New Server Advice for a Mac Beginner

Hi
Please be patient with a Mac beginner, I have long experience with M$ software, but a client has been gradually migrating their PCs to Macs and now the time has come for the Server to do so.
I have been handed an XServe G5 to build with OS X from scratch for the new network.
Essentially the server will be taking on very simple tasks.
1. Security for the Macs on the network
2. Email for the users - currently they use 3 domains but all users can use all of them for different sorts of contacts.
3. File services - divided into two primary areas.
4. Security groups to keep separate file stores accessible only to those allowed in each.
Coming from a Microsoft background, I find some of the terminology for setting this up a bit harder to understand than I expected and would appreciate a few pointers and being advised if there are any gotchas I should look out for.
I am currently building the server in my own lab where I only have PCs, other than the server. This would not be an issue, I suspect, except for the suggestion in the User Management Admin Guide that the process is ideally performed from another Mac wuth the Admin tools installed. Is this really necessary?
I am also finding some of the advice about sharepoints a little confusing. I know that this is based on Unix terminology, but the methods described in what I have read seem to assume far more background than I currently have in this OS - Perhaps I should have got some training in first, except that the time frame does not permit this.
So, if anyone can suggest step by step guides, pdfs or walkthroughs and any other tips I would be grateful.
Cheers
Neil

Generally, the server doesn't need to have a video card, and it's often located in a remote location such as a server room where it's not the most comfortable place for a human to work.
Consequently all of Apple's tools are designed to operate just as well over a network. However, there's no functional difference between running Server Admin and Workgroup Manager on the server itself vs. on a remote Mac.
>I am also finding some of the advice about sharepoints a little confusing
Is there something specific you're trying to do that you're having problems with? In general the file sharing is straightforwards - use Workgroup Manager to identify the directories you want to share, and choose which protocol(s) it should be shared via.

Hello stacksofamber and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
You should be able to find a Mac OSX driver for that printer. Did you check with the manufacturer/'s website?

I spilled some red wine on my keyboard and i cannot connect to the internet any more. it says on the internet icon: Wi-fi: no harware installes. so i guess i need to get a new wifi card for my mac air. do i have to buy this from a apple store? i live fare away from an apple store. Also, I do have a macbook with software system:
System Version:          Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). can I take out the wifi card from that mack and use that one for my mac air?

Consider yourself lucky that your MacBook is still working. Now, turn it off. Wine may have damaged other parts of your computer.
Then, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. It will be a very expensive repair, as it's not covered by warranty and the logic board has to be replaced. In some cases, it may be better to get a new MacBook.
If you can't take it to an Apple Store, contact with Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • Migrating to new server: advice! :)

    Hi!
My current GroupWise 2012 SP2 server is a SuSE 10 SP4 and I need to migrate to a new server!
I currently have 5% disk space left and have ordered additional drives, but while I'm going through the hassle and word is Windemere is not going to be supported on SuSE 10, I've decided to set-up and configure a new server.
This is my plan (this is my first migration) so any suggestions, advice, LOOKOUT FORs, would be welcome with open arms!
The current GroupWise server is a virtual machine on XenServer 6.1 with a NAS attached.
After I install the addition drives, here is my plan of attack:
    1. Start up a new SuSE 11 SP2 server.
Notes: The old GroupWise server had a 20 GB disk allocated: 502 MB for /boot and 17.4 GB for / and 2.0 swap
GroupWise files are mounted at /var/opt/novell/groupwise with a 750 GB allocation (it's 83 Linux native).
I think I will double that (40 GB allocation) for room to grow.
Question: What would you recommend LVM or NSS for the partition that will hold GroupWise?
(I will have about 2 TB to work with).
    2. Install GroupWise on the new server with the same po/domain name as 'old' server?
    3. Install eDirectory on the new server and bring it into a new tree.
    4. Perform a Gwava Reload migration.
    5. Shutdown eDirectory on 'old' server, backup and restore on new server, then shutdown old server, reboot new server after modifying server name & IP to match old server.
    6. Run DSRepair to insure new server is in sync.?
    Comments welcome! Stan

Maybe you can do the follow, if you have a small downtime.
1 .Stop GW, make a "chkconfig grpwise off", change IP of the server, reboot and configure the old IP as a secondary(with yast). Then you can start GW again(and "chkconfig grpwise on)".
    2. Install a new server with a new name and new IP in the tree.
    3. Install the GW-Agents on the new server and copy the config-files (*.poa,*.mta, web?, gwia?, /etc/opt/novell/...gwha.conf) from the old server, and "chkconfig grpwise off"
    4. In XEN you can expand the 750GB VOL and then the ext3 or you create a new VOL in XEN and mount it on the same place (/var/opt/novell/groupwise) BACKUP before expand !!
    5. If you have a new VOL make simply a rsync to the new VOL, online for the first time
    6. Online-Rsync(with delete-option) you can make ever day to see the consumed time, you can use also dbcopy, but this didnt delete old files
    7. On Day X you stop GW on old server, make a final rsync (or dbcopy, if you like)
    8. remove secondary IP from old server and configure this IP as a secondary to the new server.
    9. start GW (if you use gwmonitor its easy to configure it new with the install of GW)
    Similar "IP-mechanism" use a GW-Cluster.
In XEN you can make (or you have) a separate network to check this after the first rsync. Switch the server to this network, give the seconday IP and start GW and check the gw-logs and/or start GW with X-Window, if you have runlevel 5 or xming.
Because you have today > 750GB you should think about a second Postoffice, because the handling of big volumes(Backup, Snapshot,...)
That you can make after moving to the new server. Simply build a 2. GW-Server, create a second PO with C1 (or you wait to windermere ??) and move some user.
A Client with the old IP that moved on the new PO is automatically redirected.

  • Report Fails on New Server - Looking for CrystalXIRuntime.msi

Hi - I have been trying to migrate to a new webserver but cannot get one of my apps to run,   Our former developer - who I cannot find - used Crystal Runtime in a reporting app and I cannot seem to get the right version of the runtime installed on the new server.
Our existing server has been running for 3 years and this app has been on there for a while.    When I prepped the new server I installed Crystal 11 .Net Server software.    However, one of my apps still does not run.    I get the following error:
Could not load file or assembly 'CrystalDecisions.Web, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692fbea5521e1304' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
    Source Error:
    Line 34:<compilation debug="false" strict="false" explicit="true">
    Line 35: <assemblies>
    Line 36: <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Web, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>
    Line 37: <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.Shared, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>
    Line 38: <add assembly="CrystalDecisions.ReportSource, Version=10.2.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=692FBEA5521E1304"/>
Now - I have copied ALL of the files including all dlls. from Inetpub down, from the existing server to the new server.   I notice that in addition to Crystal 11 .Net Server, I have something called simply "Crystal Runtime" on the existing server.   When I click support information in Control Panel it says version 1.0.0  but when I click on "Repair",  it tries to find a source file called CrystalXIRuntime.msi.   I cannot find this anywhere.
Im thinking I need to install this or register some of the dlls on the new server.
I am desparate to get this going.  Can anyone help me with this dilema?

    Hello Michael,
please download and install the [CR XI server install|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006009122008E/crXI_server_install.zip] on your new server.
    This should fix the problem.
Anyway, I strongly recommend [to update to CR XI R2|http://resources.businessobjects.com/support/additional_downloads/service_packs/crxir2.asp] for free and to continue with this product release.
    Best regards

  • Which New Graphic Card For 2008 Mac Pro?

I'm going to buy Final Cut X, so I'll need a new graphic card for my 2008 MacPro. My current card is an ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I asked AppleCare and they sent me a link to a lot of compatible cards (copied below).
But it turns out that most of these cards need Windows - at least according to specs - and the rest don't have the (2) DVI-D connections I need - so which card should I buy?
    The card has to work with my 2 Acer P243W 24" screens at 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz.
    Here's Apple's list:
    •    NVIDIA
    o    GeForce 320M
    o    GeForce GT 330M
    o    GeForce 9400M
    o    GeForce 9600M GT
o    GeForce 8600M GT  Note: OpenCL compatible, but does not meet system requirements for Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor.
    o    GeForce GT 120
    o    GeForce GT 130
    o    GeForce GTX 285
    o    GeForce 8800 GT
    o    GeForce 8800 GS
    o    Quadro FX 4800
    o    Quadro FX5600
    •    ATI
    o    Radeon HD 4670
    o    Radeon HD 4850
    o    Radeon HD 4870
    o    Radeon HD 5670
    o    Radeon HD 5750
    o    Radeon HD 5770

Once you look at what is sold, limits the list. None of those listed require Windows though. What specs? I don't see any specs. And of course nothing listed are Windows, that would be strange. Why you pasted notebook and iMac graphic adapters... unless Apple is selling FCPX for Windows.
Forget the GT120 though some use it with FCPX and are okay with it, save a little though I think 5770 has more processing, bandwidth and of course 1GB DDR5.
support for 6870 PC card is looking like a possible option now, too.
It is more mainly just 5770 vs 5870. Or Quadro 4000.
Amazon has PNY Mac Pro edition $790 vs Apple's $1195 for same card
PNY Quadro 4000 2 GB DDR5 Mac Pro
When FCX came out we had a couple threads on same topic.
    Apple Graphics Cards
    OSX and Graphics Cards
    Radeon 6870 3DMark 30% gain on 5870
Flashed PC Radeon HD5870 Mac Pro 2008
Flashed PC Radeon HD5870 Mac Pro 2008 - dual DVI works
I include the above for same reason why when the 4870 came out, PC card was 1/2 price and $450 for 5870? really? when XFX and Saffire are under $199.
    Radeon 5870 vs 5770 GTX 285 4870

  • What's the best way to serve media for ATV2, Macs, etc?

I just purchased an Apple TV 2. I really like it and I'm not having any issues, etc. But here's my question. I've got an old iMac G4 (still running like a champ), a brand new iMac, my MacBook, my wife's MacBook, daughter's MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPod touch, etc that are all on my wired/wireless network at any given time. Each of these computers has some movies, music, photos that I want to be able to watch on Apple TV (and the Macs for that matter). I'm interested in some kind of server where I can put all of the movies, music, photos, etc from each computer in 1 place and that's where all of my media is served from. I would not only like to be able to play the media in Apple TV, but also access it via either iMac, or my iPhone, iPod touches, etc (although the last 2 are not as critical and not possible yet till Air Play comes out next month).
Does anyone have any suggestions of what kind of hardware I should purchase to do this? Basically, I want a jam-up iTunes server that serves everything to each device (sorry, should have worded it this way sooner! . Maybe a MacMini server would do it? Or possibly just a Mac Mini or would Time Capsule do something like this?
    Any input is much appreciated!!

i use an old G4 Mac Mini running 10.5 Leopard, and it's on 24/7
it runs in headless mode (ie no monitor) and i remotely administer it using remote desktop (or logmein if i'm out the house).
i have a 1TB WD Mybook hanging off it connected via Firewire and that stores all my itunes content.

  • New Office, new Storage requirments for a Mac Enviroment

SAme country? Can  you use the same ISP to help with site to site comms?
xTB over 100MB will take a while to backup...you maybe needing a disk based backup like Unitrends at each site.
Windows file sharing on that latnency with those file sizes will suck badly. WAN acceleration may help - Silverpeak or RiverBed for appliance based or Aryaka if the offices are near one of their POPS - not cheap when you take a three year view but with Aryaka the capex isnt as big.   How about Google Drive or MS's OneDrive if you need sharing?

We are opening a new office in a new city some 1400 Kms away with 20 mainly mac users creating and editing video and print materials. Our main office currently has 120 users (mainly pc with abotu 20 macs) and we run a vmare enviroment with three hosts and 1 equalogic san, plus older mac x server with 4 fibre chanel raid arrays attached to it.For the new location, i was planning on building a 2 vmware host cluster with an equalogic array with 76 tb Raw storage (36TB in raid 10) with a Fileserver(s) to host the data and a Domain controller to for Domain logins etc incase the bovpn link goes down. Estimated file size for shared storage was 8-16 Tbs. I will have a watchguard xtm 510 onsite with BOVPN setup to tie back into our main office which will be a watchguard m400. Both sites will have 100 Mbps internet connectivity. Same site, same...

I had an extra internal hard drive in my Mac Pro, a Seagate one, that suddenly stopped working and I needed to send it to a data recovery company, so...
    Now I'd like to
    - Install a new internal HD
    - Install a NAS with two/three disks. (Hitachi if possible, as I have read are the ones that last longer, more reliable than WD and by far more than Seagate).
But to do that I'd like to know how to find out the right type of disks for my computer.
I'd be very gratefull if anyone would tell me where to look it up.
    Thank you in advance

NAS is of course external and depends on how you access it. And then t he ideal for RAID5 for instance woudl be WD RED series, but those do not work inside Mac tower.
Look up "TLER"  regarding WD drives and RAID.
Apple does not endorse or anything, not in decades and when there were problems - G5 and early adoption of SATA and changing standards and features, it was users that did the troubleshooting.
So unles you are using Apple's PRO RAID card, which I don't think anyone would or should and which is limited to 2TB drives and only instance of a ceiling on supported drives (it is req'd for SAS though), use your own research.

  • New Desktop Manager for the Mac is Wonderful

I had played with the leaked version and liked what I saw. I just think this DTM is excellent. The bugs that were in the leaked version aren't there. Its fast, its nice, I can do backups and upgrade the software from the Mac and load apps. This is great.
I've noticed people having problems getting their software to work. I ran into this error but it was easily fixed. I had been running the leaked version of the software. I decided to uninstall Missing Sync for the Blackberry and then I uninstalled my new install of RIM's DTM. I restarted, re-installed and it works like a charm.
