New Time Capsule 2TB problem

Hello,
I decided to get a Time Capsule (newest tower version). I ran the back up wirelessly and successfully, as to say that it went through the the initial backup overnight and completed it uninterrupted. The next morning, I entered time machine and saw the backup like normal. I then decided to test it out and deleted a few PDF files from my "documents" folder, emptied trash and then ran another backup. When running new back up, it was "backing up" an additional 1.8 GB, (I was surprised it would have that much to back up.)
Upon on completion of second backup, I decided to go back in TM to the initial backup to attemp to restore the deleted PDFs. When going back to the old "documents" folder that was initially backed up, the folder didn't have the deleted files, reflecting the "current" state of the folder, not the state from the initial backup done hours earlier.. Then when I tried to switch to another folder, like "movies" the TM started getting slow and unresponsive! unable to show the files. This is the 2nd Time Capsule I have tried and had the same problem with both. I feel like there is something wrong with what I am doing, however I have used TM on on a wired hard drive in the past with no problems. Any help in pointing out something I'm doing wrong or steps to ensure the go are set up correctly is appreciated.
the firmware is up to date as is the Macbook Software. Using a mid 2014 MBP retina with Yosemite.
THanks!

tthanks Bob. That makes sense if I'm following you correctly. The wireless "backup" process, where TM says "preparing back up" then says something like "30.5 GB out of 200BG backed up" , then finally "back-up complete" took about 5-7 hrs wirelessly but then completely finished.
IF I'm understanding you right, it may take a few days after the "backup complete" message for the TC disk to be fully catalogued wirelessly before specific file details are ready to be utilized for normal TM operation?
am I getting this right?
THanks!!

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.
I did one post with all the pictures.

If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

  • I have a new mac book pro and and older MAC desktop.  Both are backing up to my time capsule but it is close to full (1TB).  If I purchase a new time capsule (2TB) can I bridge them or access both and back up to it still from both computers?

If you add another Time Capsule, you can have one or both Macs backup to that new device.
However, please note that it is not possible to have backups "carry over" seamlessly from one Time Capsule to another.
If you add a new Time Capsule, each Mac that is backing up to the new device will make a new complete backup and then backup incrementally after the master backup is completed.

  • Airport Time Capsule 2TB - Problem with Backups

    Hello everybody,
I´m from Germany but I hope you understand my english. I have got a problem with my new Airport Time Capsule 2TB. I want to use it as a data storage, where all my pictures and videos are accessible via WIFI.
Copying the datas was no problem but now I want to make a backup of all the datas. For this purpose i created a RAID 0 out of two 1TB external hard drives. I connected the bay with these two hard drives in it with the Time Capsules USB interface. The problem is that no drives were displayed in the airport-programm ... Also non of my other USB hard drives were found. Only the Time Capsule´s partition "data" got found...
In the time machine program I can´t see the Time Capsule, so I can´t do a backup on the normal way... Even the "hard drive - program" from OS X didn´t show the Time Capsule.
It looks like they don´t want to know anything about each other ...
So, how can I realize to do a backup of the datas saved on my Time Capsule?
Thank you for your answers and sorry if my english is bad in some cases.

    Ok.. can understand..
You have two problems.. maybe 3.
    1. Time Machine (TM) does not work on network drives which includes Time Capsule.. so you simply cannot backup your pictures from a TC to a backup location using TM. It only works on locally connected drives.. you can use an alternative software like Carbon Copy Cloner .. I did check superduper but in the past it was not able to backup network source drives. You will need to check if the situation has improved.
    2. The Time Capsule will not accept raid array disks.. it must be a standard hard disk on a USB drive that it has drivers for.. and that is far from every model out there. So not all plain single USB disk works.. almost no array disks work.
    3. Your iphoto library if that is what you mean by pictures should not be on a network drive.. apple says it is going to be corrupted.
YMMV.. it is dangerous and only a matter of time.. if the pictures and videos are raw from camera that is fine.. it is only the iphoto (or aperture) library that is at risk.

  • New Time Capsule 2Tb does not do FULL backup

I've been using a 500Gb USB drive and decided to upgrade to a Time Capsule 2Tb.
Installation goes without a problem. Everything the manual says should happen, happens. So far so good.
Starting Time Machine, I'm asked if I want to replace the previous Time Machine or use both. I select replace.
Using an ethernet cable to speed the process, Time Machine starts making the initial backup. This should be full.
However, after it finished - no apparent error messages, Time Machine just closed on its own - I decided to check that some of my most important files had been backed up. I have 3 VMs. Only 1 had been backed up!
I'm assuming there will be other files that haven't been backed up. But why isn't this a FULL backup??

It is all the information that was backed up in the first one. After it started backing up after the second time I deleted that .plist file, it only backed up 4MB...it seems to be doing that now.
Edit: an interesting error seen in the time machine widget is "Could not mount recovery partition"

  • I just bought a new "Time Capsule" 2TB.  Apple says it is "Server Grade".  What does this mean?

I just bought a new 2 TB "Time Capsule".  I read somewhere recently that Apple claims this unit has a "server grade" drive.  I am reading here that the Time Capsule appears to have many failures.
I am asking today if the failure rate amongst users here is about typical for a large external drive or....and is the drive contained in this unit just another 2TB drive made by anycompany?

The original TC came with a Seagate 500GB ES drive. that was the seagate server series and were a better drive.. i dare say other than the dead power supply many of those drives will still be working fine. It is mean time between failures that is the measure of server grade. Since that time MTBF numbers  quoted by drive manufacturers all exceed the value that was in 2008 deemed server quality.. so they will claim server grade. Although all the drives used today are pedestrian domestic cheap ones.
But do not think the drives don't die.. they do..And new bigger drives means more data lost in one hit than ever before. I have seen a spate of WD dead drives.. both black from Gen2 1TB and green lately.. one on the bench today is a Gen4 with 2TB WD20EARS that corrupted the data partition of the drive. Getting data back is expensive and time consuming.. to say nothing of uncertain, having spent all the money that the recovered files are of any use.
Be paranoid... like Bob!! Keep a backup and another backup of all the stuff that you deem important. Remember in the past you had your photo album on film strips and printed in books. Now they are electronic digital format.. and a wave of the emf wand and they all disappear.. !!

I am a first time user of the new airport extreme time capsule 2TB. I use a macbook pro and imac. I installed the router today and got on wirelessly. BUT I cannot get my 2 printers that were previously wireless to find the router signal. The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4.  Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly

  • Problem with new Time Capsule w/ 7.5 Firmware Slow Speeds on 802.11b/g

I purchased a new 1TB Time Capsule with v. 7.5 Firmware last week. This Time Capsule is replacing a first gen 500GB TC with Firmware v. 7.4.2. I have 2 Macbook Pros connecting to the new Time Capsule via 802.11n at 5Ghz and 2 iPhones and 1 first gen Mac Pro connecting to it via 802.11b/g at 2.4Ghz. The Macbook Pros connecting at 5Ghz move data fine. The connection is very fast. Speedtest.net average about 20Mbps down and 2Mbps up. The devices connecting on the 2.4Ghz radio are slow as molasses. They test at less than 30k down and 30k up. Beyond that they have trouble moving data around the LAN as well. There are no sources of major interference near the TC. In fact the TC is in the same location as the old unit which was also running at 2.4Ghz with no problems. I contacted Apple tech support and then went to a local Apple store for an exchange. They gave me another new TC but the problem persists with the new units as well. This evening I took the new Time Capsule into the basement and isolated from any kind of interference with no success. I plugged in the old TC and the 802.11g devices were back up to speed.
Has anyone had any similar issues with the new AE or Time Capsule? I'm sure it's not unheard of to get two defective units but it's not likely. So I am thinking there may be an issue with the new firmware. I tried to downgrade to 7.4.2 but the new units require 7.5. Any suggestions? All network settings are the same as they were with the previous Time Capsule. The only thing that's changed is that both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios are active.

    Hi there,
got some problems with Time Capsule and 7.5 Firmware as well. Since it is my first device, I have no experience with older firmwares or models though.
It is impossible to connect to the 5GHz network. Neither when I have 5GHz and 2.4Ghz in one network or when I set a separate network for the 5GHz.
I always get a timeout message, I also tried deactivating the guest network and I also tried without any password, just would not connect to the 5GHz. By the way, I am sitting 50cm away from the TC and of course, I do have a MacBook Pro that supports 802.11n standard, a brand new MacBook Pro 13.
So, any ideas? I'm going to call Apple on Monday, can't check if it's the notebook, cause I do not have a second device to test ist. My iPhone works fine (802.11g), the 2.4Ghz also works fine with rates around 130-145 usually when close to the TC.
I also noticed that my MacBook Pro won't connect to the 802.11n when compatibility with 802.11b/g is activated. Then it runs with 802.11g instead....
pretty annoying, thought this would work right away?!

  • My computer is macbook white with iOS 10. 6.8, will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and what does it mean administrate the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

my computer is macbook white with Mac OS X (10. 6.8), will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and work properly with Time Capsule on my computer to back up wirelessly?
And what does it mean "to administrate" because it was written in requirement of the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

You must use a Mac running Lion (10.7.5), Mountain Lion or Mavericks to be able to set up the Time Capsule and make any changes to the settings.
A recent version iPhone or iPad could also be used for this task.
From the Specifications on the Time Capsule:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3

    Yes, absolutely.

I recently purchased a brand new Airport Time Capsule 2TB. I already am using the previous generation time capsule to back up all my computers data. May I ask how can I complement the usage with my new time capsule?

By default your new Time Capsule will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN
Most likely your iMacs will be connected to the wireless network created by the Virgin Media router. However, both should see the Apple Network under the AirPort icon's drop-down menu as another wireless network that they can connect to. Is this not the case?

  • Time Capsule 2tb Upstream Problem

I have a Time Capsule 2TB and when it is connected  to my network in Bridge Mode it hoses my network as it is sending something upstream which casues my network to slow down as it clogs my pipeline.
I have also tried it as a main router from my cable modem a Motorola SB6121 and the same problem.
The upstream problem seems to appear about 30mins after being hooked up and also after a complete reset of my network.
I have reset the time capsule and believe I have all the right settings. Does anyone have any ideas? Do I just need to get rid of this unit?

If you want to use ethernet then you can turn off wireless.. yes.
Just fill me in .. does the cable modem have wireless.. I didn't think it was even a router.. sorry I have not come across that model except in these discussions where they certainly have given people trouble.. that is worth a look btw.. is the modem itself the issue?? ie the combo of the TC and the SB6121.
Did the issue start after a recent firmware update to the TC.. or always been there?
So if I am understanding when the TC unit is doing a Time Machoine backup it slows the internet and network down even in bridge mode?
TM backup can use all the bandwidth.. and the Mac will not give any priority to internet over local network. So yes, TM can cause severe network slowdown.. it is local though.. not internet as such that is the problem.
How many computers do you have connected to the TC and using wireless?? How many doing TM backup?
Remember wireless is a shared media.. it has a max speed of say 60mbps real world.. and however many clients connect all share the bandwidth. So even one computer on the network doing TM and worse 2 at the same time.. will quickly stop network functioning.
So test.. turn off TM in all the computers.. if that doesn't fix it then you need to go deeper into the problem and figure out what is the cause.

  • DHCP problem with new Time Capsule

Just bought a new time capsule, and cannot get it to work.
I previously have a Belkin router/wireless that works great with my cable modem.
I plugged in my new Time Capsule into my cable modem, and it does not seem to get an IP address from the cable modem. I have it configured to use DHCP as I did with my old Belkin.
I can get the TC to work in bridge mode with my old Belkin.
I've tried resetting the cable modem (both powering off and hitting the reset button).
I've updated the firmware on the TC.
I've tried just the TC and the cable modem, no difference.
I haven't tried to configure things manually, without DHCP since I'm not sure how to configure.
    Thoughts? Help?

I also have a belkin and a time capsule, ive managed to get it to work in bridge mode. All you have to do is go into airport utility and find your time capsule, then you click on 'manual setup' and from there click on the internet tab and then at the bottom there should be a dropdown box where you can select 'bridge mode'. Apply the changes, your time capsule will restart, and thats it. You might have to activate bridge mode on your belkin, that easy though.Just type in its IP address into your browser while your connected to it wirelessly to acces its settings (im sure you probably knew that!) and allong the side there will be a 'wireless bridge' button or similar, simply click on that and turn it on.
Its best to let your belkin handle dhcp and nat, i tried fruitlessly for weeks trying to let the time capsule handle this, but i was only bombarded with double nat errors and matching ip addresses ending up in a factory reset of both the TC and the Belkin!
    Hope this helped =]
