcamp?

Late in August 2011 I took delivery of a new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled.  I need to run Windows as well. Following Apple's written suggestion, I printed off the then current 12 pages of the document "Bootcamp Installation & Setup Guide" which clearly stated that the hard drive you were going to install on had to have on it, before install, a maximum of one partition.  Using finder and disk utility I determined that there was only one partition.  Unbeknownst to me, there was (is) an additional hidden (from those two pieces of software) partition on the disk.  As of machines delivered new with Lion preinstalled, Apple has begun to include a "recovery partition".  In that partition there is a copy of the software necessary to reinstall Lion via a download from the Apple App Store.  Not knowing the partition was there, I cranked up  "Bootcamp Assistant" which nicely offered to repartition my hard drive creating a "Bootcamp Partition" in addition to the existing.  I told it how big to make each and hit the do it button, subsequently destroying my operating system.  Oh, it very nicely told me, after the damage was done, how many partitions were REALLY on the disk and that I could not install Bootcamp cause there were too many partitions.
Luckily the the Recovery Partition, which at that point I knew existed, was not harmed and after doing some research on another compter, I used it to once again download Lion from the App Store and reinstall. So, I have recovered but am still stuck with the problem:  how do I install Bootcamp in this new environment?

First you need to seriously back up your Mac.
A clone is an exact duplicate of your existing Mac HDD. Merely copying and pasting a drive will not make a bootable backup. In case of problems you can boot from an Ext HDD clone and use the utilities to repair, reformat, or clone the Ext HDD back to the internal Mac HDD.  While Time machine back ups are easy you can not boot from it. The best thing to have for any kind of problem is a bootable clone backup on an external drive. Some even have two external backup drives in case one fails. There are two good apps for cloning named SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.
In dealing with the recovery partition a simple approach is to clone the Mac partition to an external disk then re-partition the Mac to a single partition (GUID partition table) . Then clone the external disk clone back to the Mac. You will now have only one Partition and Boot Camp assistant sould not object.
Some have recommended getting rid of the recovery partition while others have advised not to do this. If you have the Lion USB Thumb Drive you do not need a recovery partition so can discard it without concern. There is another way to get rid of the recovery partition if you decide to do it but first be sure to have a backup of your Mac ( I know I sound like a nagging mom but many dead computers have been saved by this simple precaution).
    Use Disk Utility.
    1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
    2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
    3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
    4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
    5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
    6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply.

  • What's append with LENOVO battery ?

    Hi, i use a 7,8 Ah on my T61p.
The battery as 86 % of nominal capability and 120 cycles.
A day after working, the battery won't charge : battery error and fast amber blinking.
I discharged it completely, same thing.
    After few days, i can charge it and now it seems to work;
My friend with the same material, have the same problem : good battery but a day, battery error and finished. Good for the garbage. Two battery in 18 months do the same thing !
All the batteries were in good conditions before this failure.
What's happened ? Lenovo batteries are expensive toys ?
    T61P 6460DVU - XP PRO - 3 Gb ram - 320 Gb Hd - 15,4" display
    W700 27584SU - SEVEN PRO - 4 Gb ram - 2x320 Gb hd raid 0 - 17" display

    Abouladfia,
If the protection circuit opens due to cell imbalance, a short, or other fault detected within the battery pack, the system will recognize the remaining charge level of the battery, but will neither charge nor discharge the battery further - it is electrically disconnected.
I have not seen a battery in this state, able to be recovered for use, so I'm perplexed when you say it worked again after letting it sit several days.
Many times, the batteries will not slowly degrade as one would expect, and will appear fine one day and have the protection circuit trigger the next.  I have personally experienced this on a tablet battery I have.
I'm not sure what part number you have - you might check the support site to see if your battery is covered by this extended service program.
Hopfully, you have one of these batteries.

  • My Firefox will not pull up, even after I uninstalled the old version and installed the new version. What is wrong with it? It only had this problem recently.

I am having problems getting Firfox to open. I have unistalled the 14. version and then installed the 15. version hoping that it would fix the problem. It didn't. I have even tried restarting the computer, which also did not solve the problem. I know it is not the computer, because all other applications open properly, except this one. I would like to know what is going on and the problem to be fixed please.

  • System Profiler Report Shows PowerPC apps installed - what to do with them?

I just purchased a new iMac and successfully installed brand new shrink wrapped software: Adobe CS3 Design Standard and Microsoft Office:mac 2008. Additionally, I ran Adobe Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate to ensure I had all of the latest updates - each ran successfully and all applications were successfully updated to the latest versions.
Following the software installation I ran System Profiler to audit all the applications that were installed and I noticed all applications installed with these packages were Universal with the exception of nine applications which are listed as PowerPC apps:
    * six apps installed with Adobe Illustrator and
    * three apps with Microsoft Office:mac 2008; MSML Server was loaded in two different locations?!
I am concerned that I may have problems if I happen to run any of these PowerPC apps on the Intel iMac or just the fact that they are even present on the computer and may cause problems.
Can someone offer advise if I should delete these PowerPC apps from my new Intel iMac or what I should do with them?

The Adobe items are all AppleScripts which have been compiled as applications. AppleScripts are not compiled as universal apps.
Microsoft Messenger is a universal app. It's possible the server apps are not given they are dated 2005.

  • Clean install - what to do with a messy /user/library

    Hello Community!
I'm planning to upgrade from Lion to Mavericks with a clean install. But I'm worried that the speed-advantages of an clean install will get lost by migrating my current user account/home folder. I migrated my main-user-account from  new Mac OS to new Mac OS for many years now and used/tried a lot of applications. I Think that my main-user-home-library is a mess now - e.g. when I create a new user  with my current Lion - System - this new user is already much faster than my good old main user.
So my question is: should I clean up my current main-user home-library before upgrading? There is the "risk" of deleting to much or not enough.
Or is it better to create a new user and just copy from the old user-library what I need (mail, firefox profile, addressbook....) Do I get with this procedure permission problems?
Any suggestions or opinion is very welcome
    Dietmar

I think you would be better off  doing a clean install, making a new user account, and then carefully moving selected items, not just moving your user account or Library folder over, "cleaned up" or not. It might take a little longer that way, but it's worth it. A clean install avoids a lot of problems.
I made a list of stuff to move over. Many items (at least the ones I use) are stored in iCloud anyway; they sync directly from the iCloud server, which takes care of Contacts, iCloud keychain, and Safari bookmarks.  For mail I just recreate the accounts I have by entering their passwords in Mail.app. Ditto for network settings. I "manually" transferred my iTunes music, ibooks books, my photo library, and my documents from Time Machine. Then reinstalled my apps from clean installers. Trying to "tidy up" my Library or User folder would just be a mess. I don't do clean installs that often, so it's worth the effort.

  • New Essbase install - fail at "Register with Shared services

    Hi all,
I'm configuring up a new LINUX ( Redhat ) server to run Essbase 11.1 and the installation fails at the point where, in the configtool (using this in GUI mode not command line ) it's registering the components with Shared Services. In the configtool logs file I see:
(Jul 20, 2010, 02:47:19 PM), com.hyperion.cis.config.CmsRegistrationUtil, ERROR, Failed to authenticate user = admin
    (Jul 20, 2010, 02:47:19 PM), com.hyperion.cis.config.wizard.RunAllTasksWizardAction, ERROR, Error:
    Error Code: -1
com.hyperion.css.common.configuration.CSSConfigurationException: 20:3008:Failed to connect to native directory. Error Code: 9
On a previous install, I had exactly the same problem, and this was resolved by increased the number of processes on the Oracle XE instance that the shared services was using. However we already tried that and its not the problem. All processes seem to start up OK and if I browse to http://server:28080/interop it gives me the EPM web page, but if I select "Launch Appliction" it opens another window with a error "An error was encountered while performing this operation".
I've tried reinstalling, dropping the HSS schema, stop starting all services and mixtures of all but to no avail.
    Can anyone advise.
    Thanks

Just for info, the we don't have any form of "admin" user that is used anywhere so we're not sure where this is coming from.

  • New Emails Invisibl What's up with that nonsense?

OK so, since upgrading to Mavericks I have the following, minor, but extremely annoying issue with Mail. With Mail open and inbox highlighted, I check for new mail. Any new mail arriving is not visible in my inbox until I deselect inbox (i.e. click on another folder, say sent messages) then reselect inbox. Now new mail is visible. What's the deal with that idiocy?
    Fixed in most recent upgrade?
    Cheers.

    My first reaction is, "Yuck!"
I participated not too long ago in this forum in a discussion about music on web pages. All people with any real experience were pretty much against it, unless there was some control that would allow someone to turn it off and on, with the default being set to "off." And, of course, I don't know how it would play with assistive technolology for blind persons (were I to add sounds to one of my web pages, my sister, who is blind, would kill me, I think).
You would need Ogg Vorbis audio in order for it to be playable in all browsers and I should mention that I had a real nightmare dealing with video on this website because I had not told Apache that Ogg is a supported MIME type. Firefox would not play the Ogg video until I edited the .htaccess file thusly:
    AddType audio/ogg .oga
    AddType video/ogg .ogv
    AddType application/ogg .ogg
I would imagine you would have to do that on any Apache server. Until you did this, your audio might be playable in some browsers and not playable in others, like Firefox.
But be careful to not totally distract people with your audio files. Audio on a website brought up in the workplace is usually a clue to others nearby that the person is not working for the company. The first thing that happens is that the page is immediately closed when audio starts coming out of the speakers.

  • Use PS 5 can't use on 3 newer pcs. What's equilivant with same layers & photo manipulations as 5.

I have photoshop 5. I took classes at a local collage over 10 years ago on how to use it, I learned so much. My classmates had a more generic version.  I had the more expensive, high end version compared to the class. I really don't want to lose the ability's I had in 5. The instructor was able to show me some great functions in the 5-pro version, which I use, but I don't remember which functions those were.  I just can't afford the expensive pro version and Window stopped supporting my PC long ago and I've had to save things to floppy's because that PC didn't have a CD/DVD slot.  I want to use faster PC, my duct tape and rubber bands just are not holding my unit together anymore. I moved away from great teacher and the course not offered near me now. I could upgrade to just XP if needed and purchase a used version but I'm concerned about purchasing something used. Could someone spell-out for a low tech lady ...what I could purchase that will have the 5-pro functions and what I would lose if I discontinue it for your recomdation?

If you are looking for a newer computer, I would stay away from Windows XP as Microsoft just abandoned that version. Find windows 7 if you can.
Frankly from what you wrote, any newer computer would run rings around the old system including majority of the laptops. Almost all computers now come with a DVD drive, rarely CD but it is possible. External DVD drives can be had for under $100 easy. All newer computer have usb ports so external drives are easy to find and are relatively cheap.
If you can afford $10 a month subscribing to the photography program will get you the latest version of photoshop and lightroom.
Your alternative (speaking perpetual licensing) would be photoshop elements. You would be lacking some of the features, but would work for now for all the basics.
A main difference for you anyway would be elements can be used on your system until you run into the same situation you are in now.
Whereas the subscription is done 30 days after last payment. But it can be reactivated at a later date and it is always the latest version. Therefore with the subscription as long as you pay it will never be obsolete.

  • New dvd drive-what to do with old cd drive? Leave it in?

I have a powermac g4 agp that has it's original cd drive installed. It works fine but it can't burn disks just read. I purchased a Pioneer dvr-115D dvd/cd writer drive so I can burn disks too. Can I leave the original drive in and add the dvd-dvdr to the machine? If so, how? It looks as though there is an extra bay under the cd drive.

    Hi-
In the Sawtooth, it appears easy from the outside, but the internal carrier for the lower bay is only 3.5", instead of the 5.25" needed for the optical drive.
Although a "do it yourself" carrier can be fashioned, after removing unnecessary sheet metal, a 5.25" drive in the lower bay also interferes with the heatsink of the CPU (and/or other components), unless you leave the side door open.
It's best to replace the original CD drive, and, if desired, put the old drive into a firewire housing.

  • New iphone, now what to do with the old one

I am sure I am not the only one that picked up the new iphone after having the first one. My kids love to watch disney shows that we bought through itunes on my phone. The goal was, to use my old iphone as an ipod and let them watch the shows on it. itunes will no longer let me change the media on that phone. Is there a way to have itunes recognize this old phone as just an ipod to synch? Its crazy to have a 400.00 paper weight now as it should still play video even though its not used as a phone. You should not have to have the phone activated to use the other features in it like the ipod touch has...

I saw an earlier post that said you could do this. To clarify how, make sure there is no sim card in the old iphone if you want to use it as an ipod. Not sure why AT&T put my new sim card from the new iphone in the old iphone? That was the problem. I just updated the old iphone with videos and it appears to work fine.

  • Am I able to install Windows 7 in Boot Camp with this HDD partition setup?

I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, and my Boot Camp partition was obliterated beyond recognition. Fortunately I have backups, but I'm having issues re-installing Windows 7. This is what my disk looks like:
Mac OSX - Current Lion partition
Untitled - Where Boot Camp / Windows 7 used to live...
    Shared - 1TB of shared data... Media/Documents/etc
This is the error I get when trying to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp Assistant...
From what I can tell, this means I won't be able to do it without wiping the Shared partition? Or is there a workaround I can use? I'd really hate to have to move all of it over to an external hard drive, since I don't have one with 750GB of free space handy...
And would this probably happen again once Mountain Lion comes out? I'll be getting that pretty much on launch, so should I hold off on messing around with this if I'll likely have to do it all again in a few weeks?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
    - Mark

Why don't you invest in a 1.5TB drive and case? And add to that a TimeMachine drive (and a small 40GB or even less "Emergency OS X" partition on it... a must - could even have clone of Lion and Lion Recovery on it, AND  TimeMachine partition.
If you don't have a backup, it almost always will "rain" on the parade.
If you try booting from Windows 7 DVD and aim it at the parittion, what happens? tried?
To use BCA yes it is one partition and one way only.
You could remove " - " the UNTITLED volume and then expand Mac OS volume to fill that area, or plan for and setup Lion Recovery space too.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
People have managed. Usually planning ahead up front for a setup like this.
CLONE OS X and ~ or install Lion on an external drive and create a Lion Recovery partition.
